Thank you for the kind words, everyone. I'm honored to share my journey on Roy's channel, and even more so if I can be a small inspiration to older athletes that train in this powerful art. Just subs from everywhere; it's truly eye-opening how many techniques are drilled into Roy Dean Sensei's students. Seriously: most BJJ schools don't expect their blue belts to be able to comfortably show, say, even twenty or so moves; you showed I don't know: 60? 80? Point is that even on a compliant Uke, the sheer VOLUME of techniques on display was awe inspiring- and if you think that's normal I can tell you that it's NOT. A Roy Dean "blue belt'" is a purple belt anywhere else- and it stems from the fact that Dean Sensei has VERY high standards and is obviously supremely focused on maintaining a level of excellence that is unmatched. Credit to him for sure AND and to you for sticking with it. As a (high school History) teacher I can tell that literally every student who reaches purple under his can almost automatically "teach" grappling; some better than others- sure- but still EVERYONE having a baseline of ability simply because of Dean Sensei's clear and obvious focus on technique over strength- all day every day. Also, as a Judoka (not a good one mind you- but Judo is my first love and always will be) I LOVE how you demonstrated Judo techniques (like Uchimata and Koshi Guruma) effortlessly. I would imagine- and hope- that you teach your students Judo throws (including "wrestling" throws like Morote Gari [blast double] and Kuchiki Taoshi [single leg], which Judo has inside it but which- thanks to the moronic IJF/Olympic ruleset are all but forgotten). So yeah, PLEASE keep Judo alive; it's dying on the vine in the USA and that is a truly horrendous state of affairs. Most American just focus on wrestling- but there's another art which is 100X deeper and is well worth the effort to learn it- something maybe 1% of all BJJ people HERE IN THE US actually bother to do. It's beyond sad. As I have alluded to on other Rick Ellis videos (yes, I'm a fan boy!): dude I am 54, started all this 5 years ago, am NOT "good" at anything but am trying to improve and know full well what it's like to have a 22-year-old blue belt Energizer Bunny just keep relentlessly attacking and attacking and attacking and it's times like these whereupon you have to call upon your knowledge base in order to outwit the kid because you ain't outspeeding him if you get my drift (at least not until that "moment" when all of a sudden the old guy becomes the mongoose; but we 50+ guys really have to pick our spots for any and all "speed" attacks). Anyway, point is that I am basically just like you, only minus the years in, talent, physical capability, dexterity, adaptability, mindset, mental capacity and belief; other than that we're pretty much the same. There are two keys: The knee, and blocking their head, pinning them, so they can't readjust their position. Yes, technically it's in the "wrong" direction. However, often the outside arm is being controlled by the opponent, so even if you rotate to get free, if they can keep adjusting their position it's very hard to open the legs. you're such an inspiration, I'm a white belt for close to a year now, and there were times when i thought i was progressing but some tough roll happened and i felt like i was back at square one, it was more than anything..mentally defeating. But watching this, made me realized..my journey is yet too short for me to feel disheartened too early and that I have not given my all yet in this art to actually see the result that I wanted. Thanks for your sharing..this is what I needed right now!
Roy Dean student for sure. Precision, timing, technique, flow, and exceptional teaching ability. Big fan of Roy Dean and big fan of you Rick Ellis. Thinking about getting back to training after a long layoff and 49 years of aging. Your words are encouraging. I miss the mats, the people that I meet, and the lessons that I learn there. Cheers!
I'm one of those older athletes, a few weeks off my 59th birthday. A white belt, currently injured with a torn groin. Your movie has helped me stay in touch with why I'm doing this. Thanks for the inspiration, and congratulations.
Congratulations Professor! You’re an inspiration. I’m 50 yo and I’ve been training for 5years now. Currently a blue belt, watching your journey gives me hope. Osss!
I have to say I've watched this twice and it blows me away every time. I love your dedication and heart. It also inspires me so much. I'll be 50 soon and really close to making purple belt and I really love the fact that as I get older I can still excell in this martial art into my 50s. You are an inspiration to us middle aged men. Many blessings.
