I don't remember the last time I got punched in the face by a breakdown as hard as this one did
@@mischifer1 impressive, it is a gently punch in the face
One of the things that always impresses me with your playing is your volume control. I absolutely do not have that muscle memory built in and it's super satisfying to hear you pull off those swells live
Seriously. I’ve seen other play throughs that Mike has done and it seems like he spends just as much time working the knobs as he does playing the strings.
Yeah considering you could pull it off much easier with a volume pedal… it’s pretty wild how he does it with the knob.
He needs a signature volume pot! XD
Im not sure who but there are low friction pots im guessing he uses them
starting at 2:10 you can see him compulsively making sure volume is all the way up. That knob is a key piece to his playing for sure.
Only noticed the detail in that final chorus variation now. Snuck an extra bendy boii in there ⭕️
Those really subtle nuances are why I love bands like Spiritbox
You can always use an extra bendy boi sprinkled in now and then. Especially when you're picking up pancakes.
Yeah I feel like their guitar is drowned out a lot in their songs sometimes and it's sad cause he has some really awesome melodies
That was a nice touch!!!
It makes the song even better, wish they would do tt on album
As a thrash/death metal guitarist this astounds me. My brain doesn't work like this, and I couldn't write anything like this. It's simple and heavy yet complex. They're breaking new ground.
Agree 100%
Mike is brilliant. Knowing him as long as I have, his brain just works differently. He can map out a lead line out of anything, and make it sound completely unique.
@@bradkohl99 Lets get down to brass tacs here man... Did Mike actually wrestle a bear once? If so was the bear A) A Brown Bear, B) A Grizzly Bear or C) A rotund hairy gay man (known as bears
I love this comment bro! It's amazing when you run into a guitarist with a completely different approach and try to analyze their thought process😁
Edit: Also, I remember finding out that Perennial was in drop C# and was just like 'H O W ???? How does he make drop C# sound like *that* ?'
@@Surokkh I think this track is in Drop A with the 7 string. But I am most probably wrong... BRB gonna google it lol
According to Belca n Black's channel, it is tuned to drop F# - (F# C# F# B E G# C#) Looks like I was wrong indeed lol
Wow so many cool little intricacies I didn’t notice until now! This is so sick
Those power cords in the chorus sound so damn majestic!
Agreed!
nice playing ...you should start a band with a girl that can sing like an angel and also scream maybe
Possibly marry her even.
@@HoosierHothead ... and they could name the band Spiritbox.
@@j1shin Yeah, we sure we can hope
Bonus points if she has ever Wrestled a bear once
@@The95thZebra yeah that would be dope
that's a surprisingly clean rif, no wonder it's so catchy, thanks a lot for the playthrough!
Peep the whole album. Constant chicken head bobbing from how catchy it is. Grab your ball mit son.
It all sounds cool, but I do especially like the raking sound he makes in between the chords he's playing. It adds a cool uniqueness to it.
You should check out Gojira, they use that a lot in their music.
@@PattMyCat Gojira is a god tier band
Not sure if this is the "official" name but I call them pick scrapes haha.
@@PattMyCat ...or Textures
Could be wrong but to my knowledge Gojira invented that technique. The first time I ever heard it was in 2005 when they released From Mars To Sirius.
Don't lie, y'all singing the lyrics too
Who isn't?
I know I was...if anything I could still hear Courtney singing in my head lol be rude not to sing with her
Absolutely sang/screamed the whole thing. What an absolute jam.
Hell yeah!
Best modern metal band rn 🔥🔥🔥
That groove at 3:25-3:41 …. Oh my word. You all are unreal talented.
So nice to see a band blowing up with just straight up catchy asf riffs and groove. Not just play insanely fast and solo everything
Agreed. A lot of bands equate technical ability with good songwriting.
And if he wanted to, he is more that capable of insanely fast and solos. He’s proved that with Fall In Archaea, and even IWABO.
I would take catchy riffs and groove over shred anyway of the week!
Who else misses CHIMAIRA with the grooves .Rob be kicking on his channel
@@user-tj3wr6dj4d YES! Chimaira is so underrated!
Mike this is a beautiful. Spiritbox is a naturally treasure in world music. Keep waiting new album. From Russia with love!
I’m beyond stoked that this band is getting the recognition they deserve. Each of them individually had remarkable talent, and the way they compose each song just highlights those skills.
im a simple man, i see spiritbox i click. also really good tone and playthrough and thanks for that. much love
OkayChamp :+1:
I'm happy I've discovered this band. Such good stuff and the sounds I would have never guessed were done with a guitar.
