Still relevant in 2023, good step-by-step info, works perfectly!
Only issues I had was the Drive/Mounted names defaulting to 'VeraCyrpt Traveler Disk" or something, had to modify the autorun file and replace the first line 'label' with whatever I wanted the new mounted volume to be called. Thanks!

Any way you could explain to me the difference between just EXTRACTING (portable version) from the VeraCrypt Windows Installer version VS creating a "Travelers Disk" through Veracrypt Windows Installer for USBs vs installing the portable version straight from their site on to the USB. All 3 "methods" just put/create VeraCrypt on the USB so you can run Veracrypt "Portably"...
I'm asking as I want to encrypt my USB flash drive but NOT fully encrypt. I just want to be able to create an encrypted container (maybe more than 1) on one of my USB Flash Drives which is why I'm TRYING TO UNDERSTAND the *DIFFERENCE* between,
Step 1---Installing the regular VeraCrypt Windows Installer &
Option 1: Clicking the install file again but choosing the "extract" option and extracting it to the USB Flash Drive (Which would be creating a Portable Veracrypt).
Option 2: Creating a Travelers Disk (Through the "regular veracrypt windows 10 installer version) --- which ultimately is the same thing just adds the option of "auto-run" or w.e...
    and/or lastly
Option 3: Just install VeraCrypt the portable version straight from their site to USB.
What is the difference between these 3 methods, if any?
& if there is a difference which method is considered "best" out of the 3 listed above.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Great question. VeraCrypt is typically installed on a computer or laptop like most applications and does not need a USB key. Another option is to use it as a portable device meaning the program is installed on a USB device along with the volume such as a portable SSD instead of being installed on the PC or laptop. The third way is a Travelers disk which only contains the program which can be used on any system, laptop, or external device to unlock it. I hope that helps clarify.

@@MikeFaucher Thanks for the quick reply, I truly appreciate it. Yeah, that's what I was thinking... To install the Regular Windows Version on my Laptop & PC... and then just downloading the portable version from the official site & saving it on the USB flash drive/drives I want to have Veracrypt on. The only thing I read somewhere, I can't find the link atm was that if you install the portable version (from their site) vs travelers disk option, you must be an "Administrator" or it won't work (which shouldn't be an issue but is something to note). Might give option 1 a try & could always try Option 2 on a different USB flash drive just to see if there are any differences. Option 1 & 3 should be basically the same thing, you just don't have to download the "portable" version from their official site for option 1 (just select "extract" from the regular windows installer and save/extract to the USB....from what I understand)

@@MikeFaucher Sorry to bother you again. quick question: If I have Veracrypt installed on my laptop can I save or copy an encrypted container file to a USB flash drive that does not have Veracrypt on it, but will only be used with/on the Laptop that does have Veracrypt installed. Would I be able to open up that Veracrypt file saved to the USB flash drive once I "plug" it into the laptop & then open up Veracrypt so I can "mount" that encrypted container file & use it.. or NO even if Veracrypt is installed on the Laptop you're using the USB flash drive on you still have to have a "portable" version of Veracrypt on the actual USB to open a encrypted file container saved or copied to the USB flash drive? (hope you understand what Im trying to say lol)

@@dbx_10 If you have VeraCrypt installed on your laptop, you can save, create, or open any encrypted volume including USB drives and they do not have to have any version of the software installed. You only need the portable version if you want to carry that USB drive to a computer that does not have VeraCrypt on it. Youi only need it in one place. Hope that clears it up.

Great video, but I run into an issue when I try to use my flash drive on another computer. As soon as I plug it in, it tells me "You need to format the disk in Drive D: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" Why is this happening and what can I do?

    • @MikeFaucher

If you to the around 8:16 of the video, assuming you installed it as portable version, you will need to run the runtime version that is on the USB drive on the other computer. Hope that helps.

too bad I am not an IT person, as I was completely lost as he skips through so fast, and doesn't explain so much of the jargon. i really don't know how to do it, so wasted my time.

@@MikeFaucher Thank you so much for your help. I have a lot of issues understanding things. I have two 4 TB external hard drives and one 12 TB external hard drive, (all with the same data), and I would like to encrypt them all so that if anyone finds them, they will have to type in a password to access the data. Is this possible to do without losing my data? Thank you!

@@Atlassian. yes absolutely. You can use the veracrypt to encrypt the entire volume. Download and install it on your computer. Then run it from their and select the encrypt an en entire drive an follow the prompts. Do it on a extra to test it but it is pretty easy. Thanks for the feedback.
