For those of you who don't see the description - Coming up to 30 years of the Black album and I've tried to replicate the tone with all my analogue gear. I never thought I'd ever get this close, it really excites me to try other albums and tones. No post processing was done to the recording - what you hear is what you get. Wishing you all the best in the new year so take care and I'll see you then.
Black Album is definitely one of the best mixing/engineering jobs I've ever heard. Probably my favorite analog recorded album of all time. It's so dense, heavy and all is mixed perfectly. That is an album that will never need a remaster or new mix. Perfection, not to mention the B-side has some killer songs.
It's definitely one of the best sounding albums of all time. Audio engineering courses and live sound classes I took always referenced that album when talking about rock or metal music.
I think a lot of people don't realise how the black album tone isn't that far from that of justice, but the entire production of the black album is what really gives it that step up.
THE album from the early 90’s where so many incredible albums were produced. An era when the rock music industry was a money juggernaut. I agree with all your praise; even if metalheads prefer the songs from the previous M records, this album’s quality is undeniable and unmatched
I love Metallica, but your videos diving deep into recreating these tones is seriously inspiring to experiment further, beyond the tone itself. Amazing work, thank you
Your skill at playing Hetfields riffs is fantastic Sir, youre one tight, accurate rhythm player ! Not many are as good as His Majesty Sir James of Hetfield ! And your reproductions of the metallica album guitar sounds could be as close & perfect as any Ive heard ! Respect to you & Great channel my friend !! \m/
This is one of those videos where I wish I could hit the like button 100 times. This album made me take up guitar and I've been enjoying playing it for almost 30 years. Your Unforgiven solo was killer. One of my favourite solos and you nailed it.
Bro that's probably the closest I've ever heard to matching it!!! I agree with you.. other than far beyond driven "The Black" album is my favourite sonically produced album!! 👊🏼💯🏆
Saw a reddit thread talking about the best engineered metal albums and The Black Album came up. What was absolutely hysterical was of course this one guy had to come in and say The Black Album wasn't a metal album. Funniest thing I had heard for weeks.
So many people decide to hate on Metallica for changing their sound - this album is metal asf on par with ride the lightning in terms of metal dude. Some people are so fucked in the head lol
I love your videos. You really do nail these classic tones. That spectrum analyzer is awesome. I would LOVE to run that on Dimebag's tone on "Drag the Waters" to try to recreate it.
The Black Album tone is so thick and full of muscle. Loved it! I always thought the Diezel VH4 was the voice of that album. Great job replicating that sound!
Man I’ve always felt the same way. I always get shot down from more hardcore fans saying the black album wasn’t real Metallica. Too commercial or some crap. To me it represents the pinnacle of their tone and song writing. Great video!
Aye up fella, you proper know your shit pal, am always well blown away with not just your playing but the knowledge of your set ups with amps and pedals....love your channel immensely and it helps me with my playing too 🤘🤘👍👍
Happy New Year to you M8! This year i've discovered your channel and it was one of the bests of all. Keep on the good work with your partner! Wishing you the best and see you next Year ;)
The black album tone is what I base my main distortion on for everything that I play . - I have a Boss GT1 and was able to replicate the sound pretty close to how it sounds without the need to purchasing a Mesa Boogie . I love the replication you did there Lamb , its very very close - awesome Job . Its good to see people appreciating the Black album they way that I do too, too many people claim its too simple and too commercial . to my ears the Black album is a masterpiece in guitar work, inspired harmonies and lyrics , just an overall sonic sound that even the mastering engineers when they listened to it ( these old guys ) were blown away not just as a metal album but in general a real masterpiece of any genre.
Thanks for the video! Great content mate! Tried to go for this tone on my Marshall Mini Silver Jubilee with an EQ pedal in the FX loop, and I must say I got really close even though it is a Marshall. The EQ pedal does a fantastic job. Having an EQ pedal really opens up for a ton more tones. Never tried having my EQ pedal in the FX loop before I watched one of your videos where you compared pedals in front vs in FX loop.
Damn that sounds amazing, your a great player as well...love your channel. The mesa amps are pretty solid amps...I have a 100 watt dual rec head with the matching 4x12 cab woth the uk made v30s.....it sounds pretty good...I have a mxr 10 band eq thru the loop and a boss waza sd1 in the front. ...metallica is the band I grew up listening to and it is awesome and a humble privilege to have a similar sound. Although I played thru a deziel dmoll a few weeks ago, it was on a different level of its own. That is a truly amazing amp....you should try to play one if you can.....
You nailed the Justice Album tone, but you’ve got a little ways to go in order to replicate the Black Album imho. That said, excellent work thus far and I’m sure you’ll dial it in sooner rather than later 🤘🏼
I Love the black album tone, more than the album itself. Also love the MB MK amps! You did an awesome job! I have 2 questions for you: 1. Could you do a similar tone with your Marshall or EVH? 2. Instead of real pedals, did you try to play with your amps in 4cm with a device like Boss GT-1000 or Helix? Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹🎄
Hey, Lamb, i'd love to see your take on some sort of Randy Rhoads tone considering your MXR pedals, Marshall, and Rhoads V in the back....im sure you'd crush it!
Hi! Could you try to recreate The prodigy their law guitar tone, please. I can't find any information about the equipment used to record this track anywhere.
Even tho I’m not a huge fan of the black album compared to the first 4 albums I’ve always thought that meaty guitar tone was the best tone they ever had
Bit like Tool's 10000 Days album. Not everyone likes the creative direction they went in, and the more mainstream focus of that album, but God are those some sick tones, and the production is insane. I've been saying for a long time that was Tool's Black Album. In both cases it was a band that had already made it, and had reached their peak at around that time, and in both cases they had the budget, the studio access and the expertise of a brilliant engineer at the top of his game, and they both created an absolute masterpiece that will never be forgotten. And then they couldn't top it or even come close to it again. Bands have a half life sadly. Some bands smash it on their first album and never replicate it again, but that's rare, Usually it's the second or third album that they peak at, the really outstanding bands keep getting better and take until the 4th or 5th album to get to their peak. But the result is aways the same, you always know when they have done their best work and are declining. It's all downhill after that peak. There are also the rare freaks who can just pump out high quality work for decades, releasing 20+ albums, but even then there is a lot of work in there that gets forgotten, and some gems that stand out. Creativity is a terrible thing when you need to rely on it to pay the bills, because it's almost impossible to control.

