I can remember in 1962, that my parents threw us three girls in the 1960 Chevy Parkwood station wagon and drove us from Grand Rapids Michigan to Inyokern California on Route 66 in the month of June. In Oklahoma we stopped at a campground, I think, in a place called Red Rock Canyon. My Dad and my middle sister slept in a tent outside and my oldest sister, my Mom and I slept in the back of the station wagon. My Dad and my middle sister came back to the car when my sister peed in the tent and got Dad all wet. We lost five tires on separate incidents along the way. When we were in Texas someone was passing our car and yelling, "Your Tar" " Your Tar". It took us awhile to decipher the Texas drawl! I can remember stopping in Gallup New Mexico to stop for breakfast at this little cafe. They were so busy with only one waitress and she dropped orange juice right by our table. My mother got up, went into the kitchen, grabbed a mop and some rags and began to clean the floor and the table. She then took the mop and bucket back into the kitchen and began to wait on tables. When she felt the young girl was caught up, we ate our breakfast and moved on to the Petrified forest where it was so hot. We had one of those water bags hanging on the front of the grill and one of those old window air conditioners where you pulled the string an cold air came out. My head was in my mothers lap and she pulled the string and all the cold water came down on my head. So Route 66 was one of my favorite memories at the age of 10 years old and I am 69 years old today. Chuck, Bertha, Janet, Jill and Joy travelled Route 66. Just a note to say we drove across country to visit my Aunt and Uncle in Inyokern California. My Uncle was on a submarine for 19 years serving in the Navy and his 20th year was spent on shore duty at China Lake Naval Weapons base in Ridgecrest California. We moved to the desert in 1964 and I have been a desert rat ever since. Thanks for the memories.
Great memories of yearly trips from Albuquerque to California on Route 66. Painted desert, petrified forest and always in awe that the meteor fell right next to the visitor center at Meteor Crater!! 😊👍😇
As I saw you at the Lincoln Library I saw the dresses Mary Lincoln wore. I read a great book on the relationship of Mary and Elizabeth Keckley a former black slave, and Mary's dress maker. Well worth the read.
Really enjoying watching this. I’m 65 and as a young girl was fascinated with Route 66. Loved the cars from that era. Thanks for taking us along. Best wishes from Glasgow, Scotland.
We did a trip on Route 66 in 1972 in a station wagon with my parents and 5 of us kids. My sister was car sick the entire trip and nobody wanted to sit next to her in case she got sick. Unfortunately she ended up in the worse possible seat for somebody suffering from motion sickness. She was in the rear facing far back seat of the station wagon. It was definitely a trip to remember. My husband and I have gone back and visited several portions of old Route 66. You bring back several childhood memories. As a child we took many a trip from Chicago to Springfield, Illinois on Route 66. Thanks for the smiles and the laughs.
I tell everyone they should drive cross country at least once. If for nothing else just the change in landscape from the East to West is just amazing. I’ve done it 4 or 5 times in a car a couple as a kid in a motorhome and many times in a 18 wheeler. I’d leave tomorrow if I could.
Your Route 66 series has me grasped to every second right to the very end with the cool footage of the nostalgic stops and the coolest narrator by Gary the Gemini Giant!! Next Sunday's video, I'm having a bucket of popcorn and an icy cold soda to complete the experience!!
I am so looking forward to your St Louis edition! Thank you for highlighting all of these historic spots. My bucket list is getting longer because of your blogs.
Over the years my husband and I have developed a taste for road trips. We completed Seattle to San Diego recently and had the best time. After watching just two episodes of your new series, Route 66 has moved to the top of our list. Thank you for introducing us to the joys of this route ❤️
Caleb's comment on the museum & parents "Hope it doesn't take long!". Was spot on! We did the Harley Davidson museum a couple years back and our kids got super impatient after about 90 minutes or so. I read most of it all, but my wife read it all except one room!
We just did a big Route 66 trip and our souvenir Giant was Buck Atom from Buck Atom's Cosmic Curios in Tulsa. I was so impressed with how much of the Mother Road is left but also with some of the new additions.
