I like flying the La-5FN more in ground RB than air, I find that the dogfights are more interesting and I surprise people with the performance of my plane more often than not when they can't tell what plane and variant I'm using.
ikr, A6M2 in ground RB is a god, i was 1 vs 3 yesterday and outcome was 2 kills 1 dude crashed into the ground xD

Ground RB is shit you cant dogfight for 30 seconds before a noob spawns 3km above you and full commits. Energy fufhters are unplayable. You should have to take off in GRB, no airspawns

La-5FN was a game-changer the first time I played it. The game instantly became fun again. I was so happy to play it and you get a lot of kills and you are fast and you turn good and it's just amazing. Sure, it has downsides but it was more fun to fly this plane than any other ww2 plane I ever flew. PERSONALLY. Sure, everyone can think differently, but this is an 11/10 plane for me and still my favorite plane in the whole game. Still have to try more tho.
For me the La-7 is even better than the La-5FN. I love both, but somehow the La-7, despite having the same engine and guns, performs extremely well, and I absolutely adore it.
@@v3es473 when I was grinding Russia/USSR and hit the La 5FN I just fell in love with it and grinding was so much more enjoyable. La s are definitely the way to go.
FN is the wierd one. La-5F and La-7 are both better. Used to be nice plane but not anymore imo. La-5F turns much better so you don't have to play speed La-7 can actually play speed. FN is wierd one which doesn't turn well enought and gets locked up.

@@RAZOR_XXX the La-5F may turn better but also has quite a bit less engine power than the FN, at the same BR. I'd rather fly the La-7, and the La-7B-20 is just worse

yay a La-5 video! love La-5/7. Also, to add that people trying to dive away from La because of the lower wing break speed on them is ironically playing to one of the la's strengths; better performance at low altitude.
I tend to do that forcing a reversal but once I see the yak flying away instead of chasing I am screwed, better regain altitude instead of spending all my speed into a dogfight
Thanks for the Video, Defyn. I kinda felt most of what you said in my matches with La-5FN, compression, lack of speed or turning capabilities. But hey, it is quite the legendary plane, so i enjoy it from that perspective.
So happy that Defyn uploaded a video of the La-5FN, My favorite plane in the whole game, got it when i was grinding soviet planes for GRB, and i was surprised with the capabilities of this plane, sure it has downsides, but still FOR ME the Best vehicle the one that made me love Air RB
La-5fn is a great low alt interceptor, with flaps it's a monster, above 10,000 feet it looses its wep. Compression is easy to work around (don't exceed 310 kts in a dive & don't commit to nose dives) and you can unlock it in a day without membership. Great plane. The ShVAKs are probably the best 20mm cannons in the game (high rate of fire = you no miss snapshots).
Glad to know that i am not the only one who finds teams with La-5FN is either hit or miss, nothing in between. Plane is a textbook soviet jack of all trades with bad diving stats, but i can't outturn 4 or 5 enemies when my team decides to go for ground pound right from the start.

Honestly, this was one of my favorite Russian planes to grind when I went back to the lower tiers months ago. It's such a fun dogfighter, even with the compression and lack of ammunition.

Thanks to your videos I'm getting really fun dogfights in now and find it easier reversing attacks and battling in a 2 vs 1.
Today I found myself fighting an A6M2 and an XP-50 in the not-so-maneuverable I-185 (M-82). This would normally be instant death for me, but I gained and held an energy advantage on both which eventually led me to shoot down the XP-50. This guy immediately went to All Chat and in all caps told his team that the A6M2 needed help and that I was being a coward ... and after reading that I thought well shit, ... I'm improving.

This is my favorite plane. Being average at just about everything, it doesn't feel OP while leaving enough room to make it excel if you play well. If you are attacking someone below you, always set throttle to 0%, and if they are low enough, spiral your way down just to avoid the compression.
The Skill Issue decal is best used on the Italian r3. Nothing like finishing 1st place overall using just a SPAA with it plastering the vehicle.

I think we all know that when he gets behind the enemy that enemy definitely starts shitting bricks with the clank sound when it hits the floor
If you take the armor and bullet proof glass modifications off it give it better performance and in my opinion is worth the trade off. This has always been one of my favorite 3.7s to come back to and fly. Great video!
I find aiming the two 20mms in the engine cowl really hard. They have really weird ballistics IMO. Probably the hardest 20mms in the game to shoot with.
Perhaps the main problem is how far off the central axis they are (being above it). In my 600-ish battles in La's I've noticed that it mostly affects close-up shooting, quite similar to C.205's cannons being below the axis or I-185's cannons being everywhere around except the middle of the axis (so you either hit with the upper one or 2 lower ones).
Exactly how I feel about the ki43. I dunno what it is about that gun placement
I'm the opposite. I find weaponry on the top of the nose to be the easiest to aim with wing mounted being the hardest. My advice would be to fly in the test match area a number of times shooting the guns at the targets until you start to get familiar with them.
From personal experience, I think German 20mm's are the most frustrating to aim. That is of course relative to the other 20mm's, and they're still alright, but I do tend to struggle more with them.

