The camera used to film was first made in 2006, and is still used in a lot of things today including recent things like black swan and the walking dead. Idk who told you they used older cameras. (2006 isn't old for a movie/tv camera)
William Lauzon did you ever get the ccs catalogues in the mail? I remember looking through there and ordering boards, t-shirts and hoodies on my parents credit cards.
no it's not weird. All of his experiences on set as an actor has prepared him for this moment. He knows what the rhythms of shooting a good movie opposed to a bad one should be like on set during filming. He's worked with great directors before. He was once a kid, acting, so should know how to work with them to try and get best performances possible. He grew up during the 90s. Hip hop is his first love so he is definitely going to treat the hip hop music selections with care, he got Reznor to do the score. Skating is a big part of the film as well obviously, so he's gonna make sure that is treated with love as well. He probably spent 3-4 years writing the script and it's his first attempt at directing. I'm sure he wanted to get it right plus working with A24 and they know how to put writers and directors in the position to make a great film. I'm excited for the movie and excited for Jonah. He seems like a genuine person, I think that's key to being a successful writer, director. He may end up being a better writer and director than actor. Here's to hoping this is a great start to a second career for Jonah!
I can relate to this movie so much it was almost hard to watch. Being 13, sleeping on the floor of my friend's house after dropping acid and smoking weed for the first time... Waking up just as the sun was beginning to rise and all of us skating off into the day. That's all we did. skate. Nothing else mattered. Well maybe getting as wasted as possible. And Connor, who couldn't do any tricks but filmed everything. There was a lot of suffering in most of our home lives but none of that mattered the second you arrived at the spot.
Its so true same here w my older friends... we just use to chill and smoke and drink beers... i just smoke squares they smoke weed... they would skate too i never really learned 😅... we just talked n laugh at ourselves n my depression was better somehow... for 2yrs I was best friends w those guys but after a tragedy happened the crew split...we were never the same... i never saw those guys again since they left and I went into deep depression n drop out of high school... so much shyt happened... never told anyone what happened... to this only my best friend knows...
me too! '95 grad...feels like yesterday that whole era. I grew up crazy jealous of 80s teens and finally some 90s nostalgia has me grateful for my own decade.
This hits home it is litterly exactly how I grew up my house was crazy as shit so I just always stayed out skating and sometimes didn't come home for a week and almost nobody at home even noticed lol and all of my skate crew was my family until drugs divided our friendships some chose drugs and some chose prison. The 90's was the best and the early 2000's I miss those days and remember them like it was this morning.
Same man I didnt talk to my parents ever No curfew we just did what we wanted. And yeah drugs some of my friends went that way and we grew apart. Definetly Awesome time to be alive kids nowadays are screwed all they have is boring fortnite.
I grew up in Southern California and skateboarding was life during elementary and middle school. Most of my friends are either drug addicts, gang bangers or dead. Life is crazy man.
Ummm... I grew up in the 80s.. skated then, and throughout the 90s... Never had any of my crew act or do any of the shit you listed, and I'm an old ass man. It must be a generation thing.
Beautiful film and great trailer. As a Hungarian, I get all goosebumpy from that Omega track, getting such an unlikely revival in America. Its placement in both the film and the trailer is masterful.
“A lot of times, you feel that our life the worse but I think if you looked at anybody’s else’s closet you wouldn’t trade your shit for their shit. So we good” honestly that hit me I complain to much 😭😗
Ah. If you look at the fisheye clips I don’t think they are vx1. Probably some hi-8 or VHS. VX came out in 1995 and most filmers probably couldn’t afford them right away. This is “Video Days”, “Trilogy”, “Questionable” era. Some stuff during that era was VX but a lot wasn’t.
Jonah Hill killed it with the directing with this film. A lot of stuff hits close to home with Stevies character. The self destructive mentality throughout hit me pretty hard.. The scene where he was hurting himself with the hairbrush, after stealing from his mother. and choking himself with the game controller wire brought on some past emotions in my own life. The entire story was well put together, and what was more impressive is how realistic the ending was, wasnt over the top, nor anti clemactic, it was just life. Great film. Well Done Jonah.
One of my best memories as a child is going into my brothers room, often without permission and turning on his radio and cd player, but then he would see me and listen to music with me. We would talk about the music and lyrics, try to decipher meanings of the song. Good times, but it is sad to see not everyone had a good brother like that apparently.
those were begreat. deadpool vhs now is worth 300 dollars. but on the real tho, release it like almost round 3 skate video where you sell a real copy and a bootleg copy that says "give this to your friend who would probably bootleg it anyway"
I remember seeing Dazed and Confused, in the theater, and enjoying it quite a bit, as the town I lived in was much like in the film. The 90s had a nostalgic rebirth, and blending of hippie, goth, punk, and hip hop culture come together. There were all the clicks, including the skaters, but I had friends in every group, dated girls from every group. Our town would put up the no skateboarding signs everywhere their was a gathering. But there were a few that the city would leave alone, to control all the trespass calls. Cops would usually, just take your board, and make you get your parents bring you to get it back. There were some crazy guys, that would threaten to shoot you if you skated the rail at their business. What I remember most fondly, was all the great bands, I got to see from 90-97ish. The first three Lollapaloozas were really awesome.
