Mannnnnnn that double bass section!!!! LOL I have gone back a few times after recording this. This is so good!
For live content catch me on Twitch. www.twitch.tv/drumrolltony
Heel-Toe (back to front/front to back doubles), Swivel (side to side doubles) and normal single hits. And he can even combine them.
Where’s the gta 4 Soviet connection reaction 😊
So it seems it a new profile on lck that has transformed from heel toe to ball toe. Ball of your foot at the top and to the tip of the toe. To make the hit to the pedal shorter. I've been seeing it a lot more recently. It's like heel toe takes it slower by a quarter tempo. Shit is getting crazy in the streets. 😂
the technique he's using is called heel-toe, its basically a double stroke on the bass pedal where your heel is one stroke and as the pedal is coming back up you get a second stroke by using the balls of your feet. its a common technique used by a lot of metal drummers
The balls of your feet lmao
Ignore my comment I just found out it’s an actual name
4 thechniques heal up, heal down, swivel foot(the one you asked about) and heal toe not to mention he uses a hybrid of those in a few different ways
he actually is not using heel toe double (all the time) but a hybrid heel toe triple when he is going really fast it's insane to watch and only a handful of drummers have mastered the blast beats he does is the reason he holds his sticks backwards if you can find it search his name and slow-motion foot work I stumbled on it once but can't find it since because I don't know the actual title
That's more the kollias heel toe. Where the ankles swivle left to right. Well known because of George Kollias of Nile.
Now is time for Slaughter to prevail ❤
As much as I love the instrumental with the focus on the drums I'd highly suggest watching the video with vocals. Alex brings it to a completely different level even if you're someone who doesn't care about lyrics his voice as an instrument is incredible! Also it'll fill in some of the breaks towards the end of the song.
I have gotten a few comments saying to do that. I def have to for sure
@@DrumRollTonyReacts As much as I'd love to see a reaction of you doing it with the vocals, just you listening to some Slaughter songs with Alex on your own time would bring me joy. Because I know how much I love it. Have a wonderful weekend!
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Yes. Hear those drums in with the rest of the band, it's a great assault on your senses as a whole. Alex (the singer) is just as much a beast as Evgeny is on drums...
Drummer here. So, heel up is better for simpler/slower grooves, as it gives much more control and power. Theres also a 'slide' technique which is when you get a quick double stroke by sliding the foot up the kick pedal. The 'ankle rotation' you saw is called "swivel" technique, and it's used by some drummers for really fast double bass, a lot of the time short bursts. When he plays heel down, it's called "heel-toe" technique, and it allows him to play double strokes (first hit with heel, second with toe) and get very high speeds for extended time. Heel-toe and swivel loses a lot of power though, which is why people play with triggers. Hope that answers everything
First drummer I know of using the swivel technique was Tony Williams who used it on his Hi-Hat foot a lot.
Succinct and to the point, and i understood every word. Thanks Drummer, exactly how to short wind an explanation, as opposed to the long winded version that too many people favor.
lol you are not a drummer, you're dumber 🤣 at that speed you just can't NOT using the triggers. Analog too "soft" and can't give a clear sound. Absolutely no connection between power and triggers wtf are you talking about 🤣
@@benwoning945 Was about to comment the same great explanation of the techniques
Evgeny also does alternating triplet/sextuplet (I'm not sure on the count as I'm not a drummer) where he heal-toe's one foot an swivels the other.
Evgeny is a beast, I reckon you would get a kick out of his playthrough of Zavali Ebalo it's less ferocious but it has groove for days and some more of the awesome cymbal work and cool fill patterns. He's incredible to watch.
Throw in some David Diepold and you've got a trio :)
At 6:37 it’s called heel toe technique and this guy is a master of it. Pretty impressive
YESSSSSS! he did it! So happy you checked it out
Now you gotta listen to the whole song
Double strokes are heel down. Heels up he is floating. His gravity blast is out of bounds!!!!! Dude can shove some serious doubles !!!
Can we talk about when he switches to playing the hi hat that he switches his snare hand to his right hand.. but when playing cymbals he uses his left… unreal
Slaughter is usually hailed over Alex' vocals, but in my humble opinion, the absolute MVP is Evgeny.
He's not just a highly technical drummer, but he's the grooviest f**ker I've ever heard on any drum set.
The drum technique you weren't sure about is called, as I've heard from actual drummers (which I'm not ftr), a "swivel" foot technique.
