The worst thing for me regarding Tyler Shields, is that I get the impression he's lying about not seeing other people's works, when he's creating such similar shots that would be nearly impossible to accidentally recreate without having studied.
Absolutely. If you ask ten photographers to shoot the same model at the same location, the photos should not look the same. From what I’m seeing, he is the perfect example of “when you order something online vs. when it arrives. “
Wow. I just discovered your wonderful, highly detailed and historically accurate and analytical channel’s videos about fashion and editorial portraiture photography. It’s so rare, and so wonderful, to encounter someone who is willing to say something accurate and truthful about this business like you have here, rather than either gushing with unwarranted fake praise, or lowering the discussion to snippy undetailed, seemingly often personal criticism of work that on the surface is technically highly proficient (like, for example Meisel’s) … criticism that comes off as just personal ad hominem attacks and gatekeeping in a nasty business full of arbitrary, talentless people acting as the angry snarly lap dogs on behalf of those that have the “real talent”. You’ve displayed some real courage here to identify who were the creative geniuses who made the original contributions to the genre, who occasionally paid respectful homage, and who were the theiving copying hacks and otherwise morally bankrupt. We all must consider though, mustn’t we, how willing so many of us are to permit such people to get rich for a (long) time doing what they do, and as for ourselves, to work in a business that so often not only turns a blind eye to these transgressions, but also seems to encourage their repeated occurrence time and again. Your video sets a high bar of honest critique and analysis. I wish more people would discuss the visual art used to sell the glamor and entertainment world, and the business of photographic art as it depicts politics, power and even art itself the way you have here. Thank-you!
I’m so happy you are enjoying the videos! I’m really just making the videos that I wish others were making and hoping they find the right audience. This video in particular is actually ad restricted and suppressed by RUclips ( I think it’s the Nastassja Kinski “nudity”) but I still wanted to keep it up as is.
This channel has been my one of my greatest source of self education within my 2 years of photography. Thank you so much! Looking forward to continue in supporting your growth as much as your videos have done so with mine.
Thank you! I have another big documentary I’m working on at the moment and lots more to come. If there is a certain topic that interests you, feel free to let me know.
oh and how i love photographers, photographing while wearing sunglasses. Is that a bts or a campaign for the photographer? I'm just being cheeky but at the same time grossed out by Shield's ''work''. Love the channel!
I really appreciate the support. I've been working on a new video on Annie Leibovitz for a few weeks now, hopefully I will be able to finish it by August 🥰
Thank you Marco. Tyler's "work" never entered my fashion bubble, I'd never heard of him before I started research on this video, but after seeing it, I was completely fascinated by his financial success considering what he was doing.
Wow, I was quite impressed by Tyler Shields work as well as his self-consciousness when he's talking about his photographs and "his" style of work, just to learn that he's blatantly copying.
I didnt get that was a citation… well anyways… nice job on the video. I always thought Tyler shields sounded like he was full of himself in interviews. though I partly like his work. The woman running from the double winged plane kinda works better in colour imo.
I see a big difference in what the motivation is for young photographers. Rather than using photography as a tool for artistry and expression, it is a way to gain access to influential circles and gain an online following. It is not about the quality of the work, but how famous the subjects are.
@@THEMODELGENEExactly right. Anything to get ATTENTION. No art for art’s sake. Watching all of your work now. Geez, some of those rip offs were more blatant than I could have imagined!
@@THEMODELGENE You do a great job, so go for it! Who next? I’ve just got books on Louise Dahl-Wolfe and Parkinson. They probably have less content about them.
@@theboofin at the moment, I’m working on a a documentary of Peter Lindbergh and just finished Sally Mann’s book to do her later. I’ll also be doing videos breaking down the visual style of great photographers, like what makes an Avedon photo distinctly Avedon.

Love your channel. The Tyler Shields stuff is unreal. I will view his work quite differently now.
Thank you Mark, I'm working on another video as I write to you!
I've often thought that Tyler Shields images were copies or better ones, it's nice to see others see this as well.
You can get away with a lot when you brand yourself a celebrity photographer

I've never pressed pause so many times on a video in my life. What a tour de force. Well done.
Thank you, I really loved making this video

To be mentioned that Picasso got some inspirations from African wood masks cult and JM Basquiat from Arican art as well.
I love this channel so much.
Thank you!
Herb Ritts poached someone's lighting guy. Can't remember the whole story, but 90s LA was abuzz with this rumor

I really am looking forward to seeing this channel grow. You’ve no idea how many times I’ve gone back to this video (and a few others of yours too!)

@@THEMODELGENE yeeeesss I already got the notifications on 🙌🏾🙌🏾
@@THEMODELGENE even followed you on Insta too. Super stoked for what’s next!
So fascinating
I really like your videos, and this one was excellent. And loved the bit on Tyler Shields--always thought his work was derivative and lame.

Some people find their voice this way, he seems to be more comfortable in someone else’s voice.
What’s a bit ironic is the fact that the segment on Tyler shields is very similar to a vice article from 2016. inspiration or imitation? :)
Thanks for your comment! That Vice article is one of the many sources I used for research of this video and at 13:47 I reference it.

Someone needs lessons in creativity vs cheap knockoffs
Modern fashion photography just.... misses.

That Sally Mann copy is a complete joke.
Copy? He is completely unaware of the work from other photographers 😉
