Thanks Ken. This saved me a lot of money. I'm sticking with the original, as all the upgrades really weren't anything I was concerned about to begin with. The vinyl slicer might be nice, but...meh, I have an exacto knife and a self-healing mat I can put under the machine for that perk. Great, thorough review/comparison. Thumbs up!
Thanks Ken I was sorry to hear that you had surgery, but I'm glad to know you are doing better. I came back ill from the Middle East in Oct, so I've been laying low. I need to rebuy my C, but I think I'm going to stick the first and leave the upgrade alone since its not much of one. The features that the one has doesn't effect me at all really. Thanks for saving us the time and money.
I appreciate you taking the time to post this comparison. I am now confident I don't need this new machine. I have a few more dollars this season to spend on other fun supplies instead!
Ken, love your videos! Just wanted to toss out there the new Cameo cuts a full 12 inches wide and 10 feet long. That full 12 inches lets me cut a beautiful border for layouts. And that little storage compartment on the left side is great and keeps me from losing the small items when on the go. LOVE the sleek new design and it is light, I like that too! *I am upgrading from the old Silhouette Original.*
+ThisCottageBliss1 I have the old Silhouette too! Way back when it was from QuicKutz! I think I bought it in june 2009! I just got the new cameo, waiting for it to arrive!
Ken, having seen several of your videos on cutting machines and the pixscan technology etc etc, I just wanted to thank you for your thorough comparisons. I feel there is no bias to your preferences - they are based soley on ability of the machine. You present and provide an excellent quality of video - you produce an extremely professional production and presentation. I think someone should snatch you up and put you on TV. Create and Craft TV in the UK are coming to the shopping channel screens of the states - you'd do very well as a presenter on there... thank you for your insightful and inspiring, informative videos.
I am a new Cameo buyer and couldn't decide which one to go with. Thank you for making my decision much easier! Amazon.co.uk still sells the Original one for £50 less than the New one, so I am thinking of investing these extra fifty pounds on materials, extra blades and mats. x
I know it is now 2022, but I just received the 2014 New Silhouette Cameo, but nothing that came with it indicated whether it was the Original or the New. Thanks to this video I was able to determine that it is indeed, the New Silhouette Cameo (2014) ......Mine has the little blue marks on the left side, as well as the storage compartment, and the digital display. The only think I find that is missing is the cut tool on the back....I'll have to see if there is a replacement available. I look forward to watching more of your videos.....and learning all I can about this machine. Who knows, maybe I'll find I can conquer this challenge and will upgrade to a current model. I love crafting and I think this is going to be so much fun. Glad I found your video. Thanks
Hi Ken, Love your videos. They are so helpful and fun to watch. I am a new subscriber to your channel. I have the original silhouette cameo version 2. I am still learning to navigate through the software, watching videos and trying to learn what the symbols on the left, top and bottom do. I'm getting better but this is new to me. I love the designs I have cut out, the part I know how to do is easy so far, LOL (which ain't that much but I do try). At this point for me it would not be cost effective for me to upgrade to the 2014 model. Thanks for explaining things so clearly in a way that even I can understand.
Hi Ken, I just purchased a Cameo and with the price point $50.00 between the old and the new I went with the newer version. I think I read something about that the touchscreen cameo could also scan the image into the design studio rather than using a camera as an input device for the Pixscan technology?
Hi Ken! I really like your videos about the Silhouette Cameo! Now that v3 of the Silhouette Cameo is coming out, are you going to do a comparison between all three versions? I would love to watch this!
Informative video. I will stick with the original Cameo. In the end, it is the blade, motor and cutting ability that matters, and it seems the new Cameo is identical to the original in cutting.
+Arash Tirgari I agree seems me digital is the only difference not worth forking the money out if they both cut the same i'm curious to see if they do any further updates with the new cricut imagine coming out to keep up with the changes. personally i'm not a must have the newest shiny thing. If it works it works !
Great video Ken, I have the original Cameo & personally as I mainly cut vinyl I would only upgrade If they had made "Cameo 2" a 15" cutter instead of the current 12"
Hi Ken, thanks for a great video, i have my silhoutte cameo for almost two years now( the older one). i am very pleased with it so far. Do you think i should get the new one due to wear and tear of using it frequently? i use mind quite a bit, cutting vinyl materials, vinyl stencils and heat transfer vinyls?
Hi , I've Ben looking for a machine but I've been between the silhouette cameo or the circuit explore. I'm thinking of getting the silhouette cameo because the shapes and designs are cheaper and you could do a lot with the design space, what do you think?
Your video was very imformative. I have a question that I haven't found the answer too. When i design my image on my computer and then line up my material to cut on the mat, I waste a lot of material because the image lines do not match the mat lines. What am I doing wrong?

