    Just to clarify, the 512 qubit D-Wave quantum computer was not able to outperform a common laptop computer in solving optimization problems, contrary to this video's claim. What the scientists did was they gave both computers several problems of various size and compared the growth of solving time as a function of problem size for both computers. The solving time function for the D-Wave computer grew more slowly than the same function for the laptop, so by some projections the D-Wave computer should be faster than a laptop for very large problems (for which they will need more than 512 qubits). This speculated outperformance is contested and some think that the growth of the D-Wave function was only smaller because the quantum algorithm had some sunk cost even for the smallest problem size. It is difficult to predict the performance of a quantum algorithm other than by simulation with either a very very fast supercomputer OR another working quantum computer of appropriate size.

    • @planeshaperman
      @planeshaperman 9 лет назад

      Yes but for the D-Wave to be worth anything has to eventually beat existing supercomputers, and the relevant part is the growth function anyway.

    • @OFfic3R1K
      @OFfic3R1K 9 лет назад

      Insurgent Science it is not simply a new technology, quantum computing itself is still very young. We are yet to see major breakthroughs and to get to that point, we have to experiment and try to implement what we have already learned. This is the world's first quantum computer, many people will even argue if it is a "real" quantum computer. Either way, there is a lot of potential in this theory.
      Just think about LHC, people thought that it was insane, risky, stupid and that it would kill us all. Yet, just a couple of days ago they confirmed existence of a pentaquark. Do you remember its first launch? As far as I remember it was quite disappointing and yet a couple of years later, after a lot of improvements we are successfully using it to confirm theories about our universe.
      There is of course a downside. D-Wave machines are being sold as if they were a breakthrough, when in reality they are not even close to being as good as modern supercomputers.

You can wear a mask but they still know you are doing things. Just not exactly "who" you are. You want privacy. Do it behind closed doors away from all tech. No phones. No tech. No internet. Soundproof. Closed. That's the only privacy you've ever been able to have. Embrace you traded privacy for a better and easier life. You could always leave if you want to. I like Google, but they REALLY need to consider privacy. I mean, think about it. Every single android collects your location and tracks wherever you go,
    Google pretty much knows almost everything that everybody looks up on the internet, all of their apps collect data about your device to, and I quote "Improve their apps", and they own lots of stuff that other people made (Android, RUclips.etc).
    Seriously, they could probably take ogre the world if they really wanted too.

    • @Dookie6891
      @Dookie6891 9 лет назад +4

      I like to think they're utilizing the tiny "bits and bytes" of information from us to do some good for the world, rather than take on an Orwellian approach. The individual can't understand the complexities of the world, but an intelligent network of information and people such as Google has the ability to see the flaws of the world better than anyone. All you have to do is have some shred of belief that people are inherently altruistic.

    It's insane how this generation LOVES and is so loyal to a company. These comments where people invest so much of their emotional self in an operating system, a phone, a search engine, or a brand. These are the true sheep. Google sheep, Apple sheep, Samsung sheep or Microsoft sheep. If you love your technology more than humanity you are in a bad place. Stop loving companies over people. Don't claim to believe in choice when you hate alternatives. That's what a "sheep" is.

    • @MankindDiary

      ***** Technology IS the humanity. Technology is our product, is our greatest achievement. Be loyal to a company is just like be loyal to our country. It's same thing.

      Icaro_JJP 1. Why on Earth everyone would become obese? The only nation that have serious problems with obesity is America, the same nation which thinks that universe is 6.000 years old...
      2. Big natural disasters... Have you heard about geoengineering?
      3. We rely on machines since XIX century and we don't see any problems because of that.
      4. If we will die, and robots will inherit the Earth, that will only means that they are better than us, they are better adapted to survive. I have no problem with accepting that. Why you have?

    Outstanding video ! The creators of Google are not just two ordinary intelligent guys, they are also astonishing businessmen. At a crucial point in Googles early growth they flew around the world having meetings to convince companies to use their search engine rather than their competitors. I think this was ones of their most defining moments because it cemented their foothold in the search market and simultaneously crushed their competition.
