  • Hakeem Olajuwon had one of the most unique skillsets ever for a big man. His footwork was impeccable, his defensive timing and IQ perfect, and his court vision was nearly that of a highest-level point guard. Check out how he did it above.

      They should be ashamed they turned down the Blazers offer of #2 pick and Clyde Drexler for Ralph Sampson. I'd imagine the Rockets would use the #2 to draft Jordan or Barkley. Crazy how the history of the NBA could have been so insanely different with just that one trade.

    All of these skills (knowing where teammate is; always looking up when receiving a pass) can be taken directly from football, or soccer for Americans. These skills are ever-present in football players. This is not surprising since Hakeem played football as a child.

      1. We don't have hill-billies in Europe
      2. Football is recognised worldwide, it's not limited to Europe and it transcends class
      3. There is an art in football: the pacing(timing), the footwork, being balanced, self-awareness, accuracy in shooting/ passing. Which is why Hakeem was able to transfer those skills which not many could match and why he is such a renowned player.

Hakeem had no weakness, the midrange that Duncan lacks, he had it. Olajuwon can even do crossovers and pull-ups, lol He was unreal. • @mrskinszszs
      @mrskinszszs 8 лет назад +11

      Rafael Silveira i wouldn't call it a stretch when he retired in the top 10 in every statistical category, led a team to a finals win with no other all star, and has premier forwards (lebron), centers (howard), and guards (kobe) training with him to learn his moves. there are no shortages of qualifiers in his accolades. it speaks to his versatility as a player, and i really don't think there's been a player as versatile as hakeem.

    • @HailKingCeezer
      @HailKingCeezer 8 лет назад +19

      How's it a stretch? Kareem played with 2 top 10 players of all time his whole career haha. Duncan spent his first 6 years with a top 5 of all time Center and top 20 player of all time. Shaq played with 2nd greatest Sg and 3rd greatest SG's of all time and the best years of Pennys career who would have been top 5 pg of all time and then spent his twilight years with Nash/LeBron/KG/Ray Allen/Peirce. Bill Russell had HOFers at every position. Wilt had Jerry West and older Elgin Baylor, two guys older people argue for GOATS but Wilt spent his prime with weak teammates for sure. Give Hakeem any top 20 talent for nearly a decade of his career and there's no reason to believe he wouldn't be standing at the top of the mountain with Michael Jordan who coincidentally could have ended up being his teammate had the Rockets not turned down the Blazers offer of #2 pick and Clyde Drexler for Ralph Sampson. Shiiiiit. Jordan, Akeem, Drexler on the same team?

He also is 1 of 4 people to record a quadruple double & this is the crazy part their has only been 5 quadruple double performances in NBA History out of them 5 he's owns 2 of those performances & he recorded them in the same month! Another testimony to Hakeem's Greatness: When MJ was asked what four other players in their prime would he choose in a pickup game. When it came to naming his big man he chose Hakeem Olajuwon.
    He didn't say Kareem.
    He didn't say Wilt.
    He didn't say Russell.
    He didn't say Shaq.
    He didn't say Ewing.
    He certainly didn't say the so-called "Admiral" to whom Hakeem humiliated in the Western Conference Finals.
    He chose Hakeem! While in itself this isn't THE DEFINITIVE reason, it certainly adds to the preponderance of evidence that Hakeem "The Dream" Olajuwon is the GOAT of all centers. And arguably on the Mount Rushmore of all Backcourt Players. Period!