I am trying to decide on whether to purchase the original or new silhouette cameo. I have found starter packs for the same price for both the new and old. Is the new silhouette cameo still having the touch screen lag problems? I was not sure if there has been a software update to correct this issue since the video was made. Also, I noticed that part of the butterfly became caught while the new cameo was cutting. Is this a more common problem with the new cameo or is it the same with the original? Thank you in advance for your advice!
Great Video. Few questions. I have a silhouette portrait. Can you move the rollers on this to be closer together for small pieces of vinyl? What good is having the cutter on the back of the printer when the vinyl gets spit out the front when it's done being printed? Love my portrait but debating if this is worth the upgrade
i will add to my list Thank You For Watching. If you are not already a subscriber, subscribe here: bit.ly/1MnKcNn. Also check out my amazon store: amzn.to/1TGQPCE
Hi Ken. Great review! I have my Cameo for 3 years now and it first cut through my papers as well anymore eventhough I changed blades. Is it true that after 3 years, it's bound to fail and heed a replacement? :(
During the comparison of the right-hand ends, you mentioned the SD card socket and how it was replaced with a USB port and how the new one can print from USB sticks. But, did you know that the old one can do exactly the same from an SD card? I think going to a USB port opens this feature up to a few more people, but the functionality is still there on the old one. I keep a library of items I cut regularly on an SD card and can pull them up and cut a new sheet without having my laptop connected (using the old Silhouette).
Hi Ken, I noticed that the touch screen had quite a lag sometimes when you selected a function. Does this affect the functionality of when you are using your USB port (if you've used it for cutting)?
so if you have the chance to buy the older version vs the newer one (never owned a cameo before), which one should you get? I have watched so many videos and read so many articles and it seems to come down to touch screen vs buttons, are the buttons faster/more responsive?
Thanks for the thorough review. I just bought the original one (didn't know there was a new one) as an early Christmas present to myself during Black Friday. It has the vinyl starter kit, which I haven't used yet. After watching your video, I wished I had the USB and the sliding cutter on the back, but I think I rather have the buttons than a touchscreen, so I'm happy with my machine and have been using it since I got it. My wishlist for upgrades include a deep cut blade (like the Cricut Explore has) and a sort of attachment to the back of the original machine with the sliding cutter for vinyl. That would be great. Are you taking notes *****? ;)
I got a new sihouette Cameo for Christmas this year , but it is not the new one you talked about in this video, it is the original one. I wonder if that is why I am having problems, maybe the old one does not work with the new software.
Hi Ken :) me again LOL!!! .... watched your first video on this which as always was very thorough and easy to follow and understand.... I can't understand why they bothered to do the upgrade really....they should of just made a new model....anyway... the markings for where the mat goes...well you could actually make the marks clearer yourself LOL!!!.... it is still clunky in the way it cuts....and is loud and clunky when unloading the mat....quieter when cutting got to admit but still looks like it is struggling to cut to me....LCD screen / touch screen, why didnt they provide a stylus with it might be more helpful....touch screen not a good idea for people with not so good eyesight.... the vinyl cutter is a good idea, but again you can improvise and make a cutter yourself to do the same thing.....storage compartment....yes is Handy :) USB...yes I like that ....different rollers so as not to leave imprints on your materials yes that sounds good..... same blade, blade housing etc..... so will get the same cuts as the old one as you shown.....so not much going on there....... as I have mentioned they would of done a lot better I think if they had just made a new model and extra features etc.... ok so no I dont own a silhouette cameo..... I was thinking of buying one a while back until I heard how noisey and clunky it was.....during my time of trying to decide another cutting machine came on the market.....(not mentioning name as this is a cameo video) so I am hoping to get that one sometime soon..... this of course is only my opinion....there are a lot of crafters out there who are happy with their cameo and love using it.....all I can say is Happy crafting ...Have fun and enjoy making things with whichever machine you have or upgrade too :) Thanks Ken, as always a great video from you :) Happy crafting and Have a wonderful day :) Magz :)
Ken - thanks so much for your informative videos. I own an old cricut, doesn't even have computer accessability, so no design space etc. I'm recently retired and really getting back into my card making and wondering if the cricut explore would be something I would be able to easily learn to use. I'm somewhat limited in my computer knowledge as well. Do you think the explore set up and design space is set up simply enough for someone like me?
Hi! I'm wanting to get a dicut machine to use to decorate my classroom, as well as do some crafts like vinyl and heat transfers. Would you recommend the Cricut Explore or the Silhouette Cameo? Thank you!
