      What bothers me so much now is that countries like France and Italy require the models to pay to see a doctor every 6 months to sign off that they are in good health to work as a model, but a look at any Saint Laurent or Celine runway clearly shows that piece of paper means nothing. I could go to the doctor today to get this signed, not eat for 5 months, but still be deemed healthy enough to work. Plus it is an additional expense for the models, not the clients, even though they are the ones requiring them.

Gemma's face was unworldly beautiful, she always seemed so down to earth in every one of her interview. I also remember 2008 when her body changed and the industry would not accept it. So many of those models disappeared. I remember Tanya Dziahileva, an incredible alien like 17 year old young woman that no one saw after the 2010s, only to make space to spoiled brats like Kendall Jenner. It seems like the industry is changing in a positive way, but I do miss models of the 2000s, and I wish the industry would have been more human towards them even though it is a cruel and competitive world. I wish Gemma, and all of these beautiful women all the best.

      Some people will always crave fame... I think it's rooted in deep insecurity. Such people can only value themselves if the world values them. But fame is fleeting, and the world never really cares about you for very long. And even when they do, it's only your image the world knows. It's very superficial and shallow. This is the deeply depressing, dehumanizing realization that celebrities go through. They will get stalked and used. I was approached to do fashion modeling but I am too active to sit still and I didn't value fashion. I can't imagine you would always meet the nicest of people in the industry either. I gained weight when pregnant and was shocked at the rude remarks even from family. They were used to me being thin and got rude. Wow!

  • @haticesaretemel9937

    It must have been brutal for her. Many models have been to similar places, but I think Gemma's story is striking because she rose very easily and fell from the highest very fast. Then again, she made millions during the process, and she lost a position she didn't do much to earn. The worst part is that the industry had been pushing the same standards to all women, body-shaming, dictating unrealistic beauty standards, and demonising other body types. Whilst being part of it, she benefited from and became a part of its perpetuation. I sympathise with her but I sympathise with fat-shamed teenage girls, or young women who envied her, much more. As a plus-size person myself, I was mocked and critised when I was no more than 8 and had to gain that maturity she got after everything when I was 15. But i sincerely believe she is a nice enough person to understand my point as well and it's the most important thing with her.

    • @THEMODELGENE
      @THEMODELGENE  Год назад +15

      I think the biggest difference in her situation was the tabloid attention: it wasn't just losing jobs, but being ridiculed on the cover of magazines, especially after the death of Heath Ledger. She spoke about struggling with disordered eating even before she started modeling so that period really must have felt like her whole world was falling down around her. I hope for progress in the fashion industry, but there are too many monsters in positions of power to see actionable change, and an army of sycophants who feel empowered by the same practices.

      @@THEMODELGENE been thinking about this aspect too, really. Losing her boyfriend must have been completely devastating even without the criticism and I think it tell more about other people's cruelty and entitlement than what she felt. Apart from sympathising with that kind of depression, I stand by my point though. Yes, there are toxic people who are abusing their position and she was privileged enough to benefit from it. Then it bit her back. I'm not saying it didn't hurt. I'm saying it bit others more.Same attention was on Adele, Melissa McCarthy, Ashley Graham as well and they had to live with it. Plus, mockery of overweight people was also on pretty much everyday's TV. Plus, she didn't actually got fat, she just lost her extra thin physique.

      @@THEMODELGENE similar to what happened to Tanya Dziahileva she also had a doll look but more if a fairy features. Wasn’t so well known in pop culture but absolutely dominated the fashion industry at 14 by 16 she was already established couture model opening the biggest shows. By 19 she vanished from the industry. I think her agency screwed her & maybe other stuff. She wanted to go to
      School and did but could have still modelled part timo then eventually come back. The industry did her wrong.

    Whereas I do agree about what the video was about, the way she was treated, when she was literally one of the biggest supermodels at the time (unbelievable) I also think she shouldn't have come back especially in such a critical year where models like Natasha, Snejana and other thin models were the trend. Crazy what happened to her and the same industry is hiring plus size models now.

    So happy to hear about this model Gemma;s triumphant return. So much for that nasty fashion blogger what was his name - the bryanboy? Anyway he was probably glad to see her gain weight because he was jealous of her and coverted what she had = Sort of like that character in the movie "Silence Of the Lamb" - There are creeps like him everywhere, you never know where, lurking around the corner waiting for you to get hurt - they love it.

      not to mention that it got him more views on his blog, more money, more attention. He is still sitting front row at many shows and making more money than someone like him every should
