The company got its name while Jason Stoddard (the founder) was still working on some prototype designs in his garage before the company started selling products. He told his wife that he was going out the garage to work on some sh-t. His wife said "you are always working on sh-t" so you should name your company "sh-it". So that this what he ended up doing, but of course he had to spell it differently. All products are designed and assembled in CA or TX. All of the products seem to be named after Norse mythology, which I guess Stoddard knows something about.

Took the dive into the Freya + recently. No regrets. Took 4 hours of burn in to open up. If you're on a budget and the + is out of reach, I think you will be thrilled with the Freya S if buffer mode with the + is any indication of sound quality. Both tube and buffer mode on the Freya + have a great soundstage with a lot of depth, with tube mode just a little bit more. I'm running the Freya + into two Vidars as mono-blocks. The speakers are a pair of old Infinity RSII's, an open back, with "sub woofer" design bottom end.

They have made me love digital which I used to not... they give you clarity and resolution as expected, but with a smooth, liquid quality that is so easy on the ears and MUSICAL. The names of their products could be considered Norwegian. The Freya: this is the goddess that chose who's soul deserved to be in Valhalla. She then sent the Valkyrie to collect the souls. Ygdrassil is the world tree, which unites the 9 realms ( Asgard, Jotunheim,Midgard, Nifllheim, Muspelheim, Vanageim, etc... ). The Bifrost is the Rainbow Bridge. Modi is the god of courage, one of Thor's sons. Magni is the god of strength, another of Thor's sons. When he was two, he saw a giant standing on Thor's neck he threw the giant off of his father. Gungnir is Odins spear. Asgard is where the Aesir dwell. Mjolnir is Thor's hammer. On and on...

Hi Derek, I took the advice of Thomas & Stereo and bought a pair of the Polk Audio 703 LSIM. These are now under $600 as compared to their original price of $1,400 when first introduced 5 years ago. These are full range 3-way speakers, good open higher end and very solid bass. Had a 20 year old Yamaha A-500 integrated amp before. I thought these speakers sounded OK with that, but 100% improvement with the Schiit setup. Amazing difference! Looking to buy the KEF R3 when I can save up more money.

  • @yuckysamson
    @yuckysamson 4 года назад +3

FWIW, I'd posit the appropriate A/B with this is one Aegir in stereo vs. the 2 in bridged mono as you've done. Historically many amplifiers do not sound better in bridged mono than in stereo (for various reasons), but some amplifiers really do sound better. Here the matter is complicated more than regular by the fact that in stereo the amp puts out 20 wpc, which is in no way "flea powered" but certainly scrapes the bottom acceptability factor for many listeners with lesser efficient loudspeakers. So I'm really curious to hear a comparison between those two set-ups, to get your thoughts on what you hear. Thanks Ron.

Well played, you had me fired up and ready to send a nastygram until you dropped the charade ~7:00.
For anyone interested, I put a Modi Multibit in the hi-fi a while back and, ESPECIALLY considering it was practically free (I think it was $250-300?), it is OUTSTANDING. Made my former, more expensive, DAC seem unrefined by comparison - and simply ran circles around the (underwhelming) DAC built into the NAD 3020 mkII.
In a complimentary way, it's the Honda Accord of DACs; not the best at any one thing, but fully competent and enjoyable at/for every single day-to-day task you throw at it - and it's bang for the buck factor is stratospheric.
If you don't already own something significantly better, this is a total no brainer at a couple/few hundred bucks. IMHO, of course

Jason Stoddard and Mike Moffat with John Darko ruclips.net/video/IUBFtqNpC7U/видео.html
    Jason Stoddard Memoirs www.head-fi.org/threads/schiit-happened-the-story-of-the-worlds-most-improbable-start-up.701900/
Yes, "Schiit" is pronounced "Shit" and the company is all about Schitty puns. Jason tells the story of the naming in his memoirs. Jason also writes about the technology that shaped the products along the way as he writes about the decision to return to consumer high end audio manufacturing, getting started in his garage (yes, literally), acquiring employees, moving into leased space, and product development decisions and challenges.
He talks about R-2R DACS vis Delta-Sigma DACS and why the R-2R DAC is preferred. It's the filters. R-2R reconstruction filtering is easier to realize as required filters are closed form. Delta-Sigma filters don't have a closed form solution so must be approximated. Some do it better than others. Jason also talks about the various amplifier classes and topologies, which topologies he uses, and why. Note that Aegir uses a novel topology Jason calls "continuity". Hopefully, he'll write it up for AES publication one of these days. Aegir and Vidar are not overly heavy at 22 pounds (10 KG). GAS Ampzilla (200/200 at 8, 400/400 at 4) weighs in at 60 pounds.
Jason's book is a good read for tech buffs and those considering a manufacturing start-up adventure. I highly recommend reading it before making your next videos. Also visit darko.audio and look at John's films and posts regarding Schiit Audio products.

I've got a pair of Vidars and the Freya. 90% of the liquid and transparent sound with 400 Watts @8ohms instead of 80 with 10 biased to class A. I am driving Maggie1.7is and enjoying impressive dynamics clarity and the most solid bass I have ever got out of the 1.7s. I have tried other amps,ParasoundA21, Emotiva XPA2, and an old Ampzilla. they come close but not quite with one caviot. throw out Schitts shit power cables. they work fine with 12g but the maybe 16 g crap that comes with them chokes them to death. Expect a month of running before they burn in and leave them powered up because they are cold blooded.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure I'm going to go that route. Would have never thought the power cables would have been an issue. Thanks for the tip

Ska-eet? No. It's pronounced Shit! Why? Because the name is a play on a old Norse word. The history behind their name is awesome. Jason was to busy building his company and when his wife wanted to do anything he would say. "I'm sorry honey but I got shit to do." Out of frustration she exclaimed "why don't you just call you company shit then!"
    And the rest is history.
I will watch full video tomorrow but so far you got a new sub out of me.

Are you sure the DAC is fully balanced? The site just lists balanced output as a new addition,. The balanced DAC is the next one up the line, the Gungnir...

I own 2 pieces of Schiit: gungnir multi bit dac and mjolnir tube amp and they really are that good. Tube rolling is another way to shape the sound depending on the genre of music and your mood. There's alot of nos tubes out there.

Currently have a Jotunheim with the AK4490 dac and a Hel. Both are pretty nice for what you pay. I went with the sigma-delta DACs since the multibit (R2R) DACs aren't measuring as well and are more expensive. I think you have to pay a LOT of money to get an excellent measuring R2R DAC (i.e. Holo Audio).

Ron, I am enjoying the new direction of your channel. To be completely honest I missed the Channel as it was in your episode about the .7s, I know it took a long time to put together; however, in the last week or two I am seeing that Ron come back + the new channel. This combination of the new and old style is taking you in a very sustainable direction, that will deliver the detail and suspense!!!!

New favourite audio channel - honest commentary presenting pros AND cons. Just curious, did you notice any noise issues with the Freya+ (beyond the tube noise)? I’ve had some grounding issues with it in my system...

Nice vid. I keep hearing nothing but good about Schiit. I think when cash flow allows me I will be getting some also. The Vidar looks good. The one thing I hear a lot of bitching about is their power switches being on back. Well I could care less. It still sounds good