Only A24 would let Jonah Hill write and direct a film that's not a comedy, but a drama. And only A24 might actually come out with an amazing result out of it.
"That's why we ride a piece of wood.. what that does to someone's spirit"... after a long battle with addiction, days when I feel super bummed out for depressed I just go ride my board and take out all my frustration. Dunno why I ever stopped riding but it's becoming sort of a drug itself. Idk that quote just resignated withe me
I was born in late 88 so I’d say it had only a few years that I really remember but have some real fond memories of growing up during that time. This movie really brought that back for me. Especially the skateboarding and clothes.
ITT: A bunch of people saying "I was born in the 90s, this makes me sooo nostalgic!" even though this should only truly evoke feelings of nostalgia for people born in the 80s.
Exactly!! Only late 70's to the 80's babies are truly lucky to have been either a teen-young adult to have enjoyed and lived …..I mean really LIVED, lol the kick ARSE ERA!! WoooooWhoooo!!!
Right, how dare young people be born whenever they're born., They don't have rights to memories and feelings like you 80s babies. What would the internet do without people like you letting other people know they're wrong about something?
I cant say I can relate to a getto upbringing. But I guess they prefer to make movies about those neighborhoods because there's more drama to catch there.
@Pr0D1GY taking shots on a 7 month old comment? Obviously you can make a good film out of anything as it's just a setting and not a narrative. Some settings are innately more interesting than others though but that's a matter of taste and dependent on the individual.
Just watched this and had to come here to say that I loved it. Appreciated the older brother coming around at the end and the mother finding them in the waiting room. The complexity of life. Well done.
Trailer gives me goosebumps. Brings out a nostalgia I ain’t felt for a piece of cinema in a while. It’s like watching a two minute snippet from my own adolescence... Can’t wait to see this on the big screen!
This is exactly what it was like. The Shorty's t-shirt, the crews, the mentality. It was the best time of my life. There are no cell phones so, no internet really. You could just live in the moment. I felt free
looks and feels a lot like the mid 80s. really not much difference between those two periods if u were a skater kid other than clothing styles and trick progression.
That's the exact point. Him and stevie are having a conversation he says mom was different when he was younger, he said he heard them shagging a lot (lol. Also or the older brothers birthday their mother talks about what she was doing at his age, being pregnant at such a young age and raising a child they hint that she probably wasnt a good mother, hence the older broth being the way he is.
I'm kinda young watching this movie, but I will never forget this trailer and the first time I saw it back in 2018 when I was 12, as a skater it's still one of my favorites, it's just amazing
I was born in 88 and this movie is a literal representation of my childhood. Skating, smoking, drinking, fucking around with your friends, going to parties. So nostalgic.
@im married to my child Bro the youngest kid in this movie aka the main character is supposed to be 13 in this movie. Which means he was born in the 80's only a few years older than me. My whole elementary and all the way through middle school was in the 1990's. I know a thing or two about the 90's as well.
@c m He was 10 years old in 1998, he definitely can remember the 90s and be nostalgic for that decade. I was born in 94 so what you said would be true for me.
I really enjoyed this film when I first saw it because it so closely mirrored my own life. I was a 90’s kid about the same age as Stevie. I came up in urban skater culture with a mix of friends my age and older and we did all the same stuff portrayed in the film plus worse. Honestly it’s kind of amazing that I lived to the age I am now considering so many of my friends from back then are now gone for good because they fell harder into drugs and the whole lifestyle than I did even though I was right there with them through it. That said this movie also depresses the shit out of me because those days are gone forever and I miss them and can never go back. It would be pretty fucking weird for 40 year old me to show up at a skate park today after all. Life’s just boring now and I don’t don’t know what to look forward to anymore. For those of you who are still young and out there living the life enjoy it because you’re gonna miss it like Hell one day and you can never go back.
N Williams i hope you’re doing alright man, hang in there. There’s always shit to do, no matter what age. Try and do new stuff, make changes to your lifestyle. If you ever need anything reach out to those around u
Jonah mf hill, you absolutely blew me away with your knowledge of how kids actually interact with one another. This movie seriously reminded me of my childhood, though I wasn't born in the 90's, the skate life was the absolute sh*t, and how you portrayed it was just so accurate. Great movie
Fantafaust Feb 88', babyyyyyyyy- the last gen of kids who weren't raised by computers and we didn't get home internet until almost middle school (or understand the importance of two phone lines) lol Even with that, tho, I def still missed out on some stuff (and didn't realize it really til watching "Everything Sucks" this year). The older I get, the more I realize how cool the 90s really were, comparatively. Pete and Pete, Are you Afraid of the Dark?, Kablaam!, All That, Animorphs, Doug, Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, Goosebumps... most of those probably wouldn't even be allowed to air for kids by today's standards. 90s Nick, ftw!!!
The 90's sure were great. My computer access in school was playing Oregon Trail in the "computer lab" lol I didn't like Pete and Pete :P but I did like 2 angry beavers and 2 stupid dogs! Can't forget Rocko either. So many great shows, but I leaned on the spooky side, Eerie Indiana was one of my favorites. Your list just reminded me, I should really get all of the Goosebumps episodes, since I have all the books in digital. Thanks! :)

