I've been a Mercy main for a very long time and I know how important is to stay alive and boost people, but yesterday I got a Rein in my team that was getting killed all the time for his own mistakes, and said "This f****** dmg boosting Mercy" he was expecting me to be a healbot, we lost that round and the next one the other support took Mercy from me, saying that they knew how to use her better, we lost the game faster with her being a healbot the entire time, I wish people could understand that only healing doesn't work for anything, we are called support for a reason, we can do more than that
people are SO WILD. the other day, a junkrat player said to me "love a mercy who damage boosts, y'all the real mvp" so please know that some tanks and dps players do understand how important damage boost is and do understand how much impact a good mercy can have. it's so frustrating to run into people who don't understand the support role, but you're doing all the right things. yes of course we all make mistakes and the best part of overwatch is how much there always is to learn, but clearly, you are trying to get value from all aspects of Mercy's kit and in my book, that's doing all the right things. fixing the mistakes and increasing your knowledge of the game and the intricacies just comes with time. so! I'm sorry you have had teammates who don't understand the contributions you're making. that's very frustrating and disappointing and discouraging. but I want to tell you there is hope and there are teammates out there who will notice and acknowledge and hype up your contributions.
also, it's always the worst when this kind of nonsense comes from tanks because we (rightly) invest so many resources in them so they can make space effectively. I sweat so hard trying to help my tanks because I don't want them to stop being aggressive. I don't want to give the message that passive plays are good. I want to reward them and help them do tank things good lol so when tanks don't understand exactly how we're trying to help them, it's especially disappointing.
@@sethescope I think the only thing we can do is continue to do our job and let the babies cry all they want, if they don't understand how we do things and how important our abilities are then they need to shut up
@@ILoveMyDoggoFoxy generally, yeah I basically agree lol our job is to support our teams and contribute what the team needs from us. what they need isn't always what they want. let's be honest, when we're not playing Mercy and we die, part of us always does want to be ressed lol at least part of me always does! even though I do know that's not always the right play. so there's a difference between what they want and need. and if theyre just throwing a tantrum, yeah absolutely ignore them. it's not our job to keep our teams happy. our job is to be a good teammate and to support as best as we can. just because someone's unhappy doesn't mean we did anything wrong. but it is also important to be open to feedback. now, most of the people we will play with don't give feedback lol most of them will just be assholes if we make a mistake. but occasionally, someone might give feedback, and I think there's value in being open to politely worded feedback, and I feel that way about feedback in life in general, not just in the game. but again, there's a difference between throwing a tantrum and giving feedback, and no matter what, no one is entitled to be an asshole over how someone did in a video game. no one, under any conditions.
@@sethescope You're right, the problem with me is that absolutely nobody has ever tried to give me feedback in all the years I've been playing, the only things I have received are very good compliments or horrible insults (usually from people that just want me to put my staff in their ass the whole game), I had to learn everything alone, and something that I learned quickly was to just ignore people in chat unless is something really useful for the team, kinda sad that I can't see people being good and help :(
I'm in a different rank than this Mercy player, but there are always things I can learn from reviews of their gameplay, so I'm looking forward to learning from this video! tbh, I'm just always excited to watch mercy gameplay, and I'm always excited to see someone else enjoy my favorite hero. I hope this person is able to learn a lot from the review and I hope I will see them in my games soon 😎
20:56 "it's manipulative, but it is what it is" me: you're damn right it is! I will support my team despite themselves! 22:39 I actually hold down right click by default instead of left click. it's a tip that niandra has given out. it helps you get into the habit of damage boosting first. you can always tap healing or switch to healing if they need it. I think it's a helpful way to get into the habit and start learning the balance between damage boost or healing. just hold down right click by default. something about phrasing it like this helped me a lot, so maybe it will be useful for someone else too. what I like about playing support is that it's about helping your team and there are different ways to do that. so holding down right click by default has really helped me train myself to think of this as support, not healer, because I started to see healing as just one of many options
One more micro thing I noticed is that a few times she was right next to a ledge, but instead of using the ledge's natural cover capabilities, or using it to maneuver, she would just continue SJing. This is disadvantageous and will be punished in higher (even slightly) ranks where all cover is our best friend. On highground, we can jiggle-peek the ledge to keep beam up, stay LoS of enemy, and avoid any sort of pressure unless the enemy invests resources, in which case you are guaranteed to have GA off cooldown and a good visual of teammates to fly to. Another thing to keep in mind while climbing is that having our wings out makes our hitbox larger, so that is another reason that flying ALL the time may lead to bad times. It's an aspect a lot of Mercys don't realize, which is why I mention it here. Anyway the biggest thing is damage boost.
