The 1960s was a decade that saw a tremendous amount of societal, cultural, political, and technological changes transpire - especially during the latter half of the decade. The first chunk of the 60s weren't that much unlike the late 1950s, but as we all know, the counterculture movement that gave us iconic things such as Woodstock and the Beatles changed all of that.
It was a particularly groundbreaking time for the world of television especially. During this era, social factors played a role in the decline of more traditional family-friendly programming that viewers were used to in the previous decade, but that wasn't necessarily as reflected in the ratings as it would be in the 70s.
The swinging 60s were an era that embraced a willful departure from orthodoxy. At the same time, some viewers still clung to the sensibilities and values that were held dear in the 1950s. As such, what you got in the 60s, was a bit of a mixed bag of old-school ideals combined with fresh new material that challenged the status quo - albeit a bit more subtly than the following decade
Westerns dominated the ratings during the early years of the 60s, while sitcoms and variety shows would prove to be quite popular in the second half of the decade. By the final year of the 60s, however, one sketch comedy show would burst on to the scene that would lay the groundwork for the future of shows in this category. If you're interested in learning what that show was, be sure to watch this video in full.
The Most Watched TV Series of the 1960s (By Year)
My favorites was Bonanza and Beverly Hillbillies. I loved both of these and , have them in DVD collections that allow me to watch them anytime I want. Wished they still made shows like that.
Thank you for sharing your favorite TV shows. Sadly, they don't make those kind of shows nowadays.
@@FactsVerse Your very welcome!! Yes, sadly they don't make these type of shows now a days. Other shows I liked not mentioned in this video. Are the shows "Brady Bunch", and "Happy Days", " Lavern & Shirley", and "Lassie & Timmy".

Touché
In the mid 60s in the fall, when the new season was beginning, people would actually tune in because their major sponsor was Chevrolet so they could see what the new models looked like.
My favorite of these was Beverly Hillbillies. I liked them all. My dad did not miss Gunsmoke.
Who was your favorite Beverly Hillbillies character?
Granny because as old as she was, she was a spit fire!
A person in the 60's only had a handful of channels to watch that went off the air around midnight until 6am so there were actually far less shows to view. Even shows like the Flintstones were prime time viewing.
There was no remote control, either. After midnight all you could watch was the test pattern.
Like in Australia in the seventies.
My favorite show of this era was Hogan's Heroes.
"I know nothing!"
Mine too! Ha! Listen to this!Back in the day ,
IF I didn’t have to work at ponderosa steak house after school, I WOULD FLY HOME in my cool 1968 junker AMC JAVELIN , (loved that car!) and make my favorite peanut butter sandwich , & settle in for the 4:00 pm glorious Hogans Heroes episode .
On my 17 Birthday I had the day all planned!
No matter what I wanted to make sure I would be home for the daily afternoon episode. That day, all my friends kept wanting to come over and “ hang out”. I told them NO , and what I wanted to do.
They kept insisting and finally i just got fed up & pissed , but said “ Fine. You can come over but I AM WATCHING HOGANS HEROES no MATTER WHAT and guys can do what you want!”
Well… they all came over, and to MY HORROR, my poor Mother had planned a big SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY!
Here were like 20 kids gathered at the house, and tho we were poor, my single Mom with three kids, scrimped and saved and had ordered pizza , soda and baked a special cake.
In those days you respected your parents when it came down to it , and of course I had to then “play along” & pretend to enjoy the surprise.
Only another Hogans Heroes fan would understand how secretly I was NEVER SO PISSED!!! Lol!
I had my perfect Birthday all planned in my head & couldn’t follow thru, without hurting my Mother’s feelings and looking the complete asshole to my friends.
I’m 60 now, not nearly as self absorbed, lol, but I still catch an episode now & then when I I can. I loved Bob Crane & all the other characters almost as much. Just curious, Do you still ever watch? Lol what a memory - what a show
@@1927su I know nothing! Hogan's Heroes was great. A friend named his German Shepherd Schultz. I watch it sometimes if I'm surfing and it's on. I wonder what ever happened to Klink's secretary. Helga? She was hot.
You had an AMC Javelin and loved it? You might have been the only one who could say that. lol
I was a latch key kid before we knew what latch key kids were. I would come home and get some peanut butter (we got commodities from the county who got it from the USDA because we were poor and it was before food stamps), and I"d take PB and syrup and mix it together. Then I'd put it on bread, and that was my after-school snack every day. Still eat PB every day and I'm almost 70.
What about The Big Valley & Green Acres?! Those were great shows too!👍🏽👍🏽👌🏽
Linda Evans made The Big Valley worth watching.
@@slundgr Lee Majors too🤩
@@kve1247 And who can forget his wife, Farrah.
Also Shiloh, High Chaparral, The Untouchables, Wagon Train. Daniel Boone, Get Smart.
@slundgr what about the great Barbara Stanwyck
Still watch Gunsmoke.
don't forget rawhide
We do too! Be on the lookout for our next video!
Andy Griffith show was my two boys and myself watched every week
Happy to hear that you and your two boys love the Andy Griffith Show! Which character appealed to you the most?
My favorite show of the 1960's? The Man From U.N.C.L.E. It was replaced by Laugh-In in the time slot on NBC.
Get Smart, Bonanza, The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke are magnificent shows. Gunsmoke is my favorite show.
did miss kitty give you impure thoughts?
Great picks! What other types of videos would you like to see?
I’m surprised that Andy Griffith was most popular by the end of its run. The early seasons are the best in my opinion. Honorable mentions would be cool. Green Acres, I Dream of Jeannie, The Munsters, Carol Burnette, etc..
I remember all of them but I loved Dark Shadows from 66 to 71
Glad you were able to remember all of them 😊
I loved Barnabas Collins on dark shadows. He was my favorite character. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Rowan and Martin's laugh in
Rowan & Martin's Laugh In was at least partly inspired by The Smoother's Brothers, that ran for about six seasons before 1968.
Green acres was not a spin-off of The Beverly hillbillies as you stated. Green acres was a spin-off from petticoat junction which is a very different rural themed show.
True. But they were created and produced by the same team and eventually the three shows crossed over.
@@shaynestephens yes but it's been off involves taking one character from a show and starting another show with him or her.
Bonanza was the first TV show I ever saw in living color. My all-time favorite show from the sixties was Combat! Laugh-In was a great hit, and it helped Goldie Hawn get her start. Judy Carnes, who was married to Burt Reynolds was also on the show.
Judy carne was the sock it to me girl on laugh-in. From Ms. Harper Stacey.
Judy carne also played captain Healy"s girlfriend on l dream of Jeannie during the first season in 1965.
Bonanza had the best colour of any TV show of that time, when they were just starting to produce colour TV. So many of the shows had very bad colour.
@@carolynking5470 Yes, the technology was not very advanced at that time. I think people were just glad to have color instead of B&W TV
I loved Laugh In because it grabbed u by the throat but u were laughing so hard that u didn’t even noticed!
In my opinion the best western of the early 60s was "Rawhide" and of course another one I liked was "Bronco".👍
Mine was The Rifleman. Combat! was my favorite show of the era.
Hillbillies, I love Lucy, & some Western
Love me some Gunsmoke!!
We do agree! Gunsmoke is one of the best Western 💗
Green Acres still rocks.
Used to really like “My world and welcome to it” with William Windom, Lisa Gerritsan and ? but only ran for a short time in the late 60’s.
Funny I find myself watching the 60's TV shows instead of what is on today.
Sixties TV had a little bit of everything.
My favorites were Hogan's Heroes, Wagon Train, Laugh In, The Fugitive, Carol Burnett, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Larado, The Virginian, Gomer Pyle and a whole bunch others. These were entertaining. Copared to the majority of what 's showing today. 8:01
Thank you so much for sharing! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?