This has inspired me even more to continue my BJJ journey. I'm 48, disabled combat veteran, and the oldest white belt at my school. I have lower back and neck injuries with almost no flexibility. I'm in pain everyday but love every minute training BJJ.
This man has a vast knowledge of submissions and he moves so good despite saying he was “declining”, amazing to see this. Hope this man rolls on for a long time🙏🏻
Congratulations Rick!. You are a great ambassador to the Art of Jiu Jitsu! We need more with your type of outlook and mindset. I still remember you going out of your way to be my uke for my blue belt demo, and being a very gracious host. I'll never forget. Im very happy for you. Enjoy the new beginning.
I’m 44, just ticked over one year training (insert the bit here where I wish I’d began years earlier) This is probably my favourite BJJ video ever. Congratulations Rick. This just got right into my heart. You’re an inspiration to all BJJ players but especially the older ones. May you enjoy many more years on the mats. Just awesome 👍
This is such an incredibly inspiring film and journey. As someone who discovered BJJ in my 40's, I can totally appreciate the challenges that come with training at an advanced age. I respect your determination and drive to persevere. It has motivated me to get back onto the mat. I miss the brotherhood that is an inherent part of BJJ. My wife is Brasiliera and we were married in Rio in 2018. While packing for my wedding, I took my gi on the off chance that I would have a few hours to train. While attending a BBQ at my sister in laws, I saw a guy pull into the parking lot and walk toward his home. From 100 feet away, I recognized the build, the walk, the fingers and ears of a BJJ brother. I approached him, introduced myself and within moments we had identified mutual friends. He invited me to train the next night and we have been great friends ever since. That is the power of BJJ. Thank you for sharing your experience and for igniting the flame in me. Muito parabens pelo faixa preta irmao!!!
That was simply, incredible. As a newbie white white white belt training under a 6 degree black belt and 50+, this was amazing! I'd be happy just getting a blue belt some day. What a great film. Thank you!
Rick, you're a huge inspiration. Some days I feel like leaving my belt on the mat for good. But its videos like these that keep me going. It's hard being an older brown belt.
My friend, congratulations on your belt and on a very inspirational video, I meet this arte 33 years ago when in Rio we had about 1600 registered under de FJJRJ, and today be able to see how far we came and the life’s this art transformed, it brings me joy and tears. Jiu-jítsu life stile!

From Judo to Muay Thai to Jiu Jitsu Rick Ellis you are a true martial artist. I have watched your journey 4 times thus far, i saw the passion, heart, humbleness, respect and love that you pour into this Art...and at the 33.56 mark of this video I saw you holding back a tear. Well deserved congratulations Rick Ellis
Watching this demo in person was awesome! Seeing the video and how Rick tells his story is unbelievable. I’ve watched this several times now and can continue to see it with new eyes every time. Pure Rolling? This is Pure Inspiration!
Professor Dean, Your best demo in my opinion. This man is insanely technical. Also, thank you for the behind the scene glimpse of you off the mat with your student. They love and appreciate you, and will go to war at a moment’s notice.
Great stuff Roy. Recently finished Becoming the Black Belt, and I totally agree with your thoughts on producing really high quality material in comparison to a lot of the garbage filmed in a basement with shaky cam. Great to see you're putting better stuff out every time!
I am 55Yrs old and just started my journey about 3 weeks in. I wish started a lot sooner. You inspire me to continue. I do not have any more excuses, and I am loving it. I just hope my body can sustain the training. TY for sharing.
The most real and relatable Bjj video I’ve seen. Watching you demo with that music brought a lump to my throat. Been a blue belt for just over 18 months now and your right, each year it just changes me for the better. Congrats man, an honour to watch.👊🏻
Professor Eillis thank u for old man jiu-jitsu. And Congrats receiving your black belt. Absolute inspiration! I'm 56yrs I will be 57 this Tuesday. God will one day I'll be were you are. My professor said one day good training old man, and yesterday said the same. All I heard was old man. It's kinda messing with me a bit. I guess he meant nothing by it. I maybe the only older person there. 50's + lol. Thanks for reading this.
