I agree. there is no reason to bash this guy for giving extra details and taking the time to explain why. Pay attention to detail otherwise you are destined for a fuck up. The smallest and most insignificant details in life can have the most catastrophic effects. Excellent video. Very refreshing to find someone willing to take the time to give an in-depth demonstration rather than listening to 10 minutes of dub step music and trying to figure out what they're doing through a bad camera angle.👍👍👍👍
10 years later, as I am typing the comment. The tutorial was still helpful and straight to the point. I was able to fix my motherboard; and get my PC back up and running!
You’re a life saver. I got a second 8gb ram stick, tried to boot with a dimms set up, no boot. Tried to go back and test each individual ram stick, no boot. Tried running both in simms no boot. Popped the cmos battery out, rebooted and dimms worked great.
Thank you hot stuff! I'm an old woman still trying to deal with all this technology and you have made it easier to learn! You speak plain and your soooooo easy on the eyes!! Thank you!
I'm not sure why everyone is flaming this video saying "Get to the point" but for one I liked that you explained "WHY" you might need to clear the CMOS. Other tutorials on the internet explained the "how-to" but haven't explained the why. Johnny ignore the impatient individuals who can't seem to have an attention span for more than 12 minutes.
+Johnny Phung (johnnythegeek) I too appreciate the tutorial as it partially described the problem that I had with my my rig, will try to do reset asap. Thanks man.
I had just Overclocked my PC for the very first time (i5 3570K). I thought it wouldn't be a problem because I have a K in my cpu name. I accept the changes in efi and reset PC. BAAAAAM in all of a sudden my PC won't even power on longer then 2 seconds. I tried like 10 times, i almost went full berserk / panic state. I stumble across this video 10minutes later. I get my nerves togheter, open my case for the very first time. I manage to find this CMOS thingy and do exactly as Mister Johnny Phung tells me to do... 30 seconds later i start my PC and it works... Thank you Mister Johnny Phung!!!! THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!
I would just like to take a moment to thank you for your clear and concise video regarding clearing the CMOS on a motherboard. I just recently resurrected a Dell Optiflex 320 mini desktop computer from almost certain death thanks to your video. Tell your detractors to piss off! Your video was A-1! It solved my problem. By the way I have never in my life performed this procedure and your video literally made the process a lot less daunting and challenging. Thank you again.
Keep in mind you dont want to leave the jumper in place for more than a few seconds. Usually a flat screw driver works easily and gets the job done. Now in rare cases where you think the mobo is dead and you tried to reset it a few times to no avail, then instead of losing your mind and buying a new board, put the jumper on and leave it in place for a good 30 seconds to one minute! Sometimes after overclocking its stubborn and you fear you bricked the board try that first, if that don't bring it back use a flat screwdriver and jolt it by making several fast contacts. That method actually saved an Asus board for me once and brought it back to life! Well when all the conventional methods have failed thats when you turn to the unconventional methods I have described here.....good luck!
Hey i have problem i instaled wrong bios and now i got black screen, i have 3 pins , jumper is on 2nd and 3rd. So if i want to reset it i put it on 1st ane 2nd? Yes? And do i need to turn on pc when its places on 1st and 2nd ? And then when i turn pc off, i put them back on 2nd and 3rd?
@milosivanovic6238 your fucked. That's something probably only the manufacturer can fix. This won't reset anything such as the ROM that your talking about. It will clear the settings back to default for example if you set your cpu to 7.9ghz in BIOS and need to clear that bCk to default
You have done very well in your explanation. I thought I had a dead MOBO. I watched several RUclips DIY fixes but none mentioned the CMOS clearing jumper available on most newer boards. I was about to replace my board when I watched your demo and decided to try it. Well it fixed the problem instantly. Thankyou!
Tbh I was watching this and messing around with my ps because it wouldn’t boot into windows and I was unplugging things and working this around and said yolo and turned it on and it worked thank you far this video man!
Johnny! I loved your presentation. When I began watching, like most I though hmm....where is he taking me, but it was one of those "wait...for...it.." moments. Very informative. You have your IT Pros that know why they are doing what they do, and you have your IT Pros that cannot explain why they do the things they do, but know it's done that way. Thanks Johnny! Glad I watched your video.
