They always want leadership skills but when you apply them on the job, you’re told it’s not your job 🙄🤦♀️
Actually I said the “whenever my friends go out I am the girl with planning and google maps” and they loved it
I guess it depends how you phrase it. _"Yeah, I know every boozer in a radius of 15 km from the city centre, and I once got me and me peepz to 20 diff joints in one evening, an' we got soooo wasted, man!"_ is most likely not what the interviewer is fishing for.
But I don't see how volunteering for, and organising, a team event (whether it be an office party or just friends meeting up for drinks one Saturday evening) can't reflect leadership skills.
Just make something up they will never know. That is what I got from this.
Can you give me an example for this?
Like the problem isn’t that I don’t know how to word the story.. lol the problem is I don’t have a story in the first place.
so make one up. cmon does someone really have to tell you this explicitly? do you want the job or not.
But what if you get caught in a lie ?@@l.u.c.a.s.
@@Kanrie01I'm no encouraging to lie, but, how could you be caught in the lie, the interviews rely on trusting you as there is no way to know. How would the person in the video know if the story is real?
@pixeldvx they can go deeper into it and ask more questions. Eventually a flaw in your story or your body language will tell the truth and potentially loose the opportunity
What if you don't have a story like that.
Especially if it’s for a position that doesn’t involve leadership at all….
Make it up babe 💅
They have no way of checking if you phrase it well enough
Her story is about taking charge, whilst not being a leader. So if you have experience of a time you were the decision maker short term, like an emergency, or a busy shift at work when your manager was busy as well. Just make up a school project if you’re young enough.
@@TheOtherChosenOnes but u never has tht experience do we have to lie on it
@@waterdragon55 you might have it even if you don’t think you do.
But yeah lie if you want the job lol
Her advice is really.. “Did someone ask you to mention a time you showed leadership?… I’ve got a hack!.. Just give them an example of a time you showed leadership!” 😃
What if, personality-wise, you never want(ed) to be a leader, so you make up a story but more importantly don't want to encourage them to one day make you one?
You have to demonstrate the ability to be a leader, though. You don’t have to officially be in a leadership position to take charge of an issue or conflict and influence others to mobilize in your direction.
I have the same issue.
Then whatever job you applied for would not be for you. Jobs will only ask you this if they want someone with leadership skills. If you don’t have them/don’t want to develop them, then don’t apply for jobs that require it. This is how people get stuck with shit bosses who only want a paycheck
To all the skeptics... Did you ever take over a group project at school, took the initiative during volunteering, or even kept calm and took charge in any sort of emergency? Congrats, you showed leadership. Now make that story appropriate for a job interview. Stop over thinking.
what if you’ve never worked for some big company n were never asked to lead a “project”😐
then u make it up.
There's a lot of ways you could demonstrate leadership aside from leading a project. For example, I answered this question before when I was still entry-level and my manager loved it. My answer was something like I took the initiative to thoroughly learn a new software my old company was transitioning to use, and eventually led training sessions for my team and became the go-to person for questions. Leadership was shown through taking initiative and leading my team to successfully adapt to a new software. I think we all do leadership type stuff everyday but just don't notice it. You got this :)
Doesn’t have to be professional. You could talk about moments you took initiative in group projects
Also if you plan vacations with your extended family, coordinate a group of friends to celebrate a surprise birthday party, anything in which you've taken a guiding role.
It is not even relevant who came up with the idea, as long a you showed proactivity, or created or executed a plan.
I am still in high school and have stumbled across this channel… but i’m wishing I could have sooner, because i am in FFA and my fall competition (called Leadership Development Events) there were so many questions similar to this! They were so hard to answer. I will remember to come back to this channel soon when I apply for a job! Thanks Erin!
I think it can be as easy as "I assigned myself more work since the team needed me and I felt I could do it and the team and team lead were happy with my work" leading self kind of thing
This isn't a "leadership" story, but funny, nevertheless. So my sister (attending college & in her 20s) interviewed for a job & came home & told me & my mom that she was asked in the interview, "what kind of vOcation do you see youself in 5 yrs?" My sister described her "perfect" vAcation. She kinda wondered why the interviewer looked perplexed. My mom & i busted out laughing & explained the diff. One single letter really does matter!
