    It's been almost a month, and I've only seen the woodpecker one time; he landed then flew away. I spent a couple weekends patching, sanding, priming, and painting, and the finished job looks like never had a woodpecker problem.

    I hope they work out for you. I've seen the woodpecker since I put up the spiders, but it hasn't done any pecking. It has since moved on to pecking on a neighbor's chimney cap.

    who would scare away such a rare and endangered birb?

      Captain Giratina I agree that it's a beautiful bird...that I don't mind admiring from afar and not pecking on the side of my house. 😀

    But how long do the batteries last? And are those things weatherproof if I hang it from an exposed pipe?

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice  8 лет назад

      Yeah, as I commented in an earlier post, the battery life seemed short in part because my neighbor has dogs that bark a lot and activate the spiders. I can't comment on weather resistance, since I don't have them exposed. You might want to email bugspray.com directly.

      Yes, they work fairly well. I've found that they can go through batteries quickly if there's a lot of noise in the area (barking dogs, airplanes overhead, etc).

    are those holes from the woodpecker?

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice  4 года назад

      The round holes are soffit vents. Below the holes @5:18, you can see the woodpecker damage.

    • @nycmaverick
      @nycmaverick 4 года назад

      @@DIYApprentice Yes thats what I thought. Do you think that the vents present themselves like Pecker holes and attract the birds?

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice  4 года назад

      @@nycmaverick I guess it's possible they are attracted to the vent holes and see them as nesting opportunities. I read they might be looking for insects in the siding or mating when they peck.

      @@ralphlaguna5433 What would you suggest as a remedy? I keep seeing reasons for the appearance of woodpeckers, but no solutions are offered - not very helpful for others who may have the same issue. I did not see any evidence of "food" when I repaired the soffit damage last year. Researching the issue, food sources are not the sole reasons woodpeckers drum: Establishing territory and mating are other reasons. On rare occasions, a woodpecker also drums on my metal chimney cap.

    I have a cedar house and woodpeckers are eating it. Can I hang them down the sides of my house

    • @DIYApprentice
      @DIYApprentice  4 года назад

      Ugh, sorry to hear that woodpeckers are causing that much damage - must be very frustrating. The spiders are best hung under an overhang, but some threaded hooks would work to space them away from the wall a little. The one problem I've had with the them is the batteries don't last long because they react to barking dogs, airplanes flying overhead, etc. There are other gadgets such as reflective pin wheels that others have tried. Fortunately, for now, the woodpecker I'd seen for years seems to have moved on - don't think it died, since it has shown up on a couple occasions over about the last 6-8 months.

      L Hale I got them here for $20 ea: www.bugspraycart.com/?s=woodpecker
      I had to replace the ones I bought a few years ago because I didn't keep up on the battery changes and corrosion developed; a tenacious woodpecker prompted the reorder. He hasn't returned since the new spiders were hung.

  • @DIYApprentice
    @DIYApprentice  11 лет назад

    Yes, they're still working. The batteries have to be changed more often than I prefer, though. Trying to protect a whole wall might be a challenge, since the spiders might not be close enough to spook the woodpecker. The spiders do pick up sounds from well above and below where they're currently positioned (my neighbor's dog barking, airplanes flying overhead, etc).

    I had a woodpecker peck five holes in my upstairs storage - I kept covering the holes with Flex tape and then he would make another - finally as a deterrent I used two lightweight grocery bags - I pinned then upside down and they move about so eerily they really look like live creatures - I've had them up for a month now and he hasn't been back -

    When the woodpeckers, always the ones with black and a red top on its head go for my windows, I am in an upstairs apt (disabled/senior Apts) in Rogue River, Oregon and the attack my windows every season except Winter. The windows are the worst. Why do they start at sunrise and stop at sunset, almost lol. There are so many dogs here barking, I'm afraid the batteries will wear out in hours. Are there any bright moving toys to set on my front and back patios. I can tell you they have the greatest hearing. They here me get out of bed, flush toilet, anything and the nightmare begins. We have some owls do the quiet hoo hoo and that doesn't scare them. Thank You

      Yes. For what it's worth, I had to reposition the spiders so they weren't so spread apart from each other and in close proximity to the woodpecker's typical pecking locations.

    Hang deer netting! It is 3/8" squares the spoke the birds. First, it is dirt cheap, sold at home improvement stores. 8 feet X 100 feet long. It is black nylon, impervious to weather. Just hangs from sofit or facia board where shingles meet the painter vertical board. At 8 feet X 100 feet for $10 or less, unroll, hang below pecker activity, hang straight with 6" overlap, roll top after cutting with scissors and roll tight. Staple with strong stapler or use chicken wire staples. But needle nose vise grips (Harbor Freight) grab one edge and roll top at angle to allow netting to a hang straight down, but roll the top at the angle of roof. Use tape, twist ties but tack 3-4 time to hold just under shingles edge. The netting weighs nothing. Overlap each section 6" or more, but let hang below woodpeckers activity because they like higher up. The netting is black and your house is yellow! Your wife ways hell no! No problem, find a few cans of paint the matches the field and then trim, but spend $5 on rust oleum spray can hand nozzle as it work on every brand. Lay the netting on cardboard or grass yard, spray a color the matches close. Use cardboard and second color for trim. Allow to hang 6-10" away for wall boards as they are uncomfortable going underneath and can't use the grip to put holes in siding.
    Take it from a farm boy who thinks thru ways of keeping these birds, migratory in nature, 300 species, moving East because of stupid western policies on page 3964-6 that protect these migratory birds until the do $12k in damage to their house, then laws change. Until then, use painted deer netting that nobody will notice. I insulated my exterior walls in an envelope that added R14 to my R14.2 walls. Now R22.1 and cozy as a thermos bottle using "EIFS" system. Want more info, check out "STO" (Yellow Bucket People) for info.
    It dropped my heating, cooling and sound by over half...No Joke! 22 years no problem until Western local & state policies made it illegal to remove dead trees, brush and dead vegetation from the landscape and forest areas. El Natural Landscape! Dumb Assssssees!!. In the land of dry lighting strikes! So, woodpeckers migrated to the Midwest. Pizza, body shops, call centers, every commercial building is being hit with these pest for 6+ years. Stupid left-wing policies had bit us in the rear. Great! Fight back as smoke has driven these birds East into the Midwest and beyond. My Daisy BB rifle is my friend! Is anyone in government office your friend. NO! So, money you spent to heat and cool your house and now your house is threaded. You pay $500 per month for utilities (Water not Included / 5k gallons average low for family of 5 + dog) if you cut noise and utilities to $220 is that money in your pocket. Yes. You can insulate that attic, you can insulate under the house. NO! Right. Nothing. But the exterior is the largest sq ft that touches hot and cold. Insulate it, 2% fade over 20 years, hail resistant, Meets or exceeds Miami Dade-County building specs, quieter and utilities drop by over half!
    DK, Midwest ex-farm boy!
