Going To California is definitely my favourite from Led Zep IV. Very much a lovely, romantic yet hopeless song. As someone who currently is 22, Robert Plants lyrics are perfectly on point and they speak directly to me, which I find rarely happens
When the Levee Breaks is my favorite; that drum sound gets me every time from the very first second, making me question my choice of instrument, and then the harmonica comes along and makes me wish playing the harmonica didn't murder my poor delicate lips! 😄
I wasn't going to subscribe to any more channels because RUclips is sucking out too much time for me...but your reactions are just too good to miss. Excellent reactions/analyses of albums and songs. I hope you do every Zeppelin album. Keep up the good work! You are doing an excellent job...
One thing to know for you - there have been always the strange rumors of Led Zeppelin's connection to the occult. Jimmy Page bought the house of Aleister Crowley, british occultist and novelist of the early 20th century. And if you want to hear Sandy Denny - Fairport Conventions album "Unhalfbricking" is a very beautiful recording of english style folk rock songs. Especially "Who knows where the time goes" Drum battles - the best of them all: Buddy Rich vs. Animal from the Muppets, of course😉
Others will have no doubt said this, but two time signatures running together is polyrhythm. The best known example is Led Zep's song Kashmir, which has the riff played in 3/4 time over drums in 4/4 time. This same polyrhythm is used in the Beatles' track Happiness is a Warm Gun ('I need a fix' section), which you/Caroline reacted to on the White Album.
I've always thought of 3/4 over 4/4 as 6/8 time: one two three FOUR five six . . . For polyrhythm in rock, one need look no farther than Chuck Berry. In "Johnny B Goode" the drummer played straight 4/4 but with swingtime on the cymbal. In "Rock & Roll Music," the piano is *wildly* syncopated, sort of a New Orleans jazz feel over the 4/4 down-beat back-beat of the rhythm section.
@christopherlees1134 It is! Thanks for adding to my vocab. I have noticed the three-in-two time thing a few times in various odd songs but didn't know what that was called.
Growing up as a seventies child I can tell you when any rock station did its annual countdown of the top 500 songs of all time Stairway to Heaven was always number one. (USA)…
Was on too early for me to watch live but enjoyed catching up. I'll try and watch one live if there's ever one on a day I'm not working. My favourite songs on the album are When The Levee Breaks and Going to California.
If you like Led Zeppelin, you will LOVE Heart, especially since they are slightly softer and poppier (but still hard rock) than Zeppelin. They're also the greatest female fronted band of all time, so they're absolutely worth checking out just for that alone
Led Zeppelin themselves were having fits trying to record Black Dog in their recording sessions. Bonzo in his frustration trying to get the time down took a break, he started playing the drum line from another song. The rest of band jammed in and "Rock and Roll" spontaneously came into existence.
Stairway to heaven is one of the greatest songs of all time. That being said my favorites rotate all the time depending on my mood. It’s hard to find a song that you won’t like on their 8 albums. I hope you work your way through them and you will see what zeppelin fans are saying
Really enjoyed this and your review of LZ IV. You will enjoy this discography run. They aren't one of the biggest bands that ever existed for nothing but they have such a varied catalogue that you will find something you really like in different sections of their music. These long forms are fun too. You should do one that really intrigued you then do a random album you reacted too. So you always have interesting shows to look forward too and dont become overwhelmed with albums you like but dont find particularly interesting. Always like your vids and hope you enjoyed the ride. BTW Stairway To Heaven is the most requested song in all of rock radio in the years US rock radio was largely popular. Its probably not the case now but it was requested and played up with the most played songs in music radio history. That song was and still is immensely popular. Weddings, funerals, parties, driving in any category it is enjoyed and was listened too. Stairway is in the top 10 songs of all time easily.
I love the fact you didn’t notice the time changes the first time you heard it My favourites from this going to California, battle of evermore and when the levee breaks. Four sticks right up there too. Each song is different and that was led zeppelin’s mantra. No two albums were the same. Please review more albums. It’s a wild ride !
