Cicadas are eternally linked with Greece, there is nothing like waking up to them, hearing them during the day, going to sleep with them.
Greek produce, food in general is very high quality, e.g. eat a tomato from Greece and then from any other country to understand the difference

When people in North America think of Greek food, they think of Souvla and Gyros with Greek salads that aren't really Greek salads.
The last time I visited Greece with my father, the first thing that we ate was Fried Fish, Vlita, and a Horiatiki -- sat by the seaside. Such a wonderful balance that made me very happy, nostalgic, and missing my Father every day.

It's probably too late for me! At almost 63 years young, I was recently diagnosed with some kind of not so good heart disease. My Calcium Heart Scan score was 462, which means that I have a good amount of plaque around my arteries and in them. Even though I was active, and only 20 pounds overweight, apparently my contemporary western American diet (and i'm sure, genetics) was killing me all along. I thought I was 'invincible' and healthy until this latest 'bombshell'. Now i'm a 'ticking time bomb' that could succumb to a heart attack or stroke any minute... any day... any week... any month... any year, etc. etc. etc.! Sure, I ate a decent amount of Greek food my Yiayia and mom made for us all these decades, but it wasn't enough.

It’s never too late to turn your life around. Genetics are not everything. Change your diet. Start eating a whole foods diet with lots of fruits and vegetables. No processed food. Limit meat and dairy products. Exercise on a regular basis and keep a positive mindset. Don’t forget, it’s you who can do the change and can turn around your health for good. Don’t give up on yourself. All the best!

Lived in Europe several years, and frequently visit now days. The thing that I really miss is the “cafe culture “ in its various forms. Some places in the US have tried to make it work, but I think that US businesses are more interested in their bottom lines to allow customers to spend any real leisure time at a table. For the most part, people here just won’t slow down…for whatever reason. Now, once one retires, that can be a different story…but still no cafe culture.

I am from Belgrade, and there is a reason Serbs love Greece. Here, pollution is a great problem, and living where this problem is more under control is important. The only problem with living by the sea in some places (Montenegro, Dalmatia) is that people live only for summer season, while everything else is dead during winter. I don't know if desireble Mediterranean countries like Greece or Turkey have managed that.

    • @user-bi7xd8ry5p

In Greece, the answer to your question is, "It depends."
The cities are active year round. In fact, during the summer, the cities are quieter than usual since a lot of people go on vacation.
In the countryside, however, things are different. Places like Mykonos and Santorini turn into ghost towns in the winter (Santorini has 15000 permanent inhabitants, Mykonos has 10000).

I am Greek, live in Piraeus and work completely online for a Greek company. I do miss my colleagues sometimes, but there is no way I return to my old workplace to the office. The benefits of working from home for me are far more important than interaction with colleagues.... I do everything at my pace, I enjoy being at home, without commuting I have time for other things like stress free morning walks with my dogs at the beach, and if some day I don't have much work I can even do some chores or gather something to cook without wasting time as I would if I had to be in the office doing nothing. Thus, weekends are really mine for going out and enjoying, instead of having to do the chores and everything a house needs. Yes, it is also true that some days I work more than the usual 8 hours, but I don't care as I do it from the comfort of my home...
I wouldn't change my life for the pre pandemic style...

and NO, i am not in house arrest - someone replied this to me, but couldn't find his comment to reply directly.
i do go out every day, i go out with my friends, and many evenings i go out with my office colleagues to hang out and keep updated on our lives.
i don't need more money for working at home, actually, is as i got a raise, as i don't waste money on bus / metro / taxi and the almost daily "orange juice + tyropita". so i earn more money now than before.
i already had everything required for working online at home, didn't have to buy anything new.
and as far as my job is concerned, maybe AI will do my job in the following 2 - 3 years - this applies also for yours.
good thing is that i am reaching a point where i will retire, so maybe would be better if YOU worry about AI, as i will not see it replacing me.

    • @user-bi7xd8ry5p
      @user-bi7xd8ry5p 2 месяца назад +2

If you want to come to Greece as a student you'll probably live in Athens or Thessaloniki. There, you'll find the same kind of bugs that can be found in any other city. The amount of bugs in your apartment can be reduced by living on a higher flour, putting mesh screens on the windows and any other opening, and keeping your apartment clean.
As for the breeze... During August, Greece has the "meltemia" which are steady northern winds. Other than that it's pretty situational. I must say though, that if there's a heatwave no amount of wind can make you feel better.

Biggest downside in Greece is the bureaucracy related to public sector & government agencies such as tax office, hospitals, police, public administration etc. All dealings related to government are very stressful & time wasting.
