I am mostly a minimalist and never buy luxury I think the biggest factor that keeps me from overconsumption is my concern for the environment and reducing my waste I usually buy secondhand if I can. The most I spend on is kitchen items but I cook pretty much everyday so it's not just for aesthetics and I mostly save since I don't want to be dependent on my job I personally don't like to flash brands and wealth and prefer less vibrant tones and want more natural materials I have a low salary, but a high net worth for my age due to inheritance and coming from money so that may add to my lack of desire to buy status symbols. I don't need people knowing that I have a lot. I bought my purse from target in middle school and 10 years later it's beat up, but does the job
Wow, great analysis. I find that I overspend as a means of control in my life or getting things for a future self i anticipate. Headed in the direction of only buying things I can use now, not in the future and accepting what i cannot control so i don't chase the cheap thrill of shopping to make me feel alive and in control.
I think there is a discrepency here, because having new money doesn't mean that you haven't achieved that step. You can be old money and have less than new money rich, it is a status, you are right, but that doesn't mean that you can't afford the same things. If you are called new money - that means you are wealthy already for the rich to consider where your money is from (from OLD wealth - or NEW business). I think the people you are referring to who are trying to at least attain the rich attire are not wealthy, they just have enough to buy some luxury goods (even if it means saving up for it) - but they don't have the kind of wealth to just walk in a shop and buy something without maxing their creditcard.
Just want to add something, the concept of new money is not new at all. It all started when the British nobility started to loose money, centuries ago, and the merchant class started ti become rich. Not sure if they used to call them new money or if its a modern term, but the concept is still the same
I think it can be, like people spending way over msrp for graphics cards to be able to play the games they want and escape from their 9-5, and companies feed off that to increase profits, different situation but yeah
My sister wants something when she sees it being used by her seniors, but don't look at the same thing twice if i keep it in my shelf. i too usually get influenced by Kpop and Jpop fashion, i really like the cute accessories or outfits, which i didn't knew existed before and can be worn like that. the way it's not usually sold in my country, makes it more noticeable to others. they often try to steal my belongings. i sometimes just give away when they start to attach to feelings with it. but what i want to say is that mimetic desire really do exists !
The thing about being autistic is that we are generally more divorced from memetic desire, we see beauty in our own way and do not experience much external influence. We are usually viewed as strange as we place value on things that are almost incomprehensible to neurotypical people!
During the time I used to overspend it was because I grew up being told no for everything I asked for. So once I could afford things, I went wild.
Damn the same same thing happened to me.
@@anushkabasu7043 I mean it's ok for awhile but I realized where it was coming from.
I think that’ll happen to me when i start gaining money
@@JellyOnAPancakeAyyyy Yea I think it’s normal if you’ve been deprived of what you want for most of your life.
Meeee and unfortunately I’m still in this era

Or a good knockoff

Every time I hear the term new money, i think about all the English class discussions on the Great Gatsby

Oh, many of them don't have a 9-5...

I don't think we're divorced from it, just that the objects of desire are different.
@@Heyu7her3 that’s why I said memetic (like trending/ influenced desire) of course we still want stuff it’s just not what everyone else wants
