  • Archbishop Sample comments on the statement of Archbishop Cordileone regarding Speaker Pelosi being denied access to Holy Communion.
    +++
    Last week, Archbishop Cordileone announced that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi may not be admitted to Holy Communion in the Archdiocese of San Francisco.
    And now, not a few of you have been asking me about it. I want to talk about what the announcement actually means, so we can discuss this in a thoughtful way.
    I’m mostly talking to those of you who are Catholic and are “personally opposed” to abortion, but might say you wouldn’t want to impose your beliefs on others; or, those of you who identify as faithful Catholics but who are in support of abortion rights.
    I want to start by saying that what AB Cordileone did is as much about Holy Communion as it is about abortion…What does it mean to receive Holy Communion? It’s about being united to Christ and to one another in a unity of faith.
    To understand why, it’s essential to understand what the Magisterium - the authoritative teaching body of the Catholic Church - has always and consistently taught about Holy Communion. That the Eucharist is the literal, real, true body and blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. The Real Presence of God Himself. The Holiest of everything that is Holy. And that to receive Communion is to join in unity - in common union - with Jesus, and through Him, it is you joining in real union with the Church, Her teachings, and with other Catholics. The grave significance of receiving of Holy Communion should not be underestimated. It’s spiritually dangerous to approach the awesome power of God in Holy Communion with anything less than the respect it demands.
    There is no debate on what Holy Communion is. The Catechism, the authoritative summary of the Catholic faith, is clear on this. So are the Bishops throughout the world, and as far back as St. Paul and the authors of the Gospels, the Second Vatican Council, Pope Francis and all the Popes before him. And there’s a recent document from the US Bishops that everyone should read called “The Mystery of the Eucharist in the Life of the Church” that’s also clear on this. There is no ambiguity.
    Once we understand the significance of Holy Communion, it becomes essential to recognize that the Catholic Church has certain rules that govern the Sacraments. We Catholics voluntarily live under these rules because Jesus gave that authority to the Church. Canon 915 of the Church’s law says “Those…who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to holy communion.”
    The Church clearly teaches that abortion is a grave evil. And that public advocacy for, and support of, abortion is - objectively speaking - such a manifest grave sin.
    What AB Cordileone did was actually an act of pastoral love and care for Speaker Pelosi, and for ALL those entrusted to his pastoral care who might have been led astray by her public support of the evil of abortion.
    That’s why AB Cordilione did the right thing.

    Thank you for making this video. We need our bishops and priests to remind us that abortion is gravely wrong and if we insist in still receiving the Eucharist we are condemning ourselves to hell unless we truly repent of this grave sin. I think we need to be reminded that there is a hell and by our choices we can end up there. Maybe we need a refresher course on sin. We need something to shake us up to realize that being Catholic is an awesome gift but is a huge responsibility to make sure we act the way Jesus did since we are bring Jesus to the world. St. Thomas clearly explains why the death penalty is not "murder." How can you compare an innocent child in the womb to some unrepentant murderous psychopath? A child is a gift from God, a criminal or murderer is harmful to society and offends God. You espouse a despicable and idiotic perspective.

    • @stephenlewis4477
      @stephenlewis4477 2 года назад

      Abortion and support thereof is for the ability to kill the life of a preborn child. To include death penalty under the same umbrella is dumb thinking. No one is marching around calling for more deaths by the death penalty but this is what people are doing who support abortion - killing preborn children. In the past 10 years according to the CDC there have been 7 million plus abortions in this country . Death penalty deaths? About 324. Don't you get it ? If not ,no one can help you.

    • @AJKPenguin
      @AJKPenguin 2 года назад

      Firstly, the unborn are human beings. Secondly, the context of the commandment is for innocent life, hence it's why the acts of abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia are considered a truly intrinsic evil, in every and all circumstances. Likewise it's a travesty when the innocent are put to death by the state.
      Third, the death penalty has limited need for the developed world but it may be required to protect innocent people from the heinous.
      If the guilty are remorseful and accepted their sentence with humility, honor, and dignity. . .hopefully having been treated with dignity and respect until the day. . .they will, more than likely, be given the Grace to enter into the Kingdom.
      The first to enter Heaven, redeemed by Christ, was the thief; St. Dismus was explicitly told by Christ, after showing his pure contrition, he'd be with Him in Paradise.

      The only people who care at this point what Bergoglio has to say are his fellow Jesuits and CINO liberals. It doesn't change the fact that to receive the Eucharist unworthily is a grave sin. No Pope can change that fact, if he does, he is a heretic. His Holiness' personal practice is not orthodox if he knows a person seeking Communion is in a state of mortal sin. Just add it to the ever-growing list of near-heretical statements our Holy Father has made throughout his Pontificate.

      @@kyrieeleison2793 Based upon your comment, it is only right that the 69% of sexually active Catholic women (and 89% who at some time in their life) use an “artificial” means of birth control, as defined by the Church to include an IUD, the pill, etc., must also be prohibited from receiving Communion, along with all the men who have employed a condom to the same end. These shameful Catholic women and men who unrepentantly use birth control measures, sometimes for 30 years or more, that are not approved by the Church, must be held accountable.
      When you selectively pick and choose who is an unrepentant sinner, from among many, you’ve certainly cast that first stone, and do the entire Catholic Faith a disservice. I pray the hatred in your heart, toward Catholics, and especially His Holiness, will subside. Confession before next taking Communion is suggested.