yes this!! and sometimes, you don't want to angelic descent when falling, even when there's no downside to flying around generally. angelic descent makes a mercy VERY vulnerable, for the wing hit box reason that you've described, and also because you're falling more slowly and thus more predictably. not so much of a problem in this game and this person seems to have a good handle on what they can get away with in their rank, but just as you said, they will get punished for more things very soon and it's always best to start unlearning bad habits/things that are easily punishable in higher ranks now rather than later
I love that you say "our" like Mercies are an endangered moth species on National Geographic and you're a wise ancient Mercy teaching the young ones. Which honestly Mercy mains are endangered with how bad the support experience is rn.
@@willyboi1105 Hahah that isn't how I meant it! I got too immersed and started using first-person to refer to the hero. But I agree that the support experience is so miserable and unrewarding currently. Discourages both experienced players as well as those who are learning. Kudos to anyone who plays support currently. Tbh the comp rank "decay" thing has turned me off from playing comp yet this season... compounded with being a support main. It's hard to be motivated to log in. :(
6:20 "yes, you have to heal, but you also have to win the team fight" I want to SCREAM because that's it! that's absolutely it! that is the crux between a healer and a support. don't get me wrong, in some games, there are healers and they heal and that is their primary function, and that's okay. there's nothing wrong with that. but overwatch is a different kind of game. yes, supports can heal, and that is an important tool, BUT winning the fight comes first. sometimes winning the fight means healing, but not all the time. sometimes healing is the wrong play. sometimes letting someone die in favor of damage boosting them is the right play. FUCK. I've never heard someone say it so succinctly and clearly. it's so obvious but at the same time, people get so caught up in "heal your team!" and "you can heal so you should heal" and "heal your team when they are low" when that fundamentally misunderstands how support players need to approach the game.
One thing to keep in mind with Mercy damage boost is understanding the damage that each character can do and understand how your 30% damage boost can affect their oneshots. A normal Genji Blade needs 2 hits minimum to kill a squishy, even if he dashes through them once (slash is 110 dmg, dash is 50 dmg). With 30% damage boost, slash + dash = 160×1.3 = 208 damage. Congrats, Genji can now oneshot with just slash and dash, just like when Ana nano him. Your unlimited damage boost is equal to Ana's ultimate nano in that it lets Genji do his slash dash oneshot. I'm sure we all know about Mercy damage boost Sojourn which lets her oneshot with a railgun headshot again. But do you know that Reinhardt deals 85 damage per swing? 2 swings is 170 damage but what happens if you damage boost him? 170×1.3 = 221, Rein can twoshot with his swings now. Firestrike deals 90 damage so Rein could also swing + firestrike.
THIS. something I focused on when I wanted to start improving was thinking about opportunities to damage boost. the idea of figuring out how to know when to heal or damage boost is very intimidating! it's so complicated and there are no easy answers. BUT thinking about opportunities to damage boost is easier. Most Reins want to throw fire strikes at enemy spawn door when they're on defense. so when I would see a Rein going to do that, I would damage boost it. when I knew Moiras would want to throw a damage orb, I'll take a second to damage boost it. 30% is SIGNIFICANT, and a good boosted fire strike into a group of damaged enemies can get multiple kills. basically, thinking about specific abilities that can benefit from damage boost is a really easy way to contribute a lot of value really fast.
@@sethescope i've played this game for five years and *this* is how i find out you can damage boost firestrike and moira orbs. this is so embarrassing. thanks for commenting this.
