I tried this about 30 times. the 5th try, it went perfectly until the boss exploded and killed my guy.... ill try again tomorrow

It's a very tough battle, especially for f2p players. Keep going! You will overcome him. Maybe grind some stuff in onslaught and salvage to get a higher Power Level.

It looks like your guys are leveled up enough that Aleph-Null doesn’t just one shot take them out. That probably helps a lot.

That's correct and there is no way around it. Aleph is the first grind or pay wall in the game.