Out of all the videos that I watched trying to figure out how to reset the BIOS settings, this video was by far the most helpful to me. I really appreciated the explanation regarding why you might need to reset it. Thank you.
i REALLY REALLY LEARN WHAT I NEED AT THIS VERY MOMENT, I JUST BUILD A PC FOR MY NEPHEW AND I CHANGED THE CPU SO, THE PC DIDNT BOOT AT ALL! AND A FRIEND OF MINE TOLD ME TO RESET THE MOBO, AND THIS VID ACTUALLY SHOW ME HOW TO DO IT RIGHT! THX A LOOOOT MAN! JUST SUB AND LIKE AND SHARE!
Awesome video on resetting the BIOS..........manually! Been looking for something like this for a while now. Something that explains it succinctly but with just the right amount of detail, plus it can be applied to just about any motherboard. Love ya work ;) Thank you!
Excellently explained Jhonny. Great work I got a no display problem and when I searched on RUclips your video showed up and it helped me a lot. Thanks for creating a video on explaining about clearing the CMOS. Keep Going 👏🏻👏🏻
Dude! You just saved me!!!!! I was on it the whole afternoon. Checking if the power supply was the problem, changing cables, nodging the screwdriver on the pins. Went over tons of forum articles and videos. Then I finally got to this video. Luckily I had an extra jumper. Thank youuuu! I was laugh-crying upon the sight of my BIOS. 😭😂😂🤣🤣🤣😭😭😂😂 God bless you, man! God bless you!
You literally just saved my new PC! I changed something in Bios, Windows came up with a sad face closed down and would not restart. I couldn't even get the bios to come back up to change it back. I am still having windows issues, but at least the computer is coming back up! Nothing was scarier than that big black screen and no keyboard input meant a thing! Switchingbthe jumper and resetting it did the trick! Thank you again!!
Very good video! Thanks for not just showing how to do it, but to explain WHY people should do it (if needed). Hopefully you have a career that is utilizing your knowledge!
+Steven Mack I've just installed a new graphics card and it is makin my PC unresponsive to the monitor unless taken out and run the through the motherboard. Do you think CMOS would be causing my issue or is it just my shit system? any help would be appreciated.
Keep in mind I've already tried cleaning my Ram sticks and unplugging my PC and holding the power button for three minutes or so. I'm running out of ideas and I lost my PCs motherboard info.
I am taking my 220-801 in two days and this was the most consice video I have seen and I have been studying for MONTHS so kudos my friend. You should teach a class! Hopefully I can find more of your videos if they exist and if they don't they should! Thanks
My goodness, thank you so much. You literally saved my life, I was so scared that I ruined my computer when I overclocked my computer too much but you taught me how to reset the bios. Definitely a sub even tho ur not posting anymore
It works for me 100% my computer was not displaying but after I follow your steps it displays and I load defaults thank you very much first think my computer was spoiled but now I got it back I appreciate your hard work
Hi!! This worked for me on an ASUS motherboard (2015), I Unplugged the power cord, tthe jumper was already there , it has 3 pins, I moved it to the right (one position to the right) removed the CMOS battery, then plugged the power cord again , I did hold the power button for 30 seconds, the PC did nothing as you said it would happen , then moved the jumper back to where it was , placed the battery back. I repeated this process twice and it worked( it didn't work at first ), thank you for the video !! 🔥🏆👍
Johnny Phung what do I do if I need to change the boot sequence from the system menu (I got there by pressing f2 at boot up) so I can boot it up after installing windows 10
Garrett Camper change it to the hard drive to boot first. also make sure the hard drive priorities is set to your main hard drive that you want to boot.
Hi Man, its 2020 and i pulled out my old Pc and man it worked. I couldnt use my Keyboard in the F1 and F2 settings so I found your Video. Im so grateful :) i hope others will find your video and stop searching for these tutorials. Keep on mate
An old upload that is super relevant to my issues today. I am actually learning PC building and gaming as a new hobby and have obtained used untested mobo's. Many I've lucked out on and they have booted and work great. Some are just wrecks with severely bent cpu socket pins, some were finicky in what type of ram makes them happy etc. I have a problem Asrock Z390M Pro4 that fires up but no display. Took the CMOS battery out, swapped it out with another and nothing. The board has only 2 pins for the clr-bios. Can a small screwdriver be used in place of the jumper cap, because I don't have one of those. As a neewb I wasn't sure how to actually use the re-set pins until watching this video. Thank you for sharing and explaining in detail these valuable instructions.