As I and several others suggested in an earlier incarnation of your Patreon, I think that you'd really like Heart, especially their earlier works before they went hair band and commercial in the 80's. The obvious first choice would be Dreamboat Annie, which had perhaps their two biggest hits, Crazy on You and Magic Man. If you like Zeppelin then you're definitely going to like Heart, especially given that they were really big Zeppelin and Beatles fans early on. Also the first really big female-fronted rock band. Amazing sound. Hard rock but also very melodic, just like Zeppelin. And even if you don't react to them you just have to listen to and watch their performance of Stairway at a tribute to Zeppelin with the three surviving members in attendance.
"Misty Mountain Hop" is my 2nd favorite after "When the Levee Breaks". This album is the consummate Rock Album of the early 70's. If I was forced at gunpoint to name a a number 2? It would probably "Who's Next". I was 11 when this album came out and it was played to me on a cassette by teenage daughter of friends of my parents (I think she was 13 or 14 at the time). When the second side came on and 4 sticks came on, I literally felt somewhat frightened and freaked out. So much power and mystery! A year and a half later, I couldn't get enough of them. Going to California is my number 3. It's probably the most beautiful song they ever wrote. I just watched a video of Diane Jennings (The Irish girl) reacting to Black Dog, She picked up on the weird time signature of the song early on, although (Not being a musician) had trouble articulating it. This is of a time when (and Zeppelin was lucky because Jimmy signed a contract that basically said he could do whatever he wanted to do) they just threw stuff at the wall and if it stuck they followed it! I really appreciate a young person like Caroline/student of music looking at this stuff in a historical context.
You're one of the few people I've seen admit they liked "Misty Mountain Hop." Personally, I freakin' love that song and always have. As for "Levee," it is one of the album's big moments, their first "Kashmir," if you will. For me, the other big moment was "Battle of Evermore:" absolutely stunning.
My fav track of Led Zep IV is "When The Levee Breaks". Followed by "Battle Of Evermore", "Stairway To Heaven" and "Going To California". My favourite all-time song is still "Child In Time (Deep Purple In Rock, 1970)" by Deep Purple. Most liked Led Zeppelin album is "Led Zep III".
I love all your choices until you get to "Child in Time". Just a personal issue with me. I can't stand Ian's voice on that song. Led Zep III is a REALLY good album, but not a great album by Zep. Standards.
@@j.kevvideoproductions.6463 "Zep standards"? Or your standards? What about me making choices based on MY standards, eh? No hard feelings, but I don't care one bit if you do or don't like Gillan's voice on "Child In Time" because it doesn't matter (just like MY opinion doesn't matter to anyone else but me). I still have the song at the top of my all-time favourites. Just as I still have Led Zep III as my favourite Led Zeppelin album. "Gallow's Pole", "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp", "Out On The Tiles", "Tangerine", "Immigrant Song", "Friends", "Since I've Been Loving You", "Celebration Day", "That's The Way"... Even the quirky "Hats Off To Roy Harper". All standards. Oh, and my second fav Zep album is "Physical Graffiti".
"Evermore" is absolutely one of Zeppelin's high moments in their catalogue. In concert, however, they were never really able to recapture the majesty of the album cut.
That backward effect (reverse, add ‘verb, unreverse) - same principle on digital as analog. Best example is at the very beginning of “Tommy Aitkins” by Paul Duggan where a forwards vocal is given a backwards feel.
Caroline, "Bonzo" was a cartoon dog created by British comic strip artist George Studdy in the 1920s. It became a beloved character and an icon. I believe John was called "Bonzo" earlier in life, before he became a professional musician.