Great work mate! Keep it up, very interesting videos
You did a ridiculously good job at it too
Nailed it. I got goosebumps on MFTM
Ace moment
5 ni
Guys I'm telling you that parrot is crucial to his tone. 😂😂😂
Yes he’s so cute too it would not be a lamb chopper video with out him
parrot should do My friend of misery crowd harmonies
No doubt
For this album he needed a raven or one of those big freaky vampire bats on the perch! The parrot would be great for covering Sponge Bob metal tones!
True also why are you everywhere

You're talking about So What and Killing Time?
I agree. In my opinion, Bob Rock's magnum opus. Others can debate whether it was Metallica's.
It's definitely one of the best sounding albums of all time.
Audio engineering courses and live sound classes I took always referenced that album when talking about rock or metal music.
It's a sonic perfection ! No need for a remaster, that's for sure !
GNR Use Your Illusion is another production masterpiece in my opinion, such a great sound. 1991 was a great year for production
Man the solo for Unforgiven was so beautiful and cleanly played.
I think a lot of people don't realise how the black album tone isn't that far from that of justice, but the entire production of the black album is what really gives it that step up.
Amazing what happens when the bass is mastered in correctly
All it took was the first strum of My friend of misery for me to know that you're spot on 😆
Bro I was thinking the same thing
Same bro, easily the most underrated song on the black album
Ayyy, It's my favorite guitar duo on RUclips!
THE album from the early 90’s where so many incredible albums were produced. An era when the rock music industry was a money juggernaut. I agree with all your praise; even if metalheads prefer the songs from the previous M records, this album’s quality is undeniable and unmatched
Oh my god you actually did it you absolute legend. It sounds as identical as it possibly can be!
I love Metallica, but your videos diving deep into recreating these tones is seriously inspiring to experiment further, beyond the tone itself. Amazing work, thank you
The bird is essential gear. 🤘🏼
Wow!! That’s the closest I’ve heard using a real amp. I love these tone videos.
The tone was spot on especially wherever I may roam👍
Wow, it sounds amazing.
Just like the black albun
This is one of those videos where I wish I could hit the like button 100 times. This album made me take up guitar and I've been enjoying playing it for almost 30 years. Your Unforgiven solo was killer. One of my favourite solos and you nailed it.
I appreciate the frequent posts mate. Keep it up.
Did anyone else expect the bird to start headbanging at some point?! :-)
Dude! I almost didn't even play this video until I seen your Eclectus. I used to have a male just like yours back in the 80s. Miss that bird.
I love this guy's excitement man. That's what it's about.
The "Black" album is sonic perfection.
Coming to think about it, TBA was released 30 years ago! Man it still seems like yesterday
I listened to AJFA on the bus bc coach mickey was a metal fan
Bro that's probably the closest I've ever heard to matching it!!! I agree with you.. other than far beyond driven "The Black" album is my favourite sonically produced album!! 👊🏼💯🏆