Thank you so much. I've had a dream to build a pc for a little over a year now. It wasn't until this Christmas that I was able to get all the parts (A $500+ Gaming Pc following a guide from scattervolt). I just built the pc and after a couple of weeks I got some bluescreens of death and after trying to fix them my pc would turn on but my monitor wouldnt get signal. I though I ruined everything. This video saved me. My motherboard didn't come with a jumper but I was able to use a screwdriver. Thank you so much you saved me. (PS: After 8 years this video still works)
My PC is getting power too, but when I plug my monitor up, my monitor just says going to sleep. Someone from Reddit recommended that I clear the CMOS so I’m watching this to learn what to do. This comment gave me hope, I’m going to try it out.
hi johnny thanks a million mate after watching this youtube video i managed to fix my friend's computers 2 weeks old issue.he left pc turned off for a month & when he turn on his pc system will not boot but instead bsod 0xc0000225, replaced cmos battery set time and date and job done thanks tony
Acer Veriton, would not power on, power light and fans with limited power would switch on and off. I checked everything... and also removed the CMOS battery but all unsuccessful. So I finally tried the CMOS clear jumper and it worked. Thanks for the video and explanation.
Will resetting the bios affect a system that's been set up for a dual boot? Where c drive is a solid state used for OS, drivers, and system files, and D as a hard drive for everything else.
It will more than likely effect the boot order depending on which SATA port you have the drives plugged into. So for example if the "D" drive is plugged into SATA port 1 and the SSD is plugged into SATA port 2, after you reset the bios, the "D" drive may become the primary boot device because it is port 1. But since it does not have an OS the next drive to boot is whatever is plugged into SATA port 2 and that will be the SSD. But some motherboards may not boot the next drive in order and you will get nothing to boot. It will not effect any part of the system partition or the files that is on both drives. That's more than you needed to know but I hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
Mattuiop Do you have two OS's? Because it sounds like you just have two hard drives...which is not "Dual Boot". In any event, if you really do have a dual boot system, all that boot information for multiple OS's is stored on the HDD... not in the BIOS.
After clearing CMOS, you don't hafta install windows again. Clearing CMOS just puts the computer back the way it was when it was new, sorta. For me, on my Dell, ASUS and Gigabyte motherboards, it's often been a real lifesaver, when nothing else would really fix it. It's usually easy to do, the hardest part for me is getting that easy access inside the case and seeing what I'm doing, then locating the pins or the button. Just be sure to read/download the motherboard manual to make sure how find the button and to do it properly. On some motherboards, you *must remove the power completely* before doing this procedure. Most newer power supplies have a power switch on them to do this. Or just unplug it. After removing the power, I like to hold in the case's power button for a few seconds to completely drain the power supply too.
I have a gigabyte f2a78m-d3h but I cant get into bios, I just get a black screen with a mouse cursor and nothing else.. I havent installed an OS yet. Ive tried reseting the cmos by unplugging the battery for 1 minute and by shorting the pins but its still the same.. any suggestions?
Great video! my computer went black with the number 99 in the bottom right corner. I started researching on another computer and ended up here, which solved my problem. I thought my computer was totally dead and out. I guess i learned something really important and basic about computers today. Thank you very much.
Is clearing the cmos helpful in the kind of situation when you assembly a new PC and it doesn't even turn on and there's no led in your motherboard as the PC won't turn on? ( With every cables connected) ? And what does he mean by "Boot" .. It means turn on with the power? Or boot system with only / BIOS ?
No led blinking in the motherboard indicates problem in the psu or some wrong connection you may have accidently made (considering you pointed out that you assembled a new pc )
You have to reset the ram. Take off the ram, turn on the pc, let it 3 seconds. Probabily you will hear some beeps, turn off the pc, put the ram back and turn it on. Is Better if you put the stick ram one by one.
