  • CVT tranmission fluid change
    A basic how-to on changing CVT fluid in a Nissan. This basic how-to on replacing the fluid on CVT transmissions. Each car has a specific fluid and always check to see that the fluid you use is correct and compatible. CVT transmissions are very different than normal automatics and the fluid is very important in extending the life of the transmission.

    I missed the part where you remove the overflow bolt so that you get the fluid level perfect. This is why the newer ones do not have dipstick readers. You remove the overflow bolt instead. This will set your fluid level correctly.

    I did not see the cylindrical transmission filter being changed out. All you did is drop the bottom of the pan, but the filter is actually under a housing cover located where are the cooling line goes into the transmission.

    From what other people use in these they don't seem too picky about fluid as long as it has NS3 on the label somewhere. Other than that avoid regular ATF such as Dexron or Mercon and or you will destroy it. Don't use regular ATF under any circumstances, not for a top off or not for emergency use. Ideally if all of your vehicles have a CVT you would not want that regular ATF in your garage for you to mistakenly use. I have read a couple horror stories of Honda CVTs being ruined that way, the mechanic must not have realized it could only have CVT fluid. I hear Toyota and Honda CVTs are the two best but maybe Nissan is good too and people just fall for the 60,000 mile bullsh!t. 60,000 is way too long for that fluid considering how nasty it can get. Some people never have their vehicles for that long. I wonder if they just said 60,000 to make them seem more attractive to lease since some of those customers don't know diddly squat about maintaining their car. The ones leasing the probably also won't keep them long enough to get that many miles. I think the new ones lack the dipstick just so you can't see how horrible and nasty that fluid is by that time!! I say to Nissan it is too late that cat is out of the bag already now and just as black as my black cat Jinx!!

    Always use a torque wrench on those screws into a soft aluminum transmission. Never install with impact driver. Per Nissan, torque specs on both the pan bolts and the strainer filter bolts is 70 INCH pounds, not foot pounds. This is not very much. Oh yeah, there is also a second cartridge paper filter on the cooler line, that Nissan fails to tell people about. It is a PIA to replace but I would suggest it done at least every other fluid change. The Valvoline synthetic CVT fluid in blue bottle is almost clear like genuine Nissan

I understand that you mentioned replacing the CVT oil only in the case of the "gair," which implies that the oil in the turbine (converter torque) is not replaced. Sup Nimantha, I’ve got the same car (2011 Sentra SR) and I’ve already had to replace the transmission due to a previous owner not changing the fluids and deciding to junk the car. I’ve been driving it for about 2 coming up on 3 years with a used transmission and it’s held up fine aslong as you keep changing the fluid and filters every 30k (one in the pan and another under the beehive). I also recommend upgrading aforementioned beehive to that of the Nissan rouge ( of the same year & cylindrical shape ) which comes with accessory transmission oil inlet and outlet ports that let you install a cooler for the transmission. ( dealer had a recall to install these into our cars but it’s been 10 years they don’t care anymore if you ask ) These CVTs overheat easily- and that will kill it! I’m currently in the process of upgrading the cooler I previously installed from a 15 fin to 40 fin radiator due to how much the smaller one was overheating- don’t skimp out!! the car previously kept going into limp mode (not letting you push gas past 2k RPM) and it’s scary not being able to overtake on jersey highways. I’ve got a transmission temperature gauge installed in the car just gotta put the sensor in and start monitoring the temperatures from now on because I commute and gotta keep my eye on how the transmission is holding up with my driving. Best of luck! Reach out if you need any clarification

    • @daringmotors
      @daringmotors  2 года назад +2

      If there are whining sounds there is a possibility that it could help but for the most part if it is making a noise then damage has already been done and could have a bigger issue. It will never hurt to try though cause if it does fix the noise then that is a lot cheaper than a new transmission

    The fluid you took out was greenish/yellow, the one you poured in was red, maybe there is a change of brand within same spec of fluid, my question Is it ok to mix different fluids as I want o change my fluid as well?
    Second question, you poured in 5 quarts, what's the total capacity of fluid, how much percentage is drained/replaced by this method? thank you

    • @CrimsonRayne
      @CrimsonRayne 2 года назад

      Usually trans fluid is red. Idk why it was greenish yellow. For the amount, you can research or ask a valvoline or midas shop if you cant find it online. Maybe triple sure you know. For my dodge cvt its 7.1 quarts. Any other car can be anything. Best of luck. Measure twice cut once approach

      @@jdantigua1999 it should say "cold" (system is off), and "hot" (system is running) on the dipstick. If it has an overflow check plug, fill it up to the amount you released, then open that and continue adding until it flows out.

      If you are driving and you never feel your vehicle shift but just has a constant rpm while accelerating then it is a cvt. You can also google your car and what transmission it has and you could find out that way as well

    • @daringmotors
      @daringmotors  Год назад +1

      You can do a flush but a transmission flush requires a machine to be hooked up to the system and is not something that can be easily done. I always recommend just to replace the filter and fill it back up as a flush is a more complex service and requires more tools
