I thought it was obvious, fusion is sharing a moment, and becoming the moment. In Garnet's words "first you need a body of light, then you need someone to trust with that light." When you dance, your sharing a bonded moment, your showing them a peice of who you are. You let loose, open up all states of being to the other, and it happens. You don't need to dance if the bond is already established, but dancing helped Greg get closer to Rose, and that's what fusion really is about.
Its literally explained in the show. They need to synchronize its why Opal is hard to form initially but they all love Steven so it's easier for them to fuse with him
In my opinion, i would say it is for the purpose of synchronization. For gems to fuse, they need to be concentrated and syncronizing, therefore it would make sense for the dance to make both their mental and physical aspects to match and fuse with ease Of course, if those gems are connected enough, they can concentrate and fuse without a dance. It's not always though, as with Sunstone for example The first time Steven and Garnet fused, Steven just needed to hug Ruby and Saphire's gems to fuse. However, in "A Very Special Episode" they were both in a quite annoying and tiring situation, so it would make sense they needed a small dance to fuse
a Just Dance x Steven Universe collab would actually be very fun imagine a duet routine where each player does a unique dance then the coaches on-screen fuse into one and has the players perform a unified choreo
I really like the theory that it’s just a Crystal Gems tradition. It adds to the worldbuilding for me and how through all of the years living separately, the Crystal Gems have developed their own culture apart from Homeworld’s
You know I feel fusions are the biggest interest I think of Steven Universe. I feel the reason why I feel fusion resonates with me is how the fusions represent self love, bonds, cooperation but also if gone too far its co dependent, self damaging, and toxic. At first I thougut fusions were nonsensical but I realize how important it is. I feel the reason why dances and synchronism is part of fusions is perhaps the gems view fusion like performance. The gems then slowly come together and suddenly become in sync. The fusions are how they express themselves and view fusions as a way to understand or connect. I think the reason why Malachite, Garnet, and Sugilite don't unfuse is because both gems is shaped on how they are spiritually. Sugilite and Malachite may be toxic fusions, but their objective makes sense. While Garnet is made out of acceptance and love. That's why the Cluster is the antithesis of the fusions. They were manipulated and used and couldn't express themselves willingly. That is why they scream and cry, because they lost sight of who they were because they were forced to. A hive mind rather than a stable relationship.
I always just saw it as the gems needing only to be mentally in sync to fuse, and dancing just happens to be a good way to get all synced up if they aren't already. Pretty much every instance of fusion happening without a dance involves the characters already being on the same page, so a dance beforehand to get all prepared is unnecessary
Loved this analysis! It reminds me of something I noticed in Mr. Greg - as Pearl and Greg start to understand and accept each other, it is shown through them dancing together at the end of Both of You. And before that, Pearl had refused to dance with Greg, saying she would dance “maybe later.” I think it’s a very effective and creative way to represent understanding others, especially with how much music plays a role in the show. Really beautiful storytelling.
I just want to throw another point of discussion into the mix: For Homeworld, they were taught to view fusion as a tool; something that serves a purpose. When they need to fuse, they do it. The Crystal Gems more see it as a part of themselves, something that doesn't need to always serve a purpose. It can be useful, but that's not the reason they have it. What I'm getting at is that the act of dancing before fusing is similar. They don't always need to do it, but it's a part of being who they are, and nonetheless useful sometimes for getting in the right mindset to actually fuse.
TL;DR version: dancing makes it easier for multiple gems to mentally get in-sync since it requires them to cooperate, both mentally and physically. And, THAT makes fusion easier to do & also produces stronger results!
I think there is an emotional component. Gems dence to get more in tune with their emotions, that's why their gems start to glow when they start to dance (usually with steven, his gem glows when he's expiriencimg strong emotions) and dancing may help flear up their emotions, making their bodies more loose (literally) and the more in since their feelings, the less of a need for a dance
If I remember correctly Rebeca Sugar said that Garnet and Pearl "danced" with their hands to fuse into Sardonyx when they were almost crushed. I could also be wrong but that is something I remember hearing somewhere.
I think it stems from initially being for the purpose of entertainment. However, it was given some subtle depth that you opened my eyes to through this video.
I think of it this way, using your instrument apology at the start. You can PLAY the instrument, but the result won't be a good stable sound until it's tuned. It's a quality measure, so they're less likely to fall apart.