Taking out the CMOS battery itself will reset all personal settings stored in the BIOS as well as the time/date ect... Lets say you have an admin/bios password that you set, this a password that you're prompted for immediately after POST, this password prevents you/someone from being able to get into the BIOS before the PC even fully starts up. And lets say you forgot this password, you'd only need to clear CMOS with the jumper to do this. Get it? You'd only remove the battery if it actually needed to be replaced, or you really wanted to clear all personal settings. However removing the CMOS battery will also clear the BIOS password as well. That battery can remove anything associated with BIOS if you take it out, everything will default.
My graphics card wasn't displaying anything to my monitor so had to use mobo graphics. Found your video and lo and behold, it worked. I have no idea what happened or why it happened. Thanks for your help. Cheers
Love the extra info. Am contending with a laptop motherboard (asus f83fc). Listening to you talk helped me to have logical approaches to my situation. Please carry on.
So I just built a new PC and I tried to run the BIOS. but it won't work. The fans are running and so are the motherboard lights, but it wont enter BIOS and my monitor show "HDMI1 NO SIGNAL" Do you know what might be wrong? Any and all help is appreciated. I am running: i7 5820K, MSI X99A Sli Plus, MSI R9 390, G. Skill TridentZ DDR4 (4x8gb), Corsair H100I GTX, EVGA 750G1.
+minecraftace123 I had the same issue with my first motherboard (or at least I thought it was a motherboard issue) and sent it back and bought a different model. The pc was working fine for two weeks and is now doing the exact same thing again. So confusing. If you find a solution I would love to know.
Been having probs with terrible lag using this POS Windows 10, so went to MS forum. ONE MS moderater initially gave the usual blurb - repeating stuff most anyone would know if they'd used a computer for 20 years, or 2, and of course, we'd all tried that stuff and it didn't work. Then, someone said, "Disable Superfetch" ... and tadah! Memory use of 95% dropped drastically! It worked, and frankly, anything that is described as useful because it "maintains computer use over time" ??? ...everyone in the forum goes and disables superfetch. We're all happy. THEN some guy says "restart BIOS" and the only other MS response, this time from a "support engineer" gave the guy a huge pat on the back, and thus ended that thread. I was furious. MS staffers rarely give decent answers, they are just using macros! Most of the info comes from the Users helping each other out, but now I have to ask ........... what was superfetch REALLY? And did we truly NOT need it? Also, what does "restarting BIOS" even do since I think he may have actually meant "reset" ... but .. well, it made no sense! Does it to you?
Best MS support comes from non-MS contributors, just techy random guys that share their knowledge and patience. Most of the times I've found solutions in other forums and YT, not MS.
I can't thank you enough!!! After and watching so many videos, I found you! I didn't see anyone who actually showed the closeup details. Now, that the procedure is clear,
***** Thanks for posting the video Johnny, and Johnny, I most definitely had to give you a thumbs up, man, I swear, the way you presented this video, I little baby could understand it, you are a VERY good teacher dude. Have a great day, oh, by the way, my name is Melvin.
Carson Rowland this is great piece but what Johnny presented too works for most mother boards , In most cases most mother board cmos settings may be cleared using the jumpers settings approach ...Best regards ..to all a great piece out there
Hey you do a very good educational video. You solved my problem. Great way to show all the detail. You have a good future in this industry, both in computers and helping people solve their PC issues at home. Keep up the good work.
when I did my video on bios chip replacement I could not find videos like yours and my main rig was down with a corrupted bios. thanks so much for your efforts. now I know the why of bios.
MAN!!!! I LOVE YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I was on the verge of buying a new motherboard bcoz i thought its the only solution but that small little jumper thing cause all of the problem. Luckly when I removed it booted up. Thank you very much for this very useful information about the jumper you deserve many Subssss broooo.Thank you again. God Bless you man :) :) :)
Tech Geek Thanks but I just went somewhere else. And FYI when you use the age old "I'd like to see yours" argument it makes you sound like you're about 12. This is legitimate criticism.