    Absolutely GREAT Video!!
    I've watched Olajuwon for years, and you covered a good deal more than just the obvious. They're so many subtleties to his game, besides the obvious. Great job!!
    You could of course make a video with more stuff.It's not done, over yet. LOL
    Few things:
    1) The way he blocked shots out deep, particularly on Top Of The Key+ shot attempts.
    2) The Way he defended guards and forwards on the perimeter.
    3) The way he recovered from guarding someone up top to protect from the lob or dump off to his man down low.
    4) The way he played the pick and roll, and could switch on any player (without getting beat) while getting back for the lob or inside pass, if he didn't steal the ball to begin with.
    5) The way he constantly poked at ball handlers; rebounders, and his own man to either bother, slow them down, or the steal the ball, etc..
    6) His pogo stick impression when he can do multiple blocks from the same or different players, while even turning to get them (or various players) from different directions or angles. Just crazy stuff.
    7) Jump shot: A) Stationary. b) Off the spin or fade away C) Off the Cross over/Stop & Pop
    8) His strength: Position on the block; taking blows or shots to the hand, wrist while shooting; fighting off big guys from getting position.
    9) His step Back Jumper, that's more associated with Dirk, than it is Olajuwon, the man who did it before him.
    They're others (and the elaboration). But that's a few for now..

    Something additional which didn't even get mentioned is not only would he get blocks but later in his career he learned to block while keeping the ball in play so the team could do something with it on the other end. It's almost surreal what Hakeem was able to accomplish

    3:53: I haven't seen anybody in the league do that in a looooong time.
    Mike used to do it. Dream used to do it. I think I saw a young Barkley do it a few times.
    No one else.

    Honestly, I think he's the greatest center ever, at the very least the best of the '90s. He "only" has two rings, but he's the last guy who won a championship with no true superstar to play with him(first championship).

    • @leepearlman
      @leepearlman 6 лет назад +2

      Jon-Vegard umm, there's this guy named Dirk who won it all without any other superstars. And don't even think of mentioning 38-year-old J Kidd. Might want to consider 2004 Pistons, also.

    Among the millions n millions of Jordan fans, I was one too, till I saw this man's SKILLS. I'm not referring to anything Else just pure skills, what an Effortless player. According to me Not Jordan, Hakeem is the Real GOAT. He didn't get the attention Jordan got, that's okay even Jordan might feel in his heart that Hakeem is the Real Goat not him. Hakeem in his Prime wud destroy and humiliate 10 Jordan's. What a Master piece he is.

    best big man i ever witnessed play. he could do it all. good heart, work ethic, skill, effort, mobile, athletic, quick, smart, and humble. Easily underrated and best center in my opinion. He had so many moves that he changed the way the game was played and inspired many players. Great story too. this man taught kobe, amare, and etc.

    Underrated defender? From 1986 to 1991, he was 1st in defensive rating in the NBA. Then won DPOY in 1993 and 1994. And is the all time blocks leader.
    There's nothing underrated about Hakeem's defense. Everyone knew he was a shutdown defender.

    He's an under-rated passer. Most players that draw constant double-teams don't actually make you pay for doubling them... Hakeem tho... he's always been good about not only FINDING open players, but also CREATING open players by tempting double- and triple-teams off their man.

    This is why Kobe went to Hakeem to train to get better After Kobe had been in the league for years and won championships - Kobe also correctly said Hakeem is the best low and mid post player Ever. It's unfortunate that Hakeem spent too many years during his physical prime with crappy teams around him. Like Drexler said, put a good team around Hakeem and you have a chance to win a championship every year. What might have been if he had just had a decent team around him from the late 80's through early 90's.

      mtb rider if the Rockets played it Right the could Have gotten Mike and the Dream, the two best players (imo) of All Time. 20 championships in a row if not more

    • @mtbrider6119
      @mtbrider6119 7 лет назад +1

      They didn't need both of them. They could have just put some decent players around Hakeem after the team fell apart in '86. But it took a change in ownership to get him some decent teammates.

    • @CaesarMagnum
      @CaesarMagnum 7 лет назад

      mtb rider Yes they didnt need them but nowadays i dont think anyone would Pass on jordan to pair him with the dream

    • @mtbrider6119
      @mtbrider6119 7 лет назад +1

      I wouldn't want to see that. It's not good to have all the talent piled up on just a few teams. And I like the fact that Hakeem and other players from his era stuck it out instead of trying to take the easy way like Lebron and others have done.

    • @GeronFletcher
      @GeronFletcher 7 лет назад

      mtb rider he did have some weak teams but people forget he got to the finals in the 80s once with Ralph Sampson but he started having knee troubles and some of their other players were coke heads. Pretty much derailed the team for years