I had this exact question asked at my job interview today-😭✨
Wow. Second part is well answered.
Your tips are so good to know Erin! Thank you❤
I know I have so many examples it’s just getting them out of the woodworks of my brain… mostimes I even write down the examples beforehand but nerves make my brain blank. Anyways the example you gave actually reminded me of a similar scenario
Reality - I don't work well under pressure
Then you could say you prefer the japanese working system, on which planning and testing before release are the norm. All scenarios are considered, flaws are identified, controls are set, so as to run the process in the smoothest way :)
How do we do tht without any experience though
Lie
Not everyone works well under pressure.
For health reasons infact, people shouldn't. Thats what good planning, realistic timelines, and good time management can help us avoid.
It really depends on how you define leadership. It can be making a decision while your boss/supervisor is around too. You’re not technically leading but you’re still making quick and approachable decisions.
It can also be promoting team spirit. You could be the one encouraging the team and making sure the project is going to completion, even if you have a manager.
the “i’m literally 25” is me 😭 every time at my job when someone hounds me i’m like pls be nice, i’m just a child (i’m 21)
You’re not a child. In some countries, you would have already been married and been a parent. You are old enough to fight in a war. I was already finished studying Nursing by 19 and had 2 years front line nursing experience by 21. Quit making excuses. Raise the bar and step up.
I think some people are misunderstanding the question. It is “describe a time where you Demonstrated leadership?” Doesn’t necessarily mean that you must have a management position or lead a project or something like that.
It can be true yet simple. For example I worked retail for 3 years and we would get short staffed to just 3 workers during the last 2-3 hours of the day. I would often be the only visible employee at the customer service desk and there’d be times when I’d have 2-3 customers to check out, 2 phone calls to answer and having to help a customer find something in the store. You can just describe how you handled situations like these, they seem small/insignificant but can be overwhelming and be stressful.
You can say you remained cool and collected, answered a phone call while checking out a customer, explained to the customer that you’re short-staffed and radioed for help from the coworkers who were in the back.
Simple and small example sure but it was still a situation that shows problem-solving, communication with coworkers/customers and multi-tasking, ALL qualities which Demonstrate leadership. 😊
Best of luck to all Job-hunters💞
I never took leadership in work with others closest was a volouteer eventwhere we set up alot of chairs in groups 15 front to back and 15 wide
We we instructed to do the in a U type shape. All went well to when we were turning the corner and the groups of chair at the front wereto close together and the back quite wide apart. So i came up with the idea of stagfering tge chairs the same way as a stadium or theater has
Others came to ask about what I was doing and I explained and showed them. Oddly I never thought of it as taking leadership to some people told me theyiked hiw I took leadership. I did say thank you of course. To be honest I just thouggt of it as here is a prkblem how can we fix it even when people asked me about what I was doing it was just 1-3 people at a time I still just really thought little if it
"Can't say, signed an NDA."
Or the best one I personally used . They laughed so hard I once led a army of ants to food 😅😅
I’ve been in this game a long time, more than 30 years and I’ve worked lots of jobs so I’ve had a lot of interview experience.
They always SAY they want leadership qualities but in reality, when you use them it’s seen as “challenging authority” or “insubordination.” What they REALLY want is another mindless cog in a wheel who doesn’t think for themselves or question anything. No boss wants an underling who could lead better than he does so if you show any sign of leadership, you’ll be smacked down hard.
Interviewers who give candidates false hope in leading them to believe they can grow and advance into leadership are disgusting and evil. They all know the only people who will end up being appointed as “leaders” are just the butt kissers who suck up to the boss or are the personal friends he’s hired. Don’t p on my leg and tell me it’s raining! Why can’t interviewers just be honest for a change?
yes, but it is what we need, all of us I mean? Somebody simply cannot or has no will to get into leadership-love stress time situations
Theres no way in hell im gonna have a page of dialogue ready and memorized for any question that arises
Then you’re probably not passing many interviews
I hate preparing for interviews. It makes it seem scripted. I like to flow off the head and have a genuine conversation. There has been a time that I can recall where I was just like the girl stuttering on questions I haven’t prepared for but most times I succeed just by going on in the way I like. When you have enough experience working, most questions are easy to answer.