The double bassdrum section is the heel-toe technique, executed to absolute perfection.
Have you seen his work with his previous band Katalepsy? He wrote super technical drum parts for their songs, moreso than for slaughter to prevail.
@@Rickyp0123 I have! I looked into Katalepsy after the 66Samus video on Evgeny
@@indus3270 Nice! That's the video that prompted me to look into them too
You can really tell how skilled he is because he plays flawlessly in his mask. I own one of their masks and they're impossible to see out of in the light.
This guy is a an absolute monster 🔥 Literally a master of heel-toe and swivel kicks 👌👌 Austin archey and this dude are my top 2 favorite drummers, both insanely good.
Don’t beat yourself up , you’re the best reaction I’ve seen of this so far !! 🤘🏼
You gotta check out the drum cam view of Meshuggah's "Bleed" - insane polyrhythms.
Now watch the full video all of it fits so well together
Love how you mentioned there's a difference between understanding what's being done vs. actually doing it
Signs of the Swarm has a gnarly drummer that makes what he's doing look super easy.
Got to play with blue thunder several times in HS! Yall came to Sumner high for our field show competition a few times, and damn was ot fun being on drum line to jam with yall!
welcome to the world of heavy metal man.. the skills are on another level.
Foot techniques he's using:
Standard toe down heel up
Heel -Toe:: Heel hits, then toe hits, two hits in a single motion per foot ( you need a long enough footboard on pedal)
Swivel Foot: foot swivels back and forth, for each swivel on the board you get a stroke, both feet doing it doubles it.
Scuffs: sliding feet along boards to get a short controlled burst of double strokes with stops/pauses.
Love your humility. It earned my subscription! Plus you're the only one I've ever heard mention my favorite part (after the rapid dbl bass)
the one hand roll on the rim is called a "Gravity blast". and Evgeny has very clean and powerful ones
Best metal drummer in my mind. I love how he isn’t afraid to play up top
I’ve noticed that ankle rotation on a lot of the people doing these crazy bass beats - great question
Dude, holy shit, I’m down into a rabbit hole to your channel. You are fantastic, bro
Thanks for the nice comment
His portnoy before the end break down is so sick and tight my dude
Dude you are awesome, keep this shit up
Big fan of STP here as well a growing fan of yours. Maybe it's just me, but every time I listen to one of their songs, all I can feel is a sort of out of body experience.
The sheer perfection all the musicians in this band are mastering have gobsmacking effect. Evgeny Novikov is already a superlative among his peers.
Maybe you should react to one/ any of their songs with vocals. Guaranteed your jaw will drop listening to Alex Terrible's vocals as well.
Can you believe he's spent years on the formal piano training, before changing gears...
If you ever check out more of this guy, he's got two videos of just raw sound and him playing tracks live. "I Killed A Man" and "Made In Russia" are the songs. 👍
Hey bro love your content. Waking up to a new video almost everyday is pretty awesome. That technique you were trying to figure out is called the swivel kick technique or the heel toe technique. Please keep up the amazing content dude. Can't wait to see what you react to next!
Bout time you did this. I’ve been asking, so I’m glad you reacted
"Archspire - Drone Corpse Aviator" is even faster! Their drumming Spencer Prewett is one of the fastest drummers in extreme Metal. His drumming is heavily displayed in the music video, so it's a must-watch! 🙂🤘
Bleed the Future is an insane song as well!
@@immortalset6 Agreed, I'd say the whole damn album is insanely impressive. Every single musician in the band takes their respective instruments to a whole new level. When I first heard Golden Mouth of Ruin, I was almost convinced that the tracks had to be somehow computer generated or otherwise heavily edited - turns out no, they're just completely out of their minds (and yes, I've listened to copious amounts of other tech death bands before discovering them). Absolute monsters of musicianship.
I dont think you have to be a drummer to understand that what he's doing is out of this world in so many ways
One of my favorite breakdowns
Highly recommend any or all of the new Lorna shore tracks. Cursed to die is a masterpiece. Austin archey is up there with the best metal drummers in the world in my book. The speed, technicality, and articulation he has is mind blowing.
(I came here to say this.)
@@handcoding 🤣 Glad you came here just for that!!! 🤣
@@palladinodessa8988 I’m not sure why you find it hilarious that I’m agreeing with the earlier comment, but if you find that funny, that’s great.