I know this comment is 4 years late, but this video brought tears to my eyes. Absolutely amazing, watching Rick's progression. His transitions in the demo were so smooth. 14 years ago, i decided to try BJJ, however work and family schedules didn't jive and I stopped after about 6 months. I started up again at the ending of 2022 at the ripe age of 46 lol. Now at 48 as a blue belt, I can definitely feel the difficulties related to my age, but as late as I am to this journey, I'm sticking with it. This video is an inspiration to me, in that my age will not hinder me.
Beautiful film. Excellent demo. Amazing fluidity. You are like water. Well done and well deserved old man. 45 year old blue belt loving every minute of the journey.

you're such an inspiration, I'm a white belt for close to a year now, and there were times when i thought i was progressing but some tough roll happened and i felt like i was back at square one, it was more than anything..mentally defeating.
Cheers!
Thank you for the kind words, and good luck on your bjj journey, Jake!
45yr old, 4 stripe white belt. This is so inspiring. Thank you.
I'm one of those older athletes, a few weeks off my 59th birthday. A white belt, currently injured with a torn groin. Your movie has helped me stay in touch with why I'm doing this. Thanks for the inspiration, and congratulations.
I'm a 55 year old blue belt. This is inspiring. Thank you for sharing your black belt journey.
So do I 👊👍
Congratulations Professor!
Im from Brasil, just want to say that your movies inspire me so much. Just beautiful, congrats Rick!

This man has a vast knowledge of submissions and he moves so good despite saying he was “declining”, amazing to see this.
Hope this man rolls on for a long time🙏🏻
His kata was a thing of beauty
Congratulations Rick!. You are a great ambassador to the Art of Jiu Jitsu! We need more with your type of outlook and mindset. I still remember you going out of your way to be my uke for my blue belt demo, and being a very gracious host. I'll never forget. Im very happy for you. Enjoy the new beginning.
Thank you, Jeff! You should ping me so we can reconnect. I'd love to know what you've been up to.
Tremendous video. I'm a 62 year old white belt, and this was such an inspiration. It's about the journey. Thanks.
This was an awesome video.. Thank You.. Thank you.. I just started my Jiu Jitsu journey and I am 54 years of age.. 2 months in!
I found myself screaming into the screen for Rick... Inspirational for us older bjj guys... Congrats Prof Rick!
I legitimately teared up. I’m getting back on the mats because of this! 😭
Did you get back on the mats?
My friend, congratulations on your belt and on a very inspirational video, I meet this arte 33 years ago when in Rio we had about 1600 registered under de FJJRJ, and today be able to see how far we came and the life’s this art transformed, it brings me joy and tears. Jiu-jítsu life stile!
I am a Shodan in Karate, Karate is "home" for me . BUT I see the Beauty, Function, and Practicality in MANY other martial arts. From Judo to Muay Thai to Jiu Jitsu
Rick Ellis you are a true martial artist.
Back at you, Chris. Guys... go watch Chris Mikuta's brown belt demo. Absolutely, stunningly mind blowing.
Professor Dean,
Your best demo in my opinion. This man is insanely technical. Also, thank you for the behind the scene glimpse of you off the mat with your student. They love and appreciate you, and will go to war at a moment’s notice.
Your son is an amazing young man to go through the demo with you with such professionalism
This is without a doubt the very essence of what Jiu-Jitsu is suppose to be....watching this made me so grateful to be a part of this ...
The most real and relatable Bjj video I’ve seen. Watching you demo with that music brought a lump to my throat. Been a blue belt for just over 18 months now and your right, each year it just changes me for the better. Congrats man, an honour to watch.👊🏻
Jiu Jitsu is the art of folding clothes while people are still in them
Forced yoga.....
LOL
😂😂😂
Big Congrats, Rick. Your Jiu Jitsu is as eloquent as your words. I remain a huge fan.
Sir, a deep bow of respect to you and congratulations 🙏🏻
PS, I just turned 60 and have no intention on stopping 🤙🏻
Thank you, and congratulations!
Congrats Rick.
This promotion is on the top of my best list.
