I can't agree more with this. From what we're seeing, it's showing us how much of a good relationship Mario and Luigi have with each other. I never thought a bad brother, but I do think the movie will convince people that Mario really does value Luigi. As you said, when Mario & Rabbids: Kingdom Battle started, who's the first person Mario wants to save? Luigi. And what happened in Luigi's Mansion when Mario was thankful that Luigi saved him. I can't wait to finally get my first real taste into what Mario has to offer when I get the chance to see this movie. People saying Mario Is a bad brother is like people saying Kirby is evil. They focus on a popular opinion, take it to seriously, and don't even attempt to find the evidence, or better yet, try to oppose the argument.

Additionally, They even have a small detail on their plumbing van which shows a picture of Mario on one side of the van and a picture of Luigi on the other side (Showing that Mario doesn't want to receive all the credit in their plumbing business). It's safe to say that Nintendo is doing everything they can to stop the narrative of Mario being a "bad brother".

Imo Mario's a great brother in the games as well. Yeah, he may get super competitive with Luigi in the sports and kart games, but he's also extremely supportive of Luigi, particularly in the Mario & Luigi games. The Bros are at their strongest when they're together, as seen with their bros attacks which deal a devastating amount of damage. It's also worth mentioning that Luigi went out of his way to save Mario multiple times and they hug each other each time Mario is rescued

Alongside Sonic and Tails' brotherly relationship, Mario and Luigi's is honestly one of the healthiest of all. Luigi's so kind-hearted, thoughtful, and selfless that he'd never plan overthrow his own brother by killing him to win the competition and get all the glory(looking at you, Scar).
Mario's interactions with Luigi are just what brothers do, they may fight and compare themselves to one another but it is something siblings do for fun. They both are relieved when they meet up again when being split up by unexpected events. Still, I do wonder what Mario and Luigi's interactions were during the events in subspace emissary when they meet up together during a universe-treating event.
And also that Luigi actually doesn't mind being 2nd place to Mario. Charles Martinet said so once. He loves being by his side no matter what, and that Mario cares for and respects his brother always.
the new movie proves that Mario deep down loves his little brother to death, and i didn’t even know Luigi was the younger one 😂 it is just how siblings are in general. there’s ups and downs but in the end it’s an unbeatable bond between M&L. as the oldest sibling i’ll do anything for my youngest.
Honestly, Mario is a good brother but there may be some times when they argued like when Mario was making his basement a mess and Luigi was mad. All siblings argue sometimes with each other, it’s a normal thing. Mario and Luigi would go out of their ways to save each other.
Yep. A *bad* brother would have punched Luigi in the face, stole the trophy, called him a bleep, etc. while never getting over the fact that he lost, or even admitting he lost in the first place. He'd hold the grudge for years, maybe for the rest of his life. A *normal* brother would accept their loss but still call Luigi a "loser" or "cheater" or something, maybe elbow him in the side, or as Mario did, step on his foot. But he'd eventually calm down and years later look back on this day and laugh. A *great* brother would be so happy for Luigi he wouldn't even care that he lost. Mario's not a *bad* brother. He's just a very competitive guy who loves his bro but won't hold back.

I agree. Mario wants his brother to be safe that why he’s going on this adventure. Another scene I’d like to mention is where Toad tells Mario that his brother has landed in the dark lands showing that Toad wants this guy to reunite with his brother. I’ve been wanting to see proper characterization from these characters for years now and is the main reason as to why I’m so excited. Not for the references, but for the substance within the movie itself

With Bowser remaining as a threat towards Mario, the relations between Mario and DK would be very interesting to see how it would play out after their fight at the arena.
The reason why the Mario brothers have such a competitive relationship is simply because they're *video game characters!* Their personalities and abilities are supposed mirror the real world with the people who play these games. This is how Nintendo creates their video games. They want the players to have a relationship with the avatars they play as. Just like how people view characters in a movie

I heard Charlie Day is interested in doing a Luigi's Mansion movie. If they end up making it, we would see a reverse where now Luigi has to rescue Mario. Just like in the game. I like the direction they are taking the story where Luigi is the one who has to be rescued. It has grounds to really explore the brothers' relationship. Not mention it puts Peach in more of a heroic role.
Honestly, I've always thought of Mario as just doing his role as an older brother. He messes with Luigi like any older brother would. That doesn't exactly make him a bad brother, because he obviously cares about Luigi.

The one narrative this movie accidentally created that needs to stop is the shipping of bowser and Luigi. It's insane that people scrape the bottom of the barrel to create "ships". Luigi is literally a captive being tortured and the masses are trying to push a "romantic" context.

