I have a small breeding colony of bluefins outdoors in a 300-gallon stock tank. I put them in mid-winter. In the spring they spawned several times before it got hot. There is and an assortment of young fish different of sizes. The young ones will eat flake food but they are not enthusiastic about it. They will pick at it until it is gone. I rarely see the adults. They stay down near the bottom and the tank is full of plants. I can find them at night with a bright light. I have the least killies too. A lot of them. They are hard to catch because they are so small but they eat just about anything I feed them that doesn't sink to the bottom. I put pigmy sunfish in the 300-gallon tank too. I used to see them once in a while but now the tank is full of plants and I never see them. When I could see them they would hide as soon as they spotted me. I'm in Tallahassee Florida.
I'm curious, do the Bluefin Killifish live naturally in Tallahassee? I ask because I have a 750-gallon Koi pond in my backyard and I "stumbled upon" 20 Bluefins at a plant store of all places.....they said that a water plant shipment arrived and there must have been eggs because they had about 20 Bluefin Killifish. They gifted them to me and I threw them into my pond and now I have 70! I'm worried about the coming winter ... it gets as low as 30' and 40s here...just like Tallahassee. Is your tank heated? Do Bluefin live in the area in the wild? Thanks!
I own some bluefins myself and they are quite vulnerable to body flukes and new tank syndrome. If you can solve these problems, you’ll have some BEAUTIFUL fish.
I have some super picky eaters as well, before they would only eat live foods I am mediately tried bug bites and they took to it instantly you might want to try that it’s worth a shot and it’s not too expensive.
Nice! I caught one of these netting in the creek behind my house here in texas! Took me so long to find out what it is. I was thinking it was a Blackstripe topminnow until i continued my research and found out i have a female Blufin Killifish. I keep netting back there and setting up DIY minnow traps to try and find the male but I just keep getting tilapia or molly's lol. So jealous you found a whole school!
I’ve got a handful of these guys, very cute although the male I have started squaring off against my male and female mollies so I had to make a dedicated tank for them
I've seen these fish around my area in Florida like 20years back. You'd be amazed on what you can get in lakes in florida if you just scoop along the weeds close to the bank
I'm in SWFL and we have plentiful canal systems, I'm planning a collection trip to several local spots. After watching your collection video with Cory I've been inspired to go out again... I've had some pretty interesting things come in on wild collected plants. Some good some pretty gnarly 😅
That’s awesome! Keep getting out there, so many plant and fish species to find and learn about. Down south there you guys have some interesting non-native/invasive species as well
I too have a few Bluefin Killies and hope to get some more. I also have Flagfish and they got bigger than I was expecting, but they are gorgeous fish. Least Killi and Golden top Minow are two I'd like to find, but I am always on the hunt for more stuff. We have a pond outside my work next to a baseball field where I fish sometimes at lunch here in SW FL. They have Mollies, Bluefin, Brook Silverside, Least Killifish, Flag Fish, Cichlids, Gar, and much more. Thanks for the video, when I told people I was out catching aquarium fish they thought I was crazy. My kid and I were out last night and I caught a new male Bluefin.
I have been very lucky so far with my native fish keeping. I have a 55 gallon with a baby bluegil and Tadpole Madtom catfish that are both native to the Wabash River in Indiana, However I decided to buy them from an online breeder rather then collect. Also the president of my local fish club gifted me with two Rainbow Shiners that were collected in Alabama.. those fish are cool to watch eat.. they hit flake foods harder then I have seen major predators attack live food.
They are one of my favorites, aside from the flagfish, they are truly amazing fish and sadly underappreciated by fish keepers, thanks for sharing one of Florida's gems!
I have had some in a small fishpond along with goldfish. Not a good combination for production but they have persisted for several years. Mine will eat flake food, and will attack goldfish pellets. When mosquito season comes around they really like the larva. As for collecting locally, I am in California and nothing can be collected here.
You have them in an amazing set up, a well seasoned tank, lots of weedy type plants. Yes, we do have wild populations of these in NC, and also the least killies, heterandria formosa. It's so awesome to see them and be able to identify them. Good luck with your project and collecting. 👍💕👍
I've caught goldensided top minnows (have a whole colony I adore), pygmy sunfish (hardest to feed), least killis (love these guys!) Blue fish killis, and pygmy killi fish (hardest to find so far), and tadpole madtoms! Dipnetting is something me and my boys love to do!
@@WildFishTanks yes! It's very important. The pygmy sunfish have been the hardest I've ever kept! Goodluck collecting and I can't wait to see what happens next in the fish cave.

Just picked up a pair of these at a lfs out of the ghost shrimp tank. Shy little things and the male isn't super colored up yet but I absolutely love them. Hopefully my blue dreams don't get munched
@@WildFishTanks little update, not exactly shrimp safe lol. I got a group off of aquabid so I have around 10 but my blue dream colony shrank rather rapidly and all guppy fry have disappeared. Awesome fish but very predatory towards shrimp and fry. May need to separate the killi fry from the adults to raise them.
I was thinking that these were bass i live in califonia and i have a outdoor pond, i dont know how it got introduced because no one has stocked them there
Just found your channel! Been wondering how best to feed my wild-caught bluefin killifish. What kind of Repashy did you find they liked Right now they are all just munching on whatever they find in the lake-foraged substrate, but it would be great if they like a store-bought food, since they aren't taking to the flakes.
The Florida Flag Fish and the Pygmy Sunfish would be great additions to your collection. If they were sold as a "cool water" fish from southern Argentina, they'd be super popular. I only know 4 or 5 native fish and those are two of them. Good luck on your next collecting 'trip'. As for me, I'm in the desert... what's a lake or a river???
Wow Ryan those are super beautiful. When i was younger and would fish in local streams near Miami i.e. southern Florida we would see a lot of micro crabs. Did you encounter any and would you ever consider collecting and keeping them?
I purchased Least Killifish from Quin's and they sent me these by mistake. They seem super frail and not very lively fish, despite how cool they look. I have naturalpond snails in my aquarium and they dont seem to he eating them. It would he great if they would reduce their numbers, but it doesnt appear to he happening. Im hoping mine survive. More than half died in two days upon shipping due to obvious wasting disease.
In IL. all you need is a fish license to collect. I kept a Blue Gill, and a Yellow Bull head cat that was caught out of Kickapoo State Park near Danvlle IL for several years. Loved those two fish.
You can do least killifish in a 10g and these should do well in a 10g also. There are quite a few other native species to Florida that should do well in a 10g also

Those bluefins are so pretty. There's another nice killi in your neck of the woods - Leptolucania ommata.
Ive only seen those and the pygmy sunfish out in Kissimmee around islands of floating grasses.. amazing to find in a sea of fish..
I had a pair of these appear in my tank out of nowhere. Assuming their eggs were on some plants
When I was out collecting plants a few fry had gotten stuck in algae that got picked up with one of the plants I got
Amazing native fish. I’ll have to find some when I visit FL the fall. 👍

They spread very easily through eggs riding in the plants.