I think the dancing is what helps them concentrate and focus, it's why in the more serious moments when they'd share a purpose (like Ruby and Sapphire during the baseball game simply wanting to come back together without a full dance, or when Steven gets corrupted and Alexandrite is formed) a dance isn't fully needed, the ideas are synchronized, but it fails the first time when Pearl and Amethyst have different dances to try to form Opal, the idea isn't really there until Steven gets eaten.

One other thing that interests me a lot about fusion is how the resulting personality is determined. Obviously nobody's fully one-dimensional in their personality, but I've noticed that compatible aspects of their personalities tend to be boldened and more apparent when added together, while incompatible traits tend to fizzle out completely. Let's look at the "main" archetype of each important character in the show Steven: Joyful Connie: Studious Ruby: Hot-headed Sapphire: Calm Amethyst: Brash Pearl: Elegant Lapis: Resentful Jasper: Determined When these personalities mix you get the main archetypes of every fusion. Garnet loses both the anger and the calmness of her counterparts since they're incompatible and becomes relatively Neutral, with the added confidence of the fact that she's so in love with... Well... Herself, so her Archetype just becomes "Confident" Opal loses the Brash and Elegant nature of her counterparts as well, which is why she doesn't seem to project much of a personality, as she's also pretty Neutral. Sugilite's Brash and Confident natures add together and turns to being outright conceited and reckless. She loves herself way too much to care what anyone thinks of how she behaves. Sardonyx has the Confidence and Elegance mixed to create a showman of sorts. She's proper enough to know how to be appealing, but also confident enough to have some fun with it Stevonnie's Joyful and Studious natures combine into someone who's more mature and confident than her counterparts. She's got the intelligence to know her limits but just enough wonder and curiosity to try pushing them anyway. Smokey Quartz's Brash and Joyful natures mix to be a Prankster of sorts. Immature on purpose and knows it. All in good taste though, of course. Rainbow 2.0's Elegant and Joyful natures mix to also create something of an entertainer similar to Sardonyx, but this time for a different audience. The kind of person you'd want to hire for a birthday party or babysit your psychopathic child named Onion. Sunstone's Joyful and Confident natures mix to become somewhat of a motivational speaker. Malachite's Resent and Determination mix to become fully Malicious and spiteful, which... Definitely shows. Alexandrite and Obsidian are both situations where there's just too many gems with different personalities that basically all of them fizzle out and become Neutral again, except a lot more unstable. I don't like all the stuff that this show does, but I gotta say, both the foreshadowing and fusion design in this show are some of the best things in fiction
At this point I wouldn’t be surprised that someone will end up making some crystal computer capable of projecting solid holograms a 100% inspired by SU’s theories
Gems have to be synchronised to fuse. Some gems can do this without dance, cuz their already synchronised. But otherwise, a little jam session can sync up the gems.
The dance is to synchronize the 2 components in one in that moment they dance they feel like there own room Once it's fused the fusion has the components of the 2 units or the clothes and accessories it can combine the weapons of the components that fused creating a new weapon but if the units needs to be onto the same page or they will defuse the fusion is it's own person and has a personality sometimes out of the units that fused one personality mostly is on front As example in sardonix pearl controls mostly the fusions personality even tought the fusion is a own person But they are also sometimes exceptions like smoky quartz smoky quartz has the mixed version of Steven and amethyst but also connie and stevens fusion have a different personality or steg both are exceptions sins both aren't gems this can be triggered if they are Also on the same page with the Gem as example also rose quartz the only male fusions are steg rainbow quartz 2.0 since mostly the female part takes it and yes Sunstone is a female and so smoky Quartz Sunstone as example as the mixed personality of stevens comfydence and garnets protectiveness
This is a very accurate coclusion of fusion I myself saw this almost every time i watched it, garnet was for love opel for friendship alexandrite for partnership malachite was communly toxic bluebird was out of hate to the same person mega pearl was typicaly the pearls being there for each other and thats how far i got to cross gems fusion is very diffuclt but gems of the same kind dont have to do much to sync, ruby once said that when she fused with the other rubys she felt like herself but bigger same goes for the same kind gems fusion no need for a thid party only one. "Also the voice narrating in the video is so cool is it you or ai? If its ai please tell me how u did it😅😅😅"
I have a curiosity: is it possible for the gems to fuse with Stevonnie? Considering the fact that Stevonnie is only possible because of Steven's half human side, but the gems and connie have no such connection. I think it SHOULD be possible, but theres never any indication that its even a thought. Im also super curious about how those fusions would look.
