I want to add Dave I have had my Marshall MG 100 FX since 2009 and not one single issue with it..i have also used it a long side a Marshall JCM900 and that set up sounded brilliant ..and the MG 100 FX is most certainly better than any DSL Marshall...keep the videos Rolling really enjoy them..
@@recipoldinastyi just modified a fender double footswitch(channel/effects)to work with this amp, one switch for clean/crunch and the other for od1/od2, works perfectly and cost me 5$😁
Awesome video. I have this same amp for about 8 years, but I've never used it often bc I don't like the clean channel, it sounds too dark/closed, even with the treble knob high and the bass low. I guess this is because of the bad stock speaker. Recently I started using it with a Zoom G5n pedalboard and brought it back to stages. It sounds great using amp simulations, it's loud, powerful and reliable. Thanks for the review!
Sorry for resurrecting such an old video. But I have the chance to buy either this MG100FX in head version, a Joyo Jackman or a Peavey Bandit red stripe (most likely China). Either of them for 100 bucks. I already like the Bandit and the Jackman and I'm mostly interested in just having a good crunch tone. Would you recommend the Marshall at all?
I have the MG 100FX head and the cab it came with I replaced the stock 1 1/2” thin magnet mg celestions with 2 backhawk hp 100s and 2 Invader 50s (from WGS) set in an X pattern Speakers are a game changer and the Gain/Eq I start everything at Max then roll off what I don’t want
Dave usually uses a similar EQ across all his amps, i personally cant stand having 0 treble and gain maxed but that's just me - it sounds super muffled and flat to my ear. I stilled thought he made this amp sound really good! Maybe his ears are extra sensitive to high end :) Still love all his videos
The gain dial is actually gain and volume amp arrived today sounds absolutely amazing used the chorus and it really does bring me straight to cali era Melbourne 2000 green heaven
Dave, do you happen to know if the Marshall MG50GFX sounds exactly like the one you reviewed here? Also how do you think this amp would take a zoom g3xn? And if you could suggest a 50 W to 100 W combo amp for home and garage rehearsal that takes pedals well (except Katana, I refuse to play them). Cheers!
Dave... does it really succeed to its predecessor valvestate? I was looking forward for at least a 12ax7 in the preamp section... because the website mention it supposed to replace the series... just keep in mind I refer to your head MG series for a fair comparison thanks
Hi Dave could you please review the Roland Cube-80gx, which is another affordable and versatile solid state combo amp? Maybe you can get one for a test.
hi dave have you seen the BluGuitar Amp 1. it's all analogue with a micro sized real tube called a nanotube. it's a 100w head with various amp styles designed by Thomas Blug
Hey Dave, this is kind of off topic. I own a plexi but it keeps breaking down, thanks to your videos I'm thinking of trading it for a cr120. My main concern with amps is always headroom. So with the setting you used on your john frusciante tone video,(maxed gain, no treble, bass and middle on 4, master volume on 2 as always) how high can you turn that master volume while maintaining that john cleanish sound? I assume you would have to roll off the gain as you went along. Based on your experience with the plexi you had for a bit which would you say had more headroom? Thanks a lot, love your videos
Hi there. The CR120 is good all the way up on the master. It just gets fatter the louder it goes. I had it at 7 once (Which was a hazard to anyones hearing) and it just sounded huge. Really cannot say enough good thing about it. :)
So Dave, where is this combo made and is it Celestion speakered? (I'm guessing Marshall China)...sounds like you're feeling it as a 5/10 but maybe a 6 to 7 if the speaker is taken out and burnt for a better one.
I would highly recommend you get the ic power amp changed, mine came back on Wednesday and it's better they changed the plug as well but that neck Pickup is just a thin sound, similar to the bypass tone of the wh10v3
Everyone is asking for an MG series comparison mate! Maybe you could compare the different iteration of this serie throughout the years… Personally I’d like to know your opinion on the current head model in production: is it crap or not? And what about the actual 4x12 cab? Is it the same you showed a few years ago? Thanks mate!
Where are those amps you review from ? I mean how do you get them ? Just borrowing and them give them back? Is there any chance of making review for Behringer V-AMPIRE LX1200H in the future? cause i am curious what would you say about that amp indeed. TY for answers. Keep it up! :)
Hi Dave! Could you tell me how can I set up a VOX Valvetronix VT40+ to get a Frusciante clear sound? I can not handle with that, maybe you had an valvetronix series amp, and you have found this sound. ;)
Hi thanks for the video. One question which is your choice and opinion between Marshall MG100HCFX (4x12) and Marshall ValveState 100 (1x12)???. Which one gives more clarity in Hi Gain mode???. Thanks :D
Dave, you have made me a believer about solid state amps. So much that I sold my fender Basebreaker 15. I also bought a Digitech rp1000. Sold it too I Wanted something more user friendly. So I got a boss kazza 100 watt head and 2 12's. I will have to eventually get a used 4x12 cab. Are there good inexpensive one second hand? CHECK THIS OUT!
Same, I've just brought an mg100 dfx and orange cr35, so want the 100 and matching cabs, I'm sure I can get same same sound out of a katana but the orange has a vibe all of its own
Hey Dave, you are right .The old mg is the best sounding . I bought a brand new Mg100Hcfx a year ago , this amp sounded so thin I sent it back ! They just don't make them good anymore ! even the new tube amps don't sound like the old ones ! I just bought a 1984 marshall lead 12 off ebay . This amp sounds really good , Try one sometime, Hey also try a Marshall lead 100 Mosfet ! This thing will blow you away ! I got a 1986 ! Take care my uk friend , gv
I've just bought one of these which looks like new and mine hisses on every setting, even the clean channel. Is this something people with these have to put up with or is there a way to get around it?