The best thing about of this movie is that none of the kids are actors. Jonah hill just found them on the street skating and was like “you guys wanna be in a movie?”
yeah it's insane bc their performances were amazing. jonah hill thought it was easier to get skateboarders who can skate and teach them how to act instead of getting actual actors and teaching them how to skateboard..
AwesomeFolds yah but with different idea. most movies are just repeats of the same concept. even the earliest movies r just wives tales with different stories.
Been working on a 90s film and we’re still deciding whether to go wide or shoot in classic 90s aspect. This definitely shows me that you can get away with the latter. Very impressive, Jonah. Seriously, very impressive.
I wasn't really around in the 90's (born in 1996) but it's funny how similar it stayed into the late 2000's. This is exactly how the guys I skated with were, how we kind of rolled. Poor kids during the recession, rolling around town, listening to 90's stuff like Wu Tang and what not. I haven't skated in years, but I sometimes get nostalgic. I sometimes want to grab a board I bought and find people to skate with, but all the old guys are in jail or just fell off or if smart moved on to careers (can't blame them, can't stay down there). It'll definitely be a good movie I think.
Miss Melle Yeah. Looking back, a lot of the other skaters I met were pretty shitty people. Vandals, trespassers, etc. Constantly doing drugs and assaulting people. Damaging property (graffiti, rubbing butter on concrete or other stuff to grind and breaking the stuff, seriously scratching up and denting rails that were often new, costing tons), doing drugs, shoplifting, etc.
John Meda I just started skating again after a 20 year break, best decision I ever made. Just find a good local park.. there’s nothing but love from the people you’ll meet

