At the time, journalists mentioned a famous moment when they first saw Ali stand next to Sonny Liston... The idea was that Liston was the bigger stronger guy, and Ali was the skinny, pretty boxer... But then they met at the center of the ring to touch gloves, and everyone saw that the "skinny" Ali was not only taller but had comparably wide shoulders.

It's not verified that Bruce Lee actually said this. It's just hearsay of hearsay. This was what Robert Clouse (Enter the Dragon director) said in a book written many years after Lee's death that Bruce Lee said to Bolo Yeung (Bad muscled guy in Enter the Dragon) when he visited Bruce at Golden Harvest Studios. As Robert Clouse was a noted bs artist, the same guy who spread around a false rumor that Bruce Lee wanted to kill Bob Wall after an accident on set involving a glass bottle that cut Bruce's hand, and the fact that he just didn't like Bruce Lee very much, I take this particular claim with a pinch of salt.

To anyone who questions this, you've gotta see Ali vs Liston and Ali vs Frazier and Ali vs Foreman.
Ali is a picture perfect athlete who's missing nearly no important attribute. He's not the strongest but he was knocking everyone out in his prime. He has sufficient power, and more than enough to beat Bruce Lee. He's a heavyweight, the most heavy weightclass there is. And also Ali has reflexes, footwork, defensive speed, offensive speed, stamina, chin, and heart.
Even in an unfavorable stylistic matchup, you cannot understate how much damage Ali is able to absorb. The only standout characteristic from Bruce Lee is that he can kick. If Ali fought someone who excelled in grappling, that'd be a different story. But someone who is very light and we just add kicking? That doesn't add much.
Above all else, Ali can be called a real fighter. He's been in the ring with people who had violent intentions and the actions that went with that.

Someone as big as Ali wouldn’t be able to move in the same way or have the same sort of speed that Bruce Lee had.
What Bruce could do, due to his weight and size, is far more impressive than anything Ali could do.
We are talking about a guy who was 5 ft 7 1/2 that could hit as hard as a heavyweight, move like an Olympic fencer and kicked like a horse.
There is less than 1% of guys his size and weight that has these sort of attributes. It’s incredibly rare. This is why there are so many naysayers about Bruce Lee. You just don’t see guys this size with these sort or attributes, you might see someone who is fast, or maybe hits hard, but not someone who has all of these qualities combined.
And he didn’t compete in sport, so you have to understand this is someone who training was geared completely for survival and not scoring points.
It’s a combination of things. Genetics and training like a fanatic 25/30 hours a week for years on end, training in such a way as to train the muscles used to execute the movement/technique more efficiently and explosively.

A fight like this already happened in the 70's. A catch wrestler fought Ali in shooto. He spent most of the time on his back, kicking Ali's legs and it ended in a draw. Grappling would be Bruce's best chance, and a well-rounded grappler couldn't get it done. A speed advantage is also a physical advantage though. Lawrence Kenshin has a vid about a Thai boxer who destroyed giants. One of the fights, both guys were doing the right thing. Thai fighter was throwing roundhouse to head, bigger guy anticipated it, started throwing an overhand right, before the thai guy started kicking, but he still didn't make it fast enough. He took the kick to the dome, with all the added momentum of his own punch, got KO'd. Bruce's chances would be higher than 0%, but to say higher than 50% is straight dellusion.

As a welterweight, I boxed against a cruiserweight once. We were both 6' tall and I had a reach advantage. For the majority of the first round, I was able to stay out of range and tag him repeatedly. Near the end of the round, he realized that there was literally no way for me to knock him out and just walked me down, and I saw a right hand that was coming over the top of my guard, and the next instant I experienced was standing back up. I had the same experience, only I was featherweight and the guy I sparred with was middleweight. He was only a few inches taller than me. Tagged him a few times in the first round because since I was lighter, I was faster. And then he finally decided to power through (I mean he was holding back), I only saw an over hand right at the last second and I was down. It only took one punch. I got hit by guys around my weight before, I can pretty much hold up. And I was knocked down by a guy my weight before as well, but being punched by someone way heavier was different. The world was literally spinning when I got hit.

The “strikers chance” would give Bruce Lee a chance… but Ali would win 9 times out of 10 due to physical size, strength, experience fighting many 15 round boxing matches against a variety of opponents AND the fact that people forget that Ali himself was a highly skilled expert martial artist in his own right.

