It wouldn't be a Gavin Hoey video without adding some clarity in post :) Once again well done. You always seem to come up with some great photo shoot ideas.
What an inspiration! I bought the blinds and acrylic panel and did my own film noir photo using your demonstration. Wonderful to see how you do so many things in a small space.
i seem to gravitate towards black and white Photography from my early studies of Sean Tucker and his recommending to study Fan Ho this is a great tutorial by Mr, Hoey this is school for me, love this class
Wow that looks amazing ! What about if you dont have these flash units (like me) just getting some lamps or torches [flash lights] to add the additional light ? Maybe it wouldn't mattter about the white balance as you are making it black and white ?
This rocked! Thank you for all of the tips - as it will set me up for more tips on my next vintage photo shoot. SUPER impressed by the thorough details of all that you shared from camera settings, the plexiglass, the props, and Light Room details. Appreciate this!
Curious what thickness of perspex you purchased and use in this and the other vids. Started doing your projects one by one. Shame I can't show you them as I do them, or anyone for that matter. Gather you don't have a site or forum to post our use of your lessons.
Gavin ! your funny ideas have reached all the way to Sweden ! The scene with the private detective behind the window is so cool ! Tried it with friends, great success ! 🙂
Gavin: Watched a number of your videos today and really enjoyed the info. One thing I believe that you do better than all other instructors is to be deliberate as you work with PS or LR to use the "Drop Down" menu items rather than speak in "keystroke". I think this is very helpful for those who are adding new skills as it is quite a bit more difficult to remember keystroke rather than the broader Menu Drop downs to find features being applied. Love your enthusiasm and your ability to articulate complex issues.....Thank you~!!
Thanks for the kind words Mark. I spent 16 years making tutorial videos for a Photoshop magazine (for their cover CD), so showing menus and not talking keystrokes is in my DNA :)
Gavin Hoey is the person who inspired me to become a photographer. His explanation is second to none and he always has that happy feeling as he speaks.
That was tight Gavin. I love your videos. Very creative. I have a small studio at home as well but my ceilings are 8 feet. That sucks.. lol Thanks for all your ideas man..
wow, thanks for the info. I just read your specs. I am about the same size actually. Not 24 feet long. I guess I shouldn't complain then. Thanks for showing me this. I see the only limitation is me. I love your work man. I've been following you for some years now. I actually only pretty much watch Adorama for your videos. I like Marks too. When you two are together, I MUST watch, ya'll are funny together. Thanks again Gavin.
Hey Gavin, how did you hang the blinds and plastic paneling from the boom arm? I imagine something as simple as zip-ties for the blinds, but what was your process?
For the blind I used some rubber coated wire that we had in the greenhouse, normally it's used for tying up plants to canes. Zip-ties would work just fine but I didn't have any to hand. The plastic "window" had two holes drilled in the corners and were hung from S shaped hooks which I think I also found in the greenhouse. The process was Brian held the blind and I attached it to the boom arm. I then raised it to the right height and off we went :)
Another top shelf tutorial! I wonder if this would work with wooden venetian blinds? They are thicker and not bendy like the these ones, so I imagine the shadows wouldn't be as sharp. Anyone tried it?
Gavin, another top draw video and post PS editing, re props, I get asked to do James Bond style portraits but not sure how to go about obtaining a prop gun, do you have any tips on where and how to obtain one. Many thanks for sharing.
I tried this out and it worked great. I had a female model that was pretending she was a femme fatale. I added a narrow table under the window that served as either a desk or a bar. It was so much fun. She did ask me if I got the idea from Gavin ( we did the gold backdrop shoot last time) and I had to confess.
Who on Earth would thumbs down this? Another great set of ideas, instruction and presentation Gavin. Thank you
Your ideas are top notch, well explained, and fabulous

Hi Sir Gavin, how do I get the Venetian setup up? What’s the frame? Is that Perspex in front of it?
This rocked! Thank you for all of the tips - as it will set me up for more tips on my next vintage photo shoot. SUPER impressed by the thorough details of all that you shared from camera settings, the plexiglass, the props, and Light Room details. Appreciate this!

Awesome photography with awesome photographer 💓
You are amazing !!!! Very nice videos
You're a small studio god Gavin!
What is the size of the plastic sheet and where can I find it?
What should be aperture and shutter speed for such shots
LOVE all Gavin's tutorials!
Another top shelf tutorial! I wonder if this would work with wooden venetian blinds? They are thicker and not bendy like the these ones, so I imagine the shadows wouldn't be as sharp. Anyone tried it?
I think the shadow sharpness would be the same but you're right, bending blinds is a huge point for this shoot :)
Fantastic video for inspiration and a ‘how to’
which microsoft surface tablet are you using....I see alot of people switching to those instead of Mac
It's the Microsoft Surface Book and I love it :) www.gavtrain.com/?os_reviews=surface-book-review
I always enjoy your videos Gavin.
As usual, a great informative video. Thanks Gavin, I'm going to try this at home!!
Love this one! Gavin is such a fun teacher!
Gavin, another top draw video and post PS editing, re props, I get asked to do James Bond style portraits but not sure how to go about obtaining a prop gun, do you have any tips on where and how to obtain one. Many thanks for sharing.
It's a toy "cap gun" and something of a family heirloom dating back to the 1980's.
Great tutorial. Thanks Gavin.
Gavin is amazing and Brian is also a very good model. He played his part so well!
thnx for once again a great idea good explained
Your make believe skills are excellent

Oh we also had a film noir jazz soundtrack playing.
Another splendid tutorial.
