Funny thing about this performance (and the gut of it, perhaps). Groupies were like the bunnies at the mansion. And the truth about the sexual revolution and how women still had the stigma on the receiving end of it, is contained in the bite of the piece. I think it was really gutsy for Tony to play this particular song, I think he knew what he was doing and I think it was really cool to play the truth, rather than use the exposure for self serving purpose. I love this guys stuff and man I respect this BIG TIME.
cool reply. i like it. you. might like this... tony joe is my stepdads uncle on his mothers side. I'm 33 now and i can remember when i was a kid (20 some years ago) he would call the house and i will never forget the sound of his voice. you knew you were talking to someone special. a genuine man, classy as hell and you are right...ballsy.
Thanks for the response Levi- and he is a genuine talent. I also really liked when he played on Johnny Cash's show and they did the duet. Both guys are class in the genuine sense of real soul.
The truth of the matter is that, whether there was a stigma or not (and whether the stigma was unfairly applied to women disporportionately or exclusively) women ARE ruined and become "old before their time" when they are passed around "like a joint"-- a turn of phrase that the witless prop-partiers saw as their cue to titter and giggle like hipsters-in-the-know, as if the song were a celebration of more kinky fun for the "liberated." You are right: Tony knew what he was doing, and was telling the truth in a milieu where falsehood was being sold and making people like Hefner rich.
The brilliant and brave Tony Joe White giving his best advice to hose pretty girls, I bet his words of wisdom did hit more with some people. Tony Joe was rutted directly to ground, he came from the swaps and the real world
Seriously fine performer and an excellent live performance... I was working in my first job at that time and ordered a copy (on 45rpm vinyl) that took ages to arrive.
As a matter of interest they were quite friendly and Elvis recorded 3 of his songs.Elvis took TJ and his wife to Las Vegas to watch his first performance of the TJ song “Polk Salad Annie”.Rumour was that Elvis was going to record another TJ song “Rainy Night in Georgia” just before he died.
Best joke of all on P-boy After Dark was Peter Green singing 'Rattlesnake Shake' in front of all the Swingers ( = song about a guy who 'can't get no chicks.."
when this was recorded a groupie wasn't thought much of but now it's a career choice just saying BTW love the song but one of the guys listening to it is Hue Heffner. nothing more to add
Μεγάλε αλιγάτορα Τόνι πήγες εκεί στα κορίτσια να πεις τί τες περιμένει και τί πραγματικά συμβαίνει. Έπιασε καμμία άραγε το νόημα; Did any girl there pick your thoughts?
I'm betting that a certain singer-songwriter has a crazy sex story he could tell that begins with the party at Hef's place after this episode was taped.
One of those songs that never bore you.
The late, great Tony Joe White, love him and his music!! :)
Great song
The funky story teller man awesome Tony j white

@Joseph Preston Did you miss your prescription?
I think that Hugh Hefner knew what Tony was doing, too. It was cool to make fun of yourself and those around you.... cause YOU WERE SO COOL.
Love him, so sad he's no longer with us

Love the guy with the pipe
Barbie Benton!
suppose that defines a portion of "Americana". TJW leaving spaces between his words and playing turns up his low key volume.

Wish i could play like that,but i cant☹
Класс!

Yah Elvis looking great man!!!!
And another thing.
How the bloody hell did Tony Joe concentrate on the song with that girl in the silver dress looking at him like that?
Steve Gillers His eyes are closed a lot of the time.
He also wasn't a simp. Clearly.
Irony alert..those slappers havent got a clue