Hi Caroline, love your reactions a musician listening to and analyzing other music, not just saying 'i like it or i dont like it'. Loved your Beatles series. Re: Black Dog, I'm sure others have told you already - written by JPJ! Riff/line is a BASS and guitar parallel riff, not just guitar. JPJ came up with it, in either 7/8 or 11/12 time? so that others couldn't (easily) play it. Interviews with JPJ indicate it was Bonzo who had trouble with learning it. JPJ said just play 4/4 and we'll come around to meet you. And they do line up eventually, a few times, during the song. It was called Black Dog cause they needed a title and there was a black dog roaming around the grounds of the house they rented to write this album. If we dug deeper I think we'd find that other Zep dongs with different time signatures were either Jonesy's or Jonesy inspired. Not all, obv. Jimmy and Bonzo also were creative with rhythms too. JPJ was an all around trained musician though. Bass, keys, guitar, mandolin, etc. Black Dog is fun to play (Ive done it on guitar and bass, I probably mess up the last note or beat though on the main riff). 😊
Picking a fav Zep song is like maybe the one you hear at the moment . When the Levee Breaks is the best heavy track . The easy songs are great GT California and TBO Evermore.... ST Heaven, Robert actually was sick of that song for a long time but it still is epic ..Just listen to LZ 1 2 3 in order then to Houses of the Holy ... Plant has a solo line up of many good songs also..
It has been said elsewhere that since the release of LZ Vol. IV that Stairway is the most requested song for radio play ever all over the world!!! I'm not sure how true this is, but looking at the stats there it would seem to bear this out.
When The Levee Breaks is my favorite by far. Then Battle Of Evermore and Going To California. Although I’ve heard Stairway To Heaven so many times I may take it for granted. I have that song memorized.
Thanks for doing this. Nice to hear your thoughts on these songs! If you do the next one a couple hours earlier in the day, that might help out some viewers. 😀 I hope you do "Houses of the Holy" at some point, my favo(u)rite LZ album along with IV.
Glad you like Led Zep. Yes 4 was amazing but you will appriciate their growth if you listen to them from the beginning and also some live clips on youtube. I was fortunate enough to see them live in the mid seventies. Yake the time and listen to the rest
The music business has always been a magnet for unsavory characters. Artists have always been shortchanged by the record labels. Did you know that even in the CD era, the record labels kept an extra 10 percent of artist earnings they otherwise would have owed due to "breakage" - this referred to the vinyl era when records would break or be damaged in shipment to distributors. CDs don't really break like vinyl did, and vinyl probably never broke at a rate of 10 percent of all the records. Even worse, back in the 50s and 60s an artist would often get paid for the day's session - and that was that. So they've always been creative about screwing the artists as much as possible, for the same reason large corporations do the same to their employees. That said, Zeppelin negotiated an excellent deal for themselves.
Wikipedia: The song was written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant at Headley Grange while Page was experimenting on John Paul Jones's mandolin.[6][7] Page explained in 1977 that "'Battle of Evermore' was made up on the spot by Robert [Plant] and myself. I just picked up John Paul Jones's mandolin, never having played a mandolin before, and just wrote up the chords and the whole thing in one sitting."[8]
People! Black Dog is NOT in an odd time signature. It's in 4. Just 4. The section where they get slightly off, is because they get slightly off. Notice it doesn't happen live. This is not my theory. John Paul Jones has said this. 4/4. Weird groove? Yes. But that actually makes it harder and more exacting. But it's in 4. Just 4. Whole time.
"The Rain Song" is probably my favourite Zeppelin piece. I also love "That's The Way", "Ramble On" and "Ten Years Gone". But as a guitarplayer my favourite riff of theirs has to be "Heartbreaker". Heavy, bluesy and steamy. It's just too cool, and I feel pretty cool when playing it at full volume 😅
My current favorite is Battle of Evermore, 10/10. When the Leveee Breaks is actually a work of genius, though. And Misty Mountain Hop is a crazy throwback to Psychedelia, which I love. Great album top to bottom - not a single "skip" song on it. Perfect record.
You might be interested to know that John Farnham used to sing Black Dog as the sound check before concerts. There is a recording of it, which you can find on RUclips and Spotify. It’s actually a really good rendition (as one would expect from Farnsey).
About the challenges of using mandolins in music. Yes, a concert mandolins is a high pitched string instrument. However, the mandolins family is big. There are small and larger members of the family. If you want a lower pitch sound, search for mandolins, its the lowest pitched and played just like any other mandolin.
The Pnk Floyd tune with backward masking is called Empty Spaces, from The Wall. It's kinda disappointing. It says something to the effect of, "Congratulations, you've found the backward message".