    • @emouselOregon
      @emouselOregon 2 года назад

      To put Pope Francis in context in saying this, he also indicated that he was never aware of someone openly opposing church doctrine like this who then presented themselves to him for communion. Unlike what has been portrayed by proponents of abortion, he has been VERY clear that abortion is an intrinsic evil. To argue otherwise is misrepresenting his statements.

    • @steves3783
      @steves3783 2 года назад

      @@emouselOregon The Archbishop of SF has stated, and I quote “Canon Law, which has to do with the Sanctifying Office of the Church. It is not in Book VI, which is the Church’s legislation on penal law. Thus, this is not a sanction, or a penalty, but rather a declaration of fact: the Speaker is “obstinately persevering in manifest grave sin” (canon 915).
      I agree, abortion is evil, and a grave sin. And any woman who obstinately perseveres in manifest grave sin by employing contraception (sometimes for decades) to prevent or terminate pregnancy should be held to the same standard as the Speaker, and refused Communion.

    • @emouselOregon
      @emouselOregon 2 года назад

      @@steves3783 the problem with that reasoning is that ordinary folks don't generally wear their use of contraceptives on their sleeves and actively and publicly promote expanding legislation of such as Pelosi has repeatedly done with regard to abortion, so an archbishop taking that sort of a step on a blanket level with regular folks is extremely impractical and unlikely.

    Unlike what Archbishop Sample claims in this video, there is vigorous debate and disagreement among bishops as to whether denying communion to politicians is proper. I would also add that this is a uniquely American phenomenon. No politicians who support abortion rights, for example, in Italy or Europe, where abortion is also legal, have been prohibited from communion on that basis. If it was so clear and so obvious, one would think other bishops worldwide would have already acted.
    Here is a helpful message to the culture warriors, including Archbishops Cordileone and Sample, from a brother bishop.
    “Pity the grocery shoppers in Buffalo, the school kids in Texas, their grieving families, and everyone now more afraid than ever of doing those simple, everyday things.
    You’ve got to wonder about reasons for refusing reasonable limits on gun ownership, which are inspired by the common good and offering protection from harm.
    We readily identify things like abortion and capital punishment as life issues, which Catholic teaching identifies as absolutely wrong under any circumstance.
    But protecting the earth, our common home, or making food, water, shelter, education and health care accessible, or defense against gun violence... these are life issues too.
    Some people want to repair the scandal of pro-choice Catholic politicians by refusing them the Eucharist. But that’s a misguided response for at least two reasons:
    As Jesus said, it’s the sick people who need a doctor, not the healthy, and he gave us the Eucharist as a healing remedy; don’t deny the people who need the medicine.
    Also, to be consistent, to repair the scandal of Catholics being indifferent or opposed to all those other life issues, they would have to be denied Holy Communion as well.
    Better, I think, to put the Eucharist in the hands of such Catholics in hopes that one day soon they would put their hands to work on behalf of life, in defense of all life.”
    --Michael O. Jackels Archbishop of Dubuque

    • @kyrieeleison2793
      @kyrieeleison2793 2 года назад +1

      None of that comment is worthy of any serious discussion, it's full of red herrings and what-about-isms and completely sidesteps the issue. Confession and penance is the "medicine" for these grave sins, not the Eucharist. The Eucharist helps prevent us from sinning through reception of God in both our body and soul through sacramental grace. To receive such a gift unworthily (i.e. with unrepentant grave and mortal sin) is to commit sacrilege and is a horrible offense against God. Archbishop Jackel is not teaching orthodox Catholic doctrine and should clarify his statements. Only the foolish CINO liberals will fall for such ludicrous argumentation.

      For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 11:29
      The medicine you speak of is administered in The Sacrament of Penance it is there that you are made clean and worthy to recieve the Lord having been sorry and made an Act of Contrition for the sins that we have committed against the Lord. If we truly have meant that we are sorry then we have also made a solemn promise in confession. "O my God I am Heartily Sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all because they Offend thee My God, Who art all good and Deserving of all my Love. I Firmly resolve with the help of thy Grace to Confess my Sins, to do Penance, and to Amend my Life."- Act of Contrition.
      As we see we recieve His Grace to confess our sins and this is needed before we approach Holy Communion worthily. By His grace we revieve in Penance. We then also promise to do penance for the wrongs we have committed and then also We make a firm resolution to amend our lives from that moment forward. Anything less than that firm resolution to amend our Life and it's only empty words.
      If a true solemn penance is made and we are truly sorry we will try our best to not offend God again in this same way. If I confess that I support abortion in the confessional and walk out of the confessional and have not made a solemn promise to amend my life and just continue supporting abortion with no change after being talked to by my Confessor or in this case, His Excellency Archbishop Cordileone, then I have not made a firm resolution to amend my life. And since she is a public figure must make amends publicly and repudiate her pro abortion stance publicly and then go make a solemn confession. It is then that she will recieve the medicine needed to heal her of this public crime of murder against the innocent. And at that point can then also recieve the Eucharist because she will then be in a state of Sanctifying Grace.
      The medicine is given during the Sacrament of Penance.

      Would that the US had the abortion laws of Italy! Italy at least prohibits most abortions after 90 days. Here in the US we are approaching 200 days (generally speaking, the laws differ by state). But from what I understand, Speaker Pelosi would allow even partial birth abortion - basically legal abortion up to and including the moment of birth! She even voted against a ban on killing babies who somehow survived a botched abortion once out of the womb! (The "Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act".)
      I'm sorry but, while I may find issues with politicians who do not sufficiently protect life in other areas, I can't see anything approaching this level of evil on either side of the political aisle on any other issue.
