Old Tupi or classical Tupi is an extinct Tupian language which was spoken by the aboriginal Tupi people of Brazil, mostly those who inhabited coastal regions in South and Southeast Brazil. It belongs to the Tupi-Guarani language family. Today, only one modern descendant is living with an appreciable number of speakers, Nheengatu. Native speakers called it variously ñeengatú "the good language", ñeendyba "common language", abáñeenga "human language", in Old Tupi, or, in Portuguese, língua geral "general language", língua geral amazônica "Amazonian general language", & língua brasílica "Brazilian language".
If you are interested to see your native language/dialect be featured here.
Submit your recordings to otipeps24@gmail.com.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hello! How are the descendant languages of Old Tupi doing? Is there any official government support for them? Are the communities dedicated to preserving them?
@@rvat2003 from old tupi there are the Guajajara language, nhe'engatu and a few dialects. Unfortunately the government isn't interested in preserving our native languages, however there's class of old tupi at University of São Paulo.
@@rvat2003 Yes, many people thought that the Tupinambás, the most contacted by the Portuguese colonizers, no longer existed, but they are spread across all territories. There are projects by the Tupinambás of Olivença, in the state of Bahia, with indigenous education and the teaching of the Tupi language. Thus, like the Potiguaras of the states of Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba, and the Tupinikins of the state Espírito Santo. With the Potiguaras of Paraíba, there is a project of the state government and the village and with the partnership of Professor Eduardo de Almeida Navarro, the greatest tupinologist today. Professor at the University of São Paulo. But currently the Brazilian government, as far as I know, does not help these communities in the resumption of the language and being able to withdraw this status as an extinct language.
That is, until today, the language is considered extinct only officially. When there is an official Census of the Tupi peoples, it may be that in a few years there will be de facto native speakers.
My dream is one day everyone speak Tupi fluently here in Brazil❤️🥰
00:14 those paintings were made in the 17th century by Albert Eckhout, a Dutch painter in Dutch Brazil(northeast Brazil). In the 17th century Tupi was even spoken in Amsterdam by some Potiguara amerindians that visited Amsterdam. You even had some Dutch colonists that learned the language in Brazil.
PINDORAMA! The beautiful original name of Brasil (but Brasil is also a pretty name). Both refer to trees: pindorama - land of palm trees; brasil - the brasil wood. Cheers!
You can really hear the influence of the Tupi pronunciation on Brazilian Português as well as so many towns and cities that have Tupi names!
Gives the language a real culturally distinctive sound and vibe.
It sounds very similar to guarani language. Both guarani and tupi peoples are very close geographically.
I am Brazilian and am studying this language
And my dna is 4% Tupian and 6% from the Amazon indigenous people.
Wow, congratulations buddy. Welcome to my channel, there I have upoload videos about our tupi language, in addition, there's also an interview in English about tupi.

Andy, this is absolutely fascinating, I love this content, please keep making more!!
The historical info is so interesting too!
Thank you for creating and sharing this content ❤🎉
I loved to see Tupi here, aûîebeté❤️👏🏽🥰
Pretty good. The language spoken here in brazil when the portuguese arrived here in 1500.
Somehow this language seems like it inspired the Na'vi language alot....
Actually, Frommer said many languages have inspired him in the Na'vi construction process, but I think he didn't mention the Old Tupi. I'm sure he used some sounds form Navajo, Quechua or Apache language, I guess (the plosive sounds, tx, kx and px).
A brazilian metal band which sings in this language is Arandu Arakuaa
They have wonderful songs! I love Îakare'ype
Ótimo vídeo e parabéns ao falante. Estou aprendendo tupi também.
Aûîebeté, xe iekotyasab-y-gûé. Muito obrigado, meu amigo. Sou eu quem está falando neste vídeo. Peço que visite o meu canal, pois lá estou postando vídeos no nosso amado idioma tupi antigo
When colonizers and natives have similarity in languages, nasal sound.
Tupi tem sons nasais para todas as vogais. É incrível
The brazilian portuguese is more nasal than european portuguese due the tupi influence. Words like muito sounds muinto, tãmbem and many others. There is a tribe, the Pataxós Hã Hã Hãe.
Beautiful language
Thank you very much. Please visit my channel because there you can learn more about our ancestral language. I even uploaded an interview in English.

Yes, our native language called Old Tupi is indeed very beautiful.
Such a beautiful language ❤️
Congratulations on your portuguese pronunciation, really sharp!
still an amazing channel
Great video Andy! It's lovely that you're sharing this beautiful but sadly extinct language.
It's not extinct; it lives on as Nheengatú (look it up) =)
@@RcsN505 When they say that Nheengatu is modern Tupi, I think it's a mistake, Nheengatu is just an offshoot of the Amazonian Tupinambá that has become a new language. Yes, it is in the historical process of the Tupi language, but it's not the Tupi language itself, it's just a descendant, just like Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese is for Latin.
There are articles that theorizes the idea that the ancient Tupi already coexisted with its descendants, at that time the so-called "general languages", one of these, the Amazonian, gave rise to the current Nheengatu.
Interesting language
Thank you. On my channel I uploaded an interview in English about our native language. Please, check it out.

Andy, are u brazilian? Amazing pronunciation!
She's Filipino
I loved the story
Thanks. On my channel I uploaded an interview in English about our native language.
Doesn't this language technically have a modern descendant: nhengantu? It means tupi is technically alive if that is the case
Nhe'engatu and Guajajara as well, the first language is very different from tupi, only the vocabulary seems to have the same origin, but the grammatical structure is very reduced, on the other hand, guajajara language is more consistent.
It is no extinct, and that's not from brazil. Search Paraguay. That's my home country the place where we speak guarani. tupi its just a way of the dialect. And beatiful video!
