Today, we are at the southernmost tip of India, about to begin an incredible journey across all the 51 Shaktipeetha temples in the country. This adventure will last three to four months, and I’m joined by my friends Joshi and Pramod. Shaktipeethas are sacred places filled with the powerful energy of Goddess Shakti. We are starting from here in Tamil Nadu, at the Kanyakumari Shaktipeetha.
In this series, we will explore the history, beliefs, and colorful traditions of each Shaktipeetha. these shrines mark the spots where parts of Goddess Sati fell to Earth, making them powerful centers of divine energy.
This temple is also known as kanyasramam or kalikasramam and also the current temple structure is more than 3000 years old.
devi here is worshipped as sarvani, meaning wife of god shiva.
In this Shakti Peetha, it is believed that Goddess Sati’s spine or backbone fell.
another amazing thing we can see here is the confluence of three sacred bodies of water: the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. it is belived this water has many medicinal properties and taking bath in this sangamam is beliveed to wash away all our sins.
according to the temple's stala puranam the temple's main vigraha was installed by god parashurama himself. one speciality of the vigraha is her diamond nose ring. its belived it came from a king cobra and it reflects the light so brightly. one an ancient sailor thought the light was from a lighthouse and it caused a major accident. because of this the eastern door of the temple opens only5 times a year.
also sunrise and sunsets are so magical here, there is a specific area aswell here to sit and see sunrise and sunset. this was recently made.
All Shaktipeetas have a Bhairava pratishta as well. Here, we can see a small temple dedicated to Nimisha Bhairava, a form of Lord Shiva. According to history, God Shiva sent various Bhairava incarnations to protect all the Shaktipeetas.
The history of this place is related to an Asura called banasura, he was always hurting devas and also he had a boon that only a kumari or virgin could kill him.
To save the world, Bhoomi Devi asked God Vishnu for help. God Vishnu told everyone to pray to Goddess Parashakti, the Supreme Mother. Goddess Parashakti appeared as a young girl and promised to kill Banasura at the right time. She traveled here, to Kanyakumari, and prayed to God Shiva. Over time, she grew into a teenage girl, which is why this place is called ‘Kanya Kumari’ ‘the virgin girl.’
Meanwhile, God Shiva from Suchindram fell in love with Kanya Kumari. Their marriage was planned,
it was supposed to happen at midnight on an auspicious day. On that day, God Shiva started his journey from Suchindram to Kanya Kumari’. When he reached Vazhukkamparai, about 5 km from Suchindram, Narada took the form of a rooster and crowed, pretending that it was already morning. Believing he had missed the right time for the marriage, Shiva returned to Suchindram.
Heartbroken, Kanya Kumari scattered her wedding food and cursed it to become stones.
Later, Banasura tried to force Kanya Kumari to marry him. She fought bravely and destroyed him with her divine weapon. In his final moments, Banasura asked for forgiveness and prayed that anyone who bathes in these waters be freed from their sins. Touched by his plea, Kanya Kumari blessed this place, and that is why people from around the world come here to bathe and seek the goddess’s blessings!”
After the sacred bath in Triveni Sangamam, we decided to visit the sacred footprints of Goddess Kumari, also known as Adi Parashakti,
To reach the small island, we had to take a boat. The crowd was huge because many people wanted to visit this amazing island. We stayed in the queue for almost two hours and finally got the tickets. The ticket price was 75 rupees per person for a round trip. Additionally, we had to buy another entry ticket to the island, which cost 30 rupees each.
First, we went to see the footsteps of our beloved goddess Adi Parashakti. It was a divine experience. According to history, Goddess Adi Parashakti performed deep meditation to Lord Shiva here. Later, we went to see the amazing statue of Swami Vivekananda.
During this time, Swami Vivekananda decided to go to America to attend the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago. His goal was to share India’s spiritual wisdom and bring back Western knowledge. Today, the rock is called Vivekananda Rock and has a temple honoring the great Swami who inspired people in both the East and the West.