I love the route 66 trip, someday my wife and i would love to do this route, it will happen! I love Gary, that is so hilarious!! I really love the new voice for Charlie, it is amazing. We had a dog for many years and she still has a voice in our house, just awesome!!
Hi Y'all! We love your videos and great adventurous spirit. We have been watching your channel for 4 years and you were one of the inspirations for us to quit our jobs and take a chance to live out a new adventure. If you head down to the Florida Keys one day give us a shout. Would love to collaborate with you for a "Keysie" video from your perspective, by water and/or land. Our channel is small but it's just a documentary of our adventures here in the Keys. We plan on doing a lot more RV traveling in 2022 so maybe we will see you on the road! Keep up the positive vibes!
My husband’s sister and her company sculpted all the human figures at the Lincoln Museum . The details of the sculpts and their authentic wardrobe are incredible .
Route 66 is the ultimate tourist travel adventure. I can't wait until we can go. Looks like You guys are having a great time. The vintage Americana stuff is a blast.
It's nice to see your home state seen through someone else's eyes. Sometimes you forget the little cool things around the state. Enjoy the rest of your trip. Loving the series. You guys are awesome.
When you get to Santa Monica pier, don't forget to get your certificate to show you've completed the drive! And you should abandon the RV for one night when you get to The Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari NM. A real 1930s nostalgia stay. We took our time doing our route 66 trip and it has been one of the highlights of our travels - we tried always to drive on the original road when we could, don't care for interstates, the whole route is full of fascinating places. Go for a meal in the Roadkill Cafe in Seligman AZ with its amusingly named menu items like Swirl of Squirrel or Splatter Platter!! There are so many places it would take all day just to list them!
Covered wagon was the first RV Trish. Also great job driving the Bird. You should explain to Trish when you "run out of air" on the air brakes they will come on and stay on until the air builds up again, nice unless you are in the middle of an intersection. Stay safe and healthy.
Your new book will tell you the best way to stay off the interstate highways. The people are awesome. We did the route on our Honda Goldwings. Stop and talk to the people, especially at the museums and shops. It is awesome and kind of sad looking at the empty buildings. We want to do it again now that we are both retired. Probably do it in an older car for the real feel, lol. Love your bus.
Thanks Mark & Trish for all the shows that you have done for the RV community, we have learned a lot, watching your shows. This is our 1st year watching and Rv traveling. Hopefully will get to meet some day in the near future in our home town Flagstaff,Az ~Will Just Keep Your Daydream
If I may say, my wife and I can have an upside down day and then we turn your channel on and the bright sunshine from your wonderful family makes everything that much better. You guys are so much fun to watch and your Toys for Tots program is so wonderful, especially during some of these strange times that are affecting many in a negative financial way. YOU GUYS ROCK! Keep the great times coming. We just finished the route 66 trip and your perspective has shown many things that we missed along the way. THANK YOU AND STAY SAFE. GOD BLESS TEXAS / USA
Gary: "I'm OK. Ooohh look at the pretty clouds" The book you picked up Tricia was a great way to find all the hidden gems of Route 66. I used the same book when I began my travels!
Having pilot-trainee spouse jump straight from parking lot to public roads? You’re a braver man than I shipmate (not for her technical handling of the rig, or any threat to life & limb, but for fear of the potential harm in my sleep if I don’t phrase that constructive criticism “constructively” enough 😎). Looks like an awesome trip!
We stayed at The Texas Route 66 RV Park in Shamrock, TX. Roomy full hookup campsites. There is a dog park adjacent to their sheep and donkeys in their barn. Elvis ate at The Tower Building (in Disney CARS Flo's Diner) where we had waffle cone ice cream. Tallest ware Tower in Texas.. We had steak at Mesquite Ranch House (GREAT FOOD) just off the interstate
Thanks for the video. Route 66 is on my bucket list. I grew up on route 66, Foothill Blvd in Fontana, Ca. Give Fontana a honk for me when you drive throught.
There is something special about driving on a portion of the actual old road in your RV/bike/Skokie/whatever. Driving out of your way, adding an hour or two to your trip...totally worth it!