Hard to fly, and like most Soviet plane, have to figure out unique tactics to use it. And, this thing in high speed is just like brick, and quite not good when diving. My tactics are stay low (

a revisit on the I-185 (M71)???? maybe a tutorial on reversing enemies on that specific plane, because it is a very tough plane to fly?
especially against japanese opponents which hard counter its good climb rate and energy retention by having similar climb and a slower stall speed.
The only thing Japanese that hard counters the I-185 M-71 is the J2M2. Outside of the J2M2 nothing has enough of a performance advantage to otherwise be an issue for the M-71 due to its level flight speed advantage. The next best plane the Japanese has is the Ki-44-II but that is topping out at around 370mph where the I-185 is capable of going close to 400mph. Sure, the Ki-44-II slightly outclimbs the M-71 and effortlessly outturns it but it has to catch it first. Nothing else you will face from the Japanese tree is a threat outside of A7Ms and A7Ms only because they can actually dive with the M-71 while also being respectably quick in terms of level flight speed. Yes, you want to be wary of the Ki-61 family but they are all slower and with worse climb rates. The A6Ms are even slower still with about similar climb rates to the Ki-61s.
The strengths of the I-185 M-71 is its very good climb rate, roll rate and level flight speed. It's one major weakness is that it has a very poor turn rate. Stick to BnZ and general hit and run tactics, avoid getting slow with enemies around and you will find that the I-185 M-71 is a very strong plane.
@@rainsilent Exactly the opponent I was thinking about, the J2M2, the Re.2005 series 0 and even a pyorremyrsky. I have faced both of these and 9 times out of 10, I die (50:50 for pyorremyrsky). Others not so much.
Its also the fact that the I-185 has very good characteristics for energy trapping but the time it takes to get proper lead after stall (due to its abysmal turn) is so much that an agile enemy can dive, pick up speed and dodge by the time you're within gun range. Very one dimensional plane, but a very consistent one. For other fighters there is usually a plan B if they don't have altitude advantage, but I-185 has only one play style, altitude advantage.
@@pixellivesmatter8409 Re.2005 shouldn't be a problem. It is a worse Spitfire F.IX in nearly every respect. The only thing the 2005 is superior in is medium to high speed turn rate because it can use its flaps. The I-185 sees the F.IX regularly and should have no problems dealing with it if flown right. It should be an easier time with the Re.2005.
The Pyro I can see being a problem because of its combination of great climb rate and handling. It has two weaknesses however. It is fairly slow level flight speed wise and it compresses badly by 400mph. It can't catch you unless you let it and if you think it might catch you get it fast and either reverse it or escape.
Saying that it's one play style is altitude advantage is a bit of a misnomer as that can be said of everything. It's play style isn't altitude advantage. Its play style is speed. Leveraging speed as a usable energy advantage isn't an easy thing for most in game to utilize effectively but it is fairly straight forward. You don't need an altitude advantage to use speed to win fights. Sure, it is a lot easier because you have an even greater energy advantage to use but you don't need it.
That said the I-185 has the potentially strong combination of a very good climb rate and a lot of speed so it should start off with an altitude advantage against most opponents. What makes the I-185 difficult to really use is, as you said, its poor turn rate. Getting better at predicting what your opponent is going to do and setting up for that will help mitigate that disadvantage though. It will never cure it but it can go into mitigating it.
If there is one plane that is guilty of an altitude advantage play style it is the late 109s aka the 109Fs, Gs and K. In general they are above average speed wise with below average maneuverability and a great climb rate without gun pods. With gun pods they become average , poor and good in general.

I think la 5fn is the best ussr plane in rank 3 , and i really loved it , it is good in everything , energy fighter , good canons with a lot ammo, etc. i prefer la 4fn and la 7 more than yaks

The first two La-5s are worse than the La-5FN. The La-5 was a straight LaGG-3 with a radial and has all of the handling issues that the LaGG-3s do. The La-5F improves the engine and airframe slightly. The 5FN is further improvement and is the best of the bunch. It takes the La-7 to really unlock the full potential of the airframe by weeding out all of the problems that were apparent from the LaGG-3/La-5s.

Headon's are less of a skill issue the longer you stick to them. It takes skill to kill some one in a headon from range, but once you stick the headon for too long, the odds become more and more of a 50/50 situation. Sometimes you're forced to take the headon, and you have to accept under those circumstances that you'll very likely die, so you might as well make damn sure you take down the opponent with you.

Unpopular opinion but i actually like LA5 more than the FN version. For some reason my K/D in the LA5 is much higher than the FN.

After playing Japan and becoming a turning addict, I acquired brainrot by playing the La series. La-5FN was fine because there's enough poorly performing planes and low skill players to do decently well without all the patience in the world, but La-7 really struggles unless you play safe, take few risks and EXCLUSIVELY try to energy trap in the vertical. And I swear to god - I can't do it. I don't know how to get between I-225 and Su-25, seeing how the entirety of rank4 and 5 play this way, and rank 5 itself is also objectively dogshit. Send help.
Nah that’s your issue my guy, mid tier ussr are some of the best tiers in the entire game. Not everyone is dependent on a one-trick pony, window licking turnfighter to have fun.

There's something about their performance that constantly made me feel like I'm lacking something, that I have not encountered in UK, Japan, or the USA. I can't quite put my finger on it. Also... if turnfighting is a one trick pony, what do you call the La-7 and La-9?