GrandTheftEx Personally and I think this goes for many other people as well with loads of videos I have watched on how to reset it, they show how but none have explained why you might need to
2 minutes? It can be done in 2 seconds. "Hit this button and bam!" Although I guess you do have to explain why you'd need the bios update so you could need a few more seconds to do the explaining.
Definitely refer to the motherboard manual before placing the jumper. I tried to boot my system from the onboard video and it didn’t work because I had a GPU previously installed. So I figured I had to reset my bios. My manual for my board said to NOT power on the motherboard with the jumper in place because it would ruin my board, so just a heads up.
In the case I may have overlooked what you stated... bad or low cmos battery will not prevent a board from coming on. It will however prevent saving the settings in the bios.
My pc been working fine for about 6 months. For some reason, it got stuck in bios and I couldn’t get it to boot windows 10. I fixed it the first 2 times, but those settings are still in place and my pc getting stuck in bios, can someone please help. My motherboard is: MSI B250M
That "nothing" that it does is helpful thank you, I had no idea! I knew that this was possible which is what got me to land on your video thanks for the video and the help of a tip, that I wasn't aware.! Good job!
Hmm, manuals say that you DON'T try to push the powerbutton when the jumper is on the clear setting, You have to unhook all power and the jumper basically short circuit the battery for a few seconds so the bios chip loses is data what's been keeping stored by the psu and battery, that's why if you remove the battery with the psu still connected and plugged in the wall outlet it wont lose the settings because of the 5vsb line that's always giving power to the mouse for example
Jumper settings start at 4:08
Yep, to many talk.
hero
Thank you
Thanks

This video saved me. My motherboard didn't come with a jumper but I was able to use a screwdriver. Thank you so much you saved me.
(PS: After 8 years this video still works)
My PC is getting power too, but when I plug my monitor up, my monitor just says going to sleep. Someone from Reddit recommended that I clear the CMOS so I’m watching this to learn what to do. This comment gave me hope, I’m going to try it out.
@@laktoarg Update me if it worked for u
ElijahMC YOLO Nope :(
hi johnny thanks a million mate after watching this youtube video i managed to fix my friend's computers 2 weeks old issue.he left pc turned off for a month & when he turn on his pc system will not boot but instead bsod 0xc0000225, replaced cmos battery set time and date and job done

Tony Fernandes I'm glad it worked out. thanks for watching!
You just saved my life Thanks a lot brother
In 2017 still useful, thanks alot
Kai G thanks for watching!
Acer Veriton, would not power on, power light and fans with limited power would switch on and off. I checked everything... and also removed the CMOS battery but all unsuccessful.
So I finally tried the CMOS clear jumper and it worked.
Thanks for the video and explanation.
dude I just fixed a problem with my motherboard by following your tutorial, and it's the finest tutorial so far, you got a new subscriber
I was surprised to find my cmos reset was an actual labeled button lol
I get no signal on screen.. i already tried putting the jumper to the same position my motherboard is emaxx
I enter the BIOS SETUP ,then save and exit. But, after a few seconds, black screen appears and no response ??
look forward to receiving yours reply
Long-winded, but thorough... I had the kind with the 3 pins, and what I read didn’t tell me to start it in that configuration. Thanks!
After clearing cmos you need to intall Windows again?? Or it come to factory reset?
Never mind.. kinda embarrasing but it turned out to be a faulty hdmi cable..(most likely at least, worked when I switched to DVI..
Throw away your damn pc
I'm facing same problem
I'm facing same problem
Switching the jumper then turning the computer was the magic point for me. Thanks man!
legend, id spent all day troubleshooting everything twice and this was the only solution. much thanks very good
2 questions, 1.) where can i get this jumper part? and 2, will i lose my data and files??
1. Refer your Motherboard Manual for the location of the Jumper
2. Unless you format your SSD/HDD specifically, you won't
Hey, the computer in a recessed Art frame!! God, I remember seeing that on Hak5 many years ago. I was thinking about doing it with an old laptop mobo
i found the cmos but i dont have the jumper thing
where did u get the jumper
take a screw driver and jump the two pins together, switch on your pc while holding your screw driver in place.