Ya’ll missed the famous cozy dog drive in on Route 66 and you also missed Lincoln’s Tomb which isn’t on Route 66 but is a must see and the old state capitol building
So great to see the latest, greatest RV gadget in use here on the KYD bird...a bungy cord for gas pedal. Any particular brand you recommend? LOL-love you guys.
We love watching you and hope to cross paths someday. I just retired after 26+ years working in the prison system here in NYS. We are doing small summer trips but going to be selling our house within the next two years. We have a brand new 2021 3500 ram Cummins and our 2021 keystone cougar fifth wheel and enjoy the tips such as harvest host, route 66 etc.
Last year for Christmas I got my husband some RV toilet paper and the white KYD hat. He just informed me while we were watching this that it is a ladies hat. (crap emoji goes here). We just got our first RV in August and hope to see you guys out on the road sometime.
Ha ha, I'm loving this series. We need more Gary and Charlie dialogue please! And Trish, I know you're throwin' around the y'all's like you're from Tennessee, but in Illinois, especially down by Pontiac, we say "yous guys" along with Root 66. We drove much of the interstate version of Route 66 this summer from Chicago to Flagstaff and I wondered why they didn't name I-44 and I-40, I-66! Kind of a shame.
Lovin this Route 66 season. We may need to put it on our bucket list. Y’all make it so fun & interesting. See y’all next Sunday. Safe travels, WOOT! WOOT!!! 😊🇺🇸
Loved this episode. Thanks for getting back to just taking us along with you wherever you are! As much as I love you guys, I get tired of the product videos, advice, fixing stuff, etc. I want to see places you are staying, things you are doing @ camp, places you eat, places you visit, people you meet, etc. I just love feeling like we're traveling together, not going to my Sunday night lecture. ❤
Route 66 is going to be a very interesting adventure, between Gary, Charlie, and their shenanigans 😜, seeing all the old historical sites, teaching Tricia how to navigate the bus, this is getting better with every episode, hang on here we go...
I really, really, really hope you can walk a bit on the original 66 in Petrified Forest Nat'l Park...and also on that stretch around Seligman with the Burma-shave signs. Have fun!!!
I remember old route 66 as a little girl traveling from CA to NY and back many times. I drove on parts of it in 1974. It was a fun road to travel on except if you wanted to pass a slow moving vehicle ahead of you..
I pause this video while your giving Trish driving instructions that it takes air pressure to release the brakes so when you mentioned that you were worried about being on that big hill and air pressure getting low, well if air pressure drops it will apply the brakes, so if buzzer goes off while traveling down the road you’ve got a problem, you need to know at what psi the buzzer comes on and what psi the brakes come on automatically. You can do that while pumping the brakes sitting in a parking lot with them released and watch the gauges.
Someone has probably already said this somewhere, but I thought I would just in case they haven’t. Make time while you’re in Amarillo to spend time in Palo Duro Canyon. If I remember correctly, y’all stayed only one night the last time you came through. PDC is the second largest canyon in the US. Second only to the Grand Canyon. The biggest difference is that you can drive down into Palo Duro. It’s really beautiful and worth the time spent. Loving the series!
Lincolns' grave is also a good POI in Springfield, very moving. Most of his family is buried there. You can walk inside the tomb to read some history, and it's free.
My husband and I love your videos! Have you thought about putting a magnet on the bottom of Gary? That way he's not constantly falling over and you can easily take him off the dash to "see" the sights. Safe travels and can't wait until your next segment!
Happen to be staying in Saint Robert Missouri. Our Grandson has Army bootcamp graduation on Friday here at Fort Leonard Wood. Anyway we got to go into Uranus off Route 66. Wow, if you have not stopped in yet, you should. Have a safe journey...
I loved Springfield and the Lincoln Museum. The presentation was awesome! My son loved it. When you said Springfield I was hoping you’d go to the museum. Very educational. I don’t have an RV or camper but I’m hoping to travel like that again one day. Meanwhile I see the country with y’all! Thanks!
Found out something yesterday. We went to Apache Village RV and bought a Class A Jayco. They are located on Route 66. It is on Dunn road Hazelwood. North side of St. Louis. So, if you cross the river and Arch is on your right, you missed part of the route.