Thanks for the review. It would be nice to see if the new Cameo had a better registration mark recognition. Years ago, that was most annoying problem or maybe it was just because of the software. I haven't used my old Cameo for awhile but I hope the software developers have made this better. I have to buy MTC software instead of the stock studio before because of that very frustrating problem.
Your video was very helpful and well done. 2 questions I am having trouble finding information on and you may be able to help. I want to cut vinyl letters for painting signs. Which one has the ability to cut a few feet in length. Which in your opinion is best for font. Thanks again for the great info. I subscribed:)
Ken, You really do outstanding tutorials. I realize my question comes straight out of a comic book. Couldn't be funnier or more fictional. But, if you could only purchase 1 machine. Which would it be and for what main reasons. What's the best link for actually learning to use these web/computer shared (no cartridges) machines? Thx Ken. Super Xx's, Lynda, Utah
I just watched your Explore video, Brother video and the two Cameo. I have the original Silhouette Cameo and I do love it and am thinking of selling all my Cricut cartridges because I don't use them and they take up space. What do you think about that? Mine does make a lot of noise. I have cleaned the rollers and the bar that the blade runs on. Is there an oil I should oil it with? This is very helpful and I am glad I watched this. Thank you. Linda
Hi there - I had the very first (manual load) Silhouette machine when the company was owned by Quickutz - the Quickutz Silhouette. That made the same noise too - I rather like to think of it singing while its cutting and enjoying it's work... It also means I can walk away and still hear it and be reassured that its still cutting! I must be mad!!! lol. Before I bought the Cameo when it was first launched in (I think) 2011, I purchased the Cricut Expression (pink Breast Cancer one). I used it once since then - and I bought that in April 2010! I then bought the new Expression 2 when that came out - got it out of the box, tried it out and put it straight back in the box - I thought the touch screen technology was incredibly over complex - and having seen many demonstrations of the Brother Scan and Cut, feel that it is even worse - Silhouette is by far the easiest to use and design with, manipulate ones own shapes etc etc. So for me, noise or no noise, the Silhouette wins hands down. Just think of it singing lol.
Thanx I just bought the new Cameo and can't move any images from new designs folder to folders like pattern or font folder. Any idee what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks for the video ken! I'm looking to purchase a machine with the soul purpose of cutting heat transfer vinyl, to make shirts. Most info I find recommends the cameo 2 for that, and the cricut for everything else. Would u recommend one of these 2 machines, or an alternative? Thanks ken!
I am worried that my Cameo may need replacing. It isn't working as well as it did originally. Doesn't always cut the full design. I was thinking of switching to the cricut but I have all the designs for the Cameo so perhaps this is the reason to stick with the Cameo. Do you know if there is anyone who might repair Cameo or is it just not worth the cost?
Hi Ken, Thank you for this video. I will stick with the original Cameo. Although I bought it back in 2013 and used it for a while, it was then packed up. I am trying to get back to it but so lost. Can you please tell me which software version should I use and possible to connect with you on skype for a few tips? Thanks
I have an opportunity to buy a 2014 for 125 plus s&h. Now my question is it worth buying, I dont have any knowledge on these or any for that matter 🤦🏻 If i decided to get it i will have a lot of videos to watch.
The intro graphics last around 24 secs til you begin talking, you could easily shave that down to 5-10 seconds. A lot of youtubers, such as Technobuffalo, do a spoken intro followed by a short 5 sec intro graphics which breaks it up nicely, looks good too!
I purchased the Cameo first. Loved it until the Explore came out. I LOVE the Explore. So easy to use. The only thing I don't like is Design Space editing capability. This is where I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition. So, I use both, but prefer the Explore for ease of cutting.
Thumbs up!
breeziedreamz awesome thanks. i think most people are sticking with the original
Thanks Ken I was sorry to hear that you had surgery, but I'm glad to know you are doing better. I came back ill from the Middle East in Oct, so I've been laying low. amb7412 yeah i just do not see a reason to upgrade
I appreciate you taking the time to post this comparison. I am now confident I don't need this new machine. I have a few more dollars this season to spend on other fun supplies instead!
Marla Harris not enough difference for me!
I know this video is older, but what a wonderful, and thorough, review! I upgraded yesterday, but only because my original died.
BMcG0184 Oh thanks!
Ken, love your videos! Just wanted to toss out there the new Cameo cuts a full 12 inches wide and 10 feet long. That full 12 inches lets me cut a beautiful border for layouts. I agree! Ken and his videos are awesome!
I just purchased the original Cameo. Didn't even open the box, yet. Thanks for making my decision way easier :-) I know I'm gonna love it.
Yasmeen Bee it is a great machine!

