  • Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Parker joined the U.S. Marine Corps on July 22, 1968 just after graduation from high school. He attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and additional training in North Carolina and California. His first assignment in Da Nang was as a baker, and then later he was assigned to the mailroom on the base. In addition to the seven day a week job in the mail room, he also went out on patrols, or as extra help with reconnaissance at night as a machine gunner. He was discharged in February of 1970, and returned home to West Hartford, CT, where he worked as a firefighter for 24 years in West Hartford, and in Hartford for seven. He joined the VFW in West Hartford shortly after returning from Vietnam.

Mike, are you talking about Red Beach as your base? Curious, I was an MP on the main gate there in 1969.

Why did they fight that war in the first place? Why were young people tricked and forced into doing service for reasons that never were explained to them properly? There is also the other side of the medal. The unglorious one which cannot be done away with pride, protection or duty.