We're happy to know that you're a fan of Bonanza. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
i love the shows in the 60's and the 70's gunsmoke bonanza mr ed
In 1960's we had a wealth of good TV shows . Its hard to pick out a favourite when all the TV Shows were good
But I think BONANZA was my overall favourite TV Show with THE RIFLEMAN at a close 2nd in 1960's
Everybody loved HOSS on Bonanza and MARK on The Rifleman .
It was a simpler time back then and maybe that’s why I like it so much!
Granny: Jethroooo! You avert your eyes young whippersnapper , Goldie You go put some clothes on young lady.
I like Mission: Impossible, Lost In Space and Star Trek. The 60's had some great shows. Star Trek is the best show.

Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! What other types of video would you like to see on our channel?
Still like the westerns
An honorable mention is " Sugarfoot", with Will Hutchins. The 60s seemed to be run by westerns, doctor shows,& police type shows. 🙏❤☺
Some claimed Laugh-In helped to elect Richard Nixon in 1968 when Nixon did a three-second cameo where he looked stunned and said "Sock it to ME??". Laugh-In offered equal time to Hubert Humphrey but Humphrey turned it down saying it "looked stupid". And it was but it was considered "hip" to be on Laugh-In just as it was considered hip for Bill Clinton to play the saxophone for Arsenio Hall.
When Bill Clinton put on those shades and played that saxophone, he was literally handed the presidency in 1992
Gunsmoke. then Bonanza
Great choice 👍What other types of videos would you like to see?
An actor named frank cady played a character called Sam Drucker, he appeared or is mentioned in Pettycoat Junction, Green acres, and Beverly hillbillies, always as Sam the general store owner
Gunsmoke
Catholic Bishop Fultons Sheens " Life is worth Living"!!!
Beverly hillbillies, my favourite show of all time.

Fun stuff, thanks for sharing! What is your favorite episode of Bonanza?
60's was know as the three B's - The Beatles - Bonds - Batman.
WHAT ABOUT THAT GIRL, I REMEMBER I LOVED THAT SHOW.
What about Gomer Pyle USMC which never once hinted at the fact that we were at war in Viet Nam? Ed Sullivan, a variety show that basically told us what songs to listen to.
Me, just watched Gunsmoke and its reruns
We're happy to know that you love Gunsmoke. Which episode is the most memorable to you?
Andy Griffith was the best of the listed. I wonder if Laugh in reruns play on any networks.
Just on RUclips
Laugh In, definitely. Made me laugh and just when I was getting the jokes and the political humor. It was pulled.
How could you not mention Goldie Hawn when you covered Laugh-In?
That's where she got her start. And Judy Carnes was married to Burt Reynolds.
My favorite 60's show was The Smothers Brothers.
What about Batman it started in 66.
Batman was the hottest thing on tv in '66. When u have veteran actors begging can they get on the show then u know u are a hit
@@cdgates1 absolutely
What Bonanza wives??
I'm surprised you didn't say anything more about Green Acres, other than mentioning Mr. Haney. You forgot about Petticoat Junction.
The great thing about these shows was they could be funny without swearing, politics, sexual references and just plain filth
I was born in 1986 . I am an Indian lady . I wish I was born in the 40's . I wish I could have met John F Kennedy in the 1960's as a beautiful white lady . Life would have been awesome in 1960's .
Wasn’t born in the 60s but Star Trek TOSand Twilight Zone are my fav tv shows from the US
Glad to know that you're a fan of Star Trek! Which episode is the most memorable for you?