So you ARE right that it did do that. Just going to say that for me, I always viewed it as a sort of "No one messes with my brother but me!" kind of relationship.
Even though it's not really canon, I'd like to mention the Oh Brother episode of the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon, which furthers the point that Mario and Luigi do indeed argue, fight, and make up like other siblings would. But even with all the bickering, they both genuinely care for one another. Moreso than people like to think. Luigi looks up to Mario like any younger sibling would to an older one. This is proven in the Dream's Deep section in Dream Team where Luigi says that he can jump really high and fight ghost, feeling like he needs to constantly prove his worth to Mario. And in other games, like Luigi's Mansion, it's shown that Mario really does see him as a hero. Very proud of him, and even goes out of his way of calling Luigi #1. In Superstar Saga, they make an amazing team together. They have incredible acrobatic skills that allows them to reach areas that they normally couldn't alone, or to even take down the toughest of baddies with their Bro Attacks. I'd like to say more, I might as well stop my ramblings here. My point is that the Mario Bros. have some of the best sibling dynamics in any sort of media, and I'm glad that other people are acknowledging that.

Matpat's a great entertainer. Most of his fans are well aware that most of his theories aren't intended to be canon-accurate. The point of Matpat's videos are just to take an idea and poke around with it, not to find out what the developers intentions were. If matpat were making actual, canonically feasible theories? His content would be a hell of a lot more boring. I don't get why so many people feel the need to kill the fun when it comes to these kinds of goofball theories. I don't think a single person over the age of 10 actually thinks mario is CANONICALLY evil or a bad brother. They just think it would be funny if he was, so they ignore canon. It’s almost like people don’t understand brotherly relationships. Brothers compete and are intense with each other. They still love each other but because we are bros we sometimes go a little to far. I mean just look at the RPGS and 3D land. Mario goes and saves Luigi and is happy to see him or galaxy where he saves him from the boos, Luigi’s mansion ect.

I don’t think Mario is a bad brother, however, I do think he’s very _very_ competitive. It would make sense because most of those scene people mention that he’s a bad brother is when he’s playing sports with his bro. I think Mario cares a lot for his brother and loves him, but he’s also not perfect and maybe sometimes gets carried away, he doesn’t realize how much his competitiveness can get the better of him. Also, they’re _brothers,_ of course there’s gonna be a little tension now and then because that’s just what siblings do, I would know, I have 2 sisters and 1 brother and we get on each other nerves sometimes, but that doesn’t mean we hate each other. All in all, I’m *super* hyped for this movie, and I’m also excited to see what changes this movie will do to the characters in question.

While we're on the subject of the 'Bad Brother' narrative: This sort of dilemma has happened in the Cuphead franchise, namely in the game and The Cuphead Show. In Cuphead the game and other comics, a lot of the narratives demonstrate how Cuphead and Mugman are really close with each other. To state the obvious, it's even written in The Art of Cuphead that 'They're not just brothers, they're best buds who have each other's backs' (Note: Not exactly copied but it's the same context). However, in The Cuphead Show, they decided to portray their relationship as bitter and they want to paint Cuphead as this 'Bad Brother' type that takes Mugman for granted. I'm glad that Super Mario The Movie will be one of the starting and few examples that demonstrate healthier sibling relationships, we need a lot more and I MEAN a lot more than that! A lot of the media just tend to portray bad relationships and we really need to change that.
I think the reason why Mario stepped on Luigi's foot in Mario tennis when Luigi won was because he was pretty jealous. Heck I would be too. (If I had any siblings.)

To the people who think Mario is a bad brother for picking on his brother occasionally, they have probably never had a "little" (or one that's close in age) brother. Having a brother is... complicated. Half the time, you want to kill each other, other half, you will be best buds. I've got a brother that's 5 years younger than I am, and I might pick at him every now and then. But if somebody makes it known they take pleasure in hurting them, and I find out, they just made the biggest mistake they could ever do. Mario is just being an older brother to Luigi.
Interesting topic! I haven't thought about this. I'd been a Super Mario Bros. fan since I was a little girl (8 years-old). I'm an adult now. I used to play the games and watch the old cartoons shows. Mario and Luigi do get competitive in the cartoons but they still care for one another.