I’m a retired truck driver with 43 years of experience driving different kinds of trucks and repaired them myself. I was most concerned about using the bungee cord to pull up the accelerator when it’s stuck. This won’t work in emergency situations. Highly recommend you get it fixed immediately. It sounds like it is a broken throttle return spring and check the bottom of the pedal to make sure it isn’t getting hung up on the floor mat or something may be under it. We have watched ALL your videos and love your positive attitude and all your travels.
I still remember When you were first in Santa Fe , New Mexico eating chili burgers, first time I saw your adventure! I was born in Santa Fe ! I RV as a traveling CT Technologist! Thanks for your adventures! Safe travels, Sam Anaya
Another great video. You're losing air because your air brake system has a leak. When you apply the service brake with the spring brake released you should lose not more than 4 psi over 2 minutes. Plus the Bird should maintain its air overnight.
My parents moved from st. louis to Phoenix the summer of 1963, ( I was 2) we drove route 66 in a 1955 mercury(at least that's what they told me) In the 80's I lived in Weatherford Oklahoma, there is a route 66 museum in Clinton Oklahoma 20 miles west. I am enjoying these episodes, thanks for sharing your lives with us!!
So sad, the white DREAM hats are already sold out :( Really enjoying this series!!! "Easy on the ....." -Gary "He's torn apart, he's beside himself..."
This is great fun. Don't skip a thing. BTW I just bought one of your hats. I need a hat like i need another hole in my head. At one time I had over 200. Anyway, I bought the hat because you donate to Toys for Tots. I am a 74 yr old Marine and love that you are supporting Toys for Tots. Semper Fi.
I am loving the Route 66 videos and looking forward to more. I bought the knit hat last year and love it!! I also noticed Trish eating a Perfect bar...those are my favorite protein bars. Peanut Butter and Chocolate chip peanut butter are my 2 favorites. Love you guys!!!!
Tricia I'm jealous as you were giving Charlie a hug. On out way home from visiting relatives in Illinois we stopped at Lincoln's home and went through the tour. This was back in the 60's of which a lot of what you showed was not there. Just a regular house on a road in a town. So enjoyed seeing the new stuff. This is a lot of fun so enjoying this adventure. Thanks Please give Charlie a hug from me as he is so loveable. Stay safe.
The 2021 KYD Hats are now available but in limited quantity so don't wait! shop.keepyourdaydream.com We appreciate your support and together making an impact with Toys for Tots! If you're just here for the episode, it starts at 3:22 - Gary
HI there! just retuned from a Great Camp Site Elijah Clark State Park outside of Evans Ga. Beautiful water front sites. Fabulous 4 days! Just bought hats for me and for Christmas presents! Thank you allowing us to go along with you! We are constantly learning this 5th wheeler just starting out in our 70's! Never too old to start enjoying life!
Just ordered another hat. I wore my KYD khaki truckers hat around the Chili Cook-Off in Terlingua, and while camping up in Big Bend N.P. a couple weeks ago. Stylin’
Grew up in Winslow, saw the interstate come through there in the early 60’s. Left just as the Eagles put out the song “take it easy” and standin on a corner in Winslow Arizona, that put us on the map for sure. Be safe, enjoy the ride.
You could of gone into The Old Capital, which was near by the Museum, the railroad station where the big Lincoln-Douglas debate and the same place they brought his body back from DC to bury, which you should of went to his tomb also. Then about 20 miles Northwest of Springfield, is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood, Lincoln's New Salem.
Great Route 66 vids! We crossed over 66 while driving to Denver, while driving on Route 36, the original pony express route, but almost unused now ( they have a museum too!
I was born and raised in Illinois and Route 66 has always been legendary but I had no idea how popular it remains. I think my wife and I need to follow the route on one of our trips. Gary is awesome and really adds character to a wonderful video, this trip has been fantastic, look forward to STL.
Brakes release only when you have 60 psi or more of air pressure , never a bad idea to chaulk wheels when parked on a incline but if and when air pressure goes down it will set the parking brake . Just don't get distracted and leave the cab after turning off the motor before you have set the brake , I had been operating coaches for 40 + years and learned the hard way . I got out of the drivers seat without setting the brake ( very costly boo boo ) and the coach rolled about 3 feet before I reached the E brake and set it and it scraped the side wall down the side of a Country Coach on a fence .
