By far one of the best videos, I have watched. There are a lot of videos of mixers trying to explain what they do, but to actually watch them do it, unsolicited, in his natural element with no one is a real treat. I wasn't really concerned with what was going on with the sliders as I was with what Greg was doing with his facial expressions, body language, and eye movement. Watching how he listens, evaluates, adjusts, you can literally see when he is grooving to something and when he does not like something in his facial expressions. That is the gold stuff right there people at least for me, I get so much more information from his body language than I ever do by watching sliders on a screen move. Thank you, Gregory Scott, your videos are giving me an edge in school and have helped me tremendously in a very short time.

Man, thanks for getting it. There's a reason I keep my face on the screen the whole time and it's not because I want people to adore my grizzly mug. I've had the privilege of being in the room watching some top level guys work, and by far the most informative thing for me was what I saw on their face. A close second was where they were looking. By far my favorite aspect of mixing on an analog console is that you spend most of the time looking at the music, or (better) closing your eyes and turning knobs. People who mix ITB have never had that experience, which is a bummer. Anyway, thanks for paying attention 🤜🏻🤛🏽

Let me just take a second to appreciate what I'm hearing and looking at. I'm part of this new generation that learned everything through the internet, I've watched far too many videos on sound recording, mixing, playing. I come back to this channel, specifically the how to hear compression video, very frequently to reset my ears. You have not only understood the intricate emotionality of sound, but you've have figured out how to teach it far beyond the quality any school could offer.
I always found it curious that videos made by and for sound engineers sound and look quite bad. But Gregory, you have perfected it.
The balance between your voice and the music is perfect, the tone of your voice is perfectly unintrusive, you make the most minute, minimal, microscopic difference in tone sound worlds apart. You make 30 minute single take, single angle videos far more informative and thought provoking than any course or workshop I've sat through.
It's the small things, you're not an engineer, you're an artist. Your visual presentation is inspiring, the framing and color composition of your videos is exactly what is needed to get into the zone without being distracting.
In short, I'm amazed. Every time I've wanted to explain the finesse in what we do to someone I've either shown them your videos or tried to emulate what I felt when I first found your channel. Thank you for being the absolute best teacher on this platform, thank you for giving this to us for free.

@@TheHouseofKushTV I will sign up if it's online in the evening :)
Combining a work life with family and music isn't always easy.
At the moment I am struggling with a track where the snare and clap have too much dynamics, now the problem is that it's not consistent.
When I encounter problems like that, I am instantly looking through your channel to see if any video would fit what problem I have. I like them so much. You are very calm and good with explaining the technical details so that everyone can understand it.
As I understand, some people use saturation and then hit a compressor to limit the dynamic range. Others just slam a limiter on the track and others are using only a limiter. I am actually thinking about surgically going in and editing these single hits that has too much volume to solve it.
It can be quite unpleasant to listen to, especially because snare and claps are quite high frequency with fast attack already.
      Got some thinking to do...

When you said you were going to explain with your body how you felt the different compression grooves I thought I had gotten to "that point" in compression videos where I get lost in the intention of it all. I can often understand what many of the compressor moves are doing, but I've always struggled to understand how they fit in a bigger picture, and usually people's explanations don't do much to help.
This was not at all the case in this video. Everything clicked with the hand movements, goddammit. You rock.

I've been using parallel compression on my drums for years, but never thought to have more than one compressed version. The idea of having several compressed versions each bringing to the table a different aspect of the sound was mind blowing for me. I've just given it a try with my current mix and the result is one of the best drum sounds I've ever gotten -- and it's a poorly tracked live recording with more bleed than a slaughterhouse! Thanks for the paradigm shift.

Jeez Gregory, you are always bringing some high level shit to the party. I wish I had the feel, as well as access to the emotional side of things. Often times we neglect that aspect and don't learn to develop that ability. By ability, I mean the know how to access, and analyze the emotional result of our mixing moves. Maybe I am just emotionally bankrupt.

    • @TheHouseofKushTV
      @TheHouseofKushTV  2 года назад +42

Oh, hell man, the fact that you're even thinking about it is actually a huge sign that you're on the path. You'll find your version of it, for some of us it just takes a long time, for me it was close to 5 decades. It all happens inside and thru the body, and it's incredibly hard to stay connected to our body when we're focused, and doubly so when we're focused on a bright colorful screen.
At the risk of getting too pedantic, I can offer two pieces of advice. First, get out of your chair when mixing. Stand, walk around, be able to move. Second, watch me move (or not) when I'm actually mixing these sounds, you'll see that I'm pretty much just pushing faders around and squinting lifelessly, and then at some point my face reacts and my head starts to jiggle and then one or two moves later I light up and get all bobblehead. And most of all: I NOTICED THIS. My body felt the groove come together, it liked what it heard, and I respected that. That's really all there is to it, and I say that knowing it's a lot.
We all move uncontrollably in some way(s) when music grabs us. Lots of dudes just bob their heads, some people pump their fists and scrunch their faces, some twerk their booty and slowfuck the air... doesn't matter, just know your body's language for 'yes please more please' and learn to spot when it's happening while you mix. 🕺

I've noticed analog compression makes things sound like they are in a place or in like some sort of super subtle "reverb" in the mix, even when the compressor isn't doing anything and is just ran through. That alongside the obvious changes compressors can make to transients make this now the most important tool alongside EQ. Super eye opening video man thank you.