This theory is very accurate in so many ways, first, in the Movie all he wants to do is save Luigi. Mario and Luigi have been tight as brothers, but somehow things have been assumed that Mario is a terrible brother to Luigi. This has been turned into videos and other memes of comedic sorts. But long story short, it's due to the fact that Luigi's shortcomings and him being in his brother's shadow has made him the butt of jokes. So, things can be awkward, when Mario and Luigi still care about each other as brothers. Heck the fact that Mario is saving Luigi in this movie, mirrors the original script of the 1st Super Mario Bros. movie back in the day. Before the script was changed into that of rescuing Princess Daisy, it was changed up a few times prior to the current script for the final version. The original was Mario journeying to save his brother in one of those scripts. There was also the original saving Princess Peach (known as Toadstool back then in the U.S.), but the brothers had moments of their bond during the adventure. As much as people can persist about what they perceived with Mario and Luigi, they aren't terrible to each other. Mario and Luigi series shows that in spades. And they will hopefully this long assumption caused by people who look into their brotherly relationship too hard and assume the worst.
Or maybe everyone's aware that mario is CANONICALLY a good brother, but they just don't care because it's a lot more funny to make him a bad brother for bits and stuff.
I can agree with this. I never saw either of them as bad brothers. In tons of tv shows, anime, and even in movies you'll see the bond of brothers is either slight rivalry or even rivalry in general as a main villain or just them being supportive. Imo the Mario brothers have always had an unbroken bond or rivalry but I'd never call Mario a bad brother just because of how he is. Sometimes I could see why but I never called him a bad brother for most of it because they always made up for it by being there for each other.
personally, I think it comes down to siblings being siblings. Me and my older sister seem to share a lot of similarities with them. She used to make fun of me all the time, but we got older and the pandemic hit, we started to finally get along more and it looked like our relationship was getting better, but now I feel like I'm below her just as much as I did before. That doesn't change the fact that I'd risk my life for her, and THAT doesn't change the fact that she makes me feel like she's better than me, whether it's on purpose or not.

the new movie proves that Mario deep down loves his little brother to death, and i didn’t even know Luigi was the younger one 😂 it is just how siblings are in general. there’s ups and downs but in the end it’s an unbeatable bond between M&L. as the oldest sibling i’ll do anything for my youngest.
Honestly, Mario is a good brother but there may be some times when they argued like when Mario was making his basement a mess and Luigi was mad. All siblings argue sometimes with each other, it’s a normal thing. Mario and Luigi would go out of their ways to save each other.

A *bad* brother would have punched Luigi in the face, stole the trophy, called him a bleep, etc. while never getting over the fact that he lost, or even admitting he lost in the first place. He'd hold the grudge for years, maybe for the rest of his life.
A *normal* brother would accept their loss but still call Luigi a "loser" or "cheater" or something, maybe elbow him in the side, or as Mario did, step on his foot. But he'd eventually calm down and years later look back on this day and laugh.
A *great* brother would be so happy for Luigi he wouldn't even care that he lost.
Mario's not a *bad* brother. He's just a very competitive guy who loves his bro but won't hold back.

I agree. Mario wants his brother to be safe that why he’s going on this adventure. Another scene I’d like to mention is where Toad tells Mario that his brother has landed in the dark lands showing that Toad wants this guy to reunite with his brother. I’ve been wanting to see proper characterization from these characters for years now and is the main reason as to why I’m so excited. Not for the references, but for the substance within the movie itself

The reason why the Mario brothers have such a competitive relationship is simply because they're *video game characters!* Their personalities and abilities are supposed mirror the real world with the people who play these games. This is how Nintendo creates their video games. They want the players to have a relationship with the avatars they play as. Just like how people view characters in a movie

I heard Charlie Day is interested in doing a Luigi's Mansion movie. If they end up making it, we would see a reverse where now Luigi has to rescue Mario. Just like in the game.
I like the direction they are taking the story where Luigi is the one who has to be rescued. It has grounds to really explore the brothers' relationship. Not mention it puts Peach in more of a heroic role.
Honestly, I've always thought of Mario as just doing his role as an older brother. He messes with Luigi like any older brother would. That doesn't exactly make him a bad brother, because he obviously cares about Luigi.

I never once thought that Mario was a bad brother. I'm not like the biggest Mario fan, I havent' played all the games (spin off, main line etc...) but I thought it was clear for most people that Mario care for his brother. Hopefully the movie will change this narrative

The one narrative this movie accidentally created that needs to stop is the shipping of bowser and Luigi. It's insane that people scrape the bottom of the barrel to create "ships". Luigi is literally a captive being tortured and the masses are trying to push a "romantic" context.

So you ARE right that it did do that. Just going to say that for me, I always viewed it as a sort of "No one messes with my brother but me!" kind of relationship.
Even though it's not really canon, I'd like to mention the Oh Brother episode of the Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon, which furthers the point that Mario and Luigi do indeed argue, fight, and make up like other siblings would.
But even with all the bickering, they both genuinely care for one another. Moreso than people like to think. Luigi looks up to Mario like any younger sibling would to an older one. This is proven in the Dream's Deep section in Dream Team where Luigi says that he can jump really high and fight ghost, feeling like he needs to constantly prove his worth to Mario.
And in other games, like Luigi's Mansion, it's shown that Mario really does see him as a hero. Very proud of him, and even goes out of his way of calling Luigi #1. In Superstar Saga, they make an amazing team together. They have incredible acrobatic skills that allows them to reach areas that they normally couldn't alone, or to even take down the toughest of baddies with their Bro Attacks.
I'd like to say more, I might as well stop my ramblings here. My point is that the Mario Bros. have some of the best sibling dynamics in any sort of media, and I'm glad that other people are acknowledging that.

