As a queer person I wanna see more representation that’s just “a queer person doing things who happens to be queer” than making queer their whole personality. Munda does this in Fireborne.

Thank you! I’m actually NOT queer but even seeing this ticks me off as well. If you’re going to do that kind of representation, do it right!

"I fold laundry to..." is honestly the greatest compliment. If I'm folding laundry (or doing dishes...) to a RUclipsr it means 1. I KNOW I am not gonna get bored because if I get bored, I will want to change the channel, and there's no way that's happening mid fold. If I get out of the folding or washing flow, that's it. The rest ain't getting done for a week. I need to know I am not gonna be tempted to switch to something new 2. I am more interested in listening to that RUclipsr than I am in whatever audiobook I got on loan from the library. That book is being returned in 12 hours and I'm only 40% of the way through, it i still chose the RUclipsr. 3. I know what I am getting. I can't tolerate surprises during stressful chores. This might seem like a dig, but I respect people that have finely honed their craft to the point that I KNOW I will be getting top quality content I enjoy, no surprise "well, that vid was a dud...."
And yeah, I've washed dishes while listening to you!

The reason readers feel like they aren't being listened to is because they aren't. Literary agents and editors choose manuscripts based on their personal preferences and don't look at the reviews of books they rep - just the sales numbers.

Well, the mangaka behind Hunter x Hunter also authored Yuyu Hakusho, and is married to the mangaka who created Sailor Moon, and he was amongst the earlier artists who was drawn into Shonen Jump, so I believe he's got a unique position to work with other artists in his field, as well as to teach and learn from them, in a sense uniquely advantaged. If you haven't read (or watched, the Anime is great) Yuyu Hakusho, I give it a strong recommend. You can really see how he started simply and worked into a more complex system. (Because Yuyu Hakusho, everyone has pretty much 1 special power that gets elaborated upon as time goes on.) Also starts the trend of the 'Tournament Arc' in Anime.

Literally reading poetry is the greatest writer’s hack. I always turn to poetry or song lyrics when I hit writer’s block. The metaphors are 😍
Favorite Manga: my shelf says Sailor Moon, but that’s mostly nostalgia. Truly Ancient Magus Bride is my favorite.
    The art ❤
    The story ❤️
The fact we don’t jump RIGHT into romance despite the title ❤
Favorite poetry is a lot harder. Wendell Berry for his reverence of Nature but poems by Major Jackson and Neil Hilborn still live rent free in my head. Also Mary Oliver (Nature again).

On the men thing, it's also that the men who support the fmc seem a little lackluster. Like they only know three types of guy. It feels like a missed opportunity almost. So much potential and they go nowhere with it. And I know people r like "there's already so many male leads as a whole" and yeah there is, but what I'm looking for is queer men with a positive look on masculinity that actually have variety amongst eachother. And have healthy male friendships. And there just isn't a lot of that rn, or at the very least people aren't vocal about it.
Another comment I can see people making is "why should men be the main character when the authors and readers are women?" Which only half makes sense. People love Six of Crows and the mc of that is a guy. You don't have to BE a guy to vibe with his story. I'm neither, and how many YA/NA mcs are there who don't have a gender? I've literally never seen a protagonist who I related to on the gender and sexuality front. Not even once. But it's not like that prevents me from relating to and liking the characters as a whole.
I just think people should write better men. YA seems like it's gotten formulaic and I don't like it.
(I also like ensemble casts with people that actually matter to the story. Not just Girl, Love Interest, and Bad Guy.)

"Treasured acquaintances" is such a diplomatic way to phrase that. I'll be adding it to my vocabulary.
My favorite poetry book is cliché but i just love Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur.
Fav anime/manga is FMA:Brotherhood and InuYasha. Can't pick between the two and you can't make me lol

@dontfretreadbooks As someone who has volume 1-11, I HIGHLY recommended it as well. Not just for the magic system, the ART style is beautiful to look at. What I like about the series is that if you take away the magic, you can still apply the advice, moral lessons, and themes to real life challenges.

I want to know why I see no men in the YA space writing books I’ve heard of! I feel like YA has been considered too girly of a genre and now I’m seeing so few stories about boys growing up and fighting their battles. Most male-centric books I read in the genre are queer, which I love, but I’m not seeing them otherwise.

I'm aroace and adore romance (which is apparently shocking) but I know I'd dislike a lot of the romances in mainstream YA rn. My favorite part is the bond and the narritive parallels n stuff. Lots of the romance rn just feels like attraction between two people that don't like eachother. There's no reason for them to actually be in love. They're just a guy and a girl in the same room that think eachothers hot. And I think it's cheap. They don't give off the vibe of someone you could make a life with, or sit in comfortable silence with. There's just no bond there.

all those comments are so interesting to me, as someone who really doesn't read ya at all, specially the one about boy protagonists; i tend to read adult fiction books, and tend to prefer having women as main characters for personal preference (a mix of centering women in my life due to being a lesbian and simply not enjoying reading about certain topics from the eye of men), so it is really interesting that ya fans look not only to their own personal preferences (like i do), but instead to ya readers and as whole and try to change (i guess) what the main demographic of ya is... i think that that comment in itself could open a long discussion in of itself, really! but as for recommendations of manga and poetry....
my fave manga is monster, by naoki urasawa, it is such a great psychological thriller that really changed my life, and i've been keeping up with chainsaw man since late 2019, and it is a very mature psychological investigation of abuse through a lens of battle shonen.
i don't currently have a favorite poetry book bc i tend to read poems by themselves and not in anthologies, but i always go back to the works of mario quintana, one of my favorite modernist brazillian poets; i've also been enjoying reading anne carson's poems, although i'm not really skilled in reading poetry in english bc rhyme and rhythm aren't intuitive to me due to it being a second language

I've never really dug too deeply into modern poetry, but there's always been some lines I've remembered from like Byron ("hen-peck'd you all" is a phrase that's never left me lol) and Coleridge or Frost. That's one of the things that's really fascinating about poetry, even every piece of punctuation contributes to it.

7:02 i was just thinking this when watching a video about a book with bad world building and inconsistent magic systems. Some of these authors should check out anime fantasy systems. Some are wacky, but a lot of them are pretty solid. It's interesting too how solid the foundations of some of these power systems are just coz the author wrote down some basic rules and followed them. I also have Spin of Fate, will read that hehe.

I've always kinda liked poetry since I was a kid but I never knew how to do it or where to find it, so it kinda just remained as intrigue. Until a couple months ago when a bought a few cuz u talk about poetry a lot and I was like "oh yeah, I DID wanna check out some poetry." I've only read a few poems from each book to get a feel for the vibe, but the ones I think I liked the best were from "Here Be Monsters: Gothic Poetry" by Matt Lake.
And I've probably mentioned a bunch of times now how my favorite anime is One Piece lol.

Cowboy Bebop, Michiko e Hatchin, and a buncha Gundam and Digimon series for fave anime.

Recommendation for anyone who reads this and resonates with what was said in the video: The Tide Child Trilogy by R.J Barker. Based on my limited knowledge of what constitutes YA fantasy, I think it might align more with adult fantasy, but it suits most of the mentioned criteria nonetheless:
    - Compelling male protagonist
    - Non-heteronormative romantic elements that ARE NOT the main focus of the story
    - Strong platonic dynamics
    - Fascinating fantastical world populated with equally unique mythical creatures
    - Distinct narrative voice
While I have my problems with the series as a whole, it's about ships made of BONES, y'all. Definitely one of my favorite series I've read period. By the way, my favorite anime is Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (it's the only version I've seen.) And I don't have a favorite poem, but my favorite short story is probably The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
