- How To Do A Throttle Body Sync TBS 2017 FZ09 MT09 FJ09 MT09 Tracer XSR - This is a very simply procedure that is normal scheduled maintenance every several thousand miles. Most owners skip it, thinking it simply doesn't need to be done. What they don't know is how it can calm down high frequency vibrations, making for a much more pleasant ride. There's no reason to take it to a dealer, you just need one special tool and you can use it on any bike: amzn.to/2urndTQ

Love your videos for 3 years now...Dealer wanted $1000.00 for oil, air, plugs, sync and fuel injector clean...did it myself for $100 ...saved me $$$ in doing my own and was doen right...Thanks man.
Thanks for this no BS instructional video. Very informative, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. I was about to take it to a dealer today.
Love the video and you only confirmed my suspension…this is my first fuel injected bike and I stupidly thought it wasn’t necessary because of the electronics …I noticed a high rev vibration after doing my valve lash… I’ve felt this in all my older carbureted machines when they got outta wack …after searching for hours for my sync gauge I got her tuned and holy crap what a difference!
I bought the Morgan Carbtune and did the sync last week after watching your video. A very good explanation that made this job so easy. Thank you.
Finding the third vacuum plug was an adventure, but once located the job was very simple, compared to my '82 650 Seca.. Great video.Keep them coming....
Consider this...if you use a master cylinder to calibrate off of, then you could still use this tool on more than 4 cylinder engines. Calibrate your first 4 cylinders, then, while staying connected to your master cylinder, calibrate the other two or however many.
Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with us. I ride a 2016 FZ09 and reached out to a local shop to do my 20K service. The man told me it would be $750. + parts. I damn near choked on my own spit! I told him I couldn’t afford that for a simple service. They’re free to charge what they wish I however can choose not to go there.
Thanks for the clear and insightful videos. You seem to answer all the questions I have as you go, and you have saved me a lot of money and heartache
Thanks for watching!
Wow. Your narration is so good. I've dropped many creators because they haven't gotten their chops ready for narration. And I am feeling great about finding your channel. I probably would have made it here soon, since you are mentioned quite a bit in the users forum.
Awesome! Thanks!
‘Old’ video, but I bought a 2014 mt09 and want to get it all back up to par, this seems like a very doable job. The hourly rate for a garage in The Netherlands is insane and I’ve been only twice to a garage, both times sucked. Doing my own maintenance and it’s so rewarding, also in understanding the bike. Thanks again!
You got a sub from me, you have a solid way of explaining the reasons why. Cheers
You are a scholar and a saint
Can't wait to get back into it. TWO is getting me pumped.
My fz09 feels like new. It's crazy how much difference a tiny adjustment can make. !!! I love it
Thank you for this. I followed the procedure but made the mistake of not allowing the bike to warm up properly before starting the adjustments. I managed to balance the cylinders, but now the bike is idling at 1600 RPM, and after riding for an hour, my throttle hand became numb. Going to try it again.
way to go dude you have a new subscriber like your attention to detail and just talk about what important
Once again, you have another excellent video, teaching me the skills I need to maintain my bike. Thanks, you’re the best.
VERY well explained mate, thank you!
I just bought an xsr 900. I've been irritated by the vibrations in in throttle lever and right foot peg at higher revs. I had no idea it might be something tunable. It's getting that break in service done next week and I'll make sure this step is included in that.
Later one I'll get the tool myself.
Thanks bub.
Update: this isn't a fixable thing according to the mechanic. It's a computertuning thing and pretty much requires an after market exhaust. I'm doubting his competence based off of info from a RUclips video. I've become one of those..
I have done this before in the dealership, but next time I'm going to do it by myself, thanks man
From the vids, I thought the bike was a bright red. I saw a red, 2017 FZ-09 at a dealership yesterday. The red is a deep, dark red. The color is amazing.
Cool that you're doing vids showing the common mods made on FZ-09s.
+GigOne it very much depends on the lighting :)
The clamps being difficult to remove is most likely not due to “over-tightening”. Clamps with dissimilar bolt and clamp materials are subject to excessive friction when torquing. It is known as “galling” and causes a welding effect. With every penny accounted for in production costs it is, by design, an effective way to maintain clamping force where the joint is subject to vibrations.
Hi. Great tutorial. I can't see a way to that left hand vacuum connection though... even if I could get the cap off, I'm not sure how I'd get the gauge tubing on. 2018 bike, but surely they can't be too different.
Long needle nose pliers. Easy.
Seriously I have long and angled needle nose pliers and not only is it near impossible to see but everything is in the way. Did you disconnect other lines out of the way first?
Great video. I bought the carbtune it works great, I think even better than the gauge ones as it is well dampened.