Dani Balkanska awesome to know
Thank you so much for such a thorough comparison! I'll definitely be sticking with my original Silhouette.
this is the 5th time today I was looking up Silhouette reviews and clicked on yours without realizing!!!!
+Maddiml so funny! thanks for watching!
Really great, thorough comparison and well-put together video - thank you.
thanks for watching
Another very thorough comparison, Ken, thanks for sharing!
Kim Reed you bet
Great video! I have the old one still! I’ve had it since 2013

Thanks
Thank you. This was a very thorough and well-done review. Extremely helpful. Much appreciated!

I am currently filming this as we speak. The machine has had some issues and that is why it is taking some time to be released
Informative video. I will stick with the original Cameo. In the end, it is the blade, motor and cutting ability that matters, and it seems the new Cameo is identical to the original in cutting.
+Arash Tirgari I agree 100%
+Arash Tirgari I agree seems me digital is the only difference not worth forking the money out if they both cut the same i'm curious to see if they do any further updates with the new cricut imagine coming out to keep up with the changes. personally i'm not a must have the newest shiny thing. thanks Ken for this excellent tutorial, very helpful with staying with my old cameo
jogry blok yeah a lot of people are
Great video Ken, I have the original Cameo & personally as I mainly cut vinyl I would only upgrade If they had made "Cameo 2" a 15" cutter instead of the current 12"
Iain McDade agree sad to see it was not a major upgrade instead of just cosmetics
I have the orignal Cameo and it still works great. I just upgraded to the Cameo 4.
Thanks for sharing. I hope it works out for you.
Great comparison. Very helpful. Hope you have a super week. Hugs, Susan
susan sharp HUGS!!!!!
Hi Ken, thanks for a great video, i have my silhoutte cameo for almost two years now( the older one). i am very pleased with it so far. Hi , I've Ben looking for a machine but I've been between the silhouette cameo or the circuit explore. I'm thinking of getting the silhouette cameo because the shapes and designs are cheaper and you could do a lot with the design space, what do you think?
Nixies I prefer the explore, however it comes down to he software you like.
Your video was very imformative. I have a question that I haven't found the answer too. When i design my image on my computer and then line up my material to cut on the mat, I waste a lot of material because the image lines do not match the mat lines. What am I doing wrong?
Carolyn Vance thanks. the image is in the far right corner of the mat?
Love watching you both.

+gamble1997 The cutter is used for people who use rolls of vinyl. You can put a roll of vinyl on then cut it in the back, Yes you can move the rollers
Hi Ken, Can you please do a video on Silhouette Cameo 3 cutting fondant or gumpaste. Thank you
i will add to my list

Karen Moore should work with the new software.
Do you think that the older model would be affected by any future update? As in I would be compatible with them?
Marilyn Imboden no the older model is just like the new model
Thank You for a detailed review.
My pleasure!
Thank you for such a thorough review!
Angel Fifield no problem!
Hi Ken :) me again LOL!!! .... watched your first video on this which as always was very thorough and easy to follow and understand.... I can't understand why they bothered to do the upgrade really....they should of just made a new model....anyway...

