The Never Journey

  • I'm terribly disappointed in myself.
I had this big plan of travelling from Greece all the way back to Poland, through seven or eight countries. It was going to be great. But getting out of Greece was looking harder and harder - there just didn't seem like there was a way to get from Thessaloniki to Skopje in North Macedonia.
Then the owner of the hostel I was staying at in Thessaloniki suggested a plan. First, he said, take the train to Florina in the north of the country. Once there, find a taxi to take me the ten or twenty kilometres to the crossing point in Niki, a tiny village on the border. Once I'd crossed the border, I was to find a taxi to Bitola and then a bus up to the capital.
It sounded like a fine plan, but there was a problem, it turned out - the border in Niki was closed, and the taxi drivers in Florina were too kind to take my money in exchange for showing this to me.
Disappointed and angry with myself for not doing a better job of being an adventurer, I returned to Thessaloniki, booked into a hotel for a few more nights, and then arranged to fly back to Poland with Ryanair.

You should have gone through Bulgaria. There is a weird political situation with North Macedonia... It's a pity though