Great instructions! I purchased the Carbtune Pro tool based on your recommendation. I plan to check the sync during my 600 mile service on a 2020 FJR1300 over the next day or two. I also watched your other video specifically covering the FJR sync process.
I took delivery of a new 2019 Tracer 900 GT, two weeks ago. I just put over 1000 kms (600 miles) on it. I did a 400 km ride yesterday, and I had crazy amounts of vibrations in the handlebars, my hands are still a bit numb today. I hope getting my throttle bodies synced will help correct this. It is sucking the joy out of riding my new bike.
It will!
Thank you Sir! Now I'm confident to do this on my 2016 FZ 07. I hope the procedures will somewhat be similar to yours. I will need to buy the tools first. Thank you again for these tutorials videos and ride safe!
All the triples are identical, yep :)
Except the FZ-07 is a twin.
Dude that's a superb vid. I just bought a used Tracer 900 showing 9k miles and it is a little vibey. I love a special tool and I live in the UK so I will be heading to Morgan Carbtune's site for a purchase. I'm subbed!
Nice. You did this on my bike. Same color even. Can’t ask for better than that.
sooo uh, what if you already adjusted the white painted screw... and dont know where it originally was positioned...?
Thank you very much for this instructive video. I also bought the Carbtune Pro and try to do the sync on my Yamaha Tracer 9 - same CP3 engine, but no matter how much I try to adjust the screws, it does not seem to work for me as I'm not able to level up all 3 columns of Hg. The one from the master cylinder (painted one from the factory, which I haven't touched) is just 2 increments up from the others 2, no matter how much I tried to adjust (no more screw rotation left). Do you have any idea why? Any input from you would be much appreciated.
I bought the Carb Tune on Amazon tool after seeing your video doing the same thing to your FJR. It's pretty easy on the fj-09 but I've only had to make very small adjustments.
Thank you for the great explanation, really sold me on doing this now
Great video used this to do my fz09. All vibration in handle bars and feet pegs is gone. I have the same color fz as you do you know where i could get touch up paint? Can't find the color in touch up anywhere
Go to www.colorrite.com they are the best in getting right
great video I have a problem with my fz 07 and vibration. I'm going to try this thanks dude
Good video just finished syncing throttle bodies on 19 mt09. I was able to get them all in sync but I noticed the adjustment screws for both throttle bodies are fully turned to the right. What happens next time I need to sync throttle bodies ?
If they still need to go that way you can back out the master up to a turn without a problem.
Hi, great video. I’m planning to do mine, bike is at 26k kms. So you adjust the settings at idle or certain rpm level!!
great advice. my bars vibrate like crazy and the numbness is normal for me now haha
+MorriSiege sync um up ;)
Hey Bryan. The manual notes to re-install the air box after connecting the sync tool before checking the sync, then adjusting if needed. I realize it would be pretty much impossible to get to the adjusting screws with the box on, but have you tried checking the sync with the air box installed compared to removed to see if there is a difference in readings?
I have on others and it made no difference to leveling them. It would to an absolute number, which is not needed at all.
thank you for this video. very clear instructions and applicable to any bike like you said
good job on the video, i did this for the first time ever on my VFR800 i had last year.. made a huge difference in the vibrations like you said.. i looked in the Vrods manual says nothing about adjust-ability on them.. id have to look it over to see if it has adjustable screws to do it to this bike.
+William Huston, Realtor same procedure but the crowd requires you to install fittings to the engine they don't give you the nipples.
+TwoWheelObsession vrod not crowd lol autocorrect
will it cause any permanent damage if we don't do the sync ?
no
Good vid. I have a 2015 FJ09. 1,900 miles. Just bought it n put one tank of no lead in it. I’ve burned a half tank n this morning noticed a slight misfire all thru the rpm range. I rev it n notice a slight backfire. It pull fine no flat spots. You indicated the vibration issue. My bike does vibrate. Just started it. I’m looking online for this misfire problem but have not found anything. Could I need a sync? Would out of sync cause a slight misfire? It’s so new I’m not thinking about a parts issue. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thx Chuck.
The backfire is when I close the throttle. Like a lean issue. You can barely hear it.
Hello. anyone know what happens (the signs) or how to check if you have the master bolt tampered with?
I tried a throttle body sync on my 2021 MT-09. The master cylinder remained higher than the other two. What do you do in that situation?
Thanks in advance.
I had the same issue. I just got my other two a close as possible. I wrote to Yamaha USA about the matter and haven't heard back. My bike is running great so I'm just going to let it go. My next maintenance is coming up soon and I'll see if that hasn't changed. If it's the same, I guess I'll just live with it.
Ride well.
If your ecu is flashed will it effect the rev range the primary cylinder is set too stock or do ecu flashes not have an effect on where the idle is supposed to be?
