The problem with most people is that as soon as they start making more money, they start spending more money. It's the American way and people are comfortable with payments. I'm in the process of changing that mindset for myself...though I should've done it 20 years ago. I'd be in a much better financial place.

I find it's best to get out of debt being single...feminine women who are halfway attractive seem to have no clue on how to live a frugal life to be able to live the way Dave preaches. I was with this one girl who I told that I was following the 7 baby steps and she kept telling me that I needed to go back to school and get in additional debt in order to earn a higher income. She said, "Everyone was in debt!" When we start dating I was on baby step #2 and I would tell her what I was doing and even gave her my copy of "The Total Money Makeover." I thought she was on board, but she kept wanting to take weekend trips and go out to eat, just to show her Instagram friends the life she was living. I told her I didn't have the money for that, but she told me that I had an emergency account. Make a long story short she finally broke up with me when I refused to take her out to eat after I had already earlier that week went on a "weekend vacation", went to a spa for Valentine's Day and took her to the movies just that Friday...I was more than happy to let her go and spend someone's else money. Women can be like a drug that can cause you to go broke. My emergency fund is down to $340 because of the time I took off of work to get my head bad together, but luckily I had an emergency fund and this time around I'm staying single and reaching this get out of debt goal. If you have a good woman in your corner who sees the promise land and supportive then you are lucky...I've only come across users and abusers

It'll hit her when she looks at her son tonight. I think she's gonna prove most of yall wrong. It takes ppl a little while to come to their senses. She also just got the raise so she's probably not used to living on 90k which is good because it will be easier to adjust. She should be debt free in 3, but it may take her 4 years. Assuming the hubby's on board. Sooner if he gets his income up.

70 k in student loans and make so less income..? No way income has to go up and also spending has to be in control . Some kind of planning like getting less expensive cars , and control over creditcard spending... just ridiculous

To be fair she just started making 90k a year. But it does seem that they spent the money before she earned it, with new cars and a future rent increase.

In CA, $900 a month rent will barely get a 1 room appartment even in San Bernardino. Then after federal, state, and local taxes you barely have enough to even buy the high cost of gas to go to work. Then you look around and see people on welfare making $70k to do nothing. We're better off not even working.

"Move into something that's $900 a month and clean"
Therein lies the problem. Ramsey fails to account for local cost of living yet again. A $900/mo place near me would not be clean. Period. I've looked. My sister does real estate, and I've gone with here to preview homes in sketchy areas, and I've never seen a rental under $1000, and everything under $1200 was a smelly, mildewy dump.

It was incredible how she has far bigger expenses to tackle than clipping coupons on her rent, yet he is forceful about getting her to clip coupons on her rent. Amazing how the dynamics escaped him: she was paying $900 and there was a mold problem, her concern was to move and not repeat the mold issue and the way to do that was to accept that the mkt price for rent was probably closer to 1200 than 900, this went totally over Dave's head.
This is the same man who advised a woman, who was wrestling with the morality of her predicament, to sell a house infested with roaches (i think it was roaches) to a new set of unsuspecting buyers, in order to escape the unsafe and worthless house she owned.

I make 39k a year, family of 5. and We still find a way to save. Its all in the mindset, income should be more than bills. If It doesnt, move states or do something different. That being said, im 24. My car is paid off, roof over my head, food in my families stomachs, still go sometimes, and clothed. Dont let social media glorify all these things you dont need. live humbly, even when you start making more. And before someone tries to comment, yes, I am going to school for my BS (and im nearly done).

$900 a month that's clean...lol, Dave I love you but you honestly need to get in touch with reality of rental markets. In Atlanta anything sub $1000 is most likely going to be in A.) A not so great area, or B.) Somewhere that will be 20-30 miles away from your job and you'll spend 3-4 hours a day in traffic. Average rent for 1BR in Atlanta right now is around $1300-1400 a month. There is very high demand and most places that were even around $1000 even 20 miles out from the city are now jacking their rates up to $1200+ and are getting it at 99% occupied because so many people are moving here and there is a housing shortage.

Incase you missed it, his point explicitly was that just because one makes a significant amount of money, doesn't mean they'll know how to manage it. Take football and basketball athletes for example; millionaires that'll be broke by 30

Bernie Mat but you also probably would make way more than $30k in NYC. Also I paid $750-$775 for a room in Astoria from 2010-2015 and I’m sure it’s still possible if you find the right spot or move more inward in queens or Brooklyn. You just need roommates.