JUST SHORT IT WITH A SCREWDRIVER

first of all congratulations on the obvious knowledge you have, and for making a quality video without a bunch of stuttering and bad camera work
Great video! my computer went black with the number 99 in the bottom right corner. I started researching on another computer and ended up here, which solved my problem. I thought my computer was totally dead and out. I guess i learned something really important and basic about computers today. Thank you very much.
Actually my friend told me, just to use a small screwdriver and just keep it on the two little reset pins for 5 seconds.
Randy89kk this is my exact problem right now!! Did you find a fix to yours? Can you please let me know
No led blinking in the motherboard indicates problem in the psu or some wrong connection you may have accidently made (considering you pointed out that you assembled a new pc )
Wouldnt it be faster to just take the battery and remove it for a few seconds and placing it back vs trying to find the jumper/buying one
You're an absolute legend dude!! Thank you so much
Thanks for the link in the description which jumps straight the point. Only high quality videos do stuff like that, so thanks.
this is the best explanatory video on cmos clearing that i've ever seen
Thank you so much for this video, you were very clear and informative with this instruction.
I reset mine but I still get a black screen an I tried many times
MotoTech found a fix?
You have to reset the ram. Take off the ram, turn on the pc, let it 3 seconds. Probabily you will hear some beeps, turn off the pc, put the ram back and turn it on. Is Better if you put the stick ram one by one.
Most tutorials include taking out and putting in the motherboard battery as part of the CMOS reset. Is there any particular reason you didn't?
Thank you soooo much, just ook 15 mins to fix a system Ive been messing with for a couple hours!
+AnimalStomper I think it may be the RAM isn't put in correctly. That's what happened to me.
+rockstarMileyCyrus I got it to run. It was because I didn't put the RAM in correctly.
Wish it was that simple for me.
+minecraftace123 SAME thing is happening to me rn...

Now, that the procedure is clear,
Thank you so much. Life changer. Almost spent $180 on a computer tech call-out.
I did this to my Toshiba 655, now every time I turn it on it moans seductively and
asks me if I want to play a game ?
Why is this a question? Why is this being said at all? 🤨
Thank you for a very informative segment!
Thank you for watching!

LENOVOVO Thanks!
***** You're welcome :-)
Thanks, Johnny! This worked like a charm. MUCH appreciated!
Thanks!

WHERE DO I GET A JUMPER???
PLS REPLY
LOL same Q
kishan Singh you can actualy short them out without it with a screwdriver
hmm i thougth also
Why this video is 12 minutes long I have no clue. this could've been summed up in 2.
I agree with you. When you make your own video do it for 2 min. When some one makes it watch or shut the fuck up
Tech Geek Thanks but I just went somewhere else. And FYI when you use the age old "I'd like to see yours" argument it makes you sound like you're about 12.
This is legitimate criticism.
GrandTheftEx i had a problem with my pc whoch this video solved and also explained to me why it happens, so a 12 minute video is absolutely necessary.
GrandTheftEx Personally and I think this goes for many other people as well with loads of videos I have watched on how to reset it, they show how but none have explained why you might need to
2 minutes? It can be done in 2 seconds. "Hit this button and bam!"
Although I guess you do have to explain why you'd need the bios update so you could need a few more seconds to do the explaining.
Worked man been stressing about this for a year even left da pc in da garage thanx dawgie
I want to thank you for your great support on my old 12 years old motherboard.
Thank's again
thanks man
YYYYYYEEEEESSSS IIIIIII LOVE UUUUU I THOUGH MY PC WAS DEAD IT WORKEDDD HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

ItsRacer damn me too but i dont have that same board
So i installed a new power supply, previously having a 650w and now moved to a 750w and it won't start now? Would doing this help me at all?
Can a dead battery prevent a pc from switching on ?
That "nothing" that it does is helpful thank you, I had no idea! I knew that this was possible which is what got me to land on your video thanks for the video and the help of a tip, that I wasn't aware.! Good job!
Might be an old video but it still works! I had a no post and this video solved the problem. Thanks!
Thanks to your tips, I brought back my desktop back from the dead. It just needed the CMOS to be cleared. Hey presto, it was working. Thanks