There was a fantastic album of Stairway to Heaven covers by various Aussie cover bands (and unfortunately Rolf Harris, lets ignore him) from a TV show called The Money or The Gun. The Doors version is pretty good, it's worth checking out.
There is a video somewhere with Jimmy Page discussing the different time signatures in Black Dog. His response the other guys in the band was Don't worry, Ill catch up.
Just noticed an unintentional Lord of the Rings link on your stream that you possibly missed, the Led Zeppelin Iv documentary is presented by Graham McTavish who played Dwalin in The Hobbit films. My fav track from IV , draw between Battle of Evermore and When the Levee Breaks
Favorite on IV would be When the Levee Breaks. Overall, In My Time of Dying from Physical Graffiti. The Pnk Floyd tune with backward masking is called Empty Spaces, from The Wall. It's kinda disappointing. It says something to the effect of, "Congratulations, you've found the backward message". Stairway was released as a single and is still the most played song in history. Many years ago, it was claimed that if you were to string together all the times it's been played back-to-back, it would play continuously for over 50 years. It's much longer now.
Black Dog was a single release Hit number 15 in U.S.A. and Number 10 in Australia. Rock and Roll was issued as a single and reached number 47 in the USA ans number 51 in Your Austrailia, Stairway was not top 40 radio airplay in USA Four Sticks was the flip side of Rock and Roll and Misty Mountain Hop was the flip side of Black Dog
That's The Way on Zep III (1970) is based upon Both Sides Now by Joni (1969) The chordal language in the verses are almost identical, though Zeppelin takes things a bit further (as they often do) Play both songs at the same time and it sort of works.
You really Dared to give it a 8 of 10?! xD It was intentionally made so complex that even LED needed quite more takes in the studio than usual, because they had to use ALL their skill to get this done, so it can never be covered by anyone else forever. So far they succeeded, as you had to realize yourself. This is thee song that makes Led zeppelin stay in our minds until the end of time.
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant do some great acoustic versions of some of these songs such as black dog and when the levee breaks. Some were done for a PBS special and may only be found on RUclips. The contrast to the originals is so striking that it makes for a lot of fun. If you have time, check them out. ❤❤❤
The identity of the man with thatch sticks on his back was finally identified in November 2023. I don't think I can link articles this comment section, but you can Google it. Very interesting story.
Google: How long is an ideal radio song? around 3 minutes There is a sweet spot for a radio edit length, and that is around 3 minutes. It fits nicely into an hour and you can fit all the components of a song into it. Now, you might say, “but Georgie, Bohemian Rhapsody was 6 minutes long”. I hear what you're saying but that is an exception to the rule.28 Aug 2019
There is a recent video on you tube I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!...When The Levee Breaks feat. John Paul Jones I Playing For Change I Song Around The World. A remake o' this classic Led Zeppelin track with a diverse cast o' characters that'll blow yer mind.
the backward thingy is not that a person is in control of how the songs written and sung as to put a hidden message in when reversed but a evil spirit is inspiring them that makes it happen
Led Zeppelin Without Electric Guitar: - Black Mountain Side Thank You Friends Gallows Pole Bron-Y-Aur Stomp Hats off To (Roy) Harper The Battle of Evermore Going to California
Stairway overplayed? Maybe in the 70s or 80s not now. I guarantee none of these tweens on reddit have been at a party where someone has put this song on, and most have likely never listened to it all the way through. All people on reddit do is repeat the status quo, they have no original opinions.
Also remember , battle of evermore was released in 1971, there were no LOTR movies out yet, Plant loved the books
indeed, many people in the early 70's in america became aware of JRR through led zep
Going To California is definitely my favourite from Led Zep IV.

Oh my! I'm going to enjoy this one :D
Kashmir also has two time signatures.
"Kashmir" Is On Led Zeppelin IV?
Interesting 🤔😁
@@johnhenryclark911 I was referring to songs with two simultaneously played time signatures, in reference to her comment, not songs specific to IV..
Favorite as a kid: Black Dog
Favorite now: Stairway then Levee
You would probably really like Sandy Denny's work with Fairport Convention - check out Who Knows Where the Time Goes, and Farewell, Farewell!