With the amp plugged out, just use electrical contact cleaner spray on the dial pots, i..e take the knobs off, spray them ,crank them a few times😂 to clean dust off. Should be no hissing crackling then unless a control needs to be replaced by a tech.
Hey I got an unused one of these and my friends guitarist wants to buy it off me. From the looks of it, it looks like a nice piece of equipment. I would sell for 200 as I dont use it but he want it for 150. What r ur thoughts??
Hey Dave I recently got a DS2 and even though my amp is on the overdrive setting I can't have the level knob on max without it being too loud or feedback like crazy
I have no idea why people think you need to run fuzzes on maximum volume/level. Don't do that. Give yourself a slight boost, but don't blow up your amp, and certainly don't deafen yourself.
you should watch some johan segeborn, great marshall channel, he makes the mg100fx sound amazingly good. his ethos is play things through the right speakers, speakers are the most important part. some of these marshalls get bad reps mainly because of their speakers and some people say they use crappy speakers in low end, cheap "beginner" amps to maintain the magic and mystery of their higher end amps... when in reality you can make practically any amp sound fantastic through the right speakers busting the myth that you have to spend high dollar on one. marshall use shit speakers to maintain a wide market which sucks wealthier people into expensive stuff and caters for people with less money. crappy speakers is clever marketing ploy. people buy cheap as a beginner then upgrade to a "better" one later. so they're spending twice. if anyone has an amp they consider bad or cheap... just change the speakers before buying into the idea that expensive is better.
The FX is darker sounding than the DFX. So yeah I agree the older mg is way better. I have a 15 watt mg with a 10inch speaker and if you crank the clean it sounds almost like a plexi
I'm a bit late in the day for this video....but hoping you can help anyway as you've played around with this amp.....I've just bought the 100w head...but when it comes to gain, bass, middle and treble I can't notice any difference in sound at the lowest volumes I play at....literally no difference at all. are they just weak in those areas and only really noticeable at much higher volume....or am I missing something? Cheers, Chris.
Awesome! I'd also love to hear your thoughts on Vox amps. They're my current amp choice mainly because of how smooth their breakup is, but I want to add another amp to my sound because they get thin in leads sometimes.
Hey Dave, just wondering if u are still planning to do skype lessons? I've been waiting it for awhile but haven't heard anything yet so yeah, let us know! as I'm really keen to learn from u.
In my opinion they dont make an amp today better than the cr120, I have watched you demo alot of amps as well as others on the tuuube as you call it and the cr120 blows them all away hands down.Versatility is the key to an amp and the cr120 has it.
Greetings from Germany...!good Video!...i feel the same(i feel nothing). This wos my first Marshall Amp(MG100FX) and i always dream about an Mashall Amp. So i find a MG 100FX for a realy good price (160€ and it was nearly NEW "99% of time unused"). But it have no good Sound...no feeling...no balance..sometime overpowered & sometimes to low. I think i buy'd the badest Marshall. :( Sorry for my bad english...hafe fun & jam your life
Hello, probably no one is ever gonna read this comment, but in case any body ever once to buy a modern mg50fx (the less watt version of this one): I wont recommend it. I have been using it for about 2 years now and its not unusable, but its just not worth the money. From watching daves channel for a while, I know there are better ones out there for about the same money. The biggest selling point for this one is, that it takes pedals quite well for the price range. But besides that the speakers are really poor and in my opinion most effects (except reverb) don't sound good, not even as starting points. Recently I started recording and there I really noticed that the output of the speakers is extremely weak. It sounds super mooshy. I used a under 100€ Vox amp and it sounds better, no joke. I guess if you use different speakers, like dave in this video, it would not be as bad. But especially the overdrive is very disappointing. No matter how I set the EQ, it either sounds too harsh or too dark and gets totally lost in a mix. I know Dave usually takes a OD1 or dirt channel and I tried it for a while, but they don't get any sound of any guitarist I like out of them, it sounds uncontrolable and I dont manage to get a sweet spot. The only thing that has kind of worked for me is turning the bass way down on the EQ and most of the time also the treble. Also an overdrive panel in front of the amp fixes a lot of the problems. But considering how much time I spent trying to "fix" the amp sound, I think a good amp should just deliver a good sound out of box. Sorry for the long post, but I have spent a lot of time with this amp and got a lot of frustration and I hope this may help someone else
@@saannntii__ I don't know for sure as I have not tried the 100w one. From Daves video I suppose they have some common issues (especially the speakers). Some things may be different, but I think in the need the 100w and 50w one should be about the same, except for the headroom and how the gain reacts

Get your hands on a Marshall 8100 or vs 100. They slay the Mgs. Likewise they are 90s solid state models.
Sounds as good as any amp out there.
What is your opinion on the newer models of this amp? The mgcfx series
I think they pretty much ruined the MG range. The older ones are so much better in my opinion. :)
I've just bought one of these which looks like new and mine hisses on every setting, even the clean channel. Is this something people with these have to put up with or is there a way to get around it?
Noise gate perhaps?
With the amp plugged out, just use electrical contact cleaner spray on the dial pots, i..e take the knobs off, spray them ,crank them a few times😂 to clean dust off. Should be no hissing crackling then unless a control needs to be replaced by a tech.

Does this apply for the 100w version? I mean, the modern one
@@saannntii__ I don't know for sure as I have not tried the 100w one. From Daves video I suppose they have some common issues (especially the speakers). Some things may be different, but I think in the need the 100w and 50w one should be about the same, except for the headroom and how the gain reacts
I'm getting this amp
I wouldn't.
@@thedavesimpson my speaker blowed yesterday, luckily we signed the 3 year warranty card we won't be able to get it fixed until atleast January ish. Do Marshall MG's have Celestion g12s?