Should I reattach the air box when doing this? Also, what causes it to go out of calibration in the first place?
I just picked up an XSR 900 and everything you described about vibration is what i'm currently experiencing. It would appear I need to do a throttle body sync. Can you point me to which video you went into more detail on disassembly. This will be my first time into the "guts" of any motorcycle so I'm a bit nervous. Great video, and I'm actually looking forward to doing the work myself. any additional advice, tools to use, etc. is greatly appreciated.
+Kevin Ankin the one called how to remove your tank air filter etc
great video, I am glad I found your channel, I just got and xsr900 and has about 250 miles, so I would have to do this soon, The only part I am confuse is the part with the master cylinder, is it the one with the white where you adjust it or you never touch that one. thanks in advance for the reply.
You never touch that one. You adjust the other two.
very helpful video!! where i can found these tool to sync
I don't have a garage. Can I sync the throttle bodies of my MT-09 outside? Enjoyed your video.
awesome as usual... lol I really wish you would do a video on a oem fender eliminator. I bought the Oem for my '17 fz09 and am intimidated by the poor instructions.
Wer to buy the tools sir
hello i want ask few questions
km of bike ?
which exhaust system on it ?
also the device that you suggest is it trustable because the problem is for me device most of them dont show correct values
thank you for the videos by the way realy helps me all the time about mt09/fz09
Great work man. Thanks
Where did you get your tool?
Thanks for the great info and upload. My FJ09 is doing exactly this problem. It just started this spring . Before it used to be dead smooth. I have a question though. How often do I have to re-sync the throttle bodies ? Thanks in advance.
Yamaha recommends every 4,000 miles
how many miles on the engine before you can start to feel the syncro?
Very nice good job thanks for sharing
Hi Brian, Just an update as to the price increase since 2017..... $140 today on Amazon. How would you feel about a ECU Flash from 2 Wheel DynoWorks for $250?
Both prices ref. 1/31/22.
I have FJR 1300 with 35k miles i have never done it never will don't have any issues untill now no vibrations ok if you do it your self but if you have to pay a dealer not worth it
How many miles before you need it done?
Did you end up using the 6mm adapters?
thanks for putting out these awesome videos!
hello sir, 1 month ago I cleaned the carburetor of my motorcycle, I used a carburetor cleaner spray, now my motorcycle is running at high RPM. :(
How often should you tune your throttle body for the mt09, and where can i find the periodical maintenance table for this? I have looked over owners manual and i could not find it or i might have over looked it.
It's right in the chart in the owners manual with everything else
Thanks for the video. I have a XSR I experienced that numbness in the right hand. I'm ordering the Morgan Carbtune soon. I just wanna ask, the painted master screw should not be touch and only the 2 unpainted (brass) screws can be adjusted, did I understand it correctly?
Correct
you are king
What is this mod for?
Carbtune actually made in Ireland?
@TwoWheelObsession
Great video, thanks for sharing knowledge. I have 2 questions.
When tightening/loosening those screws you are decreasing/increasing air or fuel?
When you say that the Carbtune Pro tool can be used on any bike you are referring to any fuel injection bike or even carburated bikes aswell?
The name Carbtune is by itself sugestive but it's just to be sure ☺️
Any bike. You are adding air
Hey there, so I did the throttle body sync in my fz09 and right after that, a rattling noise when the clutch is not pressed started. It stops when I press the clutch. What do you think that can be? Literally started as soon as I had the bike all put back together and went for a ride. The throttle itself is much better and smooth.
Replace the dampeners on the clutch basket. Had nothing to do with throttle body sync
help! i just baught a new tracer 900 gt, the handlebar vibrates at certain rpm, mostly on the freeway, its a vine vibration but enough to make my mostly left hand kinda vibrate still even off the bike. could it be a sync issue?
Yes. The first one is to be done at 600 miles. It’s in your manual.
Do you need to set the idle higher before tuning the throttle bodies?
No and it’s not possible to alter it anyway
Quick question: did you sync the throttle bodies to idle or at a certain rpm? Because my idle was hopping all over even after being thoroughly warmed up. So instead, I synced the throttle bodies to be even at 4500 rpm (highway revs).
Is this a dumb idea? Should I go back and re-sync them to idle as much as possible?
It’s always done at idle. If you mean the bars we’re moving that means you didn’t have the restrictions in
I got this code p0638 (throtle actuator control range/ bank 1 ).please help
Where is actuator located and how to fix?
Im new and English is my second language.a bit hard to understand all
It a bit hard to start the bike but i donot fell anything wrong while driving.
Just have full akra exhaust + kn filter.is that the problem......
HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPPP
Thanks for your content and the time to put it out there. I recently purchased an xsr900. When I just twist the throttle a little bit ( revs 3000 and under) the bike starts chugging or lurching I’m not sure how to explain it. It’s like it’s not getting the fuel until I open the throttle a bit more.
happens in every gear at whatever speed like the bike wants to stall. I need to feather the clutch around turns. Would this sync be the first thing to try? Idles fine and other than this area of the throttle position all seems to work fine.
Did you ever get your issue addressed?
I’m sorry I got confused you said you reconnected the ECU before turning on the bike ?
Yes. The fuel lines and ECU must be connected to run for the tune.
Great clear vid thanks!
cool! I think I'm going to get that tool
Excuse me sir,Does it need to do ISC initial after doing SYNC?
No
I decided to do the trottle sync this morning, the bike got to normal temp and everything but for me the white painted screw was the middle one and to sync all the tree I needed to tight the 2 screw all the way in to catch the middle one and I cannot ajust more then that, the bike sound better but im worry because the only ones I can touch or ajust are already topped up now ! What should I do?
Nothing, you are fine
My middle screw was run all the way in from factory. Kind of a piss off because I couldn’t adjust it to where it should be to match the master.
Hey, thanks for the knowledge you share. I am buying a MT 09 this Monday and this is a lot of information i need in one.
I have a question: How did you supply fuel for the adjustment when the fuel lines were disconnected?
They are not disconnected
Was it connected with the lines from the tool?
You misunderstood the video. They fuel was never disconnected. The electrical connections were reconnected after removing the heat shield.
I do have the carbtune aince a long time but im not use to this bike, you said not to touch the master bolt so that mean you are just playing with the 2 brace ones ?
Yep
TwoWheelObsession thanks, my dealer wont touch it he want to make multiple appointments to do it in between the yamaha manual , 500kms,1500,3000...etc a money pit of a service dealer if you ask me .. the manual said the first should be 1000kms 2nd 7000kms etc... Not the same !
I have to ask. Does your engine tick (like valves at top) at about 3000 rpm?
Curious if it's something that may be remedied by doing this..
Either way, your video convinced me to buy this tool. Thanks!
No and no
Oh well. My bike has just over 1300mi on it and has some stutter in the idle, so I'm still going to sync it. Going to open it up in the spring and check valve clearance.
Neither of those cause any kind of stutter. Check fuel and ignition.
I apologize, stutter may not have been the correct word. The idle just isn't smooth as I think it should be.
As far as my valve noise, the shop told me it's normal Yamaha engine noise, but I'm still going to check.
so you only sync to the idle? I was under the impression you start with the idle and you finish on average highway RPM. I'm probably wrong but just want to clarify.
Idle only
Does it make any difference to do in std or A mode?
So the goal is to get the three levels even when the revs come back to idle? Is this the only read we are looking at on the tool?
You only judge them at idle, period - and yes. Balance the rest to the master.
@@TwoWheelObsession thank you
@TwoWheelObsession sorry, do you know how set ISC minimum RPM after a parameter 67 reset?
thanks .
No I don't, sorry
Thanks man!
Seriously? This is the one that causing my right handle bar vibration till hand numb? I have changed the front tyre, rebalance and align, changed brake pump from steel container to plastic, increase bar end weight and etc and yet the vibration is reduced but not significant. At some point even thinking to sell my bike due to the frustration of the hand numb issue. I need to try this out if it really works
Yep
Hi, it balancing reduces amount of vibration?
Thank you.
It seems the master throttle body was at 22 CM before adjusting the others and came up a little past 23 cm after adjusting. As long as the others match the master throttle body all is good ?
Where it's at makes no difference, you are only looking at them relative to each other.
@@TwoWheelObsession thanks for the reply . This will help me out alot
...a-a-a-a-a-and Subscribed
why is it important to Throttle Body sync?
But why did you need to know which one was the master.
My master tb is #3. Im able to symc my #1 and #2, but cant get them both to sync with my master which is a lot higher level on the carbtune?
What do you mean 'can't get them to sync'?
I have the same issue. What did you end up doing?
Very nice videos. New subscriber!
Hi Brian, I'm now coming up on 600 miles on my '17 and noticing a slight surging sensation at low RPM. Could that also be due to out of sync? I bought the tool and about to do the syncing but wanted to see what you thought. Thanks!
I have not heard of it ever causing that.
hi just wondering if you ever found out what your low rpm surging was? i have a mt 09 with about 3000 km on it and im getting the same thing
Roger Bourcier I synced the TBs and it finally went away so not sure if it was from that or I just put more miles on it.
What is the brand and model of the manometer that you are using. I have the same bike FZ 09 and your videos are so helpful.
+heykat18 gee if only it was right in the description...
Your jealousy is shining through Dan, with all your off the wall snarky comments LOL
Guilty of "if it's in plane sight you won't see it"
