Speaking of flipping, Mitchel flipped the "I suggest you lose this number" line on Phil smoothly.

Yes, and I love that he did - Phil deserved it.
Mitch would have never thrown Phil under the bus like he did to him and at the end of season 3, the Tableau Vivant episode not long before this, Phil had done pretty much the same to Mitch, and both then and here he never apologised or showed any regret for what he’d done and put him through.
Mitch deserved better. Phil also hardly thanked or appreciated Mitch whenever he helped him, defended him or had his back throughout the show in spite of how he mistreated him.

      No, it isn’t.
Phil did pretty much the same thing to Mitch in the Tableau Vivant episode at the end of season 3 not long before this one -
Lied about firing him because Phil is afraid of being honest and upfront with people, had he told Mitch the truth, he wouldn’t have showed up at his workplace where Phil took him in the elevator and he got stuck, Phil was finally honest and all his colleagues were mocking and saying horrible things about Mitch and Phil didn’t stand up for him, pretended he didn’t know him and leaned into their hate to protect himself and let Mitch be seen as the bad guy just like here.
And just like in this episode, Phil never apologised to Mitchell or expressed regret for what he’d done to and put him through both times. Mitch even believed that Phil was going to apologise to him in Tableau Vivant, but he didn’t.
There’s one more example btw - The Cold, episode 3, season 6, everyone got sick after Mitch and Cam’s wedding and it was Phil’s fault:
he sneezed on the cake and left his handkerchief out where Mitch picked it up, and he cut the footage out of the wedding video to protect himself and allowed Claire to blame it on Mitch and Cam that she was sick throughout the episode.
Therefore, I think Mitch deserved a better brother-in-law than Phil and Phil should have realised how lucky he was to have Mitch as his and been more grateful for him.

I’ve also watch the season 9 finale, Clash of Swords today which aired exactly six years later on the same day as the Tableau Vivant episode.
Mitch and Phil get dressed up and go to the Hero-Con for their favourite show, Clash of Swords; Mitch makes friends with the other fans, and Phil spoils the show and event for the conventions-goers and they all turn on and start hating him - essentially, Phil gets a taste of what he did to and put Mitch through in Tableau Vivant, Diamond in the Rough and The Cold.
And unlike Phil, Mitch didn’t pretend he didn’t know him (a little at first), turn his back on him and leaned into everyone’s hate for him (when he saw it was Phil) and stuck his neck out for him, persuading all the convention guests to stop ostracising and respect him again.
But Phil never thanked Mitch for doing that for him.
Instead, Phil’s ego got inflated as he thought he was good at inspiring people. Mitch did thank him though for helping him get over his fear of going to conventions and Phil congratulated him on the risk he took stepping out of his comfort zone and going to the convention, but still didn’t thank him.
Ironically, it shows character growth and development in Mitch over the last six years/seasons and proves my point that he deserved a better brother-in-law than Phil, but Phil was the luckiest guy in the world to have Mitchell as his brother-in-law/family, but he didn’t seem to care as much and wasn’t very grateful for him imo.

Say what you want about Phil, I do think he’s funny and a parent who cares, but this, his immature behaviours, a number of his sexist traits and several moments from season 3 have caused me to lose any love and respect I thought I had for his character.
Particularly with how he treated Mitchell in Tableau Vivant (season 3) and now here double-crossing him to look like the bad guy so that Phil won’t be hated and blamed is what’s not to like about his character.
    Thankfully, Mitch double-crossed his double-cross.
Phil should consider himself lucky that he has Mitch as his brother-in-law and family; luckily for him, Mitch didn’t hold what he did to him here and in season 3 against him for long.

    • @F5_Sphere
      @F5_Sphere 6 месяцев назад +1

i wouldn’t say “it shows what he’s really like” phil is a sweet guy. and yes doing this is low but i think a lot of people would do things they aren’t proud of to avoid an arguement with their husband/wife. and what sexist behaviors?

    • @knowledgegathererdraftsave1979
      @knowledgegathererdraftsave1979 6 месяцев назад +3

      @@F5_Sphere
I don’t disagree that Phil is a sweet guy, but his issue is that he lies and doesn’t tell the truth and be honest with others most of the time out of fear for himself being hated and ending up in an argument/confrontation.
In some ways understandable, and what lots of people will do and not be proud of, but Phil lying to Claire to avoid that with her is one thing but here he threw Mitch under the bus so that Claire and Cam would hate and blame him which really seems what he would do to protect himself. Mitch would have never done that to him.
Phil did pretty much the same to Mitch in season 3 and didn’t stand up for and sided against him out of fear of losing his respect and being a laughing stock like he’d made Mitch seem. Phil didn’t seem to regret what he’d done to Mitch in both instances at all.
None of them are perfect of course, but other than all of this, my main issue is that unlike the other times where they all make up and everything’s resolved; Phil never apologised to Mitch both times which I felt didn’t leave it resolved properly.
And what sexist behaviour you asked:
Season 1, episode 12 (Not in My House), Phil was sent a link by his friend for a naked picture of a woman, Claire assumed it was Luke who looked it up and Phil let her believe that because he didn’t want to tell her till she was calmed down and avoid being judged. It was resolved of course.
Season 3, episode 17 (Leap Year), Phil was insensitive and unsympathetic to Claire, Hayley and Alex when they were going through PMS together. Although the day was important to Phil and he had special plans made, he tried to avoid and abandon them because he said what they go through as women makes them monsters which Luke also took to heart as he said they were ‘monsterating’, immensely offended the three of them.
I’m only on season 4, I have 7 more seasons to watch, my respect for Phil has fallen due to all of what I’ve explained, I’m hoping that will change as I watch further on.

I’ve just watched the season 9 finale: *Clash of Swords*
It aired exactly six years after the *Tableau Vivant* episode of season 3, like that one centred on Mitch and Phil’s relationship but showed character growth and development imo on Mitch’s part and how he is the better guy and a better brother-in-law to Phil than he is to him:
Phil got himself in a similar situation in the season 9 finale to what he put Mitch through in this videos episode and Tableau Vivant, but Mitch stood by him and made everything better for Phil, but Phil never thanked or appreciated Mitch for doing that for him.
Phil demanded Mitch’s help - which is ironic when he threw him under the bus in the early seasons like here and didn’t stick up for him - and gave him no gratitude for it.
Mitch thanked Phil though for helping him find the confidence he needed that episode.
Mitch definitely deserved better than Phil did.
More than half the family have treated Mitch dirty; even Cam and his family have as well. Lily, Joe, Haley, Alex and Manny I’d say are the only exceptions.