🙏🏼
But in the video the girl really had a story, a good one. Many people doesn't have one, that's the one the video should be about.
I was freaking out by the black dot on my phone screen but it's on your wall 😂
How would you answer why to hire you?
I always say I believe I’m qualified and passionate for the job and with my experiences I can contribute a lot to the company.
lmao. me thinking i was prepared then you throw out this question. ahh!! thank goodness for your videos!
perfect STAR format
Somehow I feel this works for the few % that really make this kind of decision you know what I mean?.
Like there are really other whom don’t get the chance to make a point being a junior depends on the job but most job junior wise won’t have this opportunity.
Those decision sometimes even if you lead does not equal success.
Though I understand that must come out as confident while saying this things.
I cannot recall a time I've ever lead anything. I actively avoid any type of leadership rolls in all forms of relationships and interactions.
OK, so I really want a video on this, @AdviceWithErin. How in THE WORLD did you acquire all these super spot-on techniques for getting jobs when you are clearly young and also built your career as a freelancer?! I just don´t see how you could have been through enough interviews yourself and had enough jobs AND make a successful freelance career to have learned it all by experience. (Please take that respectfully, as intended.) It´s very impressive, because freelancing and working for bosses is so different in my experience (but I´m like, OLD)... SO curious how you got the wisdom of a 40 year career woman.
What about if you have more younger leadership advice? Like for example one time I could think of is when I'm a teenager. I did a huge project for girlscouts (silver award) and its a great leadership role and big responsibility, but I don't think someone would take something from when I was a teen.
had this for an essay. wrote about my dnd campaign
NGL someone if work asks me to step up I'ma be like " shiiit I gotta go, feed my cat"
What if…you don’t do well under pressure. Should you lie and say that you do anyway?
Like I know there’s a level of bs-ing and using certain buzzer words in interviews that’s expected.
But if you’re maybe bad under pressure or at being leader (and leadership isn’t actually needed for your job roll) is there a graceful way to answer?
imma say exactly that verbatim. Even tho I have never been allowed to lead anyone at work.
I love your content but that answer didn't give a concrete example. Saying you were asked to lead something and it was successful doesn't tell me what you did to lead it. As a hiring manager, that answer sounded like a politician skirting around the answer.
What do you answer when you did not have the chance to be put in such situation before?
So the idea is to simply have a story? What happens when I don’t have that?
Think about a school project, a discussion or even something during sports/a hobby. It doesn't need to be in a professional context
@@kimbrolyy the problem is that I’ve never done anything in my life 😥
Maybe you did something to help someone one time. Brought a meal to a sick person. Organised a social event for a friend, an act of kindness for a friend or stranger shows you doing something of your own initiative to help another. These small things also matter and service is a sign of a great leader.
Make one up like everyone else. Almost everyone lies on their resume and in their interview and them are shocked when they get caught not knowing how to use Word properly or export an excel spreadsheet after saying they had advanced skills using those pieces of software.
If you don't have any previous job experience, can you say that you often took leadership roles in your family? For example my parents often worked late so I took care of my siblings and they always came to me for advice and with problems/questions
Or is that like unprofessional coz that's all I got
I THINK IM IN LUV YALL
"25 + leadership" OMG!!!!!
Question: how do I answer this if I have no previous job? AKA no story of work environment 😅 Thank you
And that, my friends, was my autistic childhood in a nutshell. 👏
Hmm I'd focus more on what you did specifically. What is it that you did that led to its success? I think from you answer it's not clear that the success of the project was because of something you did
What if it's your first job, what am I supposed to do? "I took charge of the school project?"
