Dragonbreaks: • The MOST Confusing Con...
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

The most dangerous school of magic... Console Commands...
Its called chim
@@yannkam2127 Which is funny considering magic is still op, they just avoid alteration.
Praise CHIM.
Learning how to make your own mods is Chim, i.e. learning that the entire universe is a fabrication by a greater being (the developers at BGS acting collectively as the Godhead). From there, either you become disillusioned with the game and stop playing (Zero-Sum) or you decide to learn how to manipulate the game's reality to suit yourself (Chim).
The modder Soolie modded Skyrim from a frozen wasteland to a tropical paradise, which is effectively the same as what happened when Tiber Septim turned the jungles of Cyrodiil into fertile plains.
@@Merilirem Hmm... don't remember traveling with many mages who don't use flesh spells.

@@Merilirem So you can manipulate reality with a few spells. Am I supposed to be impressed?
By morrowind's standard? No, it was common for people who were not dirt poor to learn one or two spells, if you have to dive a lot in your job, learn water breathing, need extra edge in battle? Learn a bit of novice destruction
@@ukkothedwarf1259 Well, apparently the entire Ayleid city later renamed Bravil could cast either waterbreathing or levitation, presumably the altmer in general have the entire population know a few spell. Skyrim in particular is very un-magical, also mer are more magical than men. Also Alteration used to have so many more spells.
@@Auriel_Direnni jump and slowfall come to mind, "the mighty valiant hero nerevarine continues his epic quest in land of morrowind, using his trade mark spell kangaroo travel to get fast from place to place"
I would say enchanting, but the thumbnail says rival the gods, not surpass them.
But only when coupled with Alchemy... unless you're the Nereverine, then Alchemy all the way
We have no metric for actual godlike capabilities in the elder scrolls except maybe Dagon from Oblivion, and we're not even supposed to engage him ourselves.

Only if you just use the setcale command and exclusivly on horses
Yup
No need to level Alteration, just roleplay a character who has achieved CHIM.

dont zero sum on us!
The gods banished him before he could finish his sentence and master the art
oh shit don't read his comment or you will................ oh don't worry guys i already alter the reality so you will not vanish
The answer is 6
Alteration might be scoffed at in Skyrim, but if you have played Morrowind, you should know better than to be that foolish. There's a reason they "outlawed" levitation in Oblivion.
That was so stupid I mean killing people is illegal but the dark brotherhood exists , stealing is illegal but the thieves guild exists , I would of liked to buy it from that shady guy outside the imperial city gate to the side
guymine123 Uh, you forgetting the part where the Penitus Occulatis trashed the sanctuary in Skyrim? Theft is illegal but burglars exist. 🤔
Engine limitations
Yalkın ÇIRAK no. It was because dungeons in Skyrim where circular and with levitation you could float to the exit and just fight the boss easily. Also cities in Skyrim and oblivion are not apart of the world space like they are in Morrowind so it makes levitation awkward.
@@32gigs96 Cities are not part of the world and the engine doesnt allow you to fly up the walls and enter the city. Therefore engine limitation
Alteration is about altering reality, while Mysticism is about understanding and manipulating the fabric reality is built on. To fully realize the potential of Alteration we also need Mysticism.
I don't think Bethesda really remembers mysticism anymore. If they do, they certainly don't care for it.
@@KonoGufo which is a shame, really.
@@FelineElaj It's matter of definition, and the definition of schools of magic is really fluid through time. It's like mysticism was torn apart to other schools, mostly to alteration.
@@filippruszak5745 this is an in-lore explanation, yes. Seems to me, it is simply used by the devs as an excuse to dumb down the magic in TES.
From the gameplay perspective, though, we can observe oversimplification of magic. Other schools took hits, as well. Mysticism is just the one that got hit the hardest.
Would the same reasoning justify even further dumbing down of magic in the series? Say, reducing the number of spells even more and lumping them in just three schools - Restoration (all buffs and healing), Destruction (damage) and Alteration (everything else). Hey, the definition of the schools is fluid. Maybe we should simolify it even further - just divide it into Restoration and Alteration. After all, it was argued previoisly, in-lore, that Destruction is just another form of Alteration. Two schools seem enough.
My point is, it's a convenient excuse. But it's not a good reason to dumb down the magic in TES. It is still a game, and this approach negatively impacts gameplay.
Edit: Also, the same in-lore reasoning could be used to explain addition of new schools of magic to the game. The Psijics practice the "old ways", for example. There are different sects and orders among the Nords, the Reachmen and the Bosmer who practice different magic. Heck, now that the Mages Guild is gone, the newly arisen magical organisations could add their own spin on the subject.
@@FelineElaj it makes sense in the context of Skyrim though, because of how the skill trees work and the balance of stealth, warrior, and mage skills.
The most powerful school of Magic… patience. Legend has it, millions of people practice the magic of patience each year by waiting for a new ElderScrolls game