Professor Roy another great Demo , and another great Black Belt you have created .🙏🙏🙏
Dealing with a knee injury that has me missing class. This was the inspiration I needed. Thanks!
Big congrats. I started a couple of months ago at 52. Broke a toe flow rolling a couple of days ago. This stuff isn't easy.
Technique > strength
Congratulations Rick, i am 54 and just started several months ago, it is very inspiring to see you enjoying the sport... thank you for beeing,
So beautifully produced! That roll for the kata portion was just magical...I haven't seen a demo performed in that fashion before, just incredible.
Please, never stop making these videos. They're so inspirational, and reaffirm's my determination on completing my BJJ journey.
These series are absolutely awesome. The old man is tough. Greetings from Brazil. Congrats to Rick.
Beautiful film. Excellent demo. Amazing fluidity. You are like water. Well done and well deserved old man. 45 year old blue belt loving every minute of the journey.
I am 64 years old and this film gave me joy to watch and felt inspired . Well done. Admired your courage, persistence and clean techniques .
Great story. Thanks for sharing Rick. I’ve been struggling with some injuries as a mid 50’s purple belt and your story was inspirational. I wish you the best. Old man Jiu Jitsu!
I have started my journey in jiu jitsu about a year ago and you are such a inspiration! I am thirty years old and your legacy motivates me a lot! Second time watching it! Greetings from Brazil!
Roy Dean really does practice in the"Gentle Art". He never trys to put it to anyone. He always let's them end with a win. I love it!
I used to think "testing" for a belt was for McDojos but these videos (the demos) from the Roy Dean clan have changed my perspective on things. What a beautiful show of capability and heart. The videography was also captivating. Drew me in and made me feel as if I was there. I was rooting for your the entire way. Very inspiring. Beautiful art (BJJ, video, storytelling) From a 48 year old blue belt that got onto the mats to support my sons dreams. Now I have my own goals. Thank you for the inspiration.
´m a jiu-jitsu (japanese) student (3rd degree black belt) from germany. i like the traditional ceremony at the end of the belt promotion. it makes it very special and great. Roy Dean, keep up the good work, you have very good students!
This is superb! Thank you for taking the time to make the film!
Been doing bjj since 2016. As I aged into 40s, with injuries taking longer to recover, I thought that may be it's time to retire. After watching your videos, I called my instructor that I want to be back on the mat... Because of people like you, we find the strength to keep going, keep training and keep fighting until the end.
Rick I'm not in Jiu Jitsu, but I love watching your training. I'm very pleased you got your black belt. There is hope for us old guys still.
As a guy getting up there in age in Judo I really appreciate this video especially what you said about how your body is declining but doing it until the wheels fall off. Congratulations on your promotion and thank you for sharing your journey.
I’m always impressed with Roy’s students. Their technique is always crisp and they all fight very hard.
Very inspiring, thanks for taking the time to make and share your video.
I put off on watching this one until I could get to my tv at home and it slipped my mind. I always check your channel to see if any new videos and I kept putting this one off. Finally got around to watching it and I'm glad I did. the rolls were amazing. This man has heart, and his dedication to the art shows! We always here things like big/older guys have no flow but you shot that statement down real quick. I'll be nearing my 40's when I make it to black belt, hopefully I can be as good as this guy when its all done!
Mr Ellis. you are an inspiration for sure, that was the best demo I have ever watched on this channel. no offense to anyone, there were so many elements of your demo I would love to learn. I my self just turned 40 and just received my first white stripe on my white belt 1.5 years into my journey. Listening to you talk about everything before seeing your demo speaks volumes to me and I appreciate everything you said maybe more than the demo. Your words and knowing about you, made the demo 10000% more special to watch and share that with anyone who was there or watching it on youtube. Thank you very much for sharing and ill be heading over to your channel very soon. I wish you the best and I hope your blessed with many more years on your journey discovering who you are. thanks for helping me to discover more about myself. Sensei Dean arigato gozaimous for this video. matte ne …….
I'm honestly so choked up after watching this I'm at a loss for words. Congratulations Rick Ellis!