Yup, leadership regardless
What if you are seriously not a leader?! Like what if you’re to nice and people walk all over you I always make that clear so they don’t try and put me to manger
You can be a leader and be nice too
@@canadiancatgreen yes that is true but you can’t be a push over I am a pushover I struggle to say no when it needs to be a no therefore I cannot be a leader while I try to take on that role here and there I’m not authorize enough
I'm one person that fill the role of a leader (when I need to be) and people always say I'm too nice and cute - so I'll believe them. The thing about this is knowing *how* to talk. When someone would give me a not-so-great idea I would say "It's not a bad idea, but it might not work because of this, what about we do that?". Or if you don't have a second idea, then take a time to think with that person - sometimes people just want to be useful.
The thing about being a leader is that sometimes people won't even acknowledge that there *is* a leader. I'm super ok with it, it's even funny when I get to decide/organize almost everything and people don't even notice. In the end, it's not about bossing, but about making sure everyone cooperates. You can get it with training even if you're not a natural, I also had a lot of difficulty in saying "no".
@@semnome9574 huh..I’ll take that into consideration thanks
@@denim_devil-YT I hope this really helps you. Wish you success, and God bless you, friend
I will never understand corporate employment..
One time I inspired my coworker to quit his job, we both quit at about the same time.
I always just tell them I was in Girl Scouts tell college
What if my team lead hasn’t gotten in a car crash?
How do you try to reschedule an interview? Like if its really soon like day of and you get sick. It's always seemed intimidating and risky lol
This happened to me this week, I called up and sent an email letting them know that I unfortunately couldn't attend due to sickness and asked for their help in rescheduling, I've now got the interview coming up in a couple days instead :)
Sometimes the straight forward approach is best.
How do recruiters know that the stories told are really and not made up?
People without stories: it's ok if you're still green and you dont have any workplace stories! You can fall back on those godawful group projects from school or talk about how you coordinated a fanily reunion. Just get creative :)
I had to refer to a group project in one of my first jobs to explain how i wrangled 4 useless people (one of them actually dropped out of uni that same semester and didnt tell anyone...) and since this was for an HR position, i was asked followup questions about personal details which i refused to answer because it wasn't relevant and i aint a snitch. It turns out they were testing me to see how i would handle confidential details. I got the job :) and was later let go because of budget cuts
I once led the Israelites out of Egypt . .. boss I think we’re done : I’m on to toxic behavior
😂
yes but what if none of your jobs required that from you… what then?
People still ask this question from 2015?
Okay all I would have to say here is that I am the oldest of 8.ANYBODY who has *met* a child will understand.
So I have to be honest: answers like this sounds so incredibly fake to me that I would definitely not hire that person if I was in the hiring position. But I've also literally never worked in the corporate world so… Is this just the tone of voice they use? Is this how it works?
STar
Able to "work well under pressure". That's bs. If there's pressure, then there's something wrong somewhere, and if an employee believes that thriving under ulzer-inducing conditions is something to be proud of and aspire to, then there's even more something wrong somewhere.
I don't think you have to give a whole background story to the team lead having an accident.
Why not just say, the plan wasn't able to be put into action due to an unforeseen issue, then describe how you stepped up.
I haven't got time to hear your dribble.
everyone saying "but i dont have a story like that" lie 😂
Bro what
Jussttt..... lie. Apparently.
Aren’t u supposed to give hacks to people who haven’t demonstrated leadership and wouldn’t have a story to share like u did?
All good except for the part you sound exactly like if you were reading. Spontaneity means the world to be a leader so for a GOOD job you’d be instantly discarded if you sound like this
Interviews are basically you just lying and schmoozing your way into a job.
lol If you're a leader, being 25 has no damn significance because you've been leading since kindergarden. lol It's just who you are, everyday, and you can follow when needed & it's not big deal, but your natural state of being is leading, and it's just how people see you, even your earliest teachers.
Her voice alone is nails on a chalkboard 😬
I love her voice
Are people seriously this lost that they need to watch some random girl to answer this question.
If you can answer “tell me about leadership” you are not a leader at all
Sounding like a robot and telling her the definition before answering is a poor move.
Answer concisely, and add personailty.
Please dont sound this rehearsed
So lie?
I don’t have a leadership story…never been one😂 what can I say? 😅
Can talk about a moment you took initiative in a group project in school or even a decision you made in your own life that helped others
