@@JakeSloan I just picked up my mini 3 with flymore kit, and picked up Nd filters, kind of intimidated how to fly this thing now lol, I will check out your beginners video first
Thanks for the info. I previously heard shutter speed twice frame rate. Would you always stick with pro settings or would auto settings compensate if no filters? Sorry if question sounds dumb
Hi Jake.....Air 2S came with 4,8,16,32 ND's. Then I bought 8 pack Freewell ND/PL. Being new to all of this. My first attempt looked terrible. Took video of a sunny day 2 hours before sunset. Left camera on auto and used a 4 ND/PL. The video ended up with blotchy dark blue segments as I yawed around. So after watching this gives me a better idea how to calibrate my settings and filter choices. By the way. As fast as you speak. You'd qualify for an ATC at an airport.....LOL
Hahahahahaha I did almost go into the field but realized pretty quickly the stress level wasn’t for me 😂😂😂. Now I just try to repeat back what they say 😜
also if you don’t mind my chiming in, when I have tested the filters for which one to use, I also view the histogram. It is a pretty good indicator of which filter to use. The histogram should be in the middle and even as possible. You will notice that with a too light of a filter or too dark the histogram goes way far to the left or right. Thanks for your videos! super appreciate the time you spend to help others.
Thanks for this video and your other one on ND filters for DJI mini 3. Got the DJI ND filter set for mini 3, it includes only 4, 6, and 8 stop ND filters, so far been living with 6 stop (ND64) filter in daytime. I’ll give the 8 stop (ND264) a try when flying over a river and try the 4 stop at sunset.
THIS is exactly the kind of stuff amateur photographer/drone pilots can use. I have tried and true methods I rely on, but ALWAYS appreciate variations in approach to getting these right. I like VND for the convenience of keeping one filter on the drone, fast tuning of exposure, etc. They are not perfect, though with 2 pieces of glass can introduce weird flares, vignette and other undesirable aberration. The hardest choice for me is when I have variable aperture. Would you: Adjust as much as possible with aperture, adding ND Filters,if still needed to reach 180 shutter OR: Go for a mid-level aperture, with the better image quality provided, and use as much ND Filtering as needed to do most of the light reduction, having aperture at an optimal setting? I'm an analytical type (if that wasn't painfully apparent) and get caught up over-thinking things. By the time I've settled on a plan, the sun has set, and the moment is lost, lol!
I typically go the second route with VNDs. Set them so I have the widest option for settings on the drone without needing to come back land and adjust.
Thanks very much for this, Jake. I had my new Mini 3 Pro out to a beautiful location over the weekend. Since I haven't been able to source the filters I want yet the video results were slightly less than impressive.
I've been watching ND filter videos all day and you finally made it all make sense and sound so simple. Thank you! Subbed and looking forward to learning more from you 🙌🏽
Jake, Thanks! Once again packed full of info. I just flew a sunrise city skyline with my Mavic 3 this morning and I didn't want to return to swap ND filters. A bit of a challenge, but I started with a 16 and flew several passes to burn through the battery, but after, I certainly had to go up to an ND32 once I had the drone back. But I find with such directional light the east face of the buildings were almost blowing out the highlights and the south facing shadows were pretty dark.
Same here. Even swapping out with CPL I get back home and footage was not so good. Years ago o took a CSI photography class and what I learned is still so applicable today. One word : lighting. Just that one moment in the day when no matter what drone - the footage is. Epic.
This is great video for beginners. Even so, the video is a year old, still great info shared. I am also new using drones and I found this video very helpful right on point.👍🏽 thank you for sharing your knowledge. 👏🏽👏🏽

I have got the Skyreat filters set and I must say is not what I have expected, I mean you need to setup lots of settings with these filters otherwise you buy something that is not really make any difference.
Thanks for the clear explanation! So, if you are filming by daylight, 90% chance that you have to put on a ND filter right? And why not using a variable ND filter instead of pulling of and putting on different ND filters. I am always scared to damage the gimbal as the gimbal of the mini 3 feels so fragile.
there aren't many variable ND filters for drones but if one is made for your model of drone then yes absolutely, it makes it so you only need to carry 1 or 2 filters instead of a whole set

Thanks for dumbing it down for me 😂 😂 appreciate it. C But can someone explain what "noise" means in terms of increasing iso? Like what exactly is "noise"
Thanx for very informative explanation. Just wonder between Polarized and ND filter. Which one should one use? I like the look of the polarized. The color of the sky etc, but what about the motion blur?
@@JakeSloan yes that makes cense. I just ordered ND-filters from Skyreat and the package includes only one CPL and 5 ND-filters. So best would be to have combined, but in my case I suppose I need to choose between motion blur or deeper colors? Flying high it's probably no brainer as there is no motion blur visible, but flying low is the tricky one.
I didn't think you were supposed to orientate your drone toward the sun when using a polarizing filter? All I've seen online mentions to set up and use your polarizing filter 90 degrees from the direction of the sun. No?
Great video! I’m looking for an MD filter/PL for the beach that will make the water look the same or more blue along with the sky… I just bought PolarPro ND filters and CPL and I’m not too impressed… It looks the most blue with no filter at all. I’m thi linking ND8/PL since it’s the lowest number came with I don’t have a 4 and even though you said it’s most likely for a cloudy day could I still use it for what I’m looking for at the beach?
I’ve also used an ND 8 on cloudy days especially around water with great success. On polarized filters make sure to rotate it around to get the best position but on cloudy days you will see little to no effect as there isn’t really any direct light to block with the polarized filter
I'm a new drone owner and learning about camera settings and filters. THANK YOU for this awesome explanation of the filters!!

Thank you!
You're welcome!
One remark, when I use ND filter it doesn't allow making panorama photos.
Interesting
Thanx for very informative explanation. Just wonder between Polarized and ND filter. Which one should one use? I like the look of the polarized. The color of the sky etc, but what about the motion blur?
You wouod use the same strength as without the polarization. So bright sunny day ND64 PL combo if that makes sense
@@LionCoupleenRoute you still get motion blur with PL ones. it's just more punchy and less reflections?
@@pres002 thanks. I should get the filters at the end of July. Must test the CPL and see what the shutter speed will be.
What about ND1000?
I show what that’s useful for here: ruclips.net/video/VOpWbNNTVag/видео.html basically long exposure photography and hyperlapses
@@JakeSloan thanks.. I just got My freewell All day pack for My mini 3 pro
so does the BRAND MATTER>? ive seen a KAZILLION videos on these filters for our mini 3s and 4s etc... but not much about the brands to buy!!!
the brand does matter somewhat as different brands have differing levels of quality. I highly recommend freewell filters
@JakeSloan I ordered mine they were due here today. They aren't even shipped yet day 9. Free we'll let ya know when we feel like shipping it lol
I didn't think you were supposed to orientate your drone toward the sun when using a polarizing filter? All I've seen online mentions to set up and use your polarizing filter 90 degrees from the direction of the sun. No?
You want to orient the polarizer so it cuts out reflections from the sun so it depends on the direction you fly
When do i use ND 1000
If you are doing hyperlapses or long exposures
0:45 shutter speed rule
yep