Rick, you're an inspiration to me brother. I just started in January, I'm 47 yrs old and I'm going to keep going until my wheels fall off. Great job, bro!
Wow! 57 yr old brown belt in Ottawa, Canada. That was inspiring! Awsome demo and congrats on the BB. Sitting here during the Coronavirus lockdown and haven't rolled in a month, DYING to get back on the mats. Cheers....
I needed a pick me up with my injuried elbow but seeing you overcome so much and your skill level was just inspiring. Thank you
Congrats Rick. I remember watching your white to blue about 9 yrs ago when i had just started. Youve come so far! Very, very inspiring!
Tech demo was such a smooth stuff. And the production quality of these vids is awesome. Great job all!
I am so impressed. I started at 52. My kids do it. When I saw you maneuver you have perfect technique and the moves are so "traditional". This is what I aspire to. Nit that 10th planet mma stuff. This is jiu jitsu.
This was such a great black belt demo. Great job everyone involved in the making of this. Great job Rick! Outstanding skill.
Wonderful milestone in the never ending journey. Congratulations for never quitting.
That demo was pure joy to watch.
Wow!! Awesome demo!!! That was great! Coach looks awesome as a person too! Great show on respect through the movie, i really enjoyed it. Inspirationnal man, really good. My coach hinted me i was passing in a near future, he sent me this to show me what he would like. This set the bar very high my man, very high, and i hope i will put on a display at this level. Thank you for sharing this!
Nursing a torn ACL on a quiet Friday night, thank you Professor Dean and Rick for a great video. I come back to this time to time. I just love Rick's graceful flow of chained techniques.
Sir, I'm 45 and inspired by this video. Been training Japanese Jujutsu for 3 years and loving every painful minute of it. Lol. Watching you and the joy with which you train and endured this belt test gave me fuel for 3 more years, easily. Congratulations. "Until the wheels fall off..."
Beautiful story of your journey Rick. Thank you for showing young people that older guys can still be productive.
I'm a blue belt for over two years at Kron Gracie. We just started doing testing again and it still blows me away how high up the mountain people are. Feel like I know nothing hahah. Inspiring and congrats.
Beautiful Brutal Bjj Brotherhood! Multiplied Blessings & Many Thanks for Inviting Us Into Your Journey.
This is the essence of our craft. Much love and respect to you, Rick, from Trinidad and Tobago! Oss
I'm just starting out. White belt and have been doing BJJ for about a month. This video is so inspirational. Just hard to imagine remembering all those moves. WOW!!
Congratulations Rick, as a 55 yr old brown belt, I know what it takes. That was a beautiful test.
Rick,
That was unbelievable to watch. It was beautiful and very inspirational. Totally amazing.
Well done.
That’s what you call a “Plethora” of submissions! I’m new to BJJ after accomplishing a 4th degree black belt in American Kenpo under Bill Packer. Mr Ellis and his videos are inspiring and insightful for me as a near 40 year old beginner in BJJ. Truly a blessing to have a place to come watch videos and get some knowledge and motivation from someone of his caliber. OSS!
When you bleed for the sport you love, it becomes a part of your soul. Congrats on your journey my brother.
Thank you Rick Ellis for the love and encouragement to us older bjj practitioners. Good work man
Such a tremendous display of technique and perseverance. Truly inspirational! Will be watching this over and over.
Beautiful artistry was demonstrated here.
Rick I follow you ! You’re an inspiration for me and I enjoyed your journey ! I’m a 2nd stripe white belt and I’m 53! So, watching and following your channel I have learned a lot ! Please keep it going as I look forward for more videos ! TYVM
Unbelievable journey, as a blue belt now you've inspired me! Congratulations sir.
That Kata... poetry in motion. Beautiful.
That pass at 32:00 from Kesa Gatami to side control after securing Rick's arm was beautiful in its simplicity.
The knee-reaping heelhook in the gi around the 15 min mark made my heart happy. :)
This just might be one of the most inspirational films I’ve ever watched... I’m just beginning my journey in jiu jitzu... but to make it to that level one day