@@handcoding I thought you were being funny and pointing out that people come to (this) and don't even acknowledge (this) but rather promote (that) instead. I thought with the quotes you were pointing out this kinda classless commenting style. Sorry. Promote away. 👌
@@palladinodessa8988 Right on-it’s all good!
He was using a mix of heel-toe and swivel techniques with the double bass, anything faster than 16th notes I also will go heel-toe
You should see Evgeny's drum playthrough for Zildjian (song from his previous band, Katalepsy). Its more technique
I love it, drummers and producers From all genres are tuning in . It’s about time ! Evgeny changed the game by adding groove and creative fills while yet he has speed . Kollias blew my mind 10 years ago playing swivel foot at 280bpm but was all speed !
Коллиас из Nile, верно?
Bro this is like my 18th time watching this. I absolutely love your analyzation of the way he plays even though you don't exactly know the techniques he's using. Please do more of his drum playthroughs.
I just recorded another one of him since you left me this nice comment. Thanks for getting me back to him.
12:47 You can see that he was holding the sticks at the thin end, you supposed to play with. He just hits harder!
Evgeney's blast beats are freaking surgically precise. Dude is such a fucking monster!!!
He is so Deam to good !! Love it!.... ;)
one of this guys peers in the same genre austin archey (lorna shoore) has a drum playthrough of there song "king ov deception" and it is one hell of a play through
Evgeny uses a blend of many techniques . Heel toe, swivel, heal down and heal up, slide technique. He does it all !!!
If your enjoying this and haven't seen it before, you should definitely watch Alex Rudinger play Xeonchrist. It's a classic video with some amazing technique.
Honestly, reacting to the full song of this wouldn't be a waste of your time if you haven't heard it. The vocals are absolutely insane.
You actually nailed what he's doing in that section with the really fast double bass when you said it sounds like a double stroke roll. If you watch closely you can see the heel-toe technique he's using.
My request: anything of Matt Halpern's playthroughs. Still metal, but I think you'll find his style a little less foreign.
Seconding Matt Halpern, his Marigold playthrough is probably my favorite (the Sweetwater one with vocals). He's got such good stank face when he really gets into it too, it's so entertaining
I just binged a few of your videos and think you would really enjoy the Overlord Openings and Endings, especially the Endings are really great.
What did i just watch 😮 mans INSANE
Mate, you should really check something by the amazing drummer Sebastian Lanser, that guy is like the perfect drummer when it comes to technical skills.
You should check out the actual video of this song its awesome
I really suggest you watch the official music video for this song, the mix is totally different and the vocals are some of the most impressive vocals metal had to offer
The consistency on the gravity blast comes from drum triggers.
I’m not a drummer, but that foot technique I think is referenced to as the ‘heel-toe’ technique (yes, that simple haha).
You should react to the most recent Lorna Shore song, Pain Remains I: Dancing Like Flames
Last comment for the night on this one 😆. ( I'm drunk btw) this is an amazing reaction man. So happy with how you analyzed this. Rock on my guy 🤘
Awesome drummer for sure even Alex is like we really really lucky to have amazing drummer and btw BAND-MAID just dropped new video influencer! It’s awesome 👏 hope you can react to it’s amazing 🤩 song 🎶
i love 1984 and baba yaga, they both have that groovy part that give me shivers
If you like insane drumming you should check out band called infant annihilator. They have at least one Drum Play-Through video on their channel
You should react to some of their songs. I suggest Bratva, its not a complex song but its brutal
Please react to some El Estepario Siberiano's video, he's amazing drummer(and also he can play with one hand) You'd like it😉
Bro, Deathcore drummers are legitimately talented.
6:16 This technique that you're referring to is called the Swivel technique. Many find that this technique delivers a more efficient speed, power and energy expended ratio. I think one drummer notable for this would be Derek Roddy.
Have you heard Slaughter to Prevail with the vocals yet? Cause you are severely missing out if not. Plus, you'll find out exactly why he made the sign of the cross at that particular point.
Highly highly recommend Matt Greiner’s drum playthrough of Paramount by August Burns Red. I promise you wont be disappointed!!
Would love to see a reaction to the drummer from Sleep token , he did a couple of play-through and i think you would love it , its so groovy and tecnichal
He beats those Snares like they owe him money
Женя лучший🔥
Nice reaction!! You should check out some of his drum videos for his other band Katalepsy, they are over on his channel.
Shave! LOL
Great reaction like allways Bro ;)
He also plays the sticks upside down I've never seen that before
Time for some Archspire / Spencer Prewett
Finaly, i like your reacts, and this one is insane. Let me see.