I love watching these types of videos as you get to see how individual parts of the song are put together ❤
I've always had this fascination with how guitarists work their instruments, but this to me is like seeing magic performed
Honestly have to say, I am an electronic fan. Mostly Drum and Bass, haven’t heard an entire metal album all the way through since Meshuggah’s Chaosphere. Way back when. I came across ‘Hurt You’ a couple days ago and decided to give the rest of the album a listen… I haven’t heard a band with as much range, uniquely beautiful sounds or lead vocals as I have with you guys. Your band is truly unique and I have no doubt that you are on track to reshape the core of this music scene. You all deserve everything coming to you! Don’t change a THING!!!!
all the intricacies, all the details you'd miss, even if you are a musician...what an awesome playthrough
That chorus is simply beautiful
Something about that pickup section @3:23 just got me I love it
Mike's sense of musicality is always impeccable.
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever on an 7 string guitar in awhile, those ambiance high string notes are very beautiful during trips and stuff
That break down is honestly one of the best breakdowns I’ve ever heard. Absolutely love it!!!
I am telling everyone, ERRA and Spitirbox tour together, it'll be fucking awesome!
Indeed, ERRA with moths to flames and August burns red will suffice for now tho, u get tickets?
@@soulofcinder2007 I'm from India bro. :/
THAT IS A MASTERPIECE FROM START TO FINISH. EVERY PART.
I've never seen anyone play the knobs so well. incredible
Just saw spiritbox last night, and they were absolutely amazing. This song crushed!!
This sounds pretty sick instrumenatally. I wish bands could release instrumental versions of their songs more often
This is so original and compelling that I'm lost for words.
That riff in the last chorus is tooooo fucking sick, man!
Dude that last chorus riff is really sick like the way it flows and the f*cking bends dude I can't🔥
The change-up in the last chorus riff was soooo goood
Many of the details are completely lost in the final mix, so awesome to have this video :)
Mike is one of those players where you can really sink into his playing and find little details you might have missed the first time around.
The chord progession in the chorus is the perfect representation of what we all want to hear in a song. Love the transformation/build up to towards the end (and everything else about this song :D).
Just recently discovered Spiritbox and now I'm hooked. Awesome.
I really need to learn those harmonic sweeps...he makes them look so easy!
I mean not to be that guy but they are pretty easy
@@yellowsaurus4895 not to be that guy but not everybody is at the same skill level as you
@@aus10tv it wasnt my intent to be condescending, just saying they really aren't as hard as one might think. They're certainly nowhere near as difficult as actual sweep arpeggios (which i cant seem to get down for the life of me, so it's not like I'm some virtuoso over here).
I agree, it's surprisingly easy to do. Dialing in the tone to get them to sound like this however.....
@@yellowsaurus4895 happy to be wrong man, my bad
Oh wow I hadn’t even noticed those volume swells in the vrs with the singing at the same time, mega pretty.
That last chorus groove is soo tasty
Mike is a beast! One of the best songwritters out there!
Aside from this being such a good song and playthrough, the video production and lighting is quite elegant and fitting the vibe of this tune, awesome job folks!
Amazing Guitar Playthrough
One of the groove kings.
Masterpiece.
This played randomly while listening to Spiritbox while I was driving back to home and listening to this was an absolute pleasure!
That turnaround in the breakdown....chefs kiss
This instrumental is a work of art! You know the band is exceptional, when the song is an absolute banger even without vocals.
The instrumental songwriting is insane. It's so well crafted. They know to pull back and when to go for it and it never sounds too busy or too sparse.
This was awesome! It's good dope artists do this cuz it really let's us non musicians see how much really goes into your songs. Killer job man!
Stuff like that makes me happy.
Spiritbox overall makes me happy.
Man. Mike of off the chain talented. I absolutely love the deep tones he achieves and the pick scrapes. These guys are blowing up.
the amount of volume tone checking is insane
The balance/dynamics of this song are so on point.
That was awesome. I wonder how many knobs he worn out? Lol.
I would love to see a play through of Secret Garden. Gotta see how he plays the verses.
This and a bass playthrough!
@@Traviolie It’s always good to see Bill on his bass.
Truly makes you appreciate all the ambiance created in the track. And that outtro riff when they go double time is so sick to watch.