Purely speculating here, but in a straight boxing match I 100% agree Ali takes it. And even in kickboxing/Muay Thai- style match 100lbs and 7 inches is a hell of a hurdle to overcome.
MMA I think the gap closes a little further. I could see Bruce Lee deciding to focus entirely on leg kicks, throws, and submissions in his training camp and catching Ali with something he's never seen before, BUT, I could also see Bruce declaring beforehand that he's going to knock Ali out with a kick or something equally wild, and then getting locked into a sub-optimal strategy.
Street fight I think might actually be Lee's best bet. As you pointed out, Lee would absolutely embrace the Dale Gribble mentality. He'd be biting, throwing things, picking up improvised weapons, using gymnastics and parkour BS to maneuver to high ground. And I think with his life at stake Lee would be less likely to showboat but Ali would be less likely to view a guy Lee's size as a serious threat.
If I had to go gambler's odds I'd give 30/1 in Ali's favor in a boxing match, 10/1 or 7/1 in a kickboxing match (depending on specific ruleset), somewhere between 5/1 and 2/1 for an MMA fight (depending on what kind of strategy the two of them implemented for their pre-fight training); and 1/1 in the street fight. Mostly because I see Bruce Lee as being more likely to shank somebody with a broken bottle than Muhammad Ali.

That makes sense. Bruce Lee grew up in a gang, street fighting. I doubt they were doing weigh-ins or anything before they squared up, so I doubt a size difference would be anything new to him. But if you take away the myth of Bruce Lee in a street fight, which in itself is very chaotic, where one punch decides everything, and you have to survive being attacked by Muhammad Ali, if you've ever been in a street fight, then you know that high kicks and others attractive moves too often fail in a fight of a few seconds. I really think that Bruce Lee would have a chance against Muhammad Ali, he would have a chance in all formats except boxing, but again you have to be realistic, on the street and in MMA, Bruce Lee would have to have very good tactics and sense to emerge victorious, especially on the street.

Another factor, not mentioned,in Ali’s favour is full contact combat experience. He is used to getting hit and has a very good chin. Bruce Lee was not. Maybe he had some experience taking shots during training, but traditional martial arts had a tendency to not have full contact sparring. That is one of the reasons traditional martial arts masters lose to mediocre mma fighters. They had no experience sparring, especially hard sparring. Mohamed was hit by some of the hardest punchers in the history of planet earth. He did not go down. He is not just some regular big guy. Bruce was a martial artist. Ali was a fighter. According to his students Lee punched like a Heavyweight Boxer, kicked like a Stallion & moved liked an Olympic Fencer. Might I also add that Lee didn't train for much prolonged encounters, for him it was one shot & done; he would only follow up if he had to.
"One motion & he's gone" - Bruce Lee
"Always maintain the attitude of defeating the enemy with one strike." - Miyamoto Musashi [The Book of Five Rings]
"There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare." - Sun Tzu [The Art of War]
"His [Bruce Lee] belief that a fight should not take over two seconds was basic to his discoveries. The longer the fight, the more chance for luck to come into play. Bruce wanted to control the outcome, not hope that he was going to be lucky. One of the most important concepts that Bruce shared with me was that you could become a master of a few techniques, but never a lot. He felt that if you could define the elements of a fight and design techniques to directly overwhelm them, then you were developing the ultimate system. If the total list of techniques did not exceed ten, then becoming a master of them was very realistic." - James Demile
The reason why Bruce was so distraught after his fight with WJM was because of this, Lee was unable to catch WJM who was running away. It took too much time for Lee to win the fight. After understanding the limitations of his "modified Gung Fu," [Modified Wing Chun] Lee switched to "Fencing with hands & feet." [JKD] If you want to get a good idea as to why Lee switched to "Fencing with hands & feet," checkout my playlist titled "Fencing & JKD."
P.S. The 3 primary targets of JKD are eyes, groin, kneecaps & the 3 principles of JKD are simplicity, directness & efficiency. Lee's intention behind his training was to go from point A [weapon] to ponit B [target] as quickly as possible & finish the encounter swiftly. Btw Lee actually took a lot of punishment in a fight in H.K. when he was young, read John Little's book titled "Wrath of the Dragon : the real fights of Bruce Lee" for more information. I think this fight in H.K. was the one where Lee discovered the "reaction lag time."
"He [Bruce Lee] discovered that it is impossible to block the punch of a person standing within arms reach if he doesn't telegraph the move. The same thing applies to kicks thrown within leg reach." - Jesse Glover
"A study of human reaction time shows that it takes too long for a response message to reach the part of the body that should respond if the attacker is within touching distance. Unless the attacker telegraphs, it is impossible to know when the attack is coming, & by the time it is seen it is too late to move out of the way." - Jesse Glover
The average reaction time [to visual stimulus] of a human being is about 0.25 Seconds. If you stand within the touching distance of someone & try to touch them [without telegraphing even if you go slow] that person wouldn't have enough time to react & prevent you from touching him. Also if the roles were reversed & you had to prevent the other person from touching you the result would be the same. Now this is what is called the "reaction lag time."
Sorry for the long comment, Cheers!👍

I think without gloves, no holds barred is Bruce Lee's best scenario and it's probably 40/60 for Bruce. The sheer size difference combined with the fact that Ali is WAY faster than a heavyweight has any right to be is a tough combination to overcome.
Still knockout power is a real thing and Bruce Lee is extremely fast. He can deliver a knuckle or a heel where it needs to be with incredible speed and timing. There's always a chance and that environment is as far from what Ali has been training for as possible (terrain, equipment, rules etc).
I think if pride had been around in the 70s Bruce Lee would have become famous for cleaning up the 145 division and revolutionized sports nutrition a decade or two earlier.

