This week we head a few hours north of our Los Angeles HQ to catch up with Bruce Canepa and one his Porsche 959. It’s one of the rarest cars to wear the company’s crest, but he’s certainly no stranger to the thing-after spending over a decade trying to find the legal loopholes necessary to put one on the road in the United States, one tends to form a bond, become familiar. The 959 has been duly lauded for decades as one of the most advanced and ambitious supercars ever produced, but beyond all that it may have also saved the beloved 911 by showing the world what could be achieved with a rear-engine design.

It's one of my favorite motorsports places to go visit. They do Cars and Coffees during the summer where they open up the workshop, and you can go stand next to multi-million-dollar vehicles in various stages of undress, just inches away, no ropes or barriers or anything. The museum and showroom (where most of the put-together cars behind him in the video), which includes a skywalk above the shop so you can view the operations, are open to the public and free daily, and are typically very quiet and uncrowded on non-C&C days.
It's an INCREDIBLE place and worth a trip out of the way. I spent probably two hours there somewhat recently and was literally the only person upstairs in the museum, and the only non-employee downstairs in the showroom, pretty much the entire time.

The 959 has been long time my favorite car ever - and just sparked my love for Porsche. When most of my friends were drooling over the F-40 (basically same era), I was always defending the 959 - and its technical advancements. At this time, a lot of cars didn’t even had ABS - and the 959 had tire pressure sensors. If you compare it to the 911’s which were built in the same era, you understand, that even its design is more than 10 to 15 years in the future. I wish, that Porsche would do a 959 on base on the current 991.2 (or upcoming 992). Not a crazy track focused car - just a car which is elegant as it is capable.

Funny how things go round, and in a way.. come round again.
Some years ago Mr Canepa's company had an advert in a classy UK car magazine [Octane.. ] for a Jaguar XK120 fhc which was amazing. Gunmetal Grey with Burgundy [?] interior and the whole and complete workshop thrown at it.!
I tried to contact the shop but to no avail.. perhaps it was a bit too early for an interweb that functioned.?
But.. a day or two later, a phone call in the early morning.! It was himself, Bruce Canepa.! My e-mail had got thro and he was phoning to say sorry, the car had sold, but it was already at the magazine printers and too late to pull it out. Damn.!
He was charming and sent me a set of quality photo's of the XK120 which I still have, Just the same nice fellow sitting talking on the film here.
    Regards from Poverty Towers.

That's still fast by today's standards and that was over 30 years ago! God I'd love to just drive one, just once, ah well, great video as always and Mr. Canepa seems like a wonderful steward of the car. Thanks, I enjoyed this one very much, I completely forgot how amazing this car was and still is.

The 959 and 930 Turbo were the dream cars of my childhood. Today along with the 964 Turbo they remain my dream and my goal to own and drive at least one of these cars someday. I almost get choked up when watching videos like this. The desire to drive a classic Porsche is still in me and stronger than ever. My childhood bedroom walls were covered with posters of these Porsche machines. I built every plastic Porsche model I could get my hands on. I would scavenge through all the Hotwheels and Matchbox displays to find any Porsche diecast model I didn't yet own. Today watching videos like this and scrolling through autotrader is how I get my fix. Thanks for this fantastic video.

BEAUTIFUL video. Man when Petrolicious gets it right they get it so right. The 959 was certainly a bellwether as to what was to come. Still one of the all time greats. I was SO elated to hear Porsche's mindset at the time referenced in this video. I started my recent Porsche 928 video with this context on transaxle vs rear engine set up and you would have thought I was speaking heresy. Good to hear yet another person reference this important historical context. The 911 being a forever model was not a foregone conclusion in the 80's as shocking as that is to hear today. Lovely video, great interview. Super tasteful camera work.

Petrolicious has several years’ worth of material just in the Canepa Motors’ workshop! For those who don’t know, Bruce Canepa is a racing legend, competing nationally and internationally, including a 3rd at 24hrs of Daytona and a 2nd at Pikes Peak. Throughout his racing career, he’s had close ties to Porsche. The shop is part workshop, part showroom floor and part museum, all of which is free to the public. My son loves the skywalk over the workshop, because you can see, hear and smell the various cars that are being worked on on any given day. It’s too bad the video doesn’t tell more about the shop, showroom, museum and community connection, because some of the negative commenters have the wrong impression about who Bruce is and why he brought 959s in to the US.

I had a 959 poster on my wall when all my friends had Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s. I now drive a modified Porsche 993 turbo S. 😁 love your videos, thank you very much.

959 ... that car growing up In the 80s and 90s you always wish you could see but never would or could. A true unicorn. Ahead of its time

My DNA code got affected in 1963 by seeing the 911 at the autoshow in Amsterdam.
The 959 was compaired in the car magazines to the F40 in those days.
55 years later still following what will follow ....a mid engined 991.x based on the RSR ?
Looking forward to your next vlogs.

There where also a lot people trying to get Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Hondas in that the law change allowed. A couple of very special Audis got in thanks to this man's efforts.
And a whole lot of motorcycles.

Fep when didn’t Nissan’s “R” car dominate in races? The R32 alone has more pedigree in racing than some sports car’s have had in their past 5 generations. And the S15 is just about the king of drift competition. Again, this is only a small percentage.

The Porsches that preceded the 959, were incredible cars. The 959 being the culmination of a brand still artisanal... But the Porsches that succeeded the 959 until the end of the 90's were simply exceptional, thanks to the rolling laboratory that represented the 959. Today, we remain dazzled by this car more than 30 years after its release, because the 959 had this charm combined with the technology focused on the pleasure of driving, far from the current productions or even the steering wheel has nothing to do with the past. Thank you Porsche for making us dream.

A lot of firsts with the legendary 959. First sequential biturbo application, first variable and electronically controlled all wheel-drive system, first variable suspention system, pretty much the first onboard computer, one of the first ever cars with high-tech material mix chassis, pretty much all the modern comfort electronics you'd expect in a car nowadays. From a technical standpoint it was decades ahead of its time. Not to mention its acceleration and pace was absolutely otherworldly in its days. Yes of course there were the Countach LP5000, the XJ 220 or the F40, but those were no wear as technically refined as the 959.