Skyrim's magic could have been so much better. there's so many spells that are just stronger versions of preexisting ones. i hope es6 doesn't share the same problem.
Skyrim magic is just a sad experience overall... you can create enchanted weapons that hit for thousands of damage but even the strongest destruction spells are capped at some 150 damage. Praise mods like Apocalypse, Summermyst and Ordinator for making magic into what it should have been all along

Alteration uses magic to change reality. Mysticism uses magic to change magic.
I always imagined being in the Elder Scrolls universe, being a master of alteration and illusion. Single-handedly stopping armies by freezing arrows mid-air and reflecting it back at them. Yeah and after each lecture you learn a new spell or gain a skill level. Imagine an alchemist class where they teach you some basic recipes using common ingredients etc etc... missed opportunity.
Exactly. The "college" doesn't even feel like a college. No classes, letures, activites etc. I get it's a quest line and the focus lies somewhere else but for us roleplayers it's kinda meh.
There should be a skill tree for disruptive students.

That is odd isn't it? If the videogame character realizes they are a videogame character they become all powerful, or in other words they mess with their own programming. Problem is we know in the next ES game there will only be magicka (maybe 10 spells) in the base game and schools of magicka will be gone, replaced with a store where you can buy more spells to make your Tamriel experience more magickal. @@avgvstvs7 the fuck is chim?
@@MonstertruckBadass It's too complicated to explain simply, you'll want to look it up. It's essentially a lore term/explanation used to describe metagaming, player consciousness, and breaking the fourth wall. Chim is consciousness that the game isn't reality (see also Godhead and zero sum), and that you can alter the established rules in a manner similar to that of a lucid dreamer (as described in the lore)
I truly think necromancy is the second most powerful kind of magic in the elderscrolls. That is if you fully harness its power like mannimarco did, such as controlling entire legions of undead, mastering necromanctic energy which can come in the form of releasing pestilence and death that level the landscape and its inhabitants alike. Not to mention gaining lichdom which essentially turns you into a demigod and the list just goes on...
On the flipside, imagine mastering Illusion to the degree that you can mindfuck a Daedric or Aedric prince to make them do your bidding; or conjuration to tear open a rift in reality and build your own pocket of Oblivion within Nirn where you can make your own rules of reality and achieve power rivalling all but the most powerful Daedric lords, not saying there are unequivocally better, but ways that other magic schools can still contend.
@@Neion8 Very cool ideas, although I don't think it would be possible to control a daedric prince with illusion magic and especially not any aedra either considering they make up the very building blocks of nirn itself. But yes illusion magic is super powerful, to the point that one could have a literal army of thralls who would be in all intensive purposes mentally subdued and as a result completly under the command of they're puppet master. Although such an individual would have to be one of the most powerful illusion mages in all of Tamriel to even be able to sustain that level of control over so many minds.
Yeah but is it altering reality? Can't control an army of the dead if they suddenly turn into cheese lmao
John Manard necromancy isn't that great. Necromancers are just unskilled conjures, why have legions of corpses fight for you, if you can have legions of dremora, atronachs and all kind of daedric creatures fight for you. The only advantage necromancers have over conjures are that their spells are easier and less costly to cast.
@@zamathellama9708 Dude you do realize one of the most powerful mages in all of Tamriel's history was a necromancer and his name was Mannimarco the dreaded king of worms. He litterally ascended to godhood and became a celestial body known as the necromancer's moon which eclipses Arkay himself who is a fucking divine for God's sake. Just look up eso cinematic trailers and you'll see all the destruction Necromancy can bring to bare upon mortal kind.
I really hope Alteration will get a good overhaul and buff in the next installement. Maybe not achieving Chim, but maybe close. Being able to go Reality Stone kind of shit would be awesome. (also come on, Wards should be in alteration anyway, you're effectively creating a small space that says "nope, that's not a fireball, that's a magicka potion, thanks")
If only Bethesda cared enough to put some good alteration spells in Skyrim. I'm still mad that I didn't get those lockpick spells.
Adam Xei I have a feeling Elder Scrolls 6 will be better. Skyrim was good, but as an Elder Scrolls it was kind of a letdown. I doubt Bethesda would allow two consecutive letdowns in their cash cow.