Because they actually care about artistic films instead of fast & the furious 20 one last ride for family..... 😂
Was JUST thinking this
A24 and IFC have some of my favorite films
I love it when they use older cameras when they they make a movie that takes place in the past, lol sometimes I forget Im older then the kid that plays Stevie. Really felt like a film from the 90s.
The camera used to film was first made in 2006, and is still used in a lot of things today including recent things like black swan and the walking dead. Idk who told you they used older cameras. (2006 isn't old for a movie/tv camera)
@@Dim.g0v he's probably just referring to how it was shot on 16mm film.

For some reason all A24 movies do, I think it’s a stylistic choice .
I like how they put the camera footage at the end

I have a feeling this is gonna be an incredible nostalgic trip for so many people.
Melanie Anne Ahern This feels nostalgic to me even though i didn't grew up in the 90's

Yeah, the feeling of your shit getting kicked in by your dad and your older brother brings back all the memories...
Right
HalfBaked Still the best years ever! I got beatings daily from my mother to the point blood was pouring out of my mouth but I'd do it all again lol
god bless my older sister for sneaking me into the premiere of this movie on a school night when i was grounded. 😂
Idk why but I’ve literally watched this over 20 times now. this is my favorite movie of all time and I haven’t even seen it
Bro im telling you that ending song is hypnotic
Same here bruh . Already brings back memories growin ‘ up in the good

same bro im gonna see it this weekend, and im tryna watch kids tomorrow on like amazon or some shit because i looked and it wasnt on netlflix
This was a great time to be alive, they have it down. The hair, clothes, skateboard culture, the attitude and... the FEEL!
William Lauzon did you ever get the ccs catalogues in the mail? I remember looking through there and ordering boards, t-shirts and hoodies on my parents credit cards.
Pedro Xeta Totally glory days, tonnes of Alien Workshop.
The music too.
That SFII shirt is out of place though, no one wore that type of shit until the mid 2000s.
I meant more that you just wouldn't see this type of novelty shirt around because it would be really hard to get.
is it weird that i trust jonah hill to make a great film even though he isnt known as a director?
gotta start somewhere and this seems like a good ass start
no it's not weird.
Michael Miramontes I felt the same way
Listen to him on the breakfast club learned a lot about him on that show been working on this film for 3 years and based on his life
Or what he experienced as a kid not his true story don’t get that confused
As a guy who came of age during the mid-90s, I consider this film a literal masterpiece
The first paragraph was literally everything I did too..
Meanwhile when I was 13 I was playing barbies at my friends sleepovers 😭
i hate how sad and normal this is
I can also relate to this I mean cuz I’m 13 and doing all of what this movie is, this movie is real man it, it’s real
It literally looks like the 90s. Its scary to think this is a period film...I remember like it was yesterday.😭
yeah i bet they used those stupid vhs cameras, cuz they look like 90s skate videos prod in bloom
shadowseer07 same. Was such a great time. I graduated in 93. I have such love for the 90s

FACTS
He shot it on super 16 film, he said in one of his TIFF press conferences
you can tell by the image that it was not shot on a vx
That is why I said if...

I really fuckin love the 90s but im a 2000 kid.... 90s seems like a fun time

@Pr0D1GY taking shots on a 7 month old comment? Obviously you can make a good film out of anything as it's just a setting and not a narrative. Some settings are innately more interesting than others though but that's a matter of taste and dependent on the individual.

I know the older brother was a complete jerk but I actually felt bad for him.
Chastity Creamer he was a dick cause he cared about stevie
The scene where Stevie yells at him and he cries hit me
Chastity Creamer that’s the point. He didn’t know how to express how he felt. He was trapped and was hurting the ones he loved.
and im pretty sure he got abused cuz he said "mom was diffrent and used to smoke"

@im married to my child Bro the youngest kid in this movie aka the main character is supposed to be 13 in this movie. Which means he was born in the 80's only a few years older than me. My whole elementary and all the way through middle school was in the 1990's. I know a thing or two about the 90's as well.
@c m Lol, so true. You called this kid out.
@c m wow so cool u lived the 90s😓
@c m He was 10 years old in 1998, he definitely can remember the 90s and be nostalgic for that decade. I was born in 94 so what you said would be true for me.
I got chills watching this, I haven't seen something this real in a minute. Big ups to Jonah Hill man.

Trailers are designed to make the movie look good
The best thing about of this movie is that none of the kids are actors. Jonah hill just found them on the street skating and was like “you guys wanna be in a movie?”
yeah it's insane bc their performances were amazing. jonah hill thought it was easier to get skateboarders who can skate and teach them how to act instead of getting actual actors and teaching them how to skateboard..
thats actually amazing

Nah
Haha true
Miss Melle and that’s why there was such a big decline in the sport.
