Hate to say it, but as much as I love being an American and feel loyal to my home, I probably would’ve said “to hell with it” and given up if they’d put me through so much crap. Not saying I’d do anything to harm the US, but I imagine I’d have run out of emotional energy to prove myself. She did so much for our boys, giving them a taste of what they missed most about home, and got punished for it.
She was a very principled person evidently, probably to a fault, although if it wasn't for that, people wouldn't have known this story. Poor gal was just dealt a bad hand.
A great video with lots of good footage. Now for comments on the story itself: so the decision to find her guilty at any cost had probably been at least approved by President Truman. I consider this a black mark on his presidency. Also, the Nisei considered Wayne Collins to be a good man for stopping Nisei who had been pressured into renouncing their American citizenship from being deported to post-war Japan. Thank you for the upload! I have to ask, are you related to the Australian Charles Cousens of the story?
I saw on another video that Bill Kurtis and Iva Toguri were friends and that he helped her through some difficult times when she and her home were swarmed with media.
Commenting about Japanese American's living in America. Just curious, how were Japanese Americans treated in Japan? As an enemy alien in Japan, where the Japanese citizens trusting, kind and understanding? Were they allowed to just walk around and freely?
Warren - yes, someone needs to do a movie about Iva Toguri. Someone also needs to do a movie on the Japanese American experience in Hawaii which was dramatically different than the Japanese American experience on mainland US.
@theloniousm4337 More like the rest of the MSM. Walter Winchell's name seems to come up often in historical wrongs. Unfortunately he was powerful enough to ruin people in his day.
You need to read more and write less. The WWII Veterans Committee in 2006 awarded Iva with the Herlihy Citizenship award for her love of country and courage. Those guys and girls know more about love of country and courage then you could even hope to imagine knowing. I think you are Nancy Pelosi. If you need a tissue to go to your safe space with, too bad you are on your own.
"As a victim of circumstances, she was prosecuted." That's a major generalization, that woman was loyal to herself and Japan. If she had been loyal to the United States, she'd have turned down the opportunity to work for the Japanese Empire's psychological operations intelligence unit. My grandfather sacrificed everything BUT his life for this country, while fighting in the pacific. At best, this woman was a coward, and at worst a lying traitor; in both cases she chose to fight against the United States instead of doing her duty as an American citizen. Edit: as far as the media using this woman's decision not to give up her American citizenship as proof of her "loyalty," all it proofs to me is she was smart enough to hedge her bets. Edit 2: this woman's more inflammatory statements were omitted from this anti-american propaganda piece. If we could hear some of the evil crap this woman said with glee, folk would have a much different perspective. Also, if you compare the language of yesteryear to modern day language, of course it will sound sanitary. It was a completely different era. What truly shocks me is how easily people believe this propaganda piece, and that nobody wonders exactly how this woman was "captured" by the japs. Did she stop by the local radio station to make a request, and was found to be a yank? Also, she admitted to being tokio rose. Everything she said, and did is as clear as day, everything else is 'mind reading' at best.... fools. Edit 3: according to the "journalists," this woman was "found guilty because the jury wanted to go home"...what in the actual f*#k?!
You are seriously uninfomed about this. First of all, she has never considered herself to be a Japanese (or even a neutral Portugese for that matter) she considered herself American. That is her identity of her and that's about it, it's very easy for her to pledge to the Japanese Government in Japan, but she didn't and for doing that, she LOST all the right being Japanese in Japan. Second of all, the FBI have a whole year to investigate her and her program, and the FBI did not find anything she did during the whole 5 years to be "against" the United States, that is why she was released by the Army CIS and FBI custody back in 1946. She was only in trouble when she want to go back to the US. Thirdly, the case against her is build on Coercion, and the case convicted her based on 2 witness testimony (which was later found out to be coerced) and even tho DOJ have all her program transcribed, DOJ did not show the actual trasncription instead have the 2 witness testify againt her. In today's court, this is a cause for censure for the prosecutor, as this is, well, unlawful and willingly for the prosecutor to participate in a perjury. And finally, the 2 writer of the show (The Zero Hours), one American and one Australian POW both acquitted of Treason from US and Australia, so tell me how exactly the people who wrote the scrip is acquitted but the announcer of the script is convicted for treason? As for how she got to that postiion, dude, she was an "Enemy alien" in Japan (Funny when the US do the same thing to her) she was shut out for anything, and she cannot get a passport to leave Japan as State Department refused her application in 1942 (Before her boardcasting career in Japan) when you are stuck in a country and cannot go home, she did what everyone did in this situation, you get a job and survive. And as an American, the only job she can get is to transcribe stuff in English, which is how she got the job in Radio Japan in the first place and before you ask, she only get to become an announcer after one of the POW apporach her. And her intention is make a mockery of this boardcast

Eric Shinseki good on him for entering the US army being promoted to General.
It wasn't bloody fair that she was scapegoated.
@5:08 does that guy know her personally?
seems so
I saw on another video that Bill Kurtis and Iva Toguri were friends and that he helped her through some difficult times when she and her home were swarmed with media.
Hello Mr. Cousens,
Are you related to the Charles Cousens connected to this story?
Apologies for the late reply. Yes, I'm his grandson.

Shameful.
Walter Winchell was that era's version of Fox News. Her story should be made into a movie.
Spare me, people have had all they can take with postmodernist propaganda.

I would have said Fredo Cuomo or Racheal" Russian Collusion" Madcow is todays version of Winchell
That's why he died like he did for being evil Walter Winchell.