Great series thus far. In OKC consider visiting the National Memorial & Museum or the just opened First Americans Museum. Both are very emotional and well done. Safe travels!
Great video enjoying history :) at 17:19 you are driving by my office on the other side. See you all next time :) Hope you all had the chance to eat a Horse Shoe while you where in Springfield:). So glad to see you driving near litchfield as well :)
We traveled Route 66 this year as well as cross country LA to Tampa and it was amazing our kids loved it especially the donkeys in Oatman, AZ. There is a podcast on Route 66 that has some interesting info. Can’t wait to watch your journey unfold especially how to navigate it in a RV. But if you get a chance try to stay in at least one iconic Route 66 hotel/motel. Happy Travels!!
Not too far behind you...can't believe you didn't interview the owner of the Ryburn. Very interesting the way she saved the building and renovated it. Did you follow hyway 4 sosuth of Springfield (pre-dates ROOT 66)? Kept thinking about that giant bird on that narrow stretch of road!
I have a Wanderlodge just like yours, same layout & color scheme! And I've always wanted to do Route 66. You guys are inspiring me to get out there and do it!
In February of 1960, my family moved from Mt. Clemens, MI to San Diego, CA via Rte 66. I was 6, my sister was 4, and my mom was pregnant with my youngest sister. My dad, whose idea it was to move to Cali, talked his sister and her family into also making the move, so we were a mini-caravan. My dad was driving "The White Whale", a white '52 Plymouth sedan, complete with the high tail fins and rocket tail-lights, towing a wooden slat-sided U-haul trailer covered with a tied-down tarp that had 100% of our family's household in it. Following us was my Uncle Sonny and Aunt Eleanor with their 2 kids, my 1st cousins Linda and Richard, driving a similar rig. Being only 6 yrs old, I don't remember a whole lot of the trip, just mental thumbnails, but I do remember sitting up front with my dad when we crossed the Mississippi River in St. Louis late at night, my mom and sister asleep in the back seat, also stopping at a roadside monument in Texas, "The Heart of Texas", and my dad lifting us girls up onto the stone monument and taking our pictures. I'd love to recreate our family's journey someday...
Thank you for sharing this trip. I living my dream thru guys seeing things that I would never able to do right now. My hubby health not good So my dreams of traveling is on hold at this time. However I get a little glimpse thru your eyes. Love you all. Charlie and Gray you the icing on the cake. I end watching with a smile. 🤗
They are missing out on $$$ not having a bobblehead of the giant with hotdog! You guys are closing in fast on half a million subscribers. I hope you celebrate when you do.
Nice to see a trip through my area, lots to do in Central IL, sorry it rained in you. We've biked on Rt 66 from Normal North abc excited to have the trail go all along the mother road. Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your adventures!!
I realized looking that huge map of Route 66 that my family and I have lived on Route 66 our entire lives. My mom grew up in Springfield, IL, I went to high school in St. Louis, my parents now live in Litchfield,Il, my brothers are in Edwardsville, my uncle is in Chicago and I now live in Springfield, MO. I didn’t even realize that until right now. Also, I remember a field trip to Springfield, Il of all the Lincoln stuff in elementary school, and we rubbed Lincoln’s nose for good luck on one of his statues. Is that still there? Love the videos. ❤️
That statue was in front of a hot dog stand in Cicero on ogden Avenue for over 50 years before bunyans was sold. I lived at less 5 blocks from that place
You guys are awesome. You have inspired my family and I to buy our first fifth wheel and we plan on traveling the U.S full time starting next fall. We get to see the country and make memories while I continue my profession as a travel nurse. As soon as I retire in a few years we want an airstream just like yours. Thank you guys for inspiring us to follow our dreams!

Sounds like a novel in this story!
Loved this story!
What an awesome story you've shared with us all!
Great comment and good memories!!
I love this story. What a great child hood.

Dang Gary’s brother knocked Gary’s rocket off! What amazing library! Only two videos in and I’m sold on doing Route 66! Got my hats!
Nice. Thanks!

I think you should do an entire episode with just Charlie and Gary narrating ! Little known fact, Elton John's "Rocket man " was written about Gary.