Your comments at 27 minutes about adding tambourine or shakers and THEN turning down the drums a bit as you do so, and your mentioning of introducing the (dry) THUD of the drum kit etc. etc. is pure genius! Great, great inspiration! No need for a track to sound "the same" from beginning to end! It's nice to give our brains something switched around during a mix. LOL

I remember years ago my mastering engineer sent me a video of the clariphonic...I was blown away...I wanted to have it! It just sounded Expensive When the plugin version dropped it became the first plugin I purchased in 2012... You have always given deep insight and plugins that not only do their job, but help to give an emotional response and realism. In this video you can actually visualize the drummer hitting the hihat. The sound comes alive. Your contribution to the audio community continues to be inspiring. Thank you for this..

Really like the crush signal, puts that 1 to 2k „tap“ impulse that’s so important to the feel , but few people give that area much love because they feel it’ll be hard or get in the vocal’s way, but that snap transient is so important, when it’s there it takes the need to turn the drums up away, gets a natural balance back in there, well done, great video, informative as always…

    • @TheHouseofKushTV
      @TheHouseofKushTV  2 года назад +2

Agreed. 500Hz can also give that same transient impact as 2k, but with a woody, tough vibe rather than sharper metallic crack.

@@TheHouseofKushTV I try and get that area from my overheads, which by me sit behind the Drummer snare side about 1.8 m high and floor Tom side about 0.9 m high but both exactly the same distance from the snare drum, usually have them full range, HO @ 70-90Hz, it’s the core of my sound, close mics I use to “fill in” the sound and bring out particular character parts of the individual drums, all phase, and sometimes time aligned aligned too to an omni measurement microphone placed above the kick equidistant to floor and snare, use that for a bit of mono dirt or crush as needed…works for me…

It's almost the middle of 2023, and this video hasn't aged a day.
Dear Gregory, I could've written this under any or all of your videos, and there would always be the same conclusion...
As a person who is turning 50, I have had the luck to live off of and with music - from the music and for the music. So I lived through all these changes in the Recording / Mixing / Producing world - I have tried it all - from the cheapest studios to those worth 100s of thousands of $$$.
But In all these years I met so very few people like You.
You are, as "oxymoronic" as it sounds, so "down-to-earth-spiritual" kind of person, and everything that so many psychological self help books try to teach you, which you actually can't learn, but you can recognize it when someone is born with it and has shaped it to perfection.
How opposite of everything else on the Internet.
The rest is all the same - too loud, too shiny, too bright, copy-pasted stuff.
This is why your content (no, I can't call it "stuff", it urges for distinction from others) is so great. I have been subscribed to Kush Bundle more than once for a certain period of time, when I needed to mix and produce, and will do it again & again, until it is available...
Love your Plugins a lot! Hardware is, unfortunately, too far away from me - over the ocean and more...
But the way you teach and/or explain them, with, again, laid-back, easy on the ears, "low-key" way is amazing.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and enriching both us who have been in the business since analogue days, and produced more than few published and successful records, as well as all younger (or older) artists who are learning it from the beginning now, doesn't matter if it is hobby or business.
It really teaches, reminds and upgrades everyone's knowledge. Simply Perfect!
I would like to ask you a geeky question, but I understand if you, for the sake of business, don't want to, or can't answer it...
And the question is, would you just quickly compare each of those 4 compressors to other standard ones, after which you probably (as every clever person deos), modeled them after, and then upgraded them to perfection --- which they are! -
They definitely have the "Sauce" of their own - But which of those 4 in the Series are they made after? L2A, 76, Puig, Dbx, API - I think I can recognize some of them, but I would like to know which was your inspiration for Kush Compressors.
And another, much less important stuff - but - which DAW are you using up there - is it a Cubase with adjusted Mask, or Reaper with adjusted mask or something third....
Another thing which is stirred to perfection - the "look-of-it-all" - Design is just splendid as all the rest!
Keep doing this, please - and I will just hope that You won't ever have to sell your business to someone, who will then make you leave the steering wheel.
I understand that people have to make business decisions for prosperity, but I am sure that the entire world of Audio, especially the part that had the luck to run into Your content, would be devastated.
I try not to measure the world with my measurements - but that last fact is something that I am pretty damn sure everyone will agree with.
Once again, thank You Gregory! - And I strongly advice anyone who hasn't already - to try these VST-s, they are definitely (another Oxymoron) - Standardly Unique!

Part of the magic of what you do is how it works for so many levels of experience among your viewers. Some of us never tried parallel compression at all, and some of us tried it with one compression bus but haven't really *gotten* it. Some of us have seen the value but never tried it with four buses and learned what you just taught us about mixing the tones/grooves. Like. some of us -- let's say a friend of mine -- have flipped through the presets on, oh, I don't know, let's say the UBK-1 and thought 'This sounds good.' 'This doesn't.' 'This is pumping too much,' or 'this one's too bright,' and never thought about going with four plugins or instances in parallel like this to gain the benefits of each and smooth over the less-desired contributions. I'm sure such people -- you know, like my, uh, friend -- are grateful.