You sir , you are the Tone Meister. You would be a great asset to any , amp, guitar ,or pedal manufacturer.
Need sad but true cover with this tone. That mesa sounds amazing. Should try to replicate it with the EVH!
Give us some covers with this tone, we beg you!
And new content
Close to 100k subs.
The day will come.
The solo for The Unforgiven sounded awesome. Everything sounded pretty good.
I would love hear this quad tracked
You have a great ear for capturing famous tones.
The 'Whereever I may Roam' section in particular sounded really spot on
Nice bird cam. I just lost my bird so it's fun to see another bird
I love your videos. You really do nail these classic tones.
That spectrum analyzer is awesome. I would LOVE to run that on Dimebag's tone on "Drag the Waters" to try to recreate it.
I've been skeptical about these small 20 watt amps sounding as good as there 50 & 100 watt counter parts but your videos have changed my mind.
Great! Thanks for all yours videos
Fascinating video...I agree, the guitar tone of that album is absolutely perfect!
I saw this tour it was absolutely electric
When they did ONE the explosions were melting my ears !!!!
Love the mic stand for the SM57. Great playing too!
Killer stuff, LambChopper! Thanks a lot!
It's to me one of those albums that'll sound cool and undated years from now.
The Mark 5 /Twenty Five is the best amp I've ever heard/owned.
Wow man love your videos , the most detailed , even the mic sm ! Thanks a lot 💓💓
Never knew you could use 4CM to clamp both the front end and the effects loop with the NS1...cool!
This bird was an unexpected bonus I must say
Wow bro, amazing. So much support from Spain 🤘🤘
The Black Album tone is so thick and full of muscle. Loved it! I always thought the Diezel VH4 was the voice of that album. Great job replicating that sound!
Diezel VH4 didn’t exist in 1990.
Well sure enough! You’re right.
Changing of the guard - EXODUS!!! i’d love to see you do a cover on that song , amazing videos by the way
I see lambchopper, I click like. simple as that
Fantastic tones!
Man I’ve always felt the same way. I always get shot down from more hardcore fans saying the black album wasn’t real Metallica. Too commercial or some crap. To me it represents the pinnacle of their tone and song writing.
Great video!
Great video! Your channel is fantastic!
Love your videos mate, enjoy your playing and find the information you provide about gear very interesting, keep it up!
Aye up fella, you proper know your shit pal, am always well blown away with not just your playing but the knowledge of your set ups with amps and pedals....love your channel immensely and it helps me with my playing too 🤘🤘👍👍
Ian Thompson Well thanks mate, all the best!

Happy New Year to you M8! This year i've discovered your channel and it was one of the bests of all. Keep on the good work with your partner! Wishing you the best and see you next Year ;)
I can't believe how close you get on these tones. The answer seems to always be Mark V + EMGS + 6 Band EQ. Great work!
Just subscribed mate
That is a beautiful bird mate.
You always awesome man
God damn it, I had just convinced myself I don’t need a Mesa amp and I come across this
Sounds Awesome!!
That bird keeps watching me. 👀🤪 Great video
Great video man. Ive been trying to get those tones out of my dual rectifier. Keep up the awesome videos

My favorite album

Sounds great

I would also like to know how close he could get with the Marshall DSL
I've been able to get pretty close to the black album myself on a triple rec.

Love the bird...
Wherever I May Roam cover with this tone. pls
Hey, Lamb, i'd love to see your take on some sort of Randy Rhoads tone considering your MXR pedals, Marshall, and Rhoads V in the back....im sure you'd crush it!
Great video.. I think its even possible to replicate the Black Album sound with STL AmpHub, or at least pretty damn close.. :D
Absolutely, it’s awesome software. Sculpt anything, easier too
You’re amazing...

This bird is is awesome !!!!
Of the three amp rigs, do you have a personal fave? Enjoying the channel 🤘
The DSL
I think james uses the clon centaur in the black album to boost his mesa.....the deep of this od pedal is a big part of his sound....
Yeah !