They dance as they dance in dragon ball (dragon ball z for anime people). Its just lifted from the dragon ball fushion dance with a splash of magical girl.
.....because of the fusion dance in DBZ??? where if trunks and goten arent in sync, their fusion into a larger, more powerful saiyan warrior fails????????? is this not known or so obvious no one bothered mentioning it? im so confused

Gems have to be synchronised to fuse. Some gems can do this without dance, cuz their already synchronised. But otherwise, a little jam session can sync up the gems.
The dance is to synchronize the 2 components in one in that moment they dance they feel like there own room
Once it's fused the fusion has the components of the 2 units or the clothes and accessories it can combine the weapons of the components that fused creating a new weapon but if the units needs to be onto the same page or they will defuse the fusion is it's own person and has a personality sometimes out of the units that fused one personality mostly is on front
As example in sardonix pearl controls mostly the fusions personality even tought the fusion is a own person
But they are also sometimes exceptions like smoky quartz smoky quartz has the mixed version of Steven and amethyst but also connie and stevens fusion have a different personality or steg both are exceptions sins both aren't gems this can be triggered if they are Also on the same page with the Gem as example also rose quartz the only male fusions are steg rainbow quartz 2.0 since mostly the female part takes it and yes Sunstone is a female and so smoky Quartz
Sunstone as example as the mixed personality of stevens comfydence and garnets protectiveness
I wonder what happens when you put a gem in your mouth and it forms?
They playing just dance that’s why
What’s weird is that they’re dancing with no music in reality and not really making any sounds either
I wish we could’ve seen diamonds fusing but I keep thinking that blues older because she has a more slower mysterious vibe than yellow?
@@VanceKaessinger but in ‘what’s the use of feeling blue’ yellow acts older
@@VanceKaessinger the only realistic way it could have happened is blue and yellow fusing to beat white diamond in ‘change your mind’
@@toonsnooper yeah but maybe yellow could’ve possibly forced herself to act mature and direct towards blue after pink got shattered
@@toonsnooperguys blue has more colony's than yellow so probably she is older
But the real question is WHY IS IT ALWAYS SO SASSY?!
Pink pearl/volleyball Should have been named Pink lasagna in my opinion
Sardonyx is my second favorite fusion
My favorite fusion dance is when they form obsidian
Could you make video about
1) No Good Nick
2) Code Lyoko
3) Cruella
If its ai please tell me how u did it😅😅😅"
To be on the same page, simple
I have a curiosity: is it possible for the gems to fuse with Stevonnie? Considering the fact that Stevonnie is only possible because of Steven's half human side, but the gems and connie have no such connection.
I think it SHOULD be possible, but theres never any indication that its even a thought. Im also super curious about how those fusions would look.
Y’all heard what I heard when the diamond sound
They dance as they dance in dragon ball (dragon ball z for anime people). Its just lifted from the dragon ball fushion dance with a splash of magical girl.
.....because of the fusion dance in DBZ??? where if trunks and goten arent in sync, their fusion into a larger, more powerful saiyan warrior fails????????? is this not known or so obvious no one bothered mentioning it? im so confused
quick question what song did u use in the beg.
Diamonds and pearls by QKreign
THANK YOUUUUU 🩷
What song did you use at the start?
I always thought it was a DBZ reference.
It’s a reference to sailor moon & Giant robots
I'm not sure about this but I think the concept of the Fusion dance originally was meant to be a reference to Dragon Ball
Is this creator actually unaware of DragonBall Z fussion dance? That was CLEARLY the inspiration.
in short, dancing is just a way to synchronise there are other ways to do it
How do you get your videos not copyrighted when you use clips of shows
WAIT, garned tried to teach peridot how to fuse?? What episode is that??
Season 2 ep 26
It was so cute 😭
They at least want to break it down before they do something coll
Wait what was the song in the opening
Yeah but there are some parts where they don’t dance to fuse like with jasper and that corrupted gem and aquamarine ruby
It’s in the video 😼
Each crystals have frequency n the biggest is amethyst it's said that's y is always so popular in those who work with crystals. Tho.. I wonder if amethyst have same frequency if is heated up so much to become citrine 🤔 How would show show it?
I mean
Isn't it oblivious
They need to be harmornize their mind, heart and body to fuse
And the best way to do it it's dance
That is very meta reason I thought you conclude things with a reason from the show
And if they do need to be in sync then how did garnet fuse on accident twice