The Pnk Floyd tune with backward masking is called Empty Spaces, from The Wall. It's kinda disappointing. It says something to the effect of,
"Congratulations, you've found the backward message".
One of the greatest albums ever. Listen to Kashmir. I believe it's greatest rock tune ever. Magical.
Really good stuff CMC, you are a natural at this. How about a Dark Side of the Moon re-review? It deserves the attention.
Favorite on IV would be When the Levee Breaks.
Overall, In My Time of Dying from Physical Graffiti.

Rock and Roll was issued as a single and reached number 47 in the USA ans number 51 in Your Austrailia, Stairway was not top 40 radio airplay in USA
Four Sticks was the flip side of Rock and Roll and Misty Mountain Hop was the flip side of Black Dog
That's The Way on Zep III (1970) is based upon Both Sides Now by Joni (1969) The chordal language in the verses are almost identical, though Zeppelin takes things a bit further (as they often do) Play both songs at the same time and it sort of works.
You really Dared to give it a 8 of 10?! xD
It was intentionally made so complex that even LED needed quite more takes in the studio than usual, because they had to use ALL their skill to get this done, so it can never be covered by anyone else forever. So far they succeeded, as you had to realize yourself. This is thee song that makes Led zeppelin stay in our minds until the end of time.
Black Dog 8.5, RnR 8.5, Battle 10, Stairway 6, Misty 6.5, 4Sticks 10, Levee 10
Alison Krauss and Robert Plant do some great acoustic versions of some of these songs such as black dog and when the levee breaks. Some were done for a PBS special and may only be found on RUclips. The contrast to the originals is so striking that it makes for a lot of fun. If you have time, check them out. ❤❤❤
The identity of the man with thatch sticks on his back was finally identified in November 2023. I don't think I can link articles this comment section, but you can Google it. Very interesting story.
I would say the font of the STH lyrics look Elvenish? Almost like the scribe on 'Precious' the ring?
If Led Zeppelin wanted to call the fourth album Led Zeppelin IV they would have named it that.
When the Levee Breaks
You can watch Jimmy Page play the mandolin part from the Battle of Evermore in the documentary This Might Get Loud
Sandy Denny was one of a kind. Check out Fotheringay or Liege & Lief.
we are now farther away from LZ's cover of 'when the levee breaks' than zeppelin was from the original when they covered it
Please do Led Zeppelin 3 .. u will like their acoustic stuff
Google:
How long is an ideal radio song?
around 3 minutes
There is a sweet spot for a radio edit length, and that is around 3 minutes.
A remake o' this classic Led Zeppelin track with a diverse cast o' characters that'll blow yer mind.
the backward thingy is not that a person is in control of how the songs written and sung as to put a hidden message in
when reversed but a evil spirit is inspiring them that makes it happen
Love ya 🇦🇺

Going to California
Did you ever get to watch the Get Back documentary?
Jimmy Page up fronted £35,000 of his own money to record “Led Zeppelin” before they had a record deal. They quickly got signed up by Atlantic.
My top 3 rankings would be
Stairway To Heaven
Battle of Evermore
Four Sticks
Done
Battle of Evermore. and going to cali.
Stairway overplayed? Maybe in the 70s or 80s not now. I guarantee none of these tweens on reddit have been at a party where someone has put this song on, and most have likely never listened to it all the way through. All people on reddit do is repeat the status quo, they have no original opinions.
led zep fans would probably listen to this album on vinyl, so Spotify is not a real reflection of people who listen to led zep
um if stairway is not a 10, what is? The most played FM radio song of the 70s
led zeppelin will cause ripples in your music pool of influences. first ripple; more zeppelin lol. second ripple; Sandy Denny. You. Will. Love. Her.
Lotta people think that IV is the best Zeppelin album . . . . .
Led Zeppelin didn’t do singles! 😂😂😂 purposely! Well until later…btw, Jimmy Page is a genius. FM played album cuts…and even whole albums.
Gran trabajo Caroline
Tue fact - bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones (real name John Baldwin) is my Uncle's first cousin.
I you react to Led Zeppelin 1 through 3, you are then obligated to do Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti . It's the law.
boo
