- A police pursuit of a shooting suspect through the East Bay on I-80 Friday afternoon came to a halt in Fairfield, starting an hours-long standoff that shut down the freeway in both directions.

My mother witnessed the opening moments of this. She saw 10 chp find this guy in parking lot next to a busy shopping center. This happened at two and I think his car was stopped at 330. Dudes been keeping the cops busy all day

No he was alive well into the 2nd hour
Got into this traffic mess at 4 and didnt get out until 9 pm. A million accidents littered the entire highway throughout the traffic and a guy being resuscitated going eastbound.
It’s still backed up in Fairfield. Took me 5 hours too.
From hwy 37 to Cordelia took 3hrs - saw bunch of people peeing on the side of the freeway
I pooped in a bag and peed in a jar I had in the car. I’m still in traffic and it’s been 5 hours.
Everyone gotta buy personal urinals and bedpans and leave in each car.
So if you have 5 young children = 5 urinals & 5 bedpans.

There was traffic backed up 5 miles on 80 westbound (4 lanes), 6 miles on 80 eastbound (4 lanes), 9 miles on 680 Northbound (2 lanes), and 4 miles on 12 eastbound (2 lanes). If you figure each vehicle occupies ~50' of road, that's ~35k vehicles. Let's figure each vehicle carries 1.5 people, and that they've been stopped for an average of 2 hours. That works out to ~18 years of wasted time for all those people together.
And it ends with the guy offing himself anyways.
Seems like the cops could have literally saved more human life (as measured in net hours) by just pushing him out of the way with the bearcat three hours ago. He may have even lived, and if he hadn't, the amount of net wasted lifespan wouldn't have been radically different.
Just my 2¢.
I agree...I kept saying "poor people" having to deal with this. I'm sure many flights were missed, amongst just lost hours and who knows what else.
Also, this definitely cost >$50K in excess hours & maintenance billed by the various police units involved (and don't forget their helicopter).
Then you add in the economic impact of ~50K people losing hours to stewing in negative emotion, staring out their windshield, listening to the radio, idling their engines.
Again, just saying...I'm not convinced that trying to negotiate with him was actually the most ethical course of action.

@@OccasionalVids They approached that vehicle like Genghis Khan or Bruce Banner was in it. Trying to wait him out, 2 Bearcats, 2-3 failed attempts at getting a smoke grenade in the car too. Not sure what role negotiations may have played.

I don’t understand ca, extra cautious chase methods. There was plenty of wide open sections with no other cars where they could have used a pit/tvi to stop a dangerous person before he reached a more populated area. The bloke on top of the bearcat attempted to shoot over twenty some rounds of tear gas through the back window but I guess they didn’t arm. I figured he took his own life when there was no signs of movement with all that activity. It was interesting to watch how our Bay Area swat teams handle situations such as this. It was typical a whole lot of boredom of just hurry up and wait.

Lol, he really didn't save taxpayers anything... thousands of people including myself stuck in this mess! Luckily I noticed there was a problem pretty damn quick while approaching Fairfield and was barely able to exit back to Vallejo. Those who didn't get out immediately are still stuck hours later

Just imagine how many more roadrage incidents are taking place because of this!
They were multiple chances to do pit maneuver or block the car but were not done. The longer the suspect is on the road the greater the risks of harm to the public. If an officer is concerned about his safety and have no intention of doing anything anyway, then leave the scene, it's not for you. Go somewhere else where you can be of use to serve the public. There's no point in staying and standing around. Two SWAT teams are more than enough to deal with it.
