      I like to do the same because it gives the neck a bit of a better angle. I think billy sheehan said something like make your strap length the same as when you're sitting down, but still the neck is a bit lower with a strap.

    What's the purpose of the orchestra if Rudess is backing every single orchestral track with the keyboards? You can barely hear them playing.

    • @LotsofStrings
      @LotsofStrings 9 лет назад

      lupash I heard somewhere that the orchestra was horribly out of tune or something. I can't back that statement up in any way as I didn't watch the concert myself but if that's true that might have something to do with it.

    • @lupash
      @lupash 9 лет назад +6

      Akira Takade Makes sense. Completely out of tune orchestra, then they record Rudess' parts instead of the orchestra once back in studio so they can publish the dvd. It wouldn't be the first time they do it, happened before with Labrie's vocals or even Petrucci's parts becasue of technical issues. In fact, if you listen to Illumination theory, the orchestral intermezzo is clearly not played live, it's just from the original studio track.

    • @chrisklecker
      @chrisklecker 10 лет назад +30

      Actually, it's yes to the 2003 answer. James has had a vocal coach for a while now, but they tried something new I believe to keep James' voice not only in shape but to improve it after his accident. He's been working on it for the past 10 years and he has said when Octovarium came out he was back on track and feeling the most comfortable and in shape since Awake. It does seem James has lost his epic high voice for good, however perhaps Illumination Theory might prove me wrong. Either way, each concert he has improved. Score was when I noticed his voice was 100% back. Here, I think he's moved even further. His range has suffered, but he has done a remarkable job with his voice. These songs are brutal for a vocalist.

    People need to stop shitting on Mike Mangini. Sure, maybe he isn't as "energetic" as Portnoy was, but Mangini is technically perfect while drumming. Maybe it's not a big deal to me, seeing that Neil Peart is my favorite drummer, and he isn't a jump around style of drummer. Drummer's like Peart and Mangini might not be energetic, but they are always perfect on their timing, and only fuck up when they break a stick. Give Mangini a break, he's filling big shoes and is doing a good job of it.

Mangini played this one very accurate, almost identical to the original studio version but with not too much flow or feeling, i guess because he was playing with an orchestra or because he was using a metronome.

      Not perfect, his vibrato is still out of control and he knows that, which is why he tries to use it less now. He knows that if he lets his vibrato go on for too long it becomes annoying and gets out of tune. Intonation wise he did improve a lot but it sounds like he's using a better vocal technique now. Maybe he is now seeing a vocal coach.

    I really can't understand why people don't like James labrie as a singer in DT I really can't!

  • @carlwelch8256
    @carlwelch8256 9 лет назад +7

    First off, I have taken lessons from Petrucci since they were looking for a singer to replace Charlie Dominici until about just after the awake album. All the band members at the time were great, except for Kevin Moore, he was always a putz. Although I always liked Mike Portnoy, his controlling attitude regarding the band was bad for the band chemistry. TO Monkeys point, LaBrie was always good. The stuff they (and I mean Portnoy primarily) had him constantly reaching outside of his vocal range. Now he is sticking more in his range, therefore sounding better. With the addition of Although Moore was very creative, again he was a putz. I think Jordan is much better in both attitude and creativity. Now with Mangini at the the drums, they are at a whole new level After 25 years!! After reading alot of the posts, I agree that Marco is not a good DT fit. As far as Mangini looking bored, well would you be more excited playing other peoples stuff or your own. matter of opinion I guess. I can say back in Long Island we called John A nerd who happens to be a God at the guitar. Practiced almost militantly, Metronome, recording himself when he practiced so he could listen to what he needed work on. Incredible guy, him and his wife Rena are both great people. Anyway, just a chime in.

    • @carlwelch8256
      @carlwelch8256 9 лет назад +1

      Sorry, I have not been on in a while. I have met kevin only a couple of times. But He just was really just full of himself. Everyone else in the band was great. I mean when John and his wife first moved in together, I remember going to a lesson and they all were on the couch playing super Mario Brothers. We go start the lesson, and he says "check this out" and he played this tune, which I thought was a demo for the new album. I was like cool is that going to end up being recorded. He said "No, I was playing on on the board pipeworld and it gave me this idea" I told him he was friggin out there. Anyway, Kevin ended up leaving the band, and if you read some of Portnoy's interviews regarding OSI. He didn't want to work with Kevin really anymore either. And yes, my story is true. I started lessons with him while he was still living with his parents in Kings Park LI. This was when they were recording Images and words. He then moved to Farmingdale with his girlfriend, now wifew Rena Sands. She Also was awesome. Very sweet woman. He moved to Jersey, but still came to LI on the weekends to give lessons. Over all I have nothing but great things to say about John and his wife. Although I have not spoken to them in a very long time. He was one of the nicest guys in the world.