    Muhammed Ali advantages:
    Heavier
    Taller
    More powerful
Had a speed of a middleweight
    Great range control
    Was a outside fighter
    Longer reach
    Bruce Lee advantages:
    Better weapon arsenal
    Super fast
    Was lightweight
Seeing these stats, I would say Bruce Lee probably has the same speed level as Muhammed Ali maybe even significantly higher than Muhammed Ali, now if Bruce got close enough to Ali he can chop up those legs with leg kicks which would make Ali unable to fight properly, however Ali was great with his range control and was a outside fighter which meant he would not let his opponents get close to him. Ali has a longer reach making him able to hit Bruce Lee more and Bruce would have to be strategic to get close to him.
In my opinion Muhammed Ali wins, he was more powerful and is heavier and taller than Lee. He has great range control making it impossible for Lee to attack his legs as he would keep getting hit with those punches.

When you are smaller, the long range strikes like kicks become quicker. The nearest target for kicking is closer: opponent's knee instead of abdomen and thigh, and the liver and solar plexus are closer to shoulder height for punching reach.
You're also moving less mass: change direction quicker, and spend less energy during the distance game, which can drag on as long as you want with no rounds or judge's scorecard.
Ali would still easily win unless he goofed. Size is a big advantage, but not so huge as some people think. Especially in wide open spaces. I say this as someone who has learned the frustrations of sparring with highly skilled and athletic smaller guys.

Putting Bruce Lee against ANY pro-fighter (or even a modern amateur fighter) is a colossal mismatch. But for some ridiculous reason people keep putting him up against some of the best fighters ever. Nothing whatsoever in Bruce Lee's skillset or experience would prepare him for coming under serious attack from a professional fighter.

Anyone who's sparred or fought competitively knows size and weight matters in a fight. Not only was Muhammad Ali a heavyweight, he was considered one of the "the greatest" (pun intended) heavyweight boxers of all time. Bruce only fought and won at the 1958 Hong Kong Inter-School Amateur Boxing Championships, so he only competed as a young amateur boxer. Case in point, I think we've already learned how a hybrid stylist with amateur boxing experience would fare against a professional boxing champion, at least in a boxing match, with Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor. Indeed, stylistically kicks would be the path to success, but doing that against a GOAT boxer is easier said than done. Bruce Lee's acting career and fighting philosophy were definitely ahead of his time and influenced entire generations of martial arts fans and Asian Americans like myself, but I do think people exaggerate his legacy and abilities to the point where he seemed superhuman, which is delusional.

1 well timed and well placed leg kick ,(without pads) can end a boxers career. bruce had exceptional speed power and accuracy. Weight dose def matter but not as much as some ppl think. Both of these fighters are great but I have to give it to Bruce. Yes Yanoki kicked him in the legs b4 but let's face it. Yanoki was a fake wrestler, not the world's father of mixed martial arts. Also that man was only allowed to kick Ali while he was on the ground?! Give me a break. Those kicks that Ali endured injured Ali's legs badly Ali even says so after the fight with Yanoki. So really think about what a master of kicks could of done to him while standing up and throwing that perfect sweet chin music directly to the knee cap or throat. the fight is over as fast as it begins.

Either way, it is plausible that Bruce Lee could grapple with Ali. However, Ali did fight a Japanese wrestler much larger than Bruce and I'm not even sure Bruce could take Ali down to use the grappling because of his size and how evasive Ali has been known to be. Bruce Lee is excellent at covering distance though. The bottom line; I have no clue the fight never happened. My gut says Ali because he just needs to land one shot and Bruce has so much more that he has to do to win than Ali does.

I personally do not believe Bruce beat WJM. The whole story of how Bruce took too long to defeat Wong so he went out and learned boxing, ultimately to create JKD, is farcical to me. More likely is that WJM kicked Bruce's ass, after which, disillusioned, he went on to learn boxing and blended it with Wing Chun. This makes sense because as great as Wing Chun is, and it is great, it lacks mobility and its strikes are not as powerful as other fighting systems.

Bruce lee didn’t need to grapple because of how good his mobility and footwork was.
A years prior Bruce had a fight known as the YMCA fight which is very telling of his capabilities against a Japanese black belt in judo and karate called Yoichi Nagachi.

Yeah, I mean you can have an argument on Prime Tyson vs Prime Ali, but Bruce Lee was a fighter second, actor first.
Not to say that he wouldn't be able to scrap, but comparing him to a professional boxer, who lives, eats, breathes and sleeps while thinking about the best way to throw hands. Not to mention the weight and reach advantage, AND considering how extremely mobile Ali is. The only way (assuming a sanctioned match) for Lee to win would be by points and keeping away.
For a street fight, Ali will either corner Lee, or Lee would just have to run.
Lee could get off a few good hits... but for a guy to takes punches from heavyweights for a living... there's no guarantee that it would land solidly and slow Ali down enough vs his punches.