Don't know if you already did it because this is the first video that i see from you but i think you would like the drum cams from Mgla - Exercises for Futility V, Mgla age of Excuse VI and Dark Funeral - Vobiscum Sathanas. Both Maciej Kowalski (Darkside) and Nils "Dominator" Fjellström are complete beast mode drummers on 2 different ways
Tony! just found your channel today, love the anime vids, love the symphonic metal even more! Two great symphonic suggestions, "Sacred Worlds" by Blind Guardian. First time I heart this song I was riding a bicycle in a rain storm in Tokyo on spotify and pulled over into someones driveway, not due to the rain, but due amazement.
After that, Kamelot, but when Roy Khan was singing, the most emotional metal singer ever. Watch "Elizabeth I II III live". Its the most beautifully sung song ive ever heard.
It would be great to see your take on Austin Archey from Lorna Shore. He's got a couple drum play throughs out there.
It's like watching joey the first time in 98 or the rev in 02. Even Adler in 01. Wtf is going on here???!! Insanity man
Complete insanity
Metal drummer here for 16 years. It looks to me like he heel-toes a lot. Thats where, on the kick, you are almost getting two strokes with a single motion. You use the recoil from the toe strike and direct it back with the heel. When hes doing this and the speed that its done it looks like his feet are pretty flat against the pedal. I can heel-toe when i insert quick rolls, but my preferred method and the one thats more comfortable to me is called swivel. It does the exact same thing only you move your foot left to right very quickly like its on a hinge. The difference here is how the recoil is stopped and redirected back to the head. Swivel is more natural for me. Some people prefer heel-toe. I did catch him push into a quick swivel now and again but its mostly heel-toe. I believe what you saw and asked about, at around the 7 minute mark, was you also caught him doing some swivel.
Sweet. Thanks for the info. This stuff is wild!
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Evgeniy Novikov is pretty intense. There are a lot of great technical drummers out there in the world.
P.s. gonna give this one another 20 views just because it fucking slays 🤣🤘🤘🤘🤘
another amazing drummer you should check out is Mario Duplantier from Gojira. the music from the band is great but so is his solo drum solos he has released. think you would dig it.
Heel-toe/double stroke foot technique is hard. That’s when he strikes each pedal twice with each foot vs. single stroke. Look up Alex Rudinger!!!
Yanic Bercier from quo vadis and Gone in April is something to watch. There's drumthroughs and live drum cam footage
For another excellent drum playthrough, I can highly vouch for the drum cam version of Infant Annihilator’s ****crusher: ruclips.net/video/SImHi16cwqc/видео.html
If you click through to the video, you’ll understand why I replaced the first four letters with asterisks. And despite the song’s problematic title-to say the least-I can confirm that it’s undoubtedly a banger.
Actually I've seen only 2 drummers holding the sticks the opposite way - Vinnie Paul and Evgeny. It's very hard to have such control both in blasts and in transitions as holding the stick in it's thin part and hitting with the thick part requires some serious skills
Всем привет из России, парни. Мы тут тоже охуели от его техники. Евгений прекрасен. Всем удачи :)
The reason the rolls are so tight is becouse of post production, if you slowmo the video you can see the Visuals dont match the sound
Altough he is a great drummer
I think it’s called the swivel technique when he rotates his ankles
You should check out his play through of their newest song 1984!
I think you'll love the Gene Hoglan (The Atomic Clock) playthrough of 'The Philosopher'
You have to listen to Shiro Sagisu's "Sin From Genesis" or "The Final Decision We All Must Take". Well anything is good but I personally have a soft spot for his work on Evangelion
HELL DRUM PLAY THRUUU
Yeah, his swivel foot technique is sick bro!
You should check out Sepultura's drummer, because he does that too. Eloy Casagrande is the GOAT.
You should check out " Guns n roses" from the anime Baccanno. Very cool song, jazz as It finest, reminds a little of tank.
Also, New to the channel and I'm really digging the content, Big fan of japanese music and It is helping with my studies.
Yep heel toe technique and swivel technique
Seattle REP!!!
Just going to throw in... The trigger / sample on the snare is doing a lot of hard work here. 127 velocity every hit on the gravity blast. He can definitely play it, as you can see in live videos but it sounds ridiculous isolated from the song.
Yeah that makes sense. I showed this to my buddy and he was like "dude, triggers"
"daf*ck is that sh*t" --> Yep
