I haven't heard this song in yrs. I always thought it's a really super good song. anyway it just floated into my head I looked it up and I'm now after yrs enjoying it again.
hey mojorisen74, you young whipper snapper! lol 🙂 I was just listening to the latest remastered version of THIS! - THE single greatest pop album of all time! - FACT! - The part that's the hardest for me to get used to is the fact he pitched it WAY up in speed to increase the tempo! - This original speed mix suddenly sounds like a drudge by comparison! lol Merry Christmas! Judson & Buddy! - God Bless You ALL !!!
Hideaway was the song that introduced me to Todd Rundgren. I remember going into an old record store and buying Anthology and worrying when I went to the cash register if there would be that many good songs besides that one hahaha. Needless to say fast forward about 24 hours and a new fan was born.
i assume you read Paul Myers' book where Todd talks about how he records his vocal tracks - right on the spot, dubbing in the different harmonies as he goes along with no advance preparation. thinking about that while i listen to this, i'm in awe, in case i wasn't already
Interesting! This is not the same as the track on my copy of "Demos and Lost Albums". Mine is similar to your rough demo mix, but it's in Bb like the record, and the vocals seem to be farther back in the mix. Yours is in E (which is where I think it was really recorded) and soundsmore compressed and distorted than mine, like it's from a cassette as you mention. Maybe that accounts for the difference. Or maybe they're two similar but distinct mixes.
Hideaway B/W Emperor of the highway was the first single, Bang the drum all day B/W Chant was the second. There was also a promo single of Hideaway that was edited with a fade out at the end.
@libratem Todd used to play with speeding or slowing recordings down when the tempo's weren't right, or if he wanted to segue into another song that had a slightly different key. Other tunes he's done that to are The very last time and Time Heals. I don't like the backing vocals on this version, they were neat to hear but I'm glad he chose to record them differently
I could listen to Todd's vocals all day - I never get tired of hearing his voice.

I love this soulful rough mix
Nice to hear these vocals! Cool! Would love to hear more if you have any and thanks!!
Lush arrangement! I much prefer this wall of sound over the paired-down album version (for as good as it is).

It's always great to hear the creative process at work!
Love this version best-l Todd"s creative process is genius!

Its interesting to hear the background vocals on this demo version, but he made the right choice by changing them for the album version!
i like this version
Actually, I like the bg vocals here. Forgotten is that this was the single from TEPTAE, and not "Bang The Drum." Go figure.
Love this stuff! Thanks for posting, mojo.
was it this magnificent track - or was it 100 others - or 50 for other bands - that Todd is examining as this photo was taken?
"As if touched by God" , just like Mozart - you don't get many like this, lap it up!!
Cheers,
Alan

Soundcraftsmen eq's. He auctioned them off about 20 years ago. A buddy of mine has one of them in his studio