It’s almost like people don’t understand brotherly relationships. Brothers compete and are intense with each other. They still love each other but because we are bros we sometimes go a little to far. I mean just look at the RPGS and 3D land. Mario goes and saves Luigi and is happy to see him or galaxy where he saves him from the boos, Luigi’s mansion ect.

I don’t think Mario is a bad brother, however, I do think he’s very _very_ competitive. It would make sense because most of those scene people mention that he’s a bad brother is when he’s playing sports with his bro.
I think Mario cares a lot for his brother and loves him, but he’s also not perfect and maybe sometimes gets carried away, he doesn’t realize how much his competitiveness can get the better of him.
Also, they’re _brothers,_ of course there’s gonna be a little tension now and then because that’s just what siblings do, I would know, I have 2 sisters and 1 brother and we get on each other nerves sometimes, but that doesn’t mean we hate each other.
All in all, I’m *super* hyped for this movie, and I’m also excited to see what changes this movie will do to the characters in question.

While we're on the subject of the 'Bad Brother' narrative:
This sort of dilemma has happened in the Cuphead franchise, namely in the game and The Cuphead Show.
In Cuphead the game and other comics, a lot of the narratives demonstrate how Cuphead and Mugman are really close with each other. To state the obvious, it's even written in The Art of Cuphead that 'They're not just brothers, they're best buds who have each other's backs' (Note: Not exactly copied but it's the same context).
However, in The Cuphead Show, they decided to portray their relationship as bitter and they want to paint Cuphead as this 'Bad Brother' type that takes Mugman for granted.
I'm glad that Super Mario The Movie will be one of the starting and few examples that demonstrate healthier sibling relationships, we need a lot more and I MEAN a lot more than that! A lot of the media just tend to portray bad relationships and we really need to change that.
I think the reason why Mario stepped on Luigi's foot in Mario tennis when Luigi won was because he was pretty jealous. Heck I would be too. (If I had any siblings.)

I’ve always liked him and Luigi equally and I love the brotherly relationship they have throughout the games, and even the shows as well. Interesting topic! I haven't thought about this. I'd been a Super Mario Bros. fan since I was a little girl (8 years-old). I'm an adult now. I used to play the games and watch the old cartoons shows. Mario and Luigi do get competitive in the cartoons but they still care for one another.

Mario and Luigi have been tight as brothers, but somehow things have been assumed that Mario is a terrible brother to Luigi. This has been turned into videos and other memes of comedic sorts. But long story short, it's due to the fact that Luigi's shortcomings and him being in his brother's shadow has made him the butt of jokes. So, things can be awkward, when Mario and Luigi still care about each other as brothers. Heck the fact that Mario is saving Luigi in this movie, mirrors the original script of the 1st Super Mario Bros. movie back in the day. Before the script was changed into that of rescuing Princess Daisy, it was changed up a few times prior to the current script for the final version. The original was Mario journeying to save his brother in one of those scripts. There was also the original saving Princess Peach (known as Toadstool back then in the U.S.), but the brothers had moments of their bond during the adventure. As much as people can persist about what they perceived with Mario and Luigi, they aren't terrible to each other. Mario and Luigi series shows that in spades. And they will hopefully this long assumption caused by people who look into their brotherly relationship too hard and assume the worst.
Or maybe everyone's aware that mario is CANONICALLY a good brother, but they just don't care because it's a lot more funny to make him a bad brother for bits and stuff.

I can agree with this. I never saw either of them as bad brothers. In tons of tv shows, anime, and even in movies you'll see the bond of brothers is either slight rivalry or even rivalry in general as a main villain or just them being supportive. Imo the Mario brothers have always had an unbroken bond or rivalry but I'd never call Mario a bad brother just because of how he is. Sometimes I could see why but I never called him a bad brother for most of it because they always made up for it by being there for each other.

personally, I think it comes down to siblings being siblings. Me and my older sister seem to share a lot of similarities with them. She used to make fun of me all the time, but we got older and the pandemic hit, we started to finally get along more and it looked like our relationship was getting better, but now I feel like I'm below her just as much as I did before.
That doesn't change the fact that I'd risk my life for her, and THAT doesn't change the fact that she makes me feel like she's better than me, whether it's on purpose or not.
