  • The 12-0, #1 Nebraska Cornhuskers (Big 8 champions and defending national champions) faced the 11-0, #2 Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC champions) in the 1972 Orange Bowl from Miami, FL. The 1971 national title was on the line. This was the third time in seven seasons that these two teams had faced off in a major bowl, with Alabama defeating Nebraska in both the 1966 Orange Bowl and the 1967 Sugar Bowl.

In my opinion, the 1971 Alabama team is the closest historical parallel to the 2018 team. Both teams blew out nearly every opponent on their schedule, setting new school records for offensive production along the way, only to be smacked around in the national championship game.

No problem. Hopefully the Tide and Huskers square it up again one day - so many great matchups in the 60s and 70s.

@@BamaRewind Yeah, if it's the next couple years, I'd ask for you to go easy! Frost is undoing basically 17+ years of Mike DuBose. But I'd love to get back to playing those big intersectional showdowns and eventually NY6 and playoff games and I do believe he's the guy to fix it. Or man, if Frost can get us pointed in the right direction, one of those Bama neutral site Atlanta/Dallas games with those two fan bases? Would be like a late August bowl game.

1971 Nebraska 'Blackshirt' defense arguably the best defense in CFB history. Only the record setting Oklahoma offense even dented them. Poor Bama didn't know what hit 'em.

This was an incredible time for college football. The period between 1964 and 1974 were the best 10 years in the sport in my opinion, with many great teams. Most of those seasons, there were multiple national champions, but 1971 was the most consensus season of its time since Army in WWII. The 1971 Nebraska team was the best since Army of 1945, and the 1971 Oklahoma team may have been 2nd to 4th best ever.
Alabama had blown Nebraska out twice before in the Orange Bowl, and a lot of Southern football experts expected the Tide to do it again. But, this team was nothing like the 1965 and 1966 Cornhusker teams. They beat #2, #3, and #4 teams by a combined 104 to 44.