The Ayleids used divine Dawn Era magic they preserved in time, which would largely be categorized in Alteration. From extra armor, turning iron to gold, to magic resistance, it’s just bad ass.
Now I'm wondering would the dwemer tonal magic be alteration?
Tonal architecture, be it Dwemer, The thuum, sword singing isn't magic.
Alteration, reality we know and don’t, perhaps an existential crisis is what causes you to disappear, maybe you ascend to a greater plain, logic is reality, if you can alter logic you can alter reality, perhaps we shall never know, or perhaps we shall soon see.

Matthew Caffrey I wouldn’t know, but to affect the literal heart of a god I suspect that they must be able to use it and it might’ve been a factor.

Greg Martin illusion alters your perception of logic to affect you physically while alteration is altering actual logic affecting the real world rather than the perceived world.
More like once you mess with reality too much, you crash the game and to fix itself, reality just remakes it without you...

@@Cleverhandle357 The Eye of Agamotto's primary power in the comics (as opposed to the Time Gem in the movies, which it never held) is as a tool for divination, which is folded mostly into the Illusion schools.
All spell casting is alteration.
Alteration: bending the laws of nature for a variety of magical effects.
Conjuration: bending the laws of nature to summon creatures from other planes of existence.
Destruction: bending the laws of nature to harm creatures and the environment
Illusion: bending the laws of nature to mess with people's mind and senses
Mysticism: bending the laws of nature for an assortment of different spells
Restoration: bending the laws of nature to heal or mend targets
Thaumaturgy: bending the laws of nature for some lesser known spell effects
So. If I were a mage, rather than specialise in conjuration, destruction, illusion, mysticism, restoration or thaumaturgy, I'd just pick alteration. Specialise in alteration and the rest is as easy as pie.
You are actually right the practice of magic is the manipulation of the arubis but they wanted to separate it a bit for easier study
You don't bend the laws of nature, in the elder scrolls universe magic is a law of nature.
And you have discovered the truth of the "schools" of magic: They're a load of crap. At the end of the day, it's all manipulation of Magicka. Mortals merely divide it into categories to make it easier to think about. Watch the way the Daedra use their power for an example. They don't use spells, or enchant items with a table, or mix potions with a laboratory. They merely exert their will, and the world changes to obey. Their power is formless, merely existing. The truth is a mortal mage could likely do the same, but their minds are not capable of exerting the necessary willpower without some kind of focus, such as a spell, or enchanting table.
That talk at the end about disappearing from the mortal realm game me a distinct Gensokyo feeling.

When I play as a spellsword alteration/congeration is my go to . A bound weapon of choice two dramora lords for back up and a paralyze spell on deck.
How appropriate that you showcase mods that adds spells in this episode, for mods, by their very nature, is the ultimate form of Alteration: They are not part of the game, but once installed, but from the perspective of the world inside, their contents have always been there.
