My paper route was from Cedar street to Gaul street and up and down Chatham and Gaul as well as Allegheny. Ethel’s had the best hoagies and cheesesteaks. Grew up 3100 Tulip street. Joined the US Navy and now live in Florida. Your videos are great, keep up doing your walks they are fantastic.
From the archives of our PHILLY CAPTAIN...Great video about your growing up in Port Richmond...Always exciting when remembering about the past great times.....TOODLES..
Incredible my brother and I were talking about Gracie and John today regarding eating a Ethel’s cheesesteak hoagie! Oh my childhood memories! Lived at Almond and Allegheny Avenues
"Ethel's Steak and Hoagie" was my Nana's store. My Aunt Grace and Uncle Vik ran the store until it's closure. That store was the utlimate fixture, and they sold pretzels for a dime until they closed in the 90s. Thank you very much for this, very kind of you!
Mommy Yegals! Best penny candy in all of Port Richmond. Seemed like that row of candy went all forever! I also remember pink sugar popcorn. Anyone remember Pott's water ice? I think it was on Clementine street, very little store, buy radioballs there (water ice/ice cream), they had great penny candy too. I do remember The Hobby Shop. Alot of memories. Great video's, keep them up. I'm enjoying the memories of the neighborhood. Left years ago, great reminiscing. Cohocksink playground still there? Used to go to their pool and they had great carnivals every summer.
I remember see Kenny Rodgers back up band (thats how they were advertise) at a carnival. Here is a video I made at Cohox. ruclips.net/video/VTVC1q2WF8s/видео.html
My grandparents and father lived on the 4500 block of North Colorado Street, Philadelphia, PA. He told me a lot of stories about growing up in the area before he got married and moved away. I love hearing all the stories you tell, keep them coming
Grew up on Gaul Street. Between Madison and Westmoreland. So many memories. Mama Yagel thought I was a boy when I was little. She made me cry. Lol. Harry's Luncheonette was on the Corner of Gaul and Westmoreland. Went to Nativity. Sr. Anna and Sr Agnes were mean nuns. Tall Ships was Gaul and Allegheny So So many memories.
True story about the hobby shop. I used to drive there to buy model planes to build and paint. He had anything you could think of. The elderly man in the store was a nice guy and I remember he had a dog in there to keep him company. The store had models from the floor to the ceiling. He did pass away as his daughter called my office around late 99 or 2000 to tell me after she found my business card in the store.
Thank you for the information. He was a really nice guy. His wife went to Nativity. I had to walk her home after mass one day. She was feeling light headed. So whoever it was thought it would be a good idea that a child walked her home.
@@ThePhillyCaptain That was my Aunt Jean & Uncle John. (Actually, my mom's aunt & uncle). At 1 point, they had 4 pomeranian dogs. They both were very loving, caring, and generous people. Aunt Jean was very religious, she attended mass at Nativity BVM daily. Unfortunately, she was bringing Uncle John a grapefruit for breakfast and, as she was climbing the stairs, she took a piece if the grapefruit & it lodged in her throat. She was in a coma for a while, but finally passed. Uncle John lived for a few years after that, but he too passed away. I do miss those amazing prople. They loved all of those around them, and they were not afraid to show it and share in it. I can still see their gold colored Lincoln parked in front of Northeast Hobby Shop. Thanks for posting.
thanks for posting brother , Ethels was awesome, best cheesesteaks around , John he made the pizzas , like carnival style , it was great , I always told him "John , don't cut the pizza" because I was eating the whole thing there
I think the pizzas were 3.50. They had a small pizza oven. I am glad you liked the video I made a few other Port Richmond videos. It was a great place to grow up.
Hey ... do you remember a storefront (private residence) located somewhere across from the hobby shop. They had some really cool models in their storefront. I think I remember a giant crab (monster movie style), a Whooley Mammoth, creature from the black lagoon, and like 3 more models in the window. I don’t think they were ever changed out.
I’m not from Port Richmond but I believe the John from Ethel’s is a guy I knew when I returned home from the service in 1974. We worked together in NJ but he left in 1976 to run his mother-in-law’s steak shop on Clearfield St. John’s last name was Wikiera, I’m hoping he’s the same person, he was a super friendly person, sadly I believe he passed!😢🙏
I lived at Clearfield and Collins. Mama Yegals hated kids for the most part. God forbid if you put too much mustard on your damn pretzel. I still remember...."We're gonna start charging 5 cents for putting too much mustard on your pretzels." Needless to say I put even extra on it. The pretzel counter was right in front of you when you walked in. Good orange powdered jelly slices however. AHhh the mustard nazi. She reminded me of the old spinster from hansel and gretel. Tony's pizza at Belgrade and Madison was one of my favorite pizza places. Wow. Shame I can't get pizza out here like that. There was a restaurant to the NW of M.Y. owned by a dude named Jerry. Really nice guy and had great food. His wife was hot and also was a nice person. A lot of kids started going to mass at OLHC instead of Nativity because the masses were only a 1/2 hour. Probably because of Father Rudy as well. JERKOFF! What memories! Thanks for posting.
Did they sell ears of corn one summer? Lol I swear I think it was this pizza place that did it. They were like a quarter each, we'd grab one with a slice.

Watching as a fan of the late writer David Goodis, although he was obviously writing about the 40s/50s and 60s.
Thank you.

Did you know Charles Tozzi? He lived a few houses next to you.
My brother had a sandwich named after him. THe spunky burger.
Is this area being gentrified yet? This particular block doesn’t look to be but I was wondering about the neighborhood as a whole
Sort of but not much.
Go #eaglesnation love the video 📹 🙂

I have no memory of mama. I always got my pretzels of Gracie at Ethels. They had a paint brush to layer on the mustard,
@@ThePhillyCaptain This was the mid to late 70s my friend. Lol. Maybe she was gone by the 80s.