As a truck driver I was yelling parking brake, omg you stop with the air brake and engage the parking brake to stay stopped. Paaaarking brake. LOL
Caleb said it from the back :)

You guys truly represent what’s going right in our country right now. Absolutely awesome and so much fun to watch! Thanks for all your hard work!

Just Keep Your Daydream
You’re bringing back memories! Travelled Route 66 in 1962.
that's amazing...wish I was around back then

That would have been funny. Gary is happy go lucky.

LOVE that white ruffled blouse, Trish! We are planning a trip West next spring and will hit sections of Route 66 - thanks for the preview!!
Giving the dog a voice is a great idea. There really need to be some deep conversations between the dog and Gary.
Ya’ll missed the famous cozy dog drive in on Route 66 and you also missed Lincoln’s Tomb which isn’t on Route 66 but is a must see and the old state capitol building
Who would want to do this? We would! Doing Route 66 is on our bucket list. We are really liking Gary.
So much energy with these Route 66 videos. Fun !
This is on top of my bucket list. I will be tuned in for EVERY episode. Thank You.
What a cool series! Happy Sunday funday KYD family!
Thanks. Yes, we prefer those videos too.
Route 66 is going to be a very interesting adventure, between Gary, Charlie, and their shenanigans 😜, seeing all the old historical sites, teaching Tricia how to navigate the bus, this is getting better with every episode, hang on here we go...
Gary and Charlie are a great addition to your weekly shenanigans.
I really, really, really hope you can walk a bit on the original 66 in Petrified Forest Nat'l Park...and also on that stretch around Seligman with the Burma-shave signs. Have fun!!!
I was born in normal, IL. Loving rt 66 content. Grew up in Pacific, MO. And now live near Santa Monica. Rt. 66 is my life.
Gary looks extremely confident when Trish is driving!
We were, but now we're loving watching him fall!
Thanks!
I took my boys and father on a spring break trip to St. Lous and on the way stopped at the Lincoln Library. I would go back again!
That's tonights video - back in Santa Fe.
The hot dog giant looks a lot like the Paul Bunyon giant. Be sure to stop in Tulsa, Clinton, and Elk City! Oklahoma has lots of route 66 to explore.
Another great video. You're losing air because your air brake system has a leak. When you apply the service brake with the spring brake released you should lose not more than 4 psi over 2 minutes. Plus the Bird should maintain its air overnight.
OMG... Trish, I would feel the EXACT same way.... need to process the information one step at a time.... I completely agree with you!!!
So much fun! I always thought Rt 66 would be boring but now I want to do it!
Semper Fi.
Thank you for your support!
Thanks for supporting toys for tots. Love the new trucker hats. The colors are so good.
I wish you had more of the dream hats. Already sold out. Maybe offer another color if possible.
@@denisegreen3354 We're working on making some more. Check back later in the week :)
@@KeepYourDaydream I will.
So much Fun to travel 66 with you guys👍😁 Everyone needs a Gary & a Charlie❤
Just ordered Trish’s no itch hat! Been shopping for that exact type of hat, so happy to support the channel AND get a great hat!
“I think I was better not knowing” OMG Trish. I’m with you.🥴
Brakes release only when you have 60 psi or more of air pressure , never a bad idea to chaulk wheels when parked on a incline but if and when air pressure goes down it will set the parking brake .
My wife is the same way with horns. I had a siren in my 1950 Pontiac custom and she was, at every chance, hitting that button. Lol
So far, your exploration of Route 66 is exceeding my expectations!
Get Your Kicks
There are many other lovely things to visit in Springfield. So much history. His law office is there too.
My hubby health not good
So my dreams of traveling is on hold at this time.
That is a cool decor, Route 66 theme and driving on Route 66. Great video.
We all knew what Trish was asking! the parking brake! hahaha except for Marc
Yes, I agree. I thought she was talking about the fact that the orange indicator doesn't move. Confusing at first.
Thank you so much for these videos of your journey on Route 66! I am loving it!!
Another fun one. A must for all for this route. Maybe sometime soon for us to go the whole route. Be safe. Deana and Duane