Happy crafting and Have a wonderful day :)

Lynda Barlow Cricut Explore is more basic.
Hi! I'm wanting to get a dicut machine to use to decorate my classroom, as well as do some crafts like vinyl and heat transfers. Would you recommend the Cricut Explore or the Silhouette Cameo? Thank you!
Cricut Explore for ease of use. A lot of teachers on the silhouette cameo do not have time to learn the software

Paula Gale Thank you Paula. I need to read this often. I get so sucked in to the newest thing when I do love my Silhouette.
+Paula Gale I have the original Quickutz too!!! It still works, but i decided to get a new one
Thank you for putting this online. It convinced me that I don't need it!
+P.S. Urias yeah!
I love shiny new things but I will stick with my trusty hard working model. This was brilliant though in helping me decide many thanks
Gaynor Southerton AWESOME
which machine would you recommend to print decals that go on car windows? and whats the difference between a decal and vinyl? thank you
silhouette. Has a larger print then cut area
Thanx I just bought the new Cameo and can't move any images from new designs folder to folders like pattern or font folder. Any idee what I'm doing wrong?
***** you cannot click and drag?
Thanks for the video ken! I'm looking to purchase a machine with the soul purpose of cutting heat transfer vinyl, to make shirts. Most info I find recommends the cameo 2 for that, and the cricut for everything else. Would u recommend one of these 2 machines, or an alternative? Thanks ken!
Merk Seventen HTV works great on both, the silhouette cameo can cut HTV on a roll which has made it the choice for many people.
Do you know if the silhouette cameo is compatible with the surface pro 3?
Marilyn Imboden not sure on that sorry
I am worried that my Cameo may need replacing. It isn't working as well as it did originally. Doesn't always cut the full design. I was thinking of switching to the cricut but I have all the designs for the Cameo so perhaps this is the reason to stick with the Cameo. Do you know if there is anyone who might repair Cameo or is it just not worth the cost?
+Fay S not worth the cost for me
Thanks Ken for another great video. I agree, no need to buy the new one.
Kathy Hanusa yes not to much to get excited about!
Hi Ken, Thank you for this video. I will stick with the original Cameo. Although I bought it back in 2013 and used it for a while, it was then packed up. I am trying to get back to it but so lost. Can you please tell me which software version should I use and possible to connect with you on skype for a few tips? Thanks
Darshana Shah I wanna buy that cameo but I have the same questions about the software I wanna make sure if is still up to date

I just bought a sillohette cameo and it won't turn on do you have a my idea why?
+Texas silva the power adapter that came with it might be having issues. Some of them had a recall. I would call thier customer service and ask them,
+Kens Kreations thanks, I called that said they were gonna send me a new one 😊
Do you know if circuit draw space will work with the cameo.
as long as it is saved as a Jpeg, SVG, etc.
I have an opportunity to buy a 2014 for 125 plus s&h. Now my question is it worth buying, I dont have any knowledge on these or any for that matter 🤦🏻
If i decided to get it i will have a lot of videos to watch.
There are a lot out there
Thanks for the reviews. Polite suggestion though...cut your intro screen from 25 secs to about 5-10 max!
TheVeyron81 perfect. The entire into or just the kens creations info?
The intro graphics last around 24 secs til you begin talking, you could easily shave that down to 5-10 seconds. A lot of youtubers, such as Technobuffalo, do a spoken intro followed by a short 5 sec intro graphics which breaks it up nicely, looks good too!
quick example of what i mean:

TheVeyron81 Thanks so much for the feedback.....it is exactly what I am looking for!!!
TheVeyron81 Thanks so much I really appreciate the feedback.

Om yn Awesome
Thanks for this comparison... I think I will stick with my original machine.
Beautiful1 I think a lot of people will be!
Hola! The New Cameo is Cameo 2?
I purchased the Cameo first. Loved it until the Explore came out. I LOVE the Explore. So easy to use. The only thing I don't like is Design Space editing capability. This is where I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition. So, I use both, but prefer the Explore for ease of cutting.
pfergie1974 I agree 100% with what you said!
Thanks for the info :)
goodjob thanks for the vid
Thank you for feedback