    So much better than Luna Park!!! This DVD may not end up being on the same level as Score (which I thought was magnificent), but judging how this sounds so far, it is sounding amazing.
    The orchestra adds an atmosphere which makes the mix sound much bigger. The Luna Park mix was like 60% Petrucci's over-chorused guitar, with Jordan being hidden WAY too low in the mix. And Mangini's kit sounded underwhelming on Luna Park. (Snare sounded dead instead of popping, etc.) Luna Park just lacked environment.
    Mangini still looks relatively uninspired in this video, but I suppose he plays with such economy and is not as much as a showman as Portnoy. Regardless, Mangini's kit sounds a lot better to me here than on Luna Park.
    James sounds awesome here too! Nothing new though, as he was outstanding on Luna Park and Score as well. The post-production is decent, with a bit too much auto-tune. But I honestly would rather have a bit too much than hear any off-key notes. Sour notes drive me crazy, though they are inevitable in the live setting.
    Oh, and one last thing....brilliant song choice! I guess it helps that SFaM is my fav. album of all time.

    • @br767
      @br767 10 лет назад +2

      Haha ya, not to mention a majority of the whole song. When he sings "if only I find the way" at 4:22, it sounds like a keyboard. Why they went way overboard with the auto-tune, I'm not sure. It's not like his pitch is that far off. They could have easily used extremely light auto tune to the point where it would be hardly noticeable but still be in tune.

    • @br767
      @br767 10 лет назад +2

      ***** It is true they're using backing tapes. As much as I'd like it not to be the case, they have without a doubt auto-tuned the lead vocals. Listed to the phrase "won't go away" at 4:04. If that's not obvious auto-tune, I don't know what is. It's a shame they do it so obviously. No one can sing that perfectly in pitch, and when I hear that keyboard-like vocal sound in rock music it just sounds hilarious. That heavy of auto-tune belongs in radio pop, not Dream Theater.

      B rad 4:05 is just the compression, but it does sound modified at 4:35, it's probably a vocal effect (yes, you can do vocal effects live). However, the whole song is, in fact, slightly auto-tuned.

    • @randymckinley4137
      @randymckinley4137 10 лет назад +2

      why would they have to auto tune his voice and leave other mistakes alone to be heard? Makes no sense, so I don't think it's auto tune. I think you're hearing the strings in the mix, and also the backing vocals of all those people standing in the back of the band. There are so many things going on instrumentally. James makes an obvious error going into the first chorus, and they didn't fix it....at 2:00 he starts the phrase with the wrong note. Probably was distracted, but I could give a shit. He's an amazing vocalist live, and he's human! Dream Theater - Official Video Strange Deja Vu (Live From The Boston Opera House)

    I didn't think Mangini could annoy me any more, but a headband? Seriously?

      Who cares what he's wearing? Did you hear him play?

      I recall him saying something about the headband helping keep his in-ear monitors in place, it's purely a practicality thing for him.

      So yeah, the fact that he wear a headband change the music he plays. So nice that you care more about the look than the music.

      Mangini's playing is technically very good, but wtf is going on with that hair of his?

    • @Brendan_G
      @Brendan_G 10 лет назад +3

      SamhainMisfit That's another one, he says that the kind of length that he had when he joined the band has a larger tendency to get in his eyes while he played so he grew it out for that reason.

    Call me a fan boy, but i still miss Portnoy. I can't listen those new albums. Dream Theater was it was in 2011. Portnoy has substantial presence on the songs when we talk about the music production and composing. Dream Theater is clearly different from 2011 after Mike Portnoy.

      +Vinicius Suguri dafuck you doing here then? dear god, get over it. Close this video and listen to the Winery Dogs. Really tired of you all complaining over and over again. Portnoy left the band by his OWN decission. Get over it. Don't listen to DT anymore if you don't like it, we won't miss you.

    James Labrie has always been an underrated MONSTER, yes... he had his food poisoning issue that fucked him for a good 15 years. However, as a musician covering dream theater, I can tell you you'll find a lot of singers out there with good vocal range, they'll sing some crazy power metal high toned songs but they'll pussy out on dream theater. You guys have no idea how tough it is to do what JLB does night after night, its not only the high tones and the vibratos, its so much more... Its the way he plays out a character while he is singing, the odd time signatures he plays to, such demanding key signature transitions etc. Im so glad he is having some recognition and FINALLY a decent live mix PLEASE PPL SMOKE ONE AND CRANK IT UP WITH HEADPHONES the choir is surreal.

      I'll tell you what. I used to hold James Tate on the highest regard and James Labrie as a meh kind of guy. As years passed and I saw what each individual did with their God given gifts I sincerely and honestly respect Labrie so much is no joke. I forgot when was the last time I heard Tate sing, even though I actually went to meet him.
      And btw, I asked Jaime Vendera for help BECAUSE of what happened to James. That was when I tried to start singing. The guy is for real.
      Also that's not the ONLY VC James has asked for help. He's on the journey and deserves respect for that alone.