That high note upstroke @1:28 cant seem to figure out what he does, but it sounds awesome
This is pure talent right here, absolutely amazing!
It’s perfectly well written guitar part, some part shining out, some part soaring in the background amplify the vocal track. Superb!
Omg finally a live video not done with a cell phone ! More please
This is just absolutely incredible
I love how many guitar players have the nervous "make sure the volume is all the way up" tick during sustained rests. 😆
Killer playthrough!
Miss it once onstage and you'll be scarred for life, lol. I do the same thing without thinking about it.
I didn't fully appreciate the guitar parts of this song until I watched you play through them. I like how you set the groove, but vary things from there. The contrast between heavy, down-tuned rhythm and The Edge style echoed cleaner parts works so well. This is great guitar work sneaking in under Courtney's voice and those big drums.
this is awesome. you guys got a official video of ur band members doing separate playthroughs with studio quality. i wish more bands did this format. i love seeing these lol
Those verse and pre-chorus riffs are SO goddamn groovy! How did I never notice them listening to the full version?
Ohhh my god dude, the riffs are so heavy it crushes my brain 🤯
And then the melodic picking!! You guys are too good. 🤟 👑👑👑
I need the whole album RIGHT NOW! I can't remember the last time I couldn't wait for an album this much
sheeeesh I never realize how much Courtney’s voice adds to the melody until I listen to these play through without vocals!
Exactly!
Mike, I keep coming back to the 3:25 riff over and over. In the full song, it takes second chair to Courtney's vocals-deservedly so-but holy shit is it musical perfection. I've sent this playthrough to so many people just because of that riff. Every time the end of the song unleashes, I smile because of your guitar part. Good shit!
The most exciting band to watch right now.
Each member of Spiritbox is so important to the bands sound. So good!
The main riff , 🤯 no lie one of the best riffs ever
Man that is one inspiring, dynamic and beautiful piece of work.
Excellent job!
Dude.... That is so sick! Incredible playing. Its almost like you're in the band. Amazing!
I always looking toward his cover everytime their single comes out...and boy he never disappoint me...
Idk the actual term to this but those upsweep harmonics are fucking SICK!!!!!
2 octave powerchords underneath a lead line and a catchy hook all day!
Def gonna check out these massive tones!
I downloaded all of these. Do you use them as scenes or presets?
Dude Mike I’ve been extremely inspired by your playing as a guitar player and an overall musician. Keep it up man!!!!🤘🏼🔥
As a guitar player with extreme writer's block I would love to see more videos on the creative writing process. This is so good.
So tasteful 🤗
I love the contrast between the agressive and the beautiful.
Wow I hear so many different things when you hear it like this. Phenomenal guitarist and musician 🤘🤘
I have listened to your songs on spotify religiously since i discovered you almost exactly a year ago and this is why! These kinds of riffs with the heavy hitting drums. Courtney's incredible voice! Keeps me turning it up! I cant wait for the record !!!
Mike is quickly becoming one of my favorite guitarists.
The unsung backbone of spiritbox. Loving these play throughs
I love how the more songs you do the more they feel so well blended together with the vocals and just how amazingly strong the melody lines are!
I also love how you added the intricacies at the end it really adds to the build of the song! It really feels like you and Courtney are working so well together and playing off each other! Keep up the awesome work you guys!
Also Mike you are one smooth king of the bouncy riffs! Can’t help but move! Don’t stop! I wish you all the best, you deserve it!
Those Bouncy Melodic Bends in your songs are just so 🔥! No one does it like you Mike!
Beautiful songwriting Mike Stringer!
insane playing. insane writing.
Is it just me or those riffs + Lundgren M7s sound Brutal AF!
I mean the lundgren pickup is the pickup meshuggah has used for decades now so it makes sense!
@@drumkidstu It's not about what you play. Or how. But WHY! bahahaha
Beautiful 😍
the mix on these songs are amazing! i havent heard a band sound so good! the way the bass cuts through the mix with those low notes!! huge fan of your music!
Extreme epic and technical thing - i can hear it on repeat
The Shred is strong with this one....... Stoked to see he's back in action with this Aristides axe
One of my favorite guitarist now. Hope you keep pressing on, and keep making sick riffs for me to listen to please.
This song haunts me, so perfect. Thank you Spiritbox and thank you Mike for this playthrough, unbelievable.
Ok bro you got me, I don't like to be honest these super modern stuff but ok, you got me with this one, big props.
